Bush-Era Rule Grants FBI Unprecedented Investigative Powers

Daphne Eviatar, The Washington Independent: "Veterans groups and conservatives roared last week when news broke that the FBI was targeting veterans in a broad probe of extremist groups. But little noise was made in December, when the Bush administration quietly granted the FBI wide-ranging authority to investigate individuals or groups, regardless of whether they are suspected of criminal activity. The Attorney General Guidelines, proposed last summer and adopted by Attorney General Michael Mukasey, appear to be particularly problematic."

Conyers to Hold Hearings on Torture Memos

Jared Allen, The Hill: "House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) on Tuesday announced that he will soon hold hearings on the Bush administration's legal memos justifying the use of numerous enhanced interrogation techniques. Conyers and other Democrats have labeled as torture the techniques explained in the memos, which provide a legal framework for the use of controversial interrogation practices such as waterboarding. President Obama recently declassified the memos written by Bush administration lawyers, which also detail for the first time a number of additional interrogation techniques approved for use by the Central Intelligence Agency."

"Bad Banks" seien in aller Munde.

Concern over mobile mast

Published: Tuesday, 21st April, 2009 11:30

By Mike Farrell

RESIDENTS of a Dumbarton housing scheme have raised concerns about an application to erect a phone mast in their community.

International telecommunication firm O2 hopes to put up a phone monopole in Bellsmyre.

But a residents group says it is worried about the radiation that the mast would emit and whether it poses a health risk.

This would be the first mobile phone mast in the scheme, although there are structures in other areas of the town — including another O2 pole in Strathleven Place, Dumbarton.

John Diamond, chair of Dumbarton North Community Council, believes that O2 needs to get round the table with Bellsmyre residents.

He said: “We are not going to just sit idly by and let O2 walk in and put something up.

Mr. President, war crimes must be investigated

Tortured posturing on harsh interrogation techniques

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

04/20/09

Although Barack Obama should be applauded for stopping torture by the U.S. government and pledging to close the infamous Guantanamo and worldwide CIA secret prisons, he is nevertheless playing politics with the issue to get the best of both worlds. To poke his predecessor, Obama released graphic memos from the Bush Justice Department that appallingly justified simulated drowning, sleep deprivation for extended periods (for example, an unbelievable 11 days), cramped confinement in a small dark box, stress positions for extended periods, forced nudity, and physical violence against detainees. At the same time, so as not to excessively rile the Republicans, who he must still work with to pass legislation, Obama said that CIA personnel who followed the twisted Bush legal guidelines authorizing such torture would not be prosecuted. He also came out against further inquiry into the matter because ‘nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past.’ What a relief that we do not follow the same philosophy when murders or other illegal acts occur...

Mr. President, war crimes must be investigated

I understand why President Obama doesn’t want to prosecute those who believed they were acting under laws written by the Office of Legal Counsel. But that is not the only policy he and other Democrats can pursue. … if we are truly a nation of laws, committed to the decency and morality we embrace, we cannot let people who justify or commit torture and other war crimes to escape prosecution...

Of course it was torture

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

04/20/09

On Thursday, the Obama administration released previously classified memos detailing interrogation techniques used against enemy prisoners. In the memos, Bush administration lawyers assured the CIA that waterboarding detainees and keeping them awake for a week or more was perfectly legal. Bush partisans insist that such methods aren’t torture, and that Obama has done grave harm to national security by revealing them. They’re wrong on both counts. Conservative legal analyst David Rivkin, one of Bush’s most reliable defenders, insists that ‘any fair-minded observer’ would conclude that the documents prove that ‘the Bush administration did not torture.’ But it’s hard to understand how anyone could call what the administration did by any other name. Rivkin’s assertion is on a par with left-wing diehards’ claim that President Clinton didn’t commit perjury...

Clueless Obama

If President Obama doesn’t understand why the economy tanked, he surely won’t know what recovery requires. And if he doesn’t know that, he’s surely part of the problem, not the solution. In his speech on the economy at Georgetown University this week, Obama again showed that he hasn’t a clue what caused the economic calamity. He spent a few paragraphs of his speech ‘explaining’ to the students what happened — but he got it wrong. Had this been a class, he should have gotten an F...

