Tell the Security Council: No Military Options on Iran

Dear Everybody,

As the meeting of the UN security Council on Iran looms, the possibility of military action against Iran is being talked about more and more. Military action against Iran would achieve precisely the oppposite of what we would like to achieve.

So called 'surgical strikes' against Iran, whether done by the US or Israel, would convert a currently ambiguous and indeed suspicious, program, into an umambiguously nuclear - weapons- oriented program and would result in Iran sparing no effort to acquire nuclear arms.

Military strikes against Iran would not only be completely ineffective and counterproductive as far as preventing the emergence of a nuclear - armed Iran, but would set the entire middle east afire.

A full- scale invasion of Iran would be in all probability completely impossible, and would be a catastrophe for relationships with the middle - east.

Unfortunately these options are being increasingly spoken of by both Israel and the US administration.

Iran currently has no nuclear weapons. Israel has somewhere between 200 and 400 warheads, Pakistan has around 75, and India over 100. The Security Council is meeting now or very soon to consider the case of Iran.

Please write to your Security Council representative, urging a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis, based on:

1) A nuclear - free middle -east

2) No use of or threats of, military action. Also urge your Security Council representative to facilitate the discussion of the Iran problem by the whole of the UN General Assembly as envisaged in the IAEA charter.

Dear Mr Downer,

In recent months there have been increasing rumours of military action and preparations for military action, against Iran.

I am writing to convey my extreme concern over this possibility,and that the Australian government may be drawn into this.

Australia should in to way support or encourage any use or any threat of use of any military option with respect to Iran and must visibly do its utmost to discourage our great and powerful ally from any such course of action.

Limited, so called 'surgical' military strikes against Iran can be gauranteed to produce exactly the opposite result to that desired.

So - called 'surgical' strikes will transform a nuclear program that is ambiguous into an unambiguously military program designed to obtain nuclear weapons at any cost, and will accellerate rather than prevent, Iran developing nuclear weapons. Even talk of military action inevitably pushes the Iranian government toward the nuclear weapons option that we say we do not want them to take.

An invasion of Iran will be a catastrophe. Occupation and pacification of Iran will prove impossible and lead to never-ending war in which there cannot be a victory. Even an attempt to occupy Iran's oil-rich western province will only be successful in provoking an all out war against the occupying forces.

There are even reports in some quarters that the use of nuclear weapons may be contemplated. These rumours/threats must be stopped immediately, and Australia must be visible in calling for them to stop. Australia must make it clear that this possibility, however remote, is absolutely unacceptable and would place the US outside the community of civilised countries.

The Australian government must do all that is in its power including in the leadup to the meeting of the UN Security Council, to press this message as strongly as possible. Australia should lobby both its ally and the Security Council itself to ensure that military options and talk and planning for military options are entirely excluded.

_Australian peace groups have urged the Australian government to use its influence to secure a peaceful settlement to the Iranian nuclear dispute, based on a nuclear-free Middle -East. There are no realistic military options. Recent moves to sell uranium to India, with up to
150 nuclear weapons indicates an 'upside-down' standard. Instead of simply referring the Iran case to the Security Council, there is a case for referring it to the far more representative General Assembly as provided for under the IAEA statute.

According to Friends of the Earth, People for Nuclear Disarmament W.A., PND-NSW, and the Australian Peace Committee, "What Australia should be doing instead of talking about selling uranium to a state that in 2003, threatened nuclear war with its nuclear-armed neighbour, is using our very real diplomatic influence to take down the temperature on the Iran nuclear weapons issue, as Mr El Baradei has repeatedly called for."

"The facts are that Iran currently has no nuclear warheads. In spite of all the accusations, it insists that it has no plans to acquire any. The recent IAEA report, though it has uncovered much that needs clarification, has no 'smoking gun' in it, and nothing that looks remotely like one. The ambiguous Iranian nuclear program remains just that - ambiguous. Both Israel and now India are known to have substantial nuclear arsenals. Yet we don't mention the Israeli arsenal, and we talk of selling uranium to India. This is not so much a double-standard as an 'upside-down' standard."

"Military action against Iran, from whatever point of view you look at it, could only be a catastrophe for the Middle-East and for the world. Nothing is more certain to convert the ambiguous Iranian nuclear program into an unambiguous nuclear weapons program, than either military action or continued threats of military action. Still worse are the continued rumours of possible use of nuclear weapons against Iran. Let us pray they remain just rumours."

