Pauli kritisiert europäische Institutionen

Harsche Kritik an den europäischen Institutionen hat die Europakandidatin der Freien Wähler, Gabriele Pauli, geäußert. "Wir haben ein riesiges Netz- und Regelwerk, das Lobbyisten in die Hände spielt", sagte sie am Dienstag bei der Vorstellung des Europawahlprogrammes der Freien Wähler in Würzburg. Europa sei ein "Club der Eliten", in dem sich Politiker, die an keiner Kontrolle interessiert seien, Frei- und Machträume geschaffen hätten.

A PLANNING application for a mobile phone mast in Ross-on-Wye has been withdrawn.

Telecommunications giant Vodafone had asked permission to put the 10-metre mast on the junction of Fernbank Road and Eastfield Road.

But Dr Ilana Clark, health and science specialist, said it had been withdrawn due to a change in Vodafone’s “technical requirements”.

The idea that thought and speech are major obstacles to doing what is right isn’t new at all. As recently as the 1980s the one liberty that liberal statists could be counted on defending, at least in the United States of America, is the one spelled out in the First Amendment to the Constitution. Alas, this was challenged some time ago by Professor Catharine A. MacKinnon of the University of Michigan school of law, in her short but prominently published book, Only Words (Harvard University Press, 1983). In it the good professor argued that words do not deserve the legal protection afforded them by the Constitution since insults and put downs, including jokes, can injure people good and hard. And such injuries should not be protected. The victims would have to pay too high a price for the fact that the law treats such injuries as ‘only words’...

Biofuel from Corn Ethanol Is Not Renewable, Does Not Address Climate Change

Let California Air Resources Board know all industrially produced biofuel crops from live biomass, edible or not, still require land, soil, water, fertilizer and other finite inputs. It is clear that industrial biofuels are not "renewable energy" given that these inputs are all in limited supply, and indirect land uses lead to destruction of soil and forest carbon sinks elsewhere.

BRIEF BACKGROUND: Regulators at the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are poised later this week to declare that biofuel from corn ethanol cannot help the state address climate change. In assessing the true environmental cost of corn ethanol, it was found this biofuel is worse than petroleum when total greenhouse gas emissions are considered. This is because as with all monocultures, corn ethanol for biofuels lead to numerous other indirect land use changes. Increased industrial agriculture results in rising land pressures and the loss of soil and forest carbon sinks elsewhere. Such a declaration disallowing corn ethanol biofuel from counting as emissions reductions would be a considerable blow to the corn-ethanol industry in the United States and would likely set a national precedent.

Ecological Internet and Rainforest Rescue are concerned with America's growing ethanol industry, and the precedent it sets for massive agricultural industrialization of the world's remaining rainforests and other natural wildlands. Please call upon the CARB to heed the overwhelming evidence that agrofuels worsen climate change through further deforestation and the destruction of other soils and ecosystems, drive food prices up, force more people worldwide into hunger, malnutrition and landlessness; and decimate biodiversity and ecosystems.

Protesters are celebrating after town planners threw out proposals for a 13-metre high phone mast near their homes in Tilehurst.

Telecommunications giant Vodafone was refused planning permission to put up the mast and base cabinets on the corner of Elmstone Drive and Lower Elmstone Drive on Thursday.

A 200-signature petition and 27 letters of objection were received by Reading Borough Council opposing the mast with 36 more previously sent to Vodafone as part of an initial consultation.

Umfassender Arbeitnehmerdatenschutz überfällig

Die Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft ver.di wirft der Drogeriekette Müller vor, gegen Datenschutzvorschriften verstoßen zu haben. Hierzu erklärt das Mitglied im Parteivorstand, Jan Korte (MdB):

