Another Rossport?

An activist group in South County Dublin has threatened to create another “Rossport” type stand-off to halt the erection of a mobile phone mast in their community.

An Bord Pleanála last week ruled that the mast at Shankill Garda Station would constitute an exempted development and has granted permission for it to go ahead.

The decision was made in response to a Section 5 declaration by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council seeking clarification on whether the re-erection of the mast could be considered an exempted development.

In contrast, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council upheld a complaint by Dalkey residents in declaring that alterations to the telecommunications mast located at the Garda station there is not an exempted development under the planning laws.

In this case the council ruled that the erection of a mast would interfere with the protected structure of the Garda station.

For the last nine months residents have prevented Vilicom - telecommunications consultants for the Office of Public Works - from erecting the mast at Shankill.

About 60 similar sites are utilised under a deal with telecoms companies to establish mobile communications masts on Garda stations. But the OPW says it has about 400 sites available.

It is believed that the Government receives millions of euros from mobile phone companies from the lease of their buildings to accommodate mobile masts.

Hundreds of locals took part in three marches to protest against the erection of the mast and the health fears associated with it this year. More wrote letters of protest to Dún Laoghaire TDs Fiona O’Malley (PD), Barry Andrews (FF) and Education Minister Mary Hanafin (FF), asking them to intervene.

In a strongly worded statement last week, Shankill Community Against Radiation (SCAR) blasted local Fianna Fáil and Progressive Democrats TDs and threatened that locals would hit them where it hurts – at the ballot box - in the next general election.

The group also vowed that the site would remain blocked to Vilicom despite the An Bord Pleanála ruling.

“Any attempt by the OPW or Vilicom, their agents, to access the site will be vigorously resisted,” the statement reads. “And if the Governments want another Rossport scenario on their hands six months before an election then so be it.

“The PDs and Fianna Fáil need to decide if they will now start to support the Shankill community or if developers and big business, like phone companies, are more important. The decision is theirs. The people will give their verdict next May.”

It adds: “The people of Shankill are fed up getting second class treatment from the Government, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and from some of their public representatives. We will no longer tolerate it.”

The residents pointed to a recent successful campaign against a mast on a school in Terenure.

“The health and safety of the people of Shankill is obviously not as important as the health and safety of the people of Dalkey and Terenure,” the statement continues.

“The three Government TDs - Fiona O’Malley, Barry Andrews and Minister Mary Hanafin - now have to stand up and be counted.”

Earlier this year Minister Hanafin said in the Dáil that the situation would have to be reviewed if the mast was erected within 240 metres of nearby Scoil Mhuire.

Local Fine Gael councillor and general election candidate, John Bailey, last week called on the Government to change the law to ensure that the erection of mobile phone masts are not exempted developments under planning legislation.

“It is time for anomalies in legislation, which allow for the installation of commercial masts without planning permission, to be removed,” he said.

“It is clear that this Government lacks the will and the vision to examine and change such legislation.”

Dún Laoghaire TD (FF) Barry Andrews said: “I have worked very closely with the local community on this and on other issues and would fully intend to work with them in the future.

“What they do with their votes is their own matter and in a democracy they can do whatever they like. However, I am not going to change the way I work with the community on the basis of threats or inducements.”

BSE transmission to humans admitted after 10 years

It's twenty years since reports first appeared of cattle in the UK coming down with a disease now known as BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis). The number of animals affected rapidly increased, and because the disease was both fatal to cattle and also similar to at least two diseases that are fatal to humans, Creutzfeld Jacob Disease (CJD) and kuru, people began to worry about the danger to human health. For ten years, the government kept reassuring the public that there was no risk involved in eating beef. Many of us can still remember how the Secretary of State for Agriculture John Gummer was shown on television feeding a beefburger to his daughter to demonstrate how confident he was that it was safe.

Then, on 20 March 1996, the Secretary of State for Health Stephen Dorell announced that contrary to what he and his fellow ministers had been telling us for the past ten years, BSE can be transmitted to humans and in humans, it leads to an inevitably fatal disease known as variant CJD (vCJD).

That was a bit of a bombshell, with an immediate and lasting effect on public opinion. It probably did more than any other single event to shake the public's confidence in government pronouncements about science, and is one of the major reasons that the British public has steadfastly refused to accept GM food, despite constant insistence by government agencies that the products are “perfectly safe”.

The Politics of BSE is a story told by someone who was a senior civil servant in the then Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) throughout the period leading up to the BSE crisis and its aftermath, and was its Permanent Secretary from 1993 to 2000. Richard Packer describes the events as seen from the inside, combining the care and attention to detail of a Whitehall report with flashes of irony and invective. It's not an unbiased account, given the circumstances you could hardly expect one, but there is a lot to be learned from what Packer writes.

CAMPAIGNING residents have stepped up their fight to stop a church in Shirley being used as a mobile phone mast.

Around a dozen protested outside All Saints' Church of England Church on Sunday morning as the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Rev Thomas Butler, visited for its 50th anniversary.

And a hastily-convened public rally in the Baptist Hall on Wickham Road last Friday was attended by Croydon Central MP Andrew Pelling and ward councillors Mike Fisher and Richard Chatterjee.

Farm Drive resident Peter Howard said: "All but one of the 60 or so people attending were against the proposal, as were the local politicians."

The plan is for six antennae inside the Grade IIlisted building's bell tower, to boost Vodafone's coverage across a radius of around a mile.

The transmitters would face different directions for 360-degree coverage and would be installed in pairs. One would be for voice calls and another for so-called "3G" services such as video and picture messaging.

Both the Church of England's telecommunications installer QS4 and Vodafone insist there is no health risk.

They also say that the installation would not be visible from ground level.

The application, which will be ruled on later this month by Croydon Council, is an amended version of another turned down last year.

High seas bottom trawlers tear up an area of seabed more then 30 times the size of Spain each year.

Tell the EU Fisheries Commissioner and the Spanish ministers to stop lagging behind, and support a moratorium on high seas bottom trawling at the UN this year.

Now is not the time to retreat. Vote, and then find evidence to tell the story of what's really happening in U.S. elections.

Things may look relatively smooth on election day, but the real fun begins after the polls close. That's when we see a lot of strange things. Look for:

- Missing memory cards -- and remember, a memory card is a BALLOT BOX. This happens every election, to weird shrugs by election officials. About 70 ballot boxes went missing in Cuyahoga County during the May primary; a bunch went missing in Detroit last spring, and they've gone missing in places like Dekalb County Georgia, and various other locations. This is nothing to shrug about.

Remember when a single ballot box was missing in Florida in the 2000 election? Everyone was going crazy, but now, you have dozens and dozens of these memory cards, cartridges, and "PEBs" -- all are small digital ballots boxes -- they are going missing. Very troubling. Watch for it. See if you can spot it. Report it!

