Immune deficiency - Immunodeficiency diseases

Dear Olle: I am in touch with a professional man who lives on the East Coast. He has the "identical rare immune deficiency" as my two grandsons. He is being treated by a Pediatric Immunologist at Yale. Here in Minnesota, the boys' Immunologist also treats adults.

Quite an "irony" that a rare deficiency that is defined by the fact that it indicates "ageing," requires adults to receive treatment from a Pediatric Immunologist!!!! The affected person lives about 75 feet from a 200 kv high voltage powerline. He has not specifically requested confidentiality but right now, it is best his identity remain anonymous.

I have mailed several items to him including information regarding filters. He located me via an Omega post -- further evidence that Klaus's continuing efforts are paying off!!! Take care - Joanne

Dear Anonymous:

I will type below an excerpt from the first paragraph titled "Immunodeficiency" of Chapter 18 (page 18.1) from the book "IMMUNOLOGY - Third Edition (1993)," by Ivan Roitt, Jonathan Brostoff and David Male:

"Immunodeficiency disease results from the absence, or failure of normal function, of one or more elements of the immune system. Specific immunodeficiency diseases involve abnormalities of T or B cellsd, the cells of the adaptive immune system. Non-specific immunodeficiency disease involve abnormalities of elements such as complement or phagocytes, which act non-specifically in immunity. Primary immune deficiencies are due to intrinsic defects in cells of the immune system and are for the most part genetically determined. Secondary immunodeficiency diseases result from extrinsic factors, such as drugs, irradiation, malnutrition or infection. Thus AIDS is a secondary immunodeficiency resulting from a virus infection.

Immunodeficiency diseases cause increased susceptibility to infection in patients. The infections encountered in immunodeficient patients fall, broadly speaking into two categories. Patients with defects in immunoglobulins or complement proteins or phagocytes are very susceptible to recurrent infections..........

* * *

IT IS VERY OBVIOUS TO ME THAT THE IMMUNOLOGIST OUTRIGHTLY LIED BY THE FACT HE FAILED TO INFORM US THAT GRANDSONS' IMMUNE DEFICIENCIES WERE NOT "PRIMARY" AND ADDITIONALLY BY THE FACT THAT THE BOYS' BLOOD WAS SENT TO A KNOWN EMF RESEARCHER, DR. FATIH UCKUN (UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA. "ENVIRONMENTAL POSSIBILITIES" WERE NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN AFTER I BROUGHT UP SUBJECT OF CONCERNS RE HIGH VOLTAGE POWERLINES!!!

I NEED TO CHECK FOR ANY BOOKS BY THESE AUTHORS AFTER 1993. WILL NOT BE SURPRISED IF UPDATE RE EMF RAPID FINDINGS IS NOT AVAILABLE AND/OR "IN WORKS........" TAKE CARE - JOANNE

Overhead power line route back in play

TRAHVOL spokesperson Maureen Broadfoot addresses the media at a press conference in Vancouver last December. The group is not surprised that the B.C. Transmission Corpoation is once again looking at replacing the existing powerlines through Tsawwassen with overhead lines.