18.000 Beschäftigte der Drogeriekette Müller sollen regelmäßig dem Arbeitgeber Auskunft über ihren Gesundheitszustand geben. Dieser Verdacht steht seit dem vergangenen Wochenende im Raum. Müller, eine Firma in der es Betriebsräten und Beschäftigten die einen solchen gründen wollen, nicht gerade einfach gemacht wird, hat anscheinend eigens einen Fragebogen entwickelt, den Mitarbeiter gemeinsam mit den Vorgesetzten bei Arbeitswiederaufnahme nach Krankheit auszufüllen haben. Nach den Datenskandalen bei der Telekom, der Bahn, Lidl, Airbus und Mercedes wird nun einem weiteren deutschen Unternehmen zumindest merkwürdiger Umgang mit Mitarbeiterdaten vorgeworfen. DIE LINKE hatte den Verdacht schon mehrfach geäußert, wonach hinter solchen Mitarbeiterüberprüfungen System stecke. Nun muss auch dem zuständigen Innenminister Schäuble endlich klar sein, dass nicht nur bei Müller, sondern demnächst vielleicht auch bei weiteren Firmen derartige Überwachungsmethoden öffentlich werden. Vielleicht könnte das Innenministerium dazu übergehen, eine tägliche Kolumne zu Verfehlungen deutscher Konzernzentralen zu veröffentlichen. Der Markt hierfür scheint schier unendlich. Besser wäre es, wenn die Forderung der LINKEN nach einer umfassenden Befragung deutscher Unternehmen durch das Bundesinnenministerium, ob auch sie mit gesetzeswidrigen Methoden ArbeitnehmerInnen durchleuchten und überwachen, endlich umgesetzt wird. Darüber hinaus ist es höchste Zeit für die Einführung eines umfassenden Arbeitnehmerdatenschutzrechts. Ein entsprechender Antrag der Linksfraktion liegt seit Dezember letzten Jahres vor.

PLANS for a 12-metre phone mast are being fought by residents who fear it will spoil the look of their area.

Families living in Trentham say they believe the masts could also have health implications and are objecting to the plans submitted by Vodafone.

The company wants to install the mast in Stone Road.

Vodafone specialists say they need the mast to improve the 3G coverage to supply broadband to customers in the area, but residents in the street do not agree.

Mother-of-one Lisa Harvey, aged 34, said: "Cosmetically this mast will look awful and will not be a nice view for people living here.

"I am also very concerned about the health implications of these masts.

"I have a young child and I do not want a phone mast right outside my house. There have been a lot of unclear health research results about these masts, so I don't trust them.

CIA interrogators used the waterboarding technique on Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the admitted planner of the Sept. 11 attacks, 183 times and 83 times on another al Qaeda suspect, The New York times said on Sunday. … The Justice Department memo said the simulated drowning technique was used on Mohammed 183 times in March 2003. The times said some copies of the memos appeared to have the number of waterboardings redacted while others did not...

A MOBILE phone company refused planning permission for a mast in Dronfield is making a new bid to erect a tower at the same location.

Telefonica O2 - whose previous application for the site outside the Talbot Arms pub, in Barnes Lane, was rejected by North East Derbyshire Council - is now proposing a mast disguised as a mock telegraph pole.

ANGRY residents have berated planners for a "lack of common sense" over proposals to install a mobile phone mast outside their homes in Kemsing.

Almost 30 residents attended a Kemsing Parish Council meeting to protest against the plans.

Mobile phone giant O2 wants to build a telecommunications mast, electrical control box and a surrounding fence on a grass verge outside houses in Childsbridge Road.

This came after its proposal to extend an existing mast, a few hundred metres along the road, by 2m was rejected by Sevenoaks District Council.

Stuart Robinson, of Childsbridge Lane, said: "We just all think it is a bit ridiculous, and no one wants a great big mast outside their front door.

"It is not ideal to have any masts at all but of the two we would much prefer the present one to be extended because it would be so much less disruptive.

"It is just a lack of common sense."

Clearly, the numbers were not ‘tens’ but ‘hundreds’ of thousands — and I’ve seen estimates of as many as 2500 cities. Given the numbers I’ve heard from various locations, I would say there is a very good chance that more than a million people participated: Durango 500, Cortez 200, Rapid City 1000, Spearfish 100, Casper 1000, Billings 500, Denver 5,000. And I suspect most were undercounted by the media. Indeed, there is strong evidence from more than one town that such is the case. The question now is, will people do this just once, or will they repeat it, and more important, back it up with more action? What kind? Refusal to cooperate with tax-agents, refusal to accept government contracts and money, demands for impeachment and resignation and constant pressure on politicians (and on the media) can be the next steps — but that will take more guts than showing up for a four-hour rally...