Friends of the Earth has coordinated a global Appeal from Parliamentarians and Civil Society signed by over 200 NGOs and parliamentarians, on Iran in Febuary calling for a peaceful solution to the nuclear crisis and for a nuclear- free Middle - East, which has been faxed twice to the Security Council.

Sehr geehrter Herr Minister Seehofer,

Agro-Gentechnik und Mobilfunksenderstrahlung haben Gemeinsamkeiten. Sie führen beide zu Gesundheitsschäden und bei der Einführung der Agro-Gentechnik verwendet man das schon beim Mobilfunk bewährte Rezept.

Fangen wir doch beim Mobilfunk an. Die Höhe der Grenzwerte wurde von der ICNIRP, einem in München eingetragenen Verein, vorgeschlagen und dann von der Bundesregierung 1997 genehmigt. Bei der Festlegung der millionenfach überhöhten Grenzwerte wurde nur die harmlose Wärmestrahlung und nicht die biologisch (athermischen) Wirkungen der gepulsten Mobilfunksenderstrahlung berücksichtigt! Ingenieure, Nachrichtentechniker, Biologen und Physiker haben - im Gegensatz zu Ärzten - eben nicht die nötige Fachkompetenz, um die Auswirkungen auf die menschliche Gesundheit zu erkennen und zu beurteilen! Noch dazu sind die Grenzwerte von neuen seriösen Studien völlig unberührt und daher ungeeignet den erforderlichen Schutz der Gesundheit zu garantieren. Viele Krankheiten in der Nähe von Mobilfunksendern sind das traurige Ergebnis. Von Schlaflosigkeit bis Krebs und sogar Leukämie bei Kindern ist alles vertreten.

Die Politiker und die Industrie wollen bei der Agro-Gentechnik die gleiche Taktik wie bei der Einführung des Mobilfunks verfolgen (Gesundheitsgefahren verschweigen, tricksen und die Bevölkerung täuschen).

Gründe gegen die Agro-Gentechnik:

1. Die Einführung von Genmais ist in Deutschland nicht erforderlich, da der Maiszünsler bei uns kein Problem darstellt, wenn die Felder nach der Ernte tief umgeackert werden!

2. Nach der Einführung der Agro-Gentechnik ist keine genfreie Landwirtschaft mehr möglich (einmal Genpflanzen immer Genpflanzen)!

3. 80 Prozent der Verbraucher wollen kein Genjunkfood! Da genügend gentechnikfreie Lebensmittel auf dem Weltmarkt vorhanden sind ist - nach Einführung der Agro-Gentechnik - der biologische Landbau tot und die konventionelle Landwirtschaft schwer geschädigt. Aus den genannten Gründen muss die Bundesregierung das Gentechnikgesetz verschärfen statt zu lockern! Die Haftungsvorschriften dürfen nicht verwässert werden! Terminator-Technologie, d.h. Saatgut, das durch gentechnische Manipulationen nicht mehr in der Lage ist, keimfähige Samen zu bilden, muss verboten werden. Durch dieses Saatgut würde die Existenz von über 1,4 Milliarden Menschen bedroht, die auf selbst erzeugtes Saatgut angewiesen sind.

4. Die Zeitung "Le Monde" meldete im Frühjahr 2004, dass sich bei Fütterungsversuchen mit der Genmaissorte MON 863 bei Ratten Veränderungen im Blutbild und Nierenschäden zeigten! Sollen die schon durch Mobilfunksenderstrahlung erkrankten Menschen auch noch durch Genjunkfood geschädigt werden??

5. Mit der Verbreitung der Agro-Gentechnik würde Deutschland - wie z.Z. der Irak - abhängig von Amerika und dessen Gensaatkonzernen.

Abschließend möchte ich noch ein Zitat von Jean Ziegler (Sonderberichterstatter der Vereinten Nationen für das Recht auf Nahrung) aus seinem Buch: "Das Imperium der Schande", Seite 30, bringen: "Die Kosmokraten verabscheuen insbesondere die Kostenlosigkeit, die die Natur ermöglicht. Sie sehen darin eine unlautere und unerträgliche Konkurrenz. Die Patentierung des Lebendigen, der genetisch veränderten Pflanzen und Tiere, sowie die Privatisierung der Wasserquellen sollen dieser unzulässigen Kostenlosigkeit ein Ende bereiten".

Sie haben Recht, doch mir fällt da noch so einiges Gewichtige ein:

Genveränderte Organismen auszubringen, bedeutet erstmalig einen Umweltverschmutzung -verseuchung, die sich selbstständig vermehrt, und nie mehr rückholbar sein wird.

