Killing Civilians: How Safe Do You Actually Want to Be?

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "Almost like clockwork, the reports float up to us from thousands of miles away, as if from another universe. Every couple of days they seem to arrive from Afghan villages that few Americans will ever see without weapon in hand. Every few days, they appear from a world almost beyond our imagining, and always they concern death -- so many lives snuffed out so regularly for more than seven years now. Unfortunately, those news stories are so unimportant in our world that they seldom make it onto, no less off of, the inside pages of our papers."

What Are Afghan Lives Worth?

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "In the two weeks since, however, that's been on my mind -- or rather the lack of interest our world shows in dead civilians from a distant imperial war -- and all because of a passage I stumbled upon in a striking article by journalist Anand Gopal. In 'Uprooting an Afghan Village' in the June issue of the Progressive magazine, he writes about Garloch, an Afghan village he visited in the eastern province of Laghman. After destructive American raids, Gopal tells us, many of its desperate inhabitants simply packed up and left for exile in Afghan or Pakistani refugee camps."

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "The US occupation of Iraq, which has become the full responsibility of President Barack Obama, is once again a bloodbath. Health fears raised over bid to create wi-fi town

6:00pm Friday 24th April 2009

Concerns have been voiced over plans to make Barnoldswick the North of England’s first “wi-fi town”.

Residents believe the proposed web portal to make the wi-fi wireless network possible could have health implications.

And they are backed by experts, who say those exposed to electromagnetic fields could experience symptoms including memory problems or nausea.

Very real sins of torturing human beings

Torture

John Cory, Truthout: "Harsh interrogation techniques, coercive tactics, enhanced techniques - These are the rebranding tools for torture. In order to avoid turning our eyes away or burying our heads in the sand, we grab politically acceptable words and terms to diminish the sting and shame of actual torture, so we can brag about being a moral society open to the discussion of stressful questioning of enemy combatants. Sterile words remove us from the very real sins of torturing human beings."

Holder Won't Selectively Release Terror Memos

Devlin Barrett, The Associated Press: "Attorney General Eric Holder told Congress on Thursday he won't play 'hide and seek' with secret memos about harsh interrogations of terror suspects and their effectiveness.

Und anknüpfen an die Tradition von Seattle 1999: "Capitalism, no thanks - we will bury your banks!". All das nachzulesen in "Nationalize the banks?" publiziert im LBO am 20. April 2009: http://doughenwood.wordpress.com/2009/04/20/nationalize-the-banks/

Diese keineswegs amerikanische Spezialität untersucht in dem Beitrag "Stick Your Damn Hand In It: 20th Birthday of the Exxon Valdez Lie" Greg Palast in seinem Blog am 23. The torture commission trap

Not the better part of valor

The Jurist
by Marjorie Cohn

04/23/09

Ultimately, it is up to Obama to fulfill his constitutional duty to ensure that the laws are faithfully executed. As he seems inclined to shirk that duty, it is up to us to pressure him, and Congress to hold accountable, those who violate our laws. Obama said that ‘nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past.’ He is wrong. There is more to gain from upholding the rule of law. It will make future leaders think twice before they authorize the cruel, illegal treatment of other human beings...

If we are to stop torture in the future we need to send the clear message that if an official tortures, prosecutions will follow. Without that message the next President or even this one, can again put us on the page of torture by signing another executive order. And don’t think that won’t happen no matter how many commissions reach results saying the US should not have tortured. It will and Cheney, Hayden and other have said so...

Geithner plan: Another subsidy for the rich?

Our Future
by Isaiah J. Poole

04/23/09

The Obama administration this week got a warning shot across its bow against structuring a bank resuce plan that would amount to yet another taxpayer subsidy of the wealthy. It’s a shot that progressives who have the administration’s ear on economic policy need to echo. That shot was fired when Treasury Secretary William Geithner was grilled before the Congressional Oversight Panel on Tuesday. The panel is probing the federal government’s financial rescue efforts. Damon Silvers, associate general counsel for the AFL-CIO and a member of the panel, zeroed in on the administration’s plans for a Public-Private Investment Program, which would buy up so-called ‘toxic assets’ from financial institutions, using a mix of taxpayer and private-investor dollars...