The nation’s ongoing economic woes should make for what kindergarten teachers refer to as a ‘teachable moment,’ as we must try to figure out the reasons that home prices are falling, jobs are evaporating, government budgets are awash in red ink and as scores of blue-chip companies and retailers go out of business. Even those citizens with stable incomes and secure nest eggs ought to at least have some intellectual curiosity about the hovering storm. Yet, unfortunately, one finds virtually no serious debate about economics. Everyone seems to agree on a handful of platitudes and cliches, and the nation’s political leaders — the folks who promise to navigate the ship of state around the protruding iceberg — seem most committed to advancing a storyline that ranges from the childishly absurd to the absurdly dishonest...

European prosecutors are likely to investigate CIA and Bush administration officials on suspicion of violating an international ban on torture if they are not held legally accountable at home, according to U.N. officials and human rights lawyers. … Some European countries, under a legal principle known as universal jurisdiction, have adopted laws giving themselves the authority to investigate torture, genocide and other human rights crimes anywhere in the world, even if their citizens are not involved. A Black President Doesn't Mean Racism Is Gone in America

Peter Phillips, Truthout: "Racial inequality remains problematic in the US. People of color continue to experience disproportionately high rates of poverty, unemployment, police profiling, repressive incarceration and school segregation. According to a new civil rights report, 'Reviving the Goal of an Integrated Society: A 21st Century Challenge,' by Gary Orfield, schools in the US are currently 44 percent nonwhite, and minorities are rapidly emerging as the majority of public school students. Latinos and blacks are the two largest minority groups. However, black and Latino students attend schools more segregated today than during the civil rights era."

Obama Open to Inquiry in Interrogation Abuses

President Obama on Tuesday left open the door to creating a bipartisan commission that would investigate the Bush administration's use of harsh interrogation techniques on terrorism suspects, and he did not rule out taking action against the lawyers who fashioned the legal guidelines for the interrogations.

Psychologists Helped Guide Interrogations

According to newly released Justice Department documents, the psychologist provided ideas, practical advice and even legal justification for interrogation methods that would break Abu Zubaida, physically and mentally. Extreme sleep deprivation, waterboarding, the use of insects to provoke fear -- all were deemed acceptable, in part because the psychologist said so.

Mast plan withdrawn

5:00pm Tuesday 21st April 2009

By Paul Rogers

A PLANNING application for a mobile phone mast in Ross-on-Wye has been withdrawn.

Telecommunications giant Vodafone had asked permission to put the 10-metre mast on the junction of Fernbank Road and Eastfield Road.

But Dr Ilana Clark, health and science specialist, said it had been withdrawn due to a change in Vodafone’s “technical requirements”.

Blackwater Out of Iraq? No, Not Yet

Matthew Lee And Mike Baker, The Associated Press: "Armed guards from the security firm once known as Blackwater Worldwide are still protecting US diplomats in Iraq, even though the company has no license to operate there and has been told by the State Department its contracts will not be renewed two years after a lethal firefight that stirred outrage in Baghdad. Private security guards employed by the company, now known as Xe, are slated to continue ground operations in parts of Iraq long into the summer, far longer than had previously been acknowledged, government officials told The Associated Press."

On Prosecuting War Crimes

Nick Mottern, Truthout: "Barack Obama is not given the right by our Constitution to be the judge and jury for torturers. I include Bush and Cheney in this category although they committed other war crimes. Mr. Obama and our Congress took oaths to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the land. They must be reminded that they must do this job regardless of whether they think it is divisive or not. If President Obama and the Congress do their jobs of enforcing the law with respect to torture and other Bush and Cheney war crimes, they will begin unraveling the web of deceit that has supported the Iraq and Afghanistan wars."

Council set to give phone mast go-ahead?

A CONTROVERSIAL mobile phone mast in Mansfield could be given the go ahead by councillors on Monday 27th — despite fears about its health impact.
Industry giant Vodafone wants to put the 8m-high mast next to a playing field at the end of Ladybrook Lane, near Rosemary Street, but residents are furious about the proposals.