Die neuste Produkte dieser Firmen sind die "Selbstmordpflanzen", soll heißen, sie haben ein "Terminator" Gen eingebaut bekommen, das die normale Vermehrung verhindert, wie Sie richtig schreiben. Nun, was wird wohl passieren, wenn sich diese Eigenschaft auskreuzt? Dies ist wesentlich drastischer als das nur "finanzielle" Engagement der Konzerne bzgl. Saatgutverkauf.

Wenn nicht mehr nur die Nutzpflanzen, sondern auch die natürliche Vermehrung bei den Wildpflanzen damit beendet wird? Wenn es die Schranken zwischen Pflanze und Tier überschreitet, oder in die für uns existenziellen Mikroorganismen im Verdauungstrakt "einkreuzen", rein hypothetisch.

Über der "Mobilität" der Gene wissen wir inzwischen vieles.

Weiter brauchen wir nur die Probleme in z.B. Indien betrachten, und nachvollziehen, wie es dort den Landwirten erging, Gensaatgut teuer erstanden, dann schlecht bis miserable Ernteergebnisse und somit das Anfang einer Verschuldungsfalle, was bisher zu tausenden von Selbstmorden unter den Landwirten führte.

Und die Firma mit M. macht rigoros so weiter und belügt eine Regierung nach der anderen. Und bei uns stecken sie sowieso dick im Geschäft.

Wir alle (zumindest viele) essen ja diese Produkte seit per EU vieles "harmonisiert" und gelockert wurde, das beginnt bei den Emulgatoren aus Soja (vom Schokoriegel bis ...), Nestle und seine Produkte, und die vielen "Fertigsachen", die ja der große Teil des Volkes regelmäßig verspeisen.

Biodiversitätskonvention: Moratorium für "Terminator-Technologie" könnte aufgeweicht werden (20.03.06)

Nach Angaben des globalisierungskritischen Netzwerks Attac wird auf der Vertragsstaatenkonferenz der UN-Biodiversitätskonvention, die am Montag in Brasilien begann, das Moratorium zur so genannten Terminator-Technologie in Frage gestellt. Sinn der Terminator-Technologie sei es, Pflanzen zu produzieren, deren Samen nicht mehr keimfähig seien, "so dass die Bauern gezwungen sind, jedes Jahr aufs Neue bei den Saatgutkonzernen einzukaufen, während heute 80 Prozent des Saatguts von den Bauern selbst erzeugt wird". Die Terminator-Technologie nehme Bauern insofern das Recht zur Selbstversorgung mit Saatgut. Die Regierungen Kanadas, Neuseelands und Australiens fordern laut Attac "eine Aufweichung des bisherigen Moratoriums durch die Einführung einer Einzelfallregelung". Ein Kampagnenbündnis aus Deutschland fordert hingegen eine Aufrechterhaltung des Moratoriums und setzt sich für ein weltweites, dauerhaftes Verbot ein.

Critics say Freedom of Information Act needs reform As federal law turns 40 this year, federal agencies seem increasingly reluctant to make their records public.

WASHINGTON -- As a young graduate student studying international relations, William Aceves decided to take advantage of a law that gives citizens greater access to federal government records.

Seventeen years later, Aceves is still waiting for the records he sought under the Freedom of Information Act about a defense program that monitors international waterways.

Aceves, now 41 and a professor at California Western School of Law in San Diego, has received periodic bursts of information over the years but nothing comprehensive. The most recent batch of documents arrived in June with nearly a quarter of the 50 pages blacked out.

"It certainly is troubling that it has taken government agencies so long to comply," Aceves said. "Is it really accurate to call it the Freedom of Information Act if it takes more than a decade to disseminate?"

As the Freedom of Information Act turns 40 this year, federal agencies today seem just as reluctant to turn over information as they were when President Lyndon Johnson grudgingly signed the legislation on July 4, 1966.

The Freedom of Information Act established a legal right of access to government records and information. The law includes nine statutory exemptions for things like private medical records or information affecting national security. It also exempts the White House, Congress and federal courts from scrutiny. The Justice Department, which oversees the act, says it is working.

But the law, known as FOIA, is plagued by chronic backlogs, unjustified rejections and inconsistent responses, according to interviews with open government advocates and lawmakers and a new study by the National Security Archive, an independent research institute at George Washington University.

In a report to be published today, the National Security Archive conducted an audit of how well federal agencies process FOIA requests. The findings show that agencies have "significant backlogs and continue to fail at accurately identifying their pending FOIA requests." Some requests are processed within the time limit, but others are left to languish for years.