- Phantom votes -- this is when you have more votes than voters. There were about 100,000 more votes than voters in Tarrant County Texas during the primary, and more votes than voters in Ohio locations in 2004.

What to look for: Do a quick check of the number of registered voters and compare with the number of votes that show up. Bizarre anomalies appear almost every election.

Stage 2 is comparing the number of sign-ins in the pollbook with the number of votes that show up.

- Sometimes you see disappearing votes. The number of votes goes DOWN while the number of precincts counted goes UP. This happened in Mohave County Arizona in the 2004 primary, and in Memphis in the Aug. 2006 primary. Alert watchers of county Web results often spot this and capture it in screen saves.

What to do: Assign someone to capture screen shots each time the totals are updated and check for disappearing votes.

- Obstructed vote counting -- we often see obstructions to being able to see the vote counting, even beyond the obstruction of counting inside a black box. In San Diego in 2005, a member of the Black Box Voting board of directors, Jim March, was arrested for trying to view the vote counting. I myself was surrounded by six members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department when I had the audacity to ask if I could view the vote counting there, which was taking place in a room no one could see. We expect to get many reports from citizens who are not allowed to view vote counting.

If you are obstructed from viewing the central tally process, report it.

- In the 10 days following the election, you can expect to see many unusual things pop up in the public records that are obtained by candidates.

Of particular interest are the "event logs" that you get from Microsoft Windows, which runs most of the tallying software. This can show extra programs being run.

Also of great interest are the voting machine event logs, which can show crazy voting dates -- like in Palm Beach County in 2004, where more than 4 dozen voting machines had votes time and date-stamped weeks before the election, sometimes in the middle of the night, and Volusia County Florida in the same election, where a machine had votes date-stamped more than 10,000 years in the future. In San Diego in the June 2006 primary, the voting system event log shows that it dialed out to Diebold at 9:31 pm during the middle of its counting.

- We also anticipate many peculiarities with provisional votes, extra optional paper ballot votes, absentee votes and various obstructions to voting around the country.

- Another thing we look for is strange statistical patterns, like voting machines from one manufacturer giving results different from all the others, or one type of machine giving discrepant results, as happened in New Mexico in 2004. We saw three candidates in a row get 18,181 votes in Comal County Texas and one district in Minnesota had all the minor party candidates get the same vote percentage -- despite very big differences in how well known the candidates were.

On election day itself, we'll see vote-flipping, where people vote for one candidate and another one's name pops up. And we'll see many other unusual things.

I expect surprising new problems, like the new electronic poll books having problems finding themselves, and voting machines that don't match themselves (for example, having different results on their paper tape than they do on their screens).

Document. Think photos, videos, and most of all, cleverly constructed requests for documents. You have the right to obtain a copy of just about any document you can think of, as long as it exists. Go hunting. See what you find.

When you find important information, propagate it. Don't just call it into one place, but e-mail it, send it to bloggers, give it to reporters, provide it to public officials.

We want to improve elections, but first we need to make a solid, indisputable case. And to do that, we all need to get into action.

Use your own common sense. Document. Propagate. Then push solutions through for true citizen oversight. Now is your chance to take back your electoral process!

Be very clear about your job as a citizen right now: It is to reverse the swing of the pendulum. It's been swinging away from citizen control -- your job is to take back your government. Start at the local level.

You own your government -- not the other way around. It is time to get out of your chair, step away from the Internet, and get involved in citizen oversight.

We salute the extraordinary citizens who are taking back America.

Zum derzeit in Nairobi tagenden Klimagipfels erklärt der stellvertretende Parteivorsitzende Wolfgang Methling:

Es ist längst kein Geheimnis mehr und allgemein unbestritten, dass der Klimawandel in vollem Gange ist. Man muss auch kein Prophet sein, um vorauszusagen, dass die Länder der dritten Welt bereits jetzt, noch mehr aber in Zukunft am stärksten davon betroffen sind. Die wesentlich umfangreichere Verminderung der Treibhausgase muss deshalb in Nairobi verbindlich vereinbart werden. Das ist insbesondere eine Forderung an die westlichen Industrieländer, China und Indien. Die Linkspartei.PDS sieht den einzig erfolgreichen Weg im bedeutenden Ausbau der erneuerbaren Energien. Dafür muss sich Deutschland stark machen und nicht weiter über neue Kohlekraftwerke und den Ausbau der Kernenergiegewinnung nachdenken.

It could be a case of third time unlucky for families living on a city estate who have twice won victories against a mobile phone mast - only to face the uncertainty of an appeal.

Telecommunications giant O2 is contesting Broadland District Council's decision to reject plans for a 12.5metre mast in Dussindale Drive, Thorpe St Andrew.

Planning chiefs told the company back in July the site would be an eyesore and said they should consider sharing another site as there was already a 10 metre mast, operated by Orange, opposite the proposed site.

Initial plans for a mast on a plot of land at Vane Close, off Dussindale Drive, were withdrawn by O2 in March after it emerged it would be right next to the £4m primary school being built there.

Michelle Dickerson, 31, a mum of two who lives in nearby Association Way, headed the campaign against the mast on Dussindale Drive and is furious an appeal has been lodged.

“We had a letter come through last week saying they were going to appeal it,” she said. “I am angry about it but did expect that they might - O2 seem to be quite persistent in trying to get a mast through. It's obvious they are going to put a mast up here somewhere, but it just has to be somewhere everyone is happy with it.

“There's no proof that the masts are harmful or not. However my family are standing up for what it said in the Stewart report that they should not be near homes or schools until it is proven that they are safe.”

Mrs Dickerson, who lives with her husband Stuart, said it is not just the health fears which concern her or her family - but the visual intrusion of the structure.

“I have taken pictures of where the existing mast is and where the proposed O2 mast will be,” she said. “Four rooms will be looking out onto this intrusion. These two front bedrooms are being used by my four-year-old and 16-month-old. How can O2 say it is acceptable with regard to residential amenity?

“The Orange mast only got put there because it was put in before the houses were built. We had no say on that one, however, we do have a say on this one. Placing the mast on the opposite side of this one will give the appearance of rugby posts.”

The Evening News has fought against the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe through our Put Masts on Hold campaign.

As the Evening News reported last week families living in Dussindale are fighting another mast application by 3, formerly Hutchinson 3G, for a 22.5metre mast on land near to the Fitzmaurice Pavilion at Pound Lane, Thorpe St Andrew.

More than 100 people turned up to object to plans for that mast at a meeting at the Dussindale Community Centre on Monday, October 30.

