All the president’s mendacity

President Barack Obama grimly warned America last week that if his health care plans fail, the nation will go ‘bankrupt.’ Sure, adding another trillion-dollar entitlement program to our $12 trillion of debt may seem like a counterintuitive way to stave off economic ruin, but who are we to argue? The president’s got smarts. And as is the case with so many issues, Obama adorned his rhetoric with sharp warnings of calamity should he fail, fabricated consensus to buttress his case and a promise of rapture should he succeed...

When it comes to guaranteeing stability and promoting democracy, the United States’ record is pretty clear. ‘Global security’ and ’stability’ mean the security and stability of a particular global order guaranteed by the United States — a global order that reflects the interests of the coalition of class forces that control the American government. The United States’ record with regard to ‘enabling democracy’ is also clear. When it has best served the interests of the corporate world order to replace a dictatorship with a formal democracy, the United States has done so. Data shows stimulus package a waste of money
US News and World report
by Peter Roff

To put it kindly, the stimulus package that President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rushed through Congress at the beginning of his presidency has been a flop. It is not just that the $789 billion package has not had the effect the White House promised it would; it’s that it may actually have been counterproductive, actually lengthening the recession by effectively taking money out of the private economy, where it could have been used to create jobs and for investment purposes. Instead it has been parceled out by the government, which has been unable to track where it has gone or what impact it has really had on job creation. And that has led to any number of fallacious statements by senior administration officials about jobs ‘created or saved’...

Last month, President Obama announced that Khalid Sheik Mohammed would be transferred to New York, where he would stand trial in U.S. district court for his purported role as principal architect of the 9/11 attacks. At the same time, Obama announced that other terrorist suspects would continue to be tried for terrorism in the Pentagon’s military-commissions system, which was established after 9/11. Which judicial system is chosen — the federal courts or military commissions system — has important consequences for accused terrorists. What all too many Americans fail to realize, however, is the enormity of the impact that this dual system of justice has had on the country’s constitutional order. The precedents created here will extend far beyond the war on terror...