"What is missing in Washington is an awareness of the government's responsibility to inform the public," Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas said.

Cornyn introduced legislation last year with Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., to strengthen the act in part by creating an FOIA ombudsman, establishing a hot line for complaints and imposing consequences for failing to release information in a timely manner.

So far, the Cornyn-Leahy proposal has failed to gain traction in either chamber of Congress.

"We've been treated more or less like running into a buzz saw here in Washington because it is so contrary to the current culture," Cornyn said. "I do think it's going to require cultural change to one of openness rather than let's hide the ball."

Cornyn and Leahy's legislation lost momentum in part because President Bush issued an executive order in December that directed agencies to designate a senior public official -- at the assistant secretary level -- to preside over FOIA requests and come up with a plan to hasten the release of records and reduce chronic backlogs.

Critics say Bush's order doesn't go as far as the Cornyn-Leahy measure, but it prompted lawmakers ambivalent about the legislation to question why they needed to amend the act if the president's order is intended to do the same thing. In interviews, Cornyn and Leahy said the president's order is a first step, but they plan to keep pushing their legislation.

"The president's executive order is not everything that I wanted, nor is it what I still want," Cornyn said.

Jump in requests

Federal agencies received more than 4 million requests for information in the fiscal year 2004. That is a 71 percent increase from 2002, according to a study by the Government Accountability Office on the legislation's effectiveness. Agencies reported that they fully responded to 92 percent of the requests they received in 2004. About half of all FOIA requests are from individuals seeking information about veterans records or Social Security benefits.

The public is more interested than ever in asserting its right to know, said Daniel Metcalfe, director of the Justice Department's Office of Information and Privacy.

"You don't wonder why we have had a Freedom of Information Act for 40 years; you wonder how we got along without it for nearly 200 years," Metcalfe said. "It is so important toward fulfilling the promise of democracy in a citizen-participating government."

But critics assert that the use of the statutory exemptions is on the rise and has resulted in more "partial denials." They say less information is being released than before. The GAO report confirms that backlogs are a problem, finding that the number of pending requests carried from year to year has increased 14 percent since 2002.

Metcalfe points out that some government information has greater sensitivity today than it did before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Top Democrats worry that the act is diminishing in value at a time when the federal government's penchant for secrecy is rising. In the past three months, the public has learned that the president authorized the National Security Agency to secretly eavesdrop on telephone calls of suspected terrorists four years ago without obtaining a warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, as required by law. In addition, government intelligence officials engaged in a secret reclassification program to remove 55,000 pages of historical documents from the open shelves of the National Archives.

"The Freedom of Information Act needs to be strengthened because it cannot stand up to an administration that wants to aggressively hide its mistakes," Leahy said.

Success stories

A major reason cited for the act's decline is the lack of consequences for public officials who flout the law. No penalties are assessed if a public official fails to comply within 20 working days after receiving a request. Citizens may appeal, but ultimately they have little recourse other than to sue.

"There is no cop on the beat," said Rick Blum, executive director of OpenTheGovern- ment.org, an umbrella organization of liberal and conservative groups concerned about government secrecy. "In Washington, it is easy to get away with denying and delaying until a request dies."

Taking the federal government to court has resulted in a recent string of successes for the media and other advocates of open government.

For example, as a result of The Associated Press filing an FOIA lawsuit, a federal judge this month ordered the Pentagon to release the identities of suspected terrorists being held at the military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

And the American Civil Liberties Union pried loose a series of photographs of inmate abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and obtained documents about aggressive tactics used to extract information from detainees at Guantánamo Bay.

But taking federal agencies to court is expensive and out of reach for most citizens.

The Freedom of Information Act may be plagued by official stubbornness and chronic backlogs, but it remains an indispensable tool in an era of unprecedented government secrecy, said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the American Federation of Scientists in Washington.

"FOIA is one of the most vital tools we have left, and it's urgent that it be protected," Aftergood said. "It's under stress in this climate, but it's not broken."

Researchers have uncovered compelling evidence that indicates Earth's most vulnerable regions - the North and South Poles - are poised on the brink of a climatic disaster.

The scientists, at an atmospheric monitoring station in the Norwegian territory of Svalbard, have found that levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere near the North Pole are now rising at an unprecedented pace.

In 1990 this key cause of global warming was rising at a rate of 1 part per million (ppm). Recently, that rate reached 2 ppm per year. Now, scientists at the Mount Zeppelin monitoring station have discovered it is rising at between 2.5 and 3 ppm.