Kanzlerin Merkel hat heute vor Arbeitgebern die Einführung eines gesetzlichen Mindestlohnes kategorisch ausgeschlossen. Dazu erklärt die stellvertretende Parteivorsitzende Katja Kipping:

Senkung der Lohnnebenkosten zu Lasten der Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmer, Senkung der Unternehmenssteuern, Lockerungen beim Kündigungsschutz... Die Liste, die über die Frage des Primats von Politik oder Wirtschaft aufklärt, ist lang. Wieder einmal hat der Arbeitgeberpräsident die Kanzlerin vorgeführt und ihr diesmal ein kategorisches NEIN zu einem gesetzlichen Mindestlohn in Deutschland abgerungen. Damit steht die deutsche Wirtschaft und ihre Kanzlerin Merkel gegen die europäische Normalität. Ein gesetzlicher Mindestlohn, wie ihn auch die Linkspartei.PDS fordert, verhindert nicht nur einen weiteren Abwärtstrend der Lohnspirale und dämmt Schwarzarbeit ein, sondern sorgt für ein Leben in Würde und ohne Armut. Ein gesetzlicher Mindestlohn stärkt die Binnenkaufkraft und kurbelt so die Wirtschaft an. Sich einem gesetzlich garantierten Mindestlohn zu verweigern, heißt Armut und Dumpinglöhne zu akzeptieren, bedeutet die Erpressbarkeit von Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmern in Kauf zu nehmen. Ein sozial gerechtes Gemeinwesen braucht einen gesetzlichen Mindestlohn, der armutsfest ist. Die Linkspartei wird weiter dafür kämpfen.

Betriebsratsvorsitzender wegen kritischer Haltung zu 1-Euro-Jobs gekündigt

Am Mittwoch, den 29.11.2006, findet um 13:15 Uhr der Kammertermin zur fristlosen Kündigung des Betriebsratsvorsitzenden Rolf Kohn vor dem Arbeitsgericht in Herne statt. Hier soll geklärt werden, ob es eine Absprache zwischen dem Heimleiter, Karl-Heinz Hufnagel, und dem Betriebsrat über die Abrechnung der Gelder für das Frühstück einzelner Betriebsratsmitglieder gegeben hat. Ist eine ausreichende Klärung nicht möglich, wird ermittelt, ob Rolf Kohn als Verwaltungsangestellter zu viel oder zu wenig Geld abgerechnet hat. Dazu muss ggf. ein weiterer Verhandlungstermin anberaumt werden.

„Einer Meldung der englischen Tageszeitung The Guardian zufolge erprobt man in Großbritannien den Einsatz eines Lügendetektors im Bereich der öffentlichen Sozialfürsorge. Getestet wird das System in Harrow, einer Vorstadt von London. Anrufer, die das dortige Job Centre kontaktieren, das für Sozialhilfe- und Arbeitslosengeld zuständig ist, werden zunächst von einem Stimmcomputer begrüßt. Dieser stellt zunächst einfache Fragen und zeichnet die Antworten auf. Nach diesem biometrischen Enrolment werden im Laufe des weiteren Telefongesprächs die Stimmen der Anrufer analysiert, ob sich verdächtige Muster in der Stimme zeigen. Nachbarn, Vermieter). Gesucht werden motivierte, durchsetzungsfähige und belastbare Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen mit sozial-kommunikativer und persönlicher Kompetenz. Teamfähigkeit sowie die Fähigkeit zur Kontaktaufnahme, zur Informationsbeschaffung und zum Informationsaustausch wird vorausgesetzt. Hartz-IV-Show: Verbände sprechen von "Hetzjagd"

„Am Mittwoch startet die Sat.1.-Dokureihe "Gnadenlos gerecht". Darin ermitteln Sozialarbeiter angebliche Hartz-IV-Schmarotzer. Schon jetzt regt sich Protest. Veranstaltet der Sender eine "öffentliche Hetzjagd" auf sozial Schwache? Die neue Sat.1-Serie über "Hartz-IV-Betrüger" hat schon vor dem Sendestart am Mittwoch Proteste ausgelöst. Der Arbeitslosenverband Deutschland sprach in Berlin am Montag von einer "öffentlichen Hetzjagd auf Hartz-IV-Empfänger" und einer "negativen Stimmungsmache". Sat.1 betonte dagegen, die Sendung berichte "in ausgewogener Form über die gesellschaftliche Realität". Unter dem Serientitel "Gnadenlos gerecht - Sozialfahnder ermitteln" begleitet ein Kamerateam zwei Sozialamtsmitarbeiter im Kreis Offenbach in Hessen: die Abteilungsleiterin Helena Fürst und Geschäftsstellenleiter Helge Hofmeister. "Wir sind ja Profis, da wir schon im 'Sat.1-Magazin', im 'Sat.1-Frühstücksfernsehen' und in '24 Stunden' dabei waren. Jedoch ist es immer wieder eine willkommene Abwechslung in unserem Alltag", sagte die 34-jährige Ermittlerin in einem Interview des Senders. Helena Fürst hat es bereits zu einiger Berühmtheit gebracht. Besuch beim Schnüffler. Oldenburg: Protest gegen Hausbesuche bei Hartz-IV-Beziehern. Erwerbslose klingeln bei ­ehemaligem Außendienstmitarbeiter der ARGE

„Am Sonntag abend, zur besten Tatort-Krimizeit, haben sich in Oldenburg rund 50 Erwerbslose zu einem Date getroffen. Sie machten einen überraschenden Hausbesuch bei einem Außendienstmitarbeiter der ARGE, der Arbeitsgemeinschaft aus Sozialamt und Agentur für Arbeit, die in den Städten die Leistungen nach Hartz IV verwaltet. Strafantrag gegen Sat.1 Sozialfahnder

Der Ansturm der Entrüstung über die Sat.1 TV Doku-Serie "Gnadenlos gerecht - Sozialfahnder ermitteln" reißt nicht ab. Nun hat die Arbeitslosenhilfe Rheinland Pfalz einen schriftlichen Strafantrag gegen Protagonisten der TV Dokusoap gestellt. Inhalt der gestellten Anzeige ist die Annahme, dass die Sozialfahner der Arge Kreis Offenbach "Informationen und Kenntnisse, welche Sie durch Ihre Tätigkeit bei dem Sozialamt Offenbach erlangt haben, rechtswidrig an Dritte weiter gegeben" haben. Weiterhin wird durch die Arbeitsloseninitiative vermutet, dass sich "die beiden Mitarbeiter des Sozialamtes durch diese Weitergabe interner Ermittlungsergebnisse ungerechtfertigt bereichert haben".