Night is falling in America

Night is falling

The Libertarian Enterprise

There is an old saying that it is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness. Night is falling in America. The government is increasingly authoritarian, and increasingly bold about stealing property, thwarting individual liberty, occupying foreign countries, massacring women and children. Concentration camps are not a new thing in this country.

Politicians. Bureaucrats. Civil servants. Once upon a time these public poobahs knew their place; they worked for government and performed a service. Today they see it as their mission to rule, regulate and run absolutely every aspect of human existence. Politicians promulgate thousands of new laws every year. Bureaucrats relentlessly bombard us with regulations. Civil servants everywhere compel us to cope with a multitude of meaningless minutiae simply because they can. Rules, regulations and laws are meaningless unless they are rigorously enforced. And so the Thin Blue Line becomes the Thick Brute Slime and the Free State of America turns into the Police State of the political classes...

The idea that thought and speech are major obstacles to doing what is right isn’t new at all. As recently as the 1980s the one liberty that liberal statists could be counted on defending, at least in the United States of America, is the one spelled out in the First Amendment to the Constitution. Alas, this was challenged some time ago by Professor Catharine A. MacKinnon of the University of Michigan school of law, in her short but prominently published book, Only Words (Harvard University Press, 1983). In it the good professor argued that words do not deserve the legal protection afforded them by the Constitution since insults and put downs, including jokes, can injure people good and hard. And such injuries should not be protected. The victims would have to pay too high a price for the fact that the law treats such injuries as ‘only words’...

Obama keeps some Bush secrets

Despite a pledge to open government, the Obama administration has endorsed a Bush-era decision to keep secret key details of an FBI computer database that allows agents and analysts to search a billion documents with a wealth of personal information about Americans and foreigners. Biofuel from Corn Ethanol Is Not Renewable, Does Not Address Climate Change

Unique opportunity this week (by 24th) to setback food and ecosystem based biofuels. Please take action and forward now! And the other alerts to which you are forwarded still need sending too.

Dr. Glen Barry

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

Biofuel from Corn Ethanol Is Not Renewable, Does Not Address Climate Change

By Ecological Internet's Climate Ark project with Rainforest Rescue http://www.climateark.org/ & http://www.regenwald.org/international/englisch/ April 20, 2009

Let California Air Resources Board know all industrially produced biofuel crops from live biomass, edible or not, still require land, soil, water, fertilizer and other finite inputs. It is clear that industrial biofuels are not "renewable energy" given that these inputs are all in limited supply, and indirect land uses lead to destruction of soil and forest carbon sinks elsewhere.

BRIEF BACKGROUND: Regulators at the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are poised later this week to declare that biofuel from corn ethanol cannot help the state address climate change. In assessing the true environmental cost of corn ethanol, it was found this biofuel is worse than petroleum when total greenhouse gas emissions are considered. This is because as with all monocultures, corn ethanol for biofuels lead to numerous other indirect land use changes. Increased industrial agriculture results in rising land pressures and the loss of soil and forest carbon sinks elsewhere. Such a declaration disallowing corn ethanol biofuel from counting as emissions reductions would be a considerable blow to the corn-ethanol industry in the United States and would likely set a national precedent.

Ecological Internet and Rainforest Rescue are concerned with America's growing ethanol industry, and the precedent it sets for massive agricultural industrialization of the world's remaining rainforests and other natural wildlands. Please call upon the CARB to heed the overwhelming evidence that agrofuels worsen climate change through further deforestation and the destruction of other soils and ecosystems, drive food prices up, force more people worldwide into hunger, malnutrition and landlessness; and decimate biodiversity and ecosystems.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=corn_ethanol2

Victory as phone mast is refused

By Paul Cassell

April 21, 2009

Protesters are celebrating after town planners threw out proposals for a 13-metre high phone mast near their homes in Tilehurst.

Telecommunications giant Vodafone was refused planning permission to put up the mast and base cabinets on the corner of Elmstone Drive and Lower Elmstone Drive on Thursday.

A 200-signature petition and 27 letters of objection were received by Reading Borough Council opposing the mast with 36 more previously sent to Vodafone as part of an initial consultation.