'The fact that our data now show acceleration in the rise of carbon dioxide level is really a source for concern,' said Professor Johan Strom, of Stockholm University's department of applied environmental science, which runs the Mount Zeppelin station. 'The increase is also seen at other stations, but our Zeppelin data show the strongest increase'...

A mobile phone giant could be ordered to switch off a controversial communications mast after backing down in the latest leg of a "David and Goliath" battle.

O2 was set to go head-to-head with Matthew Pennington and his four-year-old son Henry in the High Court in London next month over the mast on North Walsham police station.

The father and son, who live 100 yards from the police station, are taking on the phone firm because of fears about the impact of radiation from the mast on people's health.

But, with solicitors putting the final touches to their cases, O2 has effectively conceded defeat and invited judges to rule in the father and son's favour - as has the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).

Now the critical test case is set to go to a new, make or break, planning appeal, more than a year after an inspector appointed by the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, gave the go-ahead to the equipment.

And officers at North Norfolk District Council, which threw out the application before the inspector overturned the decision, could now demand that O2 switches off the mast until the appeal is concluded.

Mr Pennington, who has moved his family to rented accommodation in Trunch, near North Walsham, because of his worries about the mast, was unavailable for comment last night.

But, speaking on Friday, before O2 withdrew from the case, he said: "This Tetra system uses new microwave technology which has never been tested properly. It could be dangerous. There has been lots of concern from people in the area."

The saga began in 2003, when residents complained of nosebleeds, headaches, dizziness, skin rashes and lack of sleep when O2 switched on the Tetra technology, which is used to power the police's radio system.

North Norfolk councillors then rejected a planning application for the equipment, which was an extension to an existing mast. The application had been submitted after it went live.

The council also launched enforcement action to switch it off.

The refusal and the enforcement notice were taken to appeal by O2, and a planning inspector ruled in the phone firm's favour.

Mr Pennington then launched legal action in his son's name, claiming the inspector had not taken into account the evidence of ill health that he said had been caused by the mast.

He also said O2 had not produced sufficient evidence that it had looked for alternative sites for the mast.

Court procedure meant the case was officially brought against O2, the ODPM and district council. But, having turned down the application, North Norfolk did not contest it.

And the ODPM also decided not to pursue it, conceding that there had been a "breach of procedural fairness" towards the Penningtons.

On Friday, O2 wrote to say it was also "submitting to judgment" - legal jargon for conceding defeat.

Roger Howe, planning legal enforcement manager at North Norfolk, said: "This all means that the appeals will go back to the Secretary of State, who will appoint a different inspector.

"The mast was switched on when the inspector ruled in O2's favour. But we may take legal advice, because I think the stop notice now kicks in again.

"My view is that it becomes effective, and the mast should be switched off."

Der Streik im öffentlichen Dienst der Kommunen Baden-Württembergs ist heute in die sechste Woche gegangen. Dazu erklärt Harald Werner, gewerkschaftspolitischer Sprecher der Linkspartei.PDS:

Das Scheitern der Tarifverhandlungen im Öffentlichen Dienst offenbart auf der Seite der Länder mehr als nur eine starre Verhandlungsführung. Alle Anzeichen deuten darauf hin, dass die von der Union geführten Landesregierungen auf eine historische Niederlage der Gewerkschaften hinarbeiten, die entweder zur Zerschlagung des Flächentarifvertrages oder sogar der Tarifautonomie führen soll. Wenn die Länder nur noch über die nachhaltige Verschlechterung des Tarifvertrages verhandeln wollen, ist das ein bedenklicher Angriff auf den Sozialstaat. Wenn sie aber den Verzicht ohne jegliche Abstriche diktieren möchten, ist das ein Rückfall ins 19. Jahrhundert. Man sollte sich daran erinnern, dass die Verzichtsforderung von Politikern erhoben wird, die den Staat seit Jahren durch Steuersenkungsprogramme verarmen lassen und bei der Privatisierung öffentlicher Betriebe Hunderttausende Arbeitsplätze vernichteten. Hier gibt es keinen Unterschied zwischen den herrschenden Parteien, aber die von der Union geführten Länder wollen offenbar ein Exempel statuieren und die tariflichen Vereinbarungen künftig durch Diktate ersetzen.

IST DIE VOGELGRIPPE EIN PAPIERTIGER?