Unverhoffter Hausbesuch von Hartz IV Sozialfahndern. Wie eine alleinerziehende Mutter sogenannte Sozialfahnder vor der Tür stehen ließ

Karola H. lebt in Berlin, ist auf Hartz IV Sozialleistungen angewiesen sowie alleinerziehende Mutter von drei Kindern. Ganz unverhofft klingelte es um 10.30 Uhr an ihrer Tür. Zwei Mitarbeiter des Jobcenters Berlin-Spandau standen vor der Tür und verlangten nachdrücklich Einlass. Sie wollten sich "ein Bild machen, wie sie wohl so wohnen und leben würde".

Daten von 38 Behörden: Merkel besteht auf so genannter Anti-Terror-Datei

Die Terrorgefahr in Deutschland ist nach Darstellung von Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) unvermindert hoch. Daher müsse der Staat alles tun, die Gefahren rechtzeitig zu erkennen, um ihnen begegnen zu können, so Merkel am Montag bei einem Besuch des Gemeinsamen Terrorismusabwehrzentrums (GTAZ) in Berlin deutlich. Sie betonte die Notwendigkeit, die jahrelang umstrittene Anti-Terror-Datei rasch einzurichten. Im Dezember vergangenen Jahres hatte das Bund-Länder-Projekt mit der Zustimmung im Bundesrat die letzte Hürde genommen. In die Anti-Terror-Datei sollen künftig Daten von 38 Behörden von Bund und Ländern eingespeist werden.

Der Datenschutz soll vornehmlich durch eine Trennung von offenen Grunddaten und erweiterten Daten, die erst aufgrund einer Anfrage oder im "Eilfall" freigeschaltet werden, gewährleistet sein. Elfstellige Zahlenfolge: Alle Deutschen erhalten eine Nummer Berlin/Bonn (dpa/tmn) - Alle Deutschen bekommen eine Nummer: Vor allem die Steuerbehörden wollen die Bürger künftig anhand einer elfstelligen Zahlenfolge erkennen können.

Die ID vergibt das Bundeszentralamt für Steuern.

Die neue Identifikationsnummer wird vom Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (BZSt) in Bonn vergeben und soll den Abgleich von Daten erleichtern. Gleichzeitig sollen der Missbrauch von Sozialleistungen sowie Steuerhinterziehung erschwert werden. Der 1. Juli 2007 markiert den Start des Verfahrens für die 5.200 Meldebehörden in Deutschland, erläutert Oliver Heyder-Rentsch, Sprecher des Bundesfinanzministeriums in Berlin. Aus den Melderegistern werden Daten an das BZSt übermittelt, wo die Informationen verglichen werden. "Damit soll vermieden werden, dass einem Bürger mehrere Identifikationsnummern zugeteilt werden." Die Vergabe der Nummern erfolge dann erst in einem zweiten Schritt. "Wann dieses Verfahren letztlich abgeschlossen sein wird, hängt von der Güte der gelieferten Meldedaten ab. Die dazu erforderlichen Untersuchungen und Vorbereitungen sind noch nicht abgeschlossen." Entschieden ist bereits, dass die Bürger per Brief informiert werden sollen. "Wegen der Vielzahl von zu verschickenden Mitteilungen wird die Versendung nicht zu einem Zeitpunkt, sondern über einen gewissen Zeitraum erfolgen", erklärt Heyder-Rentsch. Gemeinsam mit der Identifikationsnummer werden einige persönliche Daten abgespeichert. So etwa der Familienname, frühere Namen, Vornamen und ein eventueller Doktorgrad, erläutert Anita Käding, Referentin für Steuerrecht und Steuerpolitik beim Bund der Steuerzahler in Berlin. Hinzu kommen der Tag und Ort der Geburt, Geschlecht und die gegenwärtige Anschrift.

Im Alltag werde der persönliche Zahlencode für die wenigsten Menschen eine Bedeutung haben, meint Käding. Diese Nummer ersetze in erster Linie die bisherige Steuernummer. Es müsse niemand Angst haben, seine Nummer zu vergessen oder zu verlieren. "Da die Nummer und die dazugehörige Person eindeutig zuzuordnen sind, sollte es kein Problem sein, seine verlustig gegangene Nummer wieder zu erhalten. Der Sprecher des Deutschen Steuerberaterverbandes, Rechtsanwalt Markus Deutsch, weist darauf hin, dass manche Menschen zwei Zahlenfolgen zugewiesen bekommen. "Gleich zwei ID-Nummern bekommen diejenigen, die auch noch wirtschaftlich tätig sind. Das ist sehr weit gefasst und gilt für Handwerker genauso wie für Freiberufler." Die Nummer helfe den Finanzämtern bei ihrer Arbeit. Doch nicht nur den Finanzämtern müssten die Steuerzahler ihre Nummer mitteilen. "Auch der Arbeitgeber muss, um Lohnsteuer abzuführen, die ID-Nummer kennen. Er darf seine Mitarbeiter daher danach fragen." Die Gefahr, dass Kriminelle fremde Nummern missbrauchen, sieht Deutsch nicht. Wehren können sich die Verbraucher nach Kädings Einschätzung ohnehin nicht gegen die Neuerung. Sie beklagt vor allem, dass Bürger nicht kontrollieren könnten, was mit ihren Daten geschehe. "Durch die Einführung der Identifikationsnummer und der daraus resultierenden enormen Ausweitung des Datenaustausches zwischen Behörden und anderen Stellen wird beim Bundesamt für Finanzen ein gigantischer Datenpool geschaffen. Dies sieht der Bund der Steuerzahler sehr kritisch."

Zur derzeitigen Debatte um Kündigungsschutz und Arbeitslosengeld für ältere Arbeitnehmer erklärt die stellvertretende Parteivorsitzende Katja Kipping:

Es ist schon aberwitzig, was derzeit auf der politischen Bühne der Union abläuft. Frei nach dem Motto: Hauptsache, mein Name ist richtig geschrieben!, versuchen einzelne Ministerpräsidenten und Spitzenpolitiker der Union sich derzeit massiv neben der Kanzlerin und auf Kosten des Koalitionspartners SPD zu profilieren. Das ist auch ihr gutes Recht, zumal die SPD derzeit kaum das Prädikat sozial oder sozialdemokratisch verdient. Dass sie aber versuchen, ihre Profilierungskämpfe auf Kosten der Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmer auszutragen, ist unredlich. Mit vollmundigen Versprechen und falschen Behauptungen versuchen sie, ältere und jüngere Arbeitnehmer gegeneinander auszuspielen und einer Lockerung des Kündigungsschutzes das Feld zu bereiten. Die jetzigen Äußerungen sind das Kontrastprogramm zur realen Politik von CDU und CSU, die sich bislang immer für eine Verkürzung der Bezugszeiten des Arbeitslosengeldes und finanzielle Kürzungen bei Hartz-IV-Beziehern eingesetzt haben.

