Make Your Voice Heard to Protect Elephants

There are over 600 captive elephants in the U.S., most of which are suffering due to inadequate space, unnatural conditions, lack of exercise and social deprivation. They are often forced to stand in the same place for hours upon hours, chained by the leg. Exhibited elephants are usually kept “in check” and trained with the use of a bullhook, or ankus, a device with a long handle and a sharp metal hook used for discipline.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking public comments on space and living conditions for captive elephants in the U.S. in order to consider the enforcement of the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) at zoos and circuses. Please help us improve the plight of these magnificent animals by filling out the petition form below with your comments in support of dramatically improving the standards for captive elephants.

Greece: 1,500 ANIMALS BURNED ALIVE

Greece: 1,500 ANIMALS BURNED ALIVE - PET "WARE HOUSE"
Wednesday, 3:59 PM

From CriticalPetsRescue

URGENT! - KINDLY CROSS POST to the MOON and BACK!

Dear Friends: I have not cajoled and urged you to support any of my actions in Greece in a very, very long time. You all have enough on your plates. I saw the TV coverage of this horror on Greek TV just moments ago. I felt I got a glimpse of hell, and I am shaking with sorrow and rage. Please do not let the animals in this God forsaken country down.

I am now begging you to copy and paste this letter - copy and past the addresses in the e-mail block, and blast the press and officials in Greece and copy me: twinkieperkyebby@msn.com (@msn.com).

It will take you less than two minutes. Please offer that up for the Animals of Greece.

Love,

Marijo

Dear Sir/Madame:

The tarnished image of Greece around the world and its practice of brutality towards its companion and farmed animals is one which should conjure up shame in the hearts of every compassionate Greek.

The suspicious, illegal pet ware house fire of October 24th that burned alive over 1500 animals (companion animals, monkeys and all types of exotics) in Vari, near Athens is clearly an indication of the apathy, absolute stupidity and the aberrant direction of state veterinarian Chryssa Dile of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry's inability and lack of desire to function on behalf of the animals under its jurisdiction. To compound the criminally negligent activities or lack of activities of the Ministry of Agriculture, government officials condone and support the rantings and destructive actions of a small group pf people led by Popi Baka and Ioanna Garagouni who are hell bent on destroying any semblance of animal welfare in Greece.

We plead with the press to address animal related issues with unbiased, intelligent reportage and a modicum of compassion. Carry the torch for these innocent victims who are unable to speak or control their destinies. This disheartening incident is yet more proof that the animals in Greece exist in a virtual hell. All of the above should be recorded for history as just another of Greece's failings.

Sincerely

Greek Press and Officials

Say NO to cruel fashion

A message from Pilvi

Friends! I signed, would you sign it too?

Thank you!

Original Message

Dear friends, winter is coming please remember

"NO FUR" they need it more then we do*
https://community.hsus.org/campaign/furfreepledge

Say NO to cruel fashion! Take the Fur Free Pledge and take a stand against the fur industry.

Wearing fur or fur trim is cruel and unnecessary. Whether caught in steel traps in the wild or anally electrocuted after life in a cage on a fur farm, these animals suffer immensely. When compassionate consumers like you take a stand against the fur industry by refusing to purchase its products, designers will stop using fur, retailers will stop selling it, and fashion writers will stop reporting on it as an acceptable trend. You have that power with every purchase you make.

Thank you to designers Stella McCartney, Marc Bouwer, Jay McCarroll and the Ralph Lauren, H&M, Zara and J.Crew companies for pledging not to use real animal fur in their collections! Let's encourage others to follow their humane example!

Please forward to all of your friends!

Don't Poison the American Prairie

The prairie dog is an important character on the American Plains. Burrowing owls, rabbits, snakes and other ground-dwelling creatures all make their homes in prairie dogs’ elaborate underground communities. And prairie dogs are a staple for endangered black-footed ferrets and other Great Plains predators.

Now, the Forest Service wants to poison and kill tens of thousands of these furry critters.

Take action now -- urge the Forest Service to stop the prairie dog massacre.
http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=F3DP2D1x2qrBnnwMvP2OZg..

Tens of thousands of prairie dogs could be poisoned and killed -- but it’s not only these tunneling critters that stand to suffer.

Because so many other creatures depend on prairie dogs for survival -- from burrowing owls to badgers, swift foxes to snakes -- the entire grassland ecosystem is at risk.

Help stop a harmful Forest Service plan to poison and kill tens of thousands of prairie dogs -- and harm the balance of life on the American Plains.
http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=F3DP2D1x2qrBnnwMvP2OZg..