Wenn sich das Vogelgrippe-Virus und das menschliche Grippe-Virus bei einer Doppel-Infektion im Menschen begegnen und ihre genetischen Informationen austauschen, wird daraus unweigerlich eine weltweite Epidemie mit vielen Millionen Toten entstehen und nur neue, erst noch unter Milliardenaufwand zu entwickelnde Pharmaprodukte könnten uns retten. So erzählen uns zumindest die Politiker, Gesundheitsbehörden und Mikrobiologen. Doch für diese Hypothese gibt es keinerlei nachvollziehbare Beweise. von Hans U. P. Übertragung durch Wildvögel

Verschiedene Experten beteuern öffentlich, dass die Übertragungswege des Vogelgrippevirus nicht geklärt, eine Übertragung durch Wildvögel sogar eher unwahrscheinlich sei. Zudem sei die Sterberate der Wildvögel für diese Jahreszeit nicht ungewöhnlich. Sind also die immer extremeren Maßnahmen der Behörden reiner Aktionismus?

Warum Rügen?

Das "Friedrich-Löffler-Institut" (FLI), eine Bundesbehörde, experimentiert seit letztem Sommer nur wenige Kilometer von Rügen entfernt mit H5N1-Viren, um einen neuartigen Impfstoff zu entwickeln. Das Institut liegt mitten in einem Naturschutzgebiet. Merkwürdigerweise wird die Möglichkeit eines Entweichens von H5N1-Viren aus den FLI-Labors weder von unseren Politikern noch in den Medien thematisiert.

Einseitige Diagnosen

Die Symptome der Vogelgrippe können laut FLI-Webseite durch 7 verschiedene Mikroben oder durch Vergiftungen hervorgerufen werden. Bestätigt sich der Ausgangsverdacht, wird jedoch in der Regel nicht weiter gesucht. Mögliche Ursachen wie falsche Haltung der Tiere oder Vergiftung fallen somit von vornherein unter den Tisch. Wird eine der 7 Mikroben, darunter H5N1, gefunden, gilt für die Mikrobiologen die Ursache als geklärt. Ein weiteres Problem der Diagnose ist die Aussagekraft der Virentests. Verschiedenen Autoren zufolge scheint es keinen Nachweis dafür zu geben, dass diese Testsysteme anhand des gereinigten Vogelgrippevirus geeicht wurden. Dadurch ist nicht auszuschließen, dass die Tests z.B. auch auf Zelltrümmer oder andere Mikropartikel reagieren oder einfach nur ein allgemeiner Hinweis für Stress sind.

Das Tabu der Massentierhaltung

Von der einseitigen Diagnosepraxis profitiert in erster Linie die Massentierhaltung. Laut FLI breitet sich das Virus gerade hier "explosionsartig" aus. Im Grunde ist das kein Wunder, bedenkt man die unnatürliche Enge, den fehlenden Auslauf, fehlendes Tageslicht, einseitige Ernährung und häufige Vergabe von Hormonen, Medikamenten und Impfungen. Auch die Problematik der Massentierhaltung wird merkwürdigerweise im Zusammenhang mit der Vogelgrippe so gut wie nicht thematisiert.

Fragwürdige Medikamente und Impfstoffe

Sowohl für den Nutzen der antiviralen Medikamente, die derzeit von den reichen Ländern gehortet werden, als auch Impfstoffe gegen Influenzaviren (zu denen auch das H5N1-Virus gehört) gibt es keine belastbaren Beweise. Im Gegenteil: Im Zusammenhang mit einer Tamiflu-Einnahme wurden mehrere Dutzend Todesfälle bekannt und der Nutzen der Impfstoffe wird ausschließlich anhand des sog. Antikörpertiters gemessen und nicht am Nachweis einer tatsächlichen Nichterkrankung.

Übertreibungen bereits bei der "normalen" Virusgrippe

Die angeblich bis zu 30.000 Todesfälle jährlich, die laut den Behörden auf das Influenzavirus zurückzuführen sind, sind reine Schätzungen, die auf einem Meldesystem basieren, das von Impfstoffherstellern finanziert wird. Sie liegen etwa um das Tausendfache über den Zahlen des statistischen Bundesamtes.

Das Rätsel der Spanischen Grippe

Die Spanische Grippe, eine weltweite Epidemie, die 1918 bis zu 100 Millionen Todesopfer gefordert haben soll, wird als eines der Hauptargumente dafür angeführt, dass jederzeit die Entstehung eines neuen Supervirus möglich ist, wenn sich Vogelgrippevirus und menschliches Grippevirus begegnen sollten. Die Spanische Grippe war jedoch nicht ansteckend, die Symptome eher untypisch (innere Blutungen der Lunge) und wurde von zeitgenössischen Kritikern als Folge von Massenimpfungen vor allem gegen Pocken und Typhus angesehen. Auch für einen Zusammenhang der damaligen verschiedenen lokalen Krankheitswellen gibt es keine Beweise.