1. IT'S A NATIONAL REFERENDUM. Although candidates' names will be on the ballot today, this election is NOT about this candidate or that candidate. Make no mistake about it: This election is nothing less than a National Referendum on George W. Bush and his War. Don't waste your time trying to learn about who the schlump is that's running for office. You know they're all pretty much the same, a few are better than others, but... please. They is who they is. THIS election is not about them. It's a simple up or down vote on staying the course.

To vote in favor of the war, vote for the Republican. To vote against the war, vote for the Democrat. As crazy as it sounds, even if the Republican is against the war, or the Democrat is for it, it doesn't matter. All that will matter by midnight tonight is the math on the big tote board. Did America say YES to Bush or NO to Bush? The ONLY way they're going to add it up is by counting the number of votes under the big D and the big R. The only way to take a stand against Bush today is to vote for the Dems on the ballot.

2. IN ORDER TO CATCH THE REPUBLICANS STEALING YOUR VOTE, YOU FIRST HAVE TO VOTE. There are huge and valid concerns about the new electronic voting machines that must be addressed. It is far too easy to use new technology to rig the vote. But if your fear of that leads you to decide that you shouldn't bother voting, well, then, I guess they've succeeded in snuffing out your voice without having to rig the machine. Make them break the law if they want to win. Vote. We'll catch them if they do. I promise.

3. WITH THE DEMOCRATS IN POWER IN THE HOUSE AND/OR SENATE, WE CAN GO AFTER THEM! These spineless Democrats who enabled Bush to start this war and funded it ever since are due for a shellacking from all of us. For nearly 6 years, they've hidden behind the cop-out of, "Hey, we're the minority, we have no power." As of tomorrow, hopefully, they will have no mask to hide behind. And it will be up to us to go after them.

4. I'LL PUT YOU ON MY WEBSITE. That's right. You can appear on my home page and be seen by millions later today. All you need to do is bring a broom when you go to vote. The broom is our mascot today because we're going to sweep the crooks and the warmongers outta office. Take a picture of yourself holding a broom outside your polling place, e-mail it to me, and I'll put as many of you as I can up on the home page of my website. People all around the world will see you! Government files with your name on them will be initiated! What better way to celebrate this historic day?!

5. 2,836 + 655,000. Each one of them, American and Iraqi, are no longer with us because of the decision by one man to start a war. Each one of them represented a precious, God-given life that no man had the right to take away. Each one of them had a mother and father, sisters, brothers, husbands, wives, friends and loved ones, little boys and little girls. It's mad, my friends, utterly mad, this senseless loss of human life.

So, do it for them. Call up whoever you know and tell them to meet you at the polls. And tell them to bring a broom, real or imaginary, with a big D on it. It's the only true American thing to do.

TEACHERS have been ordered to ban their pupils from using their mobile phones amid rising safety fears. UK Education secretary David Blunkett has taken the unusual step of writing to ALL schools in England and Wales. Mr Blunkett said mobile phones should only be used by pupils under 16 in EMERGENCIES.

A spokesman for Mr Blunkett said: "We felt we had to issue guidance on the widespread use of mobile phones in schools. The department of Health is taking the lead but we have a responsibility where pupils are concerned. We felt we had to get the message across that the non-essential use of mobile phones should be discouraged."

Mr Blunkett's order to schools follows an investigation led by ex-Government chief scientist Sir William Stewart earlier this year. He warned that children could be susceptible to damage from radiation because their immune system is not fully developed. He also pointed out that the younger the child, the more years they could be exposed to radiation.

The report backed claims that minor health complaints like headaches, earaches and skin problems may be linked to mobiles.

Here's how the 2006 mid-term election was stolen.

Note the past tense. And I'm not kidding.

And shoot me for saying this, but it won't be stolen by jerking with the touch-screen machines (though they'll do their nasty part). While progressives panic over the viral spread of suspect computer black boxes, the Karl Rove-bots have been tunneling into the vote vaults through entirely different means.

For six years now, our investigations team, at first on assignment for BBC TV and the Guardian, has been digging into the nitty-gritty of the gaming of US elections. We've found that November 7, 2006 is a day that will live in infamy. Four and a half million votes have been shoplifted. Here's how they'll do it, in three easy steps:

Theft #1: Registrations gone with the wind.

On January 1, 2006, while America slept off New Year's Eve hangovers, a new federal law crept out of the swamps that has devoured 1.9 million votes, overwhelmingly those of African-Americans and Hispanics. The vote-snatching statute is a cankerous codicil slipped into the 2002 Help America Vote Act -- strategically timed to go into effect in this mid-term year. It requires every state to reject new would-be voters whose identity can't be verified against a state verification database.

Sounds arcane and not too threatening. But look at the numbers and you won't feel so fine. About 24.3 million Americans attempt to register or re-register each year. The New York University Law School's Brennan Center told me that, under the new law, Republican Secretaries of State began the year by blocking about one in three new voters.

How? To begin with, Mr. Bush's Social Security Administration has failed to verify 47% of registrants. After appeals and new attempts to register, US Elections Assistance Agency statistics indicate 1.9 million would-be voters will still find themselves barred from the ballot on Tuesday.

But don't worry: those holding passports from their ski vacations to Switzerland are doing just fine. And that's the point. It's not the number of voters rejected, it’s their color. For example, California's Republican Secretary of State Bruce McPherson figured out how to block 40% of registrants, mostly Hispanics. In a rare counter-move, Los Angeles, with a Hispanic mayor, contacted these citizens, "verified" them and got almost every single one back on the rolls. But throughout the rest of the West, new Hispanics remain victims of the "José Crow" treatment.

In hotly contested Ohio, Kenneth Blackwell, Secretary of State and the Republican's candidate for Governor, remains voter-rejection champ -- partly by keeping the rejection criteria a complete secret.

Theft #2: Turned Away - the ID game

A legion of pimple-faced Republicans with Blackberries loaded with lists of new voters is assigned to challenge citizens in heavily Black and Hispanic(i.e. Democratic) precincts to demand photo ID that perfectly matches registration data.

Sounds benign, but it's not. The federal HAVA law and complex new ID requirements in states like New Mexico will easily allow the GOP squads to triple the number of voters turned away. Rather than deny using these voter suppression tactics, Republican spokesmen are claiming they are "protecting the integrity of the vote."

I've heard that before. In 2004, we got our hands on fifty confidential internal memos from the files of the Republican National Committee. Attached to these were some pretty strange spreadsheets. They called them "caging lists" -- and it wasn't about zoo feeding times. They were lists (70,000 for Florida alone) of new Black and Jewish voters -- a very Democratic demographic -- to challenge on Election Day. The GOP did so with a vengeance: In 2004, for the first time in half a century, more than 3.5 million voters were challenged on Election Day. Worse, nearly half lost their vote: 300,000 were turned away for wrong ID; 1.1 million were allowed a "provisional" ballot -- which was then simply tossed out.