Deal or “old” deal. That’s what the B.C. Transmission Corporation is saying in its final submission to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) on the issue of routing upgraded power lines through parts of residential Tsawwassen. According to information from BCTC, if it is not successful in trading its existing overhead power line rights with local home owners—who have the cables running through their properties along a 50-year-old right-of-way—for rights to put the lines underground, the utilities commission should order construction of a new overhead set of lines. The existing lines—which carry electricity to Vancouver Island customers via an undersea cable from Tsawwassen Beach—are nearing the end of their useful life. And to meet the replacement set’s in-service date of October 2008, BCTC is calling for a possible return to an overhead option. BCTC stated that it be granted 90 days to reach an agreement with landowners to exchange rights. “If, following 90 days, BCTC is unsuccessful in obtaining an exchange of rights with a majority of landowners, BCTC believes that the additional cost and risks associated with underground construction cannot be justified and the Commission should order overhead construction on the existing right-of-way.” Many residents believed the overhead route was off the table when BCTC announced two months prior to the last provincial election in May 2005 that overhead lines were no longer part of its plan. One person not surprised with the apparent switch-back is Cecil Dunn, a founding member and chair of protest group TRAHVOL (Tsawwassen Residents Against Higher Voltage Overhead Lines). “They (BCTC) never really took that option off the table,” he said, adding residents have made it clear they would strongly oppose any moves by BCTC to acquire underground rights. Some have even vowed to commit acts of civil disobedience if the BCUC chooses the existing right-of-way route. They prefer a route away from residential land. “But it looks like we may be back to the 100-foot towers (double the height of the existing ones) they had proposed from the start,” Dunn said. “They are trying to blackmail residents by providing us with two bad choices to choose from, rather than pursuing a route outside of Tsawwassen.” At the centre of residents’ fears is that the lines emit powerful electro magnetic fields (EMF) that some critics say are linked to health risks such as some forms of cancer. Plus, moving the lines from overhead to underground would cause major disruption to the landscaped backyards of affected residents. “This is yet another example of an arrogant Crown corporation trying to ride roughshod over the public,” Dunn said. Just when a decision will be made on where the lines will go is still unknown as one of the longest public hearings in recent memory on a public utility enters its closing stage. “Right now the commissioners are sorting through about 40 volumes of transcripts from the public hearings,” BCUC secretary Robert Pellatt said, adding that amounts to roughly 6,000 pages of testimony from the hearings that spanned Feb. 6 to March 23. Closing arguments in the case are now being submitted. And according to the BCUC web site ( http://www.bcuc.com ) the last phase of that process is scheduled to be concluded by the end of May. However, BCTC has posted an expected decision date on its web site ( http://www.bctc.com ) for July.

BCTC believes project will be on schedule

Despite expected fierce opposition from Tsawwassen residents, B.C. Transmission Corporation (BCTC) officials believe its proposed high voltage line replacement project will remain on schedule. That was part of the opening testimony at the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) public hearings this week in downtown Vancouver. On Monday, lawyer Richard Gathercole, who was representing the BC Old Age Pensioners' Organization, was the first to cross examine a panel of BCTC officials. He questioned whether the project to replace the aging lines could be completed in time to meet its 2008 deadline, at which time the cables are expected to have come to the end of their reliable life. Bruce Barrett, BCTC's Director of Major Projects replied that the project could be pushed back as many as two years past the 2008 deadline. But the reliability of the system, which supplies power to Vancouver Island residents via an undersea cable from Tsawwassen Beach, would steadily decrease. BCTC has proposed to replace the lines, which run along a 50-year-old right-of-way that cuts through a number of residential areas in Tsawwassen, with more powerful ones. About 150 homes have the lines running through their properties, with many buildings constructed close to the lines. Residents, who have formed the opposition group TRAHVOL (Tsawwassen Residents Against Higher Voltage Overhead Lines,) fear the electro magnetic fields (EMF) the lines give off are a health hazard and should not be routed past homes. They favour an alternate route that sends the lines away from residential areas. Testimony at the hearings, which is expected to last several weeks, will be reviewed by BCUC's commissioners who are tasked with choosing a route for the project. A decision is anticipated once the hearings have concluded sometime next month Another route proposal by Vancouver-based Sea Breeze Pacific Regional Transmission System, Inc. that bypasses Tsawwassen completely by putting the lines underground from North Surrey to White Rock, is also part of the hearings. Among BCTC's route options is placing the cables underground along the existing Tsawwassen right-of-way by trading the current overhead line access for underground access. Residents remain steadfastly against that option and remain unified in their unwillingness to grant BCTC that right. "We would not be able to build there without rights of way granted by a legal proceeding," said BCTC's Barrett under cross examination. "I would point out that it's very common on linear project corridors like this for property owners to strongly resist and indicate that they will oppose to the bitter end. It's very common." While that could provide a delay in the project, Barrett said parts of the project leading up to the contentious residential area could be constructed if homeowners challenge the issue of compensation. However, if the residents' challenge is on the matter of land expropriation to install the lines underground, the matter could take longer in the courts. And he could not prejudge what BCTC would do. Upcoming testimony in the hearings will address the residents' health concerns with noted EMF critic Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource Studies at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario appearing on behalf of TRAHVOL. Official says 'it's very common' for residents to oppose power projects to bitter end.