Interessenskonflikte

Die weltweite Panikmache entwickelt derzeit eine Eigendynamik, die vor allem von Eigeninteressen getragen wird. Da sind Politiker, die sich profilieren wollen, Institutsleiter, die auf Aufstockung ihres Forschungsbudgets hoffen, Konzerne, die Hühnerfleischfabriken betreiben und antivirale Medikamente oder Impfstoffe entweder bereits herstellen oder gerade entwickeln. Und da ist z.B. ein US- Verteidigungsminister Rumsfeld als Mehrheitsaktionär beim Tamiflu-Lizenzgeber Gilead....

Mein persönliches Fazit:

Es deutet alles darauf hin, dass es sich bei der Vogelgrippe tatsächlich um einen Papiertiger handelt.

Zunehmend unübersehbar machen sich die Folgen der Klimawende bemerkbar. Die durch die Klimaerwärmung ansteigende Luftfeuchtigkeit beschert Rekordmengen an Schnee, Regen, Hochwasser und Unwetter. Freuen können sich die Verursacher: die Ölkonzerne und Energiemonopole über die Entwicklung.

Nutznießer der Klimawende sind in erster Linie ihre Verursacher, die sch gleichzeitig mit allen Mitteln gegen eine Kursänderung der Energiepolitik stemmen.

Der mittlerweile nicht nur errechnete sondern anhand von Messreihen belegte Rückgang des Golfstroms wird mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit zukünftig Mitteleuropa in einen Kühlschrank verwandeln, da die bisherige Beheizung durch die Meeresströmung nachlässt und in absehbarer Zeit ganz ausbleiben wird.

Im Hamburger Abendblatt zog ein Klimaforscher den Vergleich heran mit Zeiten, in denen ähnliche Temperaturen vorherrschten, wie sie nach dem Erliegen des Golfstroms zu erwarten sind: vor mehr als 100.000 Jahren reichten damals die skandinavischen Gletscher bis an die Elbe, das Klima wäre vergleichbar dem in der Heimat der Eskimo.

Dass die großen Ölkonzerne und Energiemonopole kein Problem mit einer solchen Perspektive haben, ist gut nachvollziehbar: sie erhalten damit die Möglichkeit, ihre Umsätze weiter in ungeahnte Höhen zu treiben: der dann immens gesteigerte Energieverbrauch für die Beheizung von Wohnräumen wird sie zu den Königen der Welt erheben, soweit sie diesen Status nicht schon heute eingenommen haben.

Unter den Koordinaten des neoliberalen Marktes ist es nicht nur als Option zu verstehen sondern als marktwirtschaftlicher Imperativ für die Führungen der Konzerne, die Klimaveränderung voranzutreiben: die vorteilhafte Ertragslage des jeweiligen Unternehmens genießt bekanntlichermaßen den Vorrang vor anderen Kriterien ihrer Entscheidung. Politiker, die sich ihnen hierbei in den Weg stellen könnten, werden von ihnen eingekauft, bevor ein solches Risiko entsteht: jeden Monat verlängert sich inzwischen die Liste derer in einem politischen Amt, von denen bekannt wird, dass sie ein Zusatzeinkommen eines Konzerns der Energiemonopole oder anderweitige Gratifikationen erhalten haben.

Aus dem Klimawandel ergeben sich weitere profitträchtige Vorteile, die sich bereits abzeichnen: zur Abhilfe des Problems wird bereits angeboten, das im Kraftwerksbetrieb entstehende CO2 zu verflüssigen und in der Erdkruste einzulagern. Dies Geschäft wird ggf. von denselben Konzernen übernommen, de bereits das Problem verursachten, und ermöglicht ihnen zusätzliche Umsätze und Gewinne.

Außerdem erfahren wir inzwischen verschiedentlich, dass mit dem fortschreitenden Abschmelzen des Polareises eine große Zahl von weiteren Rohstoffvorkommen zugänglich werden, die bisher unerreichbar waren.

Eine weitere umfangreiche Quelle für die profitable Erkundung und Ausbeutung von Ressourcen tut sich somit auf - durch die Zerstörung der Klimabalance. Und dass es die großen Energiemonopole sein werden, die in der ersten Reihe dieses Geschäftes stehen, ergibt sich schon daraus, dass sie es sind, die über das erforderliche Kapital, die Logistik und die personellen Ressourcen für solche Vorhaben verfügen.