Tomorrow, new federal ID requirements and a dozen new state show-me-your-ID laws will permit the GOP challenge campaign to triple their 300,000 record to nearly one million voters blocked.

Theft #3: Votes Spoiled Rotten

The nasty little secret of US elections is that three million ballots are cast in national elections but not counted -- 3,600,380 not counted in 2004 according to US Election Commission stats. These are votes lost because a punch card didn't punch (its chad got "hung"), a stray mark voided a paper ballot and other machinery glitches.

Officials call it "spoilage." I call it, "inaugurating Republicans." Why? According to statisticians working with the US Civil Rights Commission, the chance your vote will "spoil" this way is 900% higher for Black folk and 500% higher for Hispanics than for white voters. When we do the arithmetic, we find that well over half of all votes spoiled or "blank" are cast by voters of color. On balance, this spoilage game produces a million-vote edge for the GOP.

That's where the Black Boxes come into play. Forget about Karl Rove messing with the software to change your vote. Rather, the big losses occur when computers crash, fail to start or simply don't respond to your touch. They are the new spoilage machines of choice with, statistically, the same racial bias as the old vote-snatching lever machines. (Funny, but paper ballots with in-precinct scanners don't go rotten on Black voters. Maybe that's why Republican Secretaries of State have installed so few of them.)

So Let's Add it Up

Two million legitimate voters will be turned away because of wrongly rejected or purged registrations.

Add another one million voters challenged and turned away for "improper ID."

Then add yet another million for Democratic votes "spoiled" by busted black boxes and by bad ballots.

And let's not forget to include the one million "provisional" ballots which will never get counted. Based on the experience of 2004, we know that, overwhelmingly, minority voters are the ones shunted to these baloney ballots.

And there's one more group of votes that won't be counted: absentee ballots challenged and discarded. Elections Assistance Agency data tell us a half million of these absentee votes will go down the drain.

Driving this massive suppression of the vote are sophisticated challenge operations. And here I must note that the Democrats have no national challenge campaign. That's morally laudable; electorally suicidal.

Add it all up -- all those Democratic-leaning votes rejected, barred and spoiled -- and the Republican Party begins Election Day with a 4.5 million-vote thumb on the vote-tally scale.

So, what are you going to do about it? May I suggest you … steal back your vote.

It's true you can't win with 51% of the vote anymore. So just get over it. The regime's sneak attack via vote suppression will only net them 4.5 million votes, about 5% of the total. You should be able to beat that blindfolded. If you can't get 55%, then you're just a bunch of crybaby pussycats who don't deserve to win back America.

The World and Brazil in particular have come a long way in recent years regarding acknowledging the need to protect the world's rainforests and climate, and developing policy sufficient for doing so. Not so long ago Brazil's government railed against any suggestion by the international community that the Amazon should be protected. Now at the international climate talks in Kenya the Brazilian government has asked "rich nations to back a plan to help it slow deforestation". Along with other tropical rainforest rich countries like Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica, it has proposed that a fund be established "that developing countries can tap after they prove they have slowed initial deforestation rates".

This proposal definitely represents progress towards solving two of the world's most dire ecological crises - terrestrial habitat loss and global warming/heating. But as always with such proposals, the devil is in the details. Forest diminishment such as what is caused by "selective" logging and other industrial developments permanently lowers the ability of ancient forests to hold carbon. To be truly effective, such climate funding for forest conservation must protect against deforestation as well as all other ecological diminishment of large, contiguous and relatively intact forest expanses. Ancient forests can simply not be acceptably industrially managed while still holding all their carbon.

Brazil, home to the world's largest rainforest, will ask rich nations to back a plan to help it slow deforestation at global climate talks this week, a senior environmental official said.

The plan marks a first step toward including deforestation in global climate agreements to cut emissions of carbon, a heat- trapping gas released by burning fossil fuels and trees that is partly to blame for rising world temperatures.

Officials from dozens of nations were to meet in Kenya starting Monday for the 12th round of UN global climate talks since 1992. The goal is to start crafting an extension to the Kyoto Protocol, a 1999 treaty that set mandatory targets for most rich nations to reduce carbon emissions.

The Brazilian secretary of forests and biodiversity, Joao Paulo Capobianco, said Brazil will present a plan for rich nations to put money into a fund that developing countries can tap after they prove they have slowed initial deforestation rates.

"A country will only have the right to claim resources after the environmental benefit is delivered," he said in an interview.

Critics have said Brazil just wants to get paid for protecting the Amazon, the world's largest rainforest and home to maybe a quarter of all species on earth.

Slowing deforestation was a cheap and fast way to lower global carbon emissions, nearly a fifth of which come from clearing land and burning trees, Capobianco said.

"When deforestation comes up, people in America, England, France, Italy, they take to the streets and protest because Brazil is cutting down the rainforest," Capobianco said. "The question isn't why would they invest money in this. The question is why wouldn't they?"

Under the Kyoto Protocol, Brazil cannot get credit for slowing deforestation although it burns relatively little oil and gas. A third of its carbon emissions come from felling trees in the Amazon.

In 2005, enough trees were cut down to cover all of Israel or Wales. To date, about a fifth of Brazil's Amazon has been cleared -- an area twice the size of Germany -- mostly to produce lumber, graze cattle or plant crops like rice and soy.

Capobianco said Brazil reduced land-clearing by a third last year and could do better if given credit for the carbon emissions avoided. More money would go to invest in new economic models for the rainforest, which makes poor farm land because of its sandy soil and frequent floods, he said.

"People don't cut down the Amazon because they're angry at trees," he said. "It's actually expensive and quite difficult. People do it because it's how they guarantee their economic survival."

Capobianco also said poor nations would gain by lowering carbon emissions more cheaply than they otherwise could.

Brazil's plan will need support from other developing nations, which were excused from Kyoto's mandatory carbon cuts so they could focus on economic growth and urgent problems like poverty and disease.

The United States, which is responsible for more than a third of the world's carbon emissions, backed out of the treaty saying it unfairly exempted countries like China and India from mandatory cuts.

Nach gut einjähriger Verhandlung ist im Irak das Urteil gegen den früheren Staats- und Regierungschef Saddam Hussein gefallen. Wegen Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit verurteilte ihn ein Sondertribunal am Sonntag zur Höchststrafe: Tod durch Erhängen. Das Urteil gegen Saddam ist noch nicht rechtskräftig. Die Menschenrechtsorganisation Amnesty International bezeichnete in einer in London veröffentlichten Erklärung den Prozess gegen Saddam Hussein als "fehlerbehaftet und unfair". Das Verfahren habe eigentlich dazu beitragen sollen, Justiz und Rechtsstaatlichkeit im Irak voranzubringen. Tatsächlich sei es jedoch eine "schäbige Angelegenheit" gewesen, welche die Fähigkeit des Tribunals in Frage stelle, nach internationalen Standards Recht zu sprechen.