Last year alone after a similar rule change, nearly 70,000 prairie dogs were killed on National Grasslands bordering private land.

Now, the Forest Service is proposing to make it easier to poison and kill prairie dogs on three more public grasslands including the Buffalo Gap National Grassland -- key habitat for the recently reintroduced swift fox and the most important recovery area for the endangered black-footed ferret.

Don’t let this dangerous proposal see the light of day -- write the Forest Service now!
http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=F3DP2D1x2qrBnnwMvP2OZg..

As always, thank you for all you do to protect our wildlife and wild places.

Sincerely,

Rodger Schlickeisen,
President Defenders of Wildlife

Hi there,

You have received a message from colleen: Original Message:

LETS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS --- GO WARRIORS 9:48 AM MASS. SHELTER ORDERED TO KILL ALL DOGS OVER TAXES WASTED ON DOG FOOD! Thursday, 7:03 PM Ok folks, you don't have to be in rescue to help on this one. You don't even have to be a dog lover ...... just someone with a wee bit of compassion to a living creature.

One woman complains that keeping the dogs too long means dog food which is a "waste of taxpayers money"!! One person, not half the damn town. Who is this person, and what kind of pull do they have that can get these lives ended on just a complaint?

Please, take a few moments to call. I am unsure if they have an answering machine or not, but it's worth a try tonight. If not, start first thing in the morning. Ashburnham, MA Town Hall 978-827-4104

If you are outside the US., or do not have free long distance, please, take a moment to post this to not only your entire address book, but also all your friends on myspace, Yahoo groups, as well as other groups that I don't even know of. Remember, this is in MA which means EST, 3 hours ahead of the west coast. This is the most moronic reason to take the lives of precious animals that I have ever heard of and I cannot believe the town manager would condone this.

Speak up for those who have no voice!

Kathie Sullivan-Parkes

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!

You don't have to live in Ashburnham, MA to complain about this - only a dog lover! Please STOP this ridiculous order! Permission to spread this far and wide!

Experts call for North Sea cod fishing ban

Ices, which advises governments on fishing quotas, has warned cod will die out unless stocks are allowed to recover, writes Hilary Osborne

Thursday October 19, 2006

Guardian Unlimited

http://environment.guardian.co.uk/conservation/story/0,,1926003,00.html

North Sea cod are being fished to unsustainable levels, Ices warns.

A complete ban on cod fishing in the North Sea is the only way to stop fish stocks running out, a group of international scientists will warn tomorrow.

Although cod quotas have decreased in recent years, research by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (Ices) shows that stocks in the North Sea remain depleted.

This is the fifth year running that Ices, which advises governments on fishing quotas, has suggested an end to cod fishing in the region, but the practice has continued and stocks have continued to dwindle.

Article continues Numbers of plaice and sole in the North Sea have also fallen, so much so that plaice stocks are below the recommended level and the rate at which sole is caught is no longer sustainable, Ices said.

Ices is recommending a reduction in catches of plaice and sole and a complete ban on fishing of sandeel and anchovies to allow North Sea stocks to recover.

However, a ban on cod fishing in the region would not necessarily mean an end to the UK's traditional fish and chips as the Ices report shows cod stocks in other areas, including the Barents Sea and around Iceland, are large and growing, while other species are thriving.

Stocks of the Norwegian spring-spawning herring are at sustainable levels, and Ices will recommend that higher catches be allowed next year. Numbers of northern hake are recovering, allowing increased quotas.

Martin Pastoors, the chair of the Advisory Committee on Fishery Management which reviewed the Ices findings, said the figures showed that prudent management of fish stocks could rebuild them.

"The Norwegian spring spawning herring stock is at a high level due to a rational exploitation strategy. Also the apparent recovery of the northern hake stock is a positive signal.

"Unfortunately we have not seen clear signals of recovery for the depleted cod stocks. These stocks have a high growth potential, but the continued catches from these stocks in combination with very low recruitment have prevented a recovery."

Dr Tom Pickerell, fisheries policy officer for World Wildlife Fund UK, said the Ices statement on fish stocks "makes depressing reading".

"This is the fifth year in a row their scientific advice recommends a zero catch of cod in the North Sea, west of Scotland, and the Irish Sea. The question remains when will politicians follow the scientific advice," he said.

European Union fishing quotas for 2007 will be drawn up in December. Last year the EU ignored recommendations that cod fishing be banned, instead cutting quotas by 15%.

Ices will publish its full report on fish stocks in the north-east Atlantic tomorrow.