Countries can’t inflate their way out of recession

Adam Smith Institute
by Tom Papworth

04/23/09

Somewhere in the hour-long spectacle that was today’s Budget Statement, Alistair Darling made a very interesting claim: ‘This Government, and others, have learnt from the historic economic mistakes of the interwar period, that countries cannot deflate their way out of recession.’ This is a fascinating statement for two reasons. Firstly, because history proves no such thing. In fact, I can think of very few, if any, examples where actively deflating the economy has been attempted. By comparison, inflation has been the stock response by governments across the globe for three quarters of a century, and the results have included the Winter of Discontent and Japan’s ‘Lost Decade’...

ACLU: DoD to release prisoner abuse photos

CNN

04/23/09

The Defense Department will release ‘a substantial number’ of photographs showing abuse of prisoners at prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. The release will be in response to an open-records lawsuit filed by the ACLU, the group said in a written statement. The statement released late Thursday said the photos were taken at facilities other than Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. ‘These photographs provide visual proof that prisoner abuse by U.S. personnel was not aberrational but widespread, reaching far beyond the walls of Abu Ghraib,’ Amrit Singh, an ACLU attorney, said in the release. The photos are to be released by May 28, the ACLU said...

Pentagon to Release Photos of Detainee Abuse

By Ann Scott Tyson

"This shows that the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib was not aberrational but was systemic and widespread," said Amrit Singh, an ACLU staff attorney involved with the 2004 Freedom of Information Act lawsuit that led to the promise to release the photographs. "This will underscore calls for accountability for that abuse." Singh called for an independent investigation into torture and prisoner abuse and said it should be followed, if warranted, by criminal prosecutions.

Seaton joy as mobile phone mast plan rejected

Last updated 07:20, Friday, 24 April 2009

PEOPLE who live and work in Seaton have welcomed news that plans for a 50ft mobile phone mast have been rejected.

Mobile phone company Telefonica O2 wanted to erect the mast in the grounds of Seaton Rugby Club but Allerdale council officers have rejected the plan, under delegated powers, because it would be an intrusive, alien and unneighbourly feature.

The planning report also stated that Telefonica O2 had not given enough consideration to alternative sites.

Parents, teachers and residents had expressed concern about visual impact, property devaluation and potential health risks.

Allerdale council received 17 letters of objection and a petition with 234 signatures.

The council also received objections from Seaton Parish Council and Camerton Parish Council.

Lesley Grace, headteacher of Seaton Infant School, said: “We are thrilled and delighted that this potential health risk has been removed."

MEP Liz Lynne calls for action on mobile phone masts

Coventry Telegraph - Coventry, England, UK

Now Warwickshire Lib Dem MEP Liz Lynne has called on the European Commission to do more to “dramatically reduce” the amount of mobile phone mast radiation ...

http://tinyurl.com/dbfn6f

To what research are they referring ? Certainly not Dr. Neil Cherry's, re the reduction of Melatonin in association with microwave emissions from transmitters. Proved by epidemiological tests in Schwarzenburg, Switzerland near a transmitter which had made peope ill for years! Nor the microwave expert Barrie Trower -see his Report on Tetra for the Police Federation and his 'Scrutiny' articles written for councillors' information. There is so much information proving the effects it would take me all day to write it here! Not to mention the evidence being ignored by the HPA; MTHR and the government - the symptoms suffered and which bear a direct relationship to the absence and strength of the emissions!

This 'rapid growth' has caused physical symptoms, not perceptions that 'maybe microwaves damage our health'! Not everyone suffers the same symptoms, because we have differing physiological strengths and weaknesses. e.g. Those with thicker skulls are less likely to suffer headaches.

It doesn't matter how many times we tell them, they won't listen until they absolutely have to! As France is asking for the precautionary measures (Sir William asked for them year ago!) and banning Wi-Fi until it is proved to be safe - and germany has told people not to use mobile phones but to use land-lines 0 and not to have anything to do with Wi-Fi - here's hoping the 'writing is on the wall' now!

Datenschutz: 22. Tätigkeitsbericht 2007-2008

Jetzt entschieden handeln!

Dringender Handlungsbedarf beim Arbeitnehmerdatenschutz

Earmarks: Don’t mend them, end them

Acton Institute
by John Pisciotta

04/22/09

What should be done about earmarks? Some Republicans and Democrats call for reform. I propose total elimination of this political cancer. It is sickening the body politic by damaging its moral culture, destroying the good faith in government that is required for a just and effective rule of law. An earmark is a ’small’ spending provision attached to an appropriations bill by a representative or senator for spending in his or her district or state. Individual earmarks, typically in the hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, are too insignificant to receive scrutiny in the legislative process...