Im nächsten Jahr wird Deutschland den Vorsitz der G8 und im ersten Halbjahr gleichzeitig die EU-Präsidentschaft innehaben. Gestern beriet die Bundesregierung über Ziele der Doppelpräsidentschaft und veröffentlichte eine Erklärung zur deutschen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft. Dazu erklärt Helmut Scholz, Mitglied des Parteivorstands der Linkspartei.PDS und des Vorstandes der Europäischen Linkspartei:

Die Doppelratspräsidentschaft Deutschlands im nächsten Jahr der EU und in der G8 ist nicht nur Chance sondern vor allem Verantwortung für die Bundesregierung und aller politischen Institutionen Deutschlands, einschließlich der im Bundestag vertretenen Parteien. Es gilt die Kräfte zu bündeln, um notwendige Veränderungen in Europa und darüber hinaus koordiniert und ambitioniert in Angriff zu nehmen. Ich teile die in der Erklärung vorgenommene Positionierung, dass Deutschland seinen Platz in der Mitte Europas hat und die EU als Staatenverbund eine politische Union ist. Die vollmundigen Worte von Frau Merkel können jedoch nicht darüber hinweg täuschen, dass ein Kurswechsel in der Politik der Europäischen Union von der Bundesregierung offensichtlich nach wie vor nicht beabsichtigt wird. Für die Bundesregierung bleiben ein neoliberaler Politikansatz und einseitig an Profitraten der Unternehmen orientierte Vorgaben Hauptgesichtspunkt europäischer Politik. Gerade dies aber hat vor dem Hintergrund des real erlebten Alltags in Paris und Warschau, in Amsterdam und in Lissabon und fast überall in der EU zum Zweifeln der Menschen am Sinn europäischen Zusammengehens geführt: Europa wird durch das Agieren nationaler Eliten den in der EU lebenden Menschen immer ferner, uninteressanter und gegensätzlicher zu eigenen Lebensplanungen. Das war zu weiten Teilen der Hauptgrund für die Ablehnung des EUVerfassungsvertrages durch die Bürgerinnen und Bürger Frankreichs und der Niederlande und auch von den Parteien der Europäischen Linken, darunter der Linkspartei.PDS. Die Bundesregierung will dazu beitragen, neues Vertrauen in die europäischen Institutionen zu schaffen und die Zustimmung der Bürgerinnen und Bürger zur europäischen Integration wieder zu stärken. Doch dazu bedarf es eines anderen Vorgehens als gestern Abend vorgestellt. Wenn das europäische Projekt nicht endgültig verkommen soll als Gefeilsche zwischen Lobby-Gruppen und nationalen Eigeninteressen in einer globalisierten kapitalistischen Welt, brauchen wir in Europa mehr als vollmundige Reden und ein Weiter so wie bisher. Eine politische Union ist nicht möglich ohne Sozial-, Wirtschafts- und Umweltunion und umgekehrt. Und die Klammer für alles ist die direkte Beteiligungsmöglichkeit und -garantie der Bürgerinnen und Bürger an den Entscheidungen der europäischen Integration. Darunter ist ein wirkliches Europa nicht zu haben. Und das, Frau Merkel, ist die Meßlatte für die deutsche EU-Ratspräsidentschaft. Etwas Zeit zum Nachbessern Ihres Angebots bleibt noch: Die Linke und die europäische Öffentlichkeit werden sie daran messen.

A MOBILE phone mast will be erected just 200 yards from a Bolton school after councillors said their hands were tied by planning guidelines.

Governors at the 330-pupil Church Road Primary School had objected to the 45 ft high O2 mast proposed for the junction of Moss Bank Way and Captain's Clough Road in Smithills.

Objectors were concerned about possible health effects and also the impact on bats and owls found in the area. continued...

Residents also claimed the structure would be an eyesore.

Joesph Crook, vice-chairman of the Church Road school governors, told Bolton Council's planning and highways committee: "The radiation emitted could be dangerous for our children, who are aged between three and 12.

"We can't identify any possible advantage to them. The Stewart Report commissioned by the Government says masts should not be near to schools."

Cllr Roger Hayes also called for the application to be rejected, saying the mast appeared to be of "low importance to the network".

He said that while Government guidelines meant health grounds could not be used to justify refusing the plan, members should reject it because of the mast's visual impact.

But Cllr Laurie Williamson said the council would be likely to lose an appeal.

"The bottom line view of the Government is that there are no appreciable or definable health risks from masts," he said.

"If they can't put a mast here, where can they put it?"

Councillors voted 13-5 in favour of the mast, leaving Mr Crook "disturbed" by the decision.

"I have tested the reception on an O2 phone in the area and it seems fine," he said.

"We're very disappointed. Above all, we're thinking of our children."

O2 spokesman Tom Powell said the application had met guidelines on emissions and was accompanied by an International Commission on No-Ionizing Radiation Protection certificate.

Mr Powell said the mast was needed to boost network coverage in the area.

In two days we are hoping that at least enough seats will be gained in the House of Representatives so we can START to have some oversight and regain some control over what is supposed to be our democracy.

Ihre Fürsorge ist aller Ehren wert. Bitte gehen Sie jedoch leider davon aus, dass es in Deutschland noch keinen wirksamen Schutz vor Mobilfunkstrahlung gibt. Noch nicht. So wie es bei den Skandalen um Contergan und PCP/PCB Jahrzehnte dauerte, so wird es auch in unserem Land noch sehr lange dauern, bevor Vernunft und Einsicht Oberhand gewinnen. Natürlich gibt es teure Abschirmmöglichkeiten für Wohnräume, die allerdings vielfach als Placebo angesehen werden. Als sieben Meter neben unserem Wohnhaus eine Mobilfunkstation bei Nacht und Nebel aufgebaut wurde, haben wir für 1.500 Euro eine neutrale Messung der Strahlenbelastung ausführen lassen und danach beim zuständigen Landgericht auf Rückbau geklagt. Als der gegnerische Anwalt die neutrale Messung nicht nur infrage stellte sondern als blanken Unsinn bezeichnete, haben wir den von uns beauftragten "Strahlenexperten" um Gegendarstellung gebeten. Das Ergebnis war denkbar kläglich, da sich dieser "Experte" auch nach mehrfacher Aufforderung überhaupt nicht mehr meldete. Die Klage wurde abgewiesen, die Gesamtkosten betrugen zum Abschluß annähernd 5.000 Euro. Warum ich Ihnen das schreibe? Nach meiner Erfahrung tummeln sich im Mobilfunkspektrum zu viele Scharlatane, die besorgten Menschen Geld aus der Nase ziehen. Also Vorsicht!

Just to get you interested/annoyed the Orange spokes person said, "It is interesting that the residents believe if the mast is gone they will be free of radiation but this will not be the case. In fact, a 90- second phone call on a mobile is the equivalent in exposure terms to standing in front of a mast for a full 24 hours without moving.

"We are obviously sensitive to the fact that some people who live there have health problems, but there is no evidence to suggest the phone masts are in any way a cause of their various illnesses." Would like the Bristol Evening Post to be flooded with letters if possible (well 2 or 3 at least). It is only me who ever responds to such stories in the BEP so it would be great if a few of you could also write. I just don't get it !!

A mast near me that it proposed has a rating of 100 Watts of output power. What is the output power of a mobile phone ? Does anyone know ? I'm sure I read somewhere that its a few Watts, so its doesn't seem comparable....

Anyone know what Orange might be talking about here ?????

I've heard this one before too.

With a mast, the power output is high (100W) but you're tens of metres from it. With a phone, the power output is low (a few Watts), but you're only millimetres from it. The amount of energy you absorb is dependent on:

1. the power output

2. how far away you are

3. how long you are exposed So someone's done the maths and worked out you absorb the same energy in a 90 second call compared to 24 hours at some distance from a mast. I can believe this...

BUT

2 things to note.

Firstly, it's making a huge assumption about the mechanics of any harmful effect. Is harm simply dependent on the amount of energy absorbed? Perhaps prolonged exposure causes more damage than short bursts, in which case a mast on your roof would be more dangerous? Or perhaps it's the other way round - maybe we're immune below a certain threshold, above which damage starts being caused, in which case a mast would be less dangerous than a phone. Without identifying the actual mechanism, you simply can't say. So for Orange to imply the risks are the same is flawed logic. But it gets them a good soundbite...

Secondly, government guidelines clearly recommend children should only use mobile phones in an emergency. This means even a 90 second call is too much. If they're happy to admit that 24 hours near a mast is the same as 90 seconds on the phone, then there's a clear contradiction allowing masts on top of houses where children might live.

I'm writing in response to your article 'Radiation Risk on the Roof' (Evening Post, 4th Nov). I find it particularly arrogant of the Orange spokesperson to assert that 90 seconds on a mobile is equivalent to 24 hours in front of a mast. She's clearly not up to speed on research showing that the body's recovery processes which restore balance to one's system quite quickly after such a short call have absolutely NO chance of maintaining such balance under a 24-hour exposure, even at far lower signal strength - there's just no respite for those in the radiation field of a mast 24/7. She also shouldn't be making such wild claims without acquainting herself with replicated research findings showing significant reduction in melatonin production - essential for both sleep regulation and as an anti-cancer agent - for those exposed to such emissions for extended periods at night, as people living near to a mast are. It's no coincidence that both sleep disorders and incidence of a variety of cancers are significantly higher in the vicinity of masts according to a number of studies.

Those conversant with the weight of evidence showing health risks from mast emissions can only give a hollow laugh at the 'reassurance' that the NRPB are monitoring the situation - remember the confident claims of government departments over BSE? As for the BMA claim that there's evidence that they're perfectly safe, that just doesn't make sense. The only evidence possible from research studies is on whether or not specific effects have been observed to a significant degree - to be 'perfectly safe', EVERY possible effects would have to have been tested for, a logical impossibility.

On the contrary, the EU-funded 'Reflex' study, conducted over a period of more than four years by twelve partner institutions from seven countries, concluded that in respect of radiation as emitted from both phones and masts "... there exists no justification any more to claim, that we are not aware of any pathophysiological mechanisms which could be the basis for the development of functional disturbances and any kind of chronic diseases in animal and man." In other words the claim that there's no way that this type of radiation could cause illness no longer holds water. This followed results replicated by a number of the partner institutions showing single and double-strand DNA breaks of the sort that lead to cancer at levels of radiation within our government's 'safety guidelines'.

Come off it Vodafone and Orange. The future may be bright for mobile phone operators under the government's 'Fire away, that's OK' policy, but the cancer clusters in the main beams of masts across the world speak far more eloquently than any ill-informed vested-interest spokesperson for those who gain big bucks while others suffer.

Your article of 4th November 2006, “Radiation on the Roof”, moved me so much that I felt compelled to write despite the fact that I am trying to recover after an enforced move from my home where TETRA, 2G and 3G emissions penetrate most areas of my flat and made me quite unwell.

Berkley House is yet another example of the increasing clusters of ill-health across the UK attributed to all technologies using pulsed microwave radiation which includes mobile phone masts, TETRA etc

As the founder member of Mast Sickness UK, I know of many such sites with masts on the roofs of residential flats, offices, industrial units, hospitals, schools and churches. There are also clusters of antennae on sports grounds and in residential areas across the UK. All those I have heard of are also associated with clusters of ill- health, many with higher than average cancer rates which are regarded by authorities as anecdotal evidence.

The scientific proof of harm has been presented to various bodies countless times but it remains discredited or ignored by those with the power to change things, yet the incidents of “anecdotal evidence” keep rising at an alarming rate.

I speak to many people who are unwell around this technology and they have worked out by trial and error over a period of time what is actually making them ill, many after undergoing various medical tests. None wished to blame this new technology which liberates us and gives us so much pleasure but many now have to avoid it, if they can, and cannot use it! There is a growing number of people who have become sensitive to pulsed microwave radiation, just as some are sensitive to electrical frequencies, or others to chemicals, pollen etc.

The wisps of this man-made smog are now becoming a multi –layered blanket of pollution of a new kind that we cannot see and only those who are sensitive to it can feel. Where there is smoke we should look for the fire before it becomes an unquenchable inferno.

All these poor people in Berkeley House, or any others affected, can do is to seek some form of protection or ask their MP to lobby the Government about this growing problem.

I can advise on where protection can be obtained or help in other simple ways.

Die Beseitigung des Kündigungsschutzes beseitigt nicht die Arbeitslosigkeit, sondern Arbeitsplätze. Die höhere Flexibilität des Beschäftigungssystems führt lediglich zu einem schnelleren Wechsel zwischen Beschäftigung und Entlassung, nicht aber zu mehr Arbeitsplätzen. Wer das nach dänischem Vorbild will, muss aber auch dänische Verhältnisse schaffen. Die arbeitslosen Dänen finden im System des Heuerns und Feuerns nicht nur schneller neue Arbeit, sie bekommen auch ein Arbeitslosengeld, das bis zu 70 Prozent des letzten Nettoentgelts ausmacht.