Ten terrible truths about the CIA torture memos

The fatal thread

CounterPunch
by Chris Floyd

04/22/09

This is one reason why Barack Obama is so obviously reluctant to tug on the torture thread too hard. If you tear it out, with full-scale prosecutions and top officials locked up behind bars, the whole rotten skein would fall apart. Once you start genuinely subjecting government officials — including security apparatchiks and military brass — to the full extent of the law, there would be no end to the unraveling: senators, contractors, representatives, bureaucrats, generals, lobbyists, judges, corporate chiefs — the whole edifice of Establishment power would be shaken to the core as its leading lights went down, one after the other...

Ten terrible truths about the CIA torture memos, part 1

Future of Freedom Foundation

04/20/09

In their attempts to justify the use of torture by U.S. forces, Yoo and Bybee not only sought to redefine ’severe pain or suffering’ and ’severe mental pain or suffering;’ they also sought to nullify the concept of ’specific intent’ by providing a defense for anyone whose actions were undertaken ‘in good faith,’ and, in addition, noted, ‘Even if an interrogation method arguably were to violate Section 2340A, the statute would be unconstitutional if it impermissibly encroached on the President’s constitutional power to conduct a military campaign’...

Rice authorized waterboarding of Abu Zubaydah

La Crosse Tribune

04/22/09

As national security adviser to former President George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice verbally approved the CIA’s request to subject alleged al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah to waterboarding in July 2002, the earliest known decision by a Bush administration official to OK use of the simulated drowning technique. Rice’s role was detailed in a narrative released Wednesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee. It provides the most detailed timeline yet for how the CIA’s harsh interrogation program was conceived and approved at the highest levels in the Bush White House...

Hundreds fight phone mast bid

22 April 2009

By Andy Hughes

HUNDREDS of villagers have handed over letters objecting to plans for two mobile phone masts near their homes.

Vodafone wants to put up masts on two sites in Boldon – in Western Terrace, West Boldon, and on the Hutton Street Industrial Estate in Boldon Colliery.

But villagers living near both sites are unhappy about the plans and have vowed to fight them all the way.

More than 400 letters opposing the proposed masts have been handed into South Tyneside Council after mum-of-two Victoria Elphstone formed the protest group Boldon Against The Masts to urge fellow residents to put their objections in writing.

Beccles anger at phone mast

VICTORIA NICHOLLS

Last updated: 23/04/2009 08:48:00

Householders in Beccles say they should have been consulted before permission was granted for a new mobile phone mast.

However, the council insists it followed procedures correctly.

Gresham Road resident Melissa Squire said she was “mortified” after returning home to find a T-Mobile mast being put up on George Westwood Way, less than 100m from her home.

She said: “I think it's absolutely outrageous that they have let that mast go up without letting people know. I don't think that anybody in that council office would want it next to their home. It's really sneaky and downright unfair on all the people who live here.”

She said that she and neighbours were particularly worried about the potential impact on children's health, adding: “People's health is the most important thing. We don't seem to matter.”

Bush policies led to prisoner abuses

Dozens of Prisoners Held by CIA Still Missing, Fates Unknown

We pointed out that one of the newly released Bush-era memos inadvertently confirmed that the CIA held an al-Qaeda suspect [1] named Hassan Ghul in a secret prison and subjected him to what Bush administration lawyers called "enhanced interrogation techniques." The CIA has never acknowledged holding Ghul, and his whereabouts today are secret.

Torture orders 'came from the top'

TOP US officials, not a "few bad apples" of low rank, were behind harsh military interrogation tactics that spread from Guantanamo Bay to Afghanistan to Iraq, a new Senate report says.

Report: Bush policies led to prisoner abuses

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the committee's chairman, said the report shows that abuse of prisoners was sweeping and not, as former Bush administration defense official Paul Wolfowitz once said, the result of "a few bad apples." As the No. 2 defense official, Wolfowitz was a major architect of the Iraq war.

Obama Dances With Drones

Steve Weissman, Truthout: "In America's relations with Islamic countries, a peculiar dishonesty reigns. It is all so hush-hush, and often done with a wink and nod, as the rulers of these lands lead Washington to believe one story while telling their own people the opposite. The media reports are hard to forget: Arab nations wanted the Bush administration to invade Iraq. Sunni Arab leaders are urging Israel and the United States to bomb suspected nuclear sites in Shiite Iran. And, from The New York Times last week, 'Pakistan Rehearses Its Two-Step on Airstrikes.'"