Die Schweizer Mobilfunkanbieter rüsten ihre Antennen laufend auf. Betroffene Anwohner und Behörden wehren sich gegen die Strahlenbelastung. Der Innerrhoder Landammann Carlo Schmid scheut auch vor exotischen Massnahmen nicht zurück. Von Andreas Schmid

Die Methode ist ebenso unkonventionell wie umstritten. Mit gedrechselten Holzfiguren und wasserpfeifenähnlichen Plexiglaskörpern bekämpft der Ägypter Ibrahim Karim den Elektrosmog. «Biogeometrie» nennt der 64-jährige ETH-Architekt und Doktor der Wissenschaften seine Lehre. Die Glasformen werden auf Handyantennen und Sendeanlagen ausgerichtet und sollen so deren Strahlen neutralisieren. «Harmonisieren» nennt es Ibrahim Karim, der mit einem Versuch im sankt-gallischen Hemberg für die einen zum erlösenden Heilsbringer, für die anderen zum gaukelnden Scharlatan wurde.

Nachdem die Swisscom im Kirchturm der Toggenburger Gemeinde im Sommer 2002 eine Handyantenne installiert hatte, beklagten sich zahlreiche Anwohner über Schlafstörungen, Herzrhythmus- und Blutdruckprobleme. Durch persönliche Kontakte zu Karim und die Vermittlung der Ombudsstelle Mobilkommunikation kam 2003 ein biogeometrischer Versuch zustande. Die Swisscom bot Hand, obwohl Kritiker die Formenmethode als wissenschaftlichen Humbug verschrien.

Was die Hemberger Anwohner dann Monate später erzählten, polarisierte erst recht, weil es sich niemand erklären konnte: Die Geplagten schliefen wieder tief und fühlten sich wohl. Lange nicht mehr gesehene Tierarten seien zudem nach Hemberg zurückgekehrt. Die Swisscom kommentierte das Ergebnis des Versuchs nur bedingt erfreut. Der unerwartete Erfolg der Biogeometrie drängte das Unternehmen erst recht in die Rolle des Sündenbocks. «Am Mobilfunk alleine lagen die Beschwerden der Betroffenen nicht»; die Antenne habe lediglich eine ungünstige Konstellation akzentuiert, betonten die Verantwortlichen.

Was im Toggenburg half, wollten auch die Bewohner des Hirschbergs in Appenzell Innerrhoden. Schliesslich sind sie zugleich den Strahlen des Senders Säntis, den Immissionen militärischer Funkanlagen sowie Handyantennen ausgesetzt. Der Ombudsstelle schwebte ein biogeometrischer Versuch mit wissenschaftlicher Begleitung vor. Ein Unterfangen, das nach monatelangen Verhandlungen scheiterte. Die für Karim vorgesehenen Vertragspartner, die Forschungsstiftung Mobilkommunikation (FSM) der ETH Zürich sowie die Swisscom, scherten aus. «Das Projekt erfüllt unsere wissenschaftlichen Ansprüche nicht», begründet FSM-Geschäftsleiter Gregor Dürrenberger. Zu vieles sei zu unklar und offen geblieben, um aussagekräftige Ergebnisse zu erhalten. Für Dürrenberger gibt es keine naturwissenschaftliche Antwort auf die Frage, wie die biogeometrischen Interventionen wirksam sein könnten. Die Forscher wollten das gar nicht erfahren, entgegnet Karim. «Bewusst haben sie Unmögliches wie Doppelblindversuche bei Tieren verlangt.» Die Skepsis der FSM habe schliesslich auch die Swisscom zum Rückzug bewogen. Ein Politiker springt ein

Dennoch wurde der Versuch am Hirschberg Ende 2005 gestartet. Der Innerrhoder Landammann Carlo Schmid verhinderte einen Übungsabbruch. Immerhin forderten die Anwohner von der Kantonsregierung seit Jahren eine Linderung der Strahlenimmissionen. Ein Dienstleistungsvertrag regelt inzwischen die biogeometrische Partnerschaft zwischen Karim und dem Kanton Appenzell Innerrhoden offiziell, die Regierung hat dafür einen Kredit von 20 000 Franken gesprochen. Nicht weil Landammann Schmid - zugleich CVP-Ständerat und Präsident des Nutzfahrzeugverbands Astag - ein feuriger Anhänger unerklärbarer Lehren abseits des Bodenständigen wäre: «Die subjektive Belastung der Leute am Hirschberg war derart, dass wir nun quasi als Ultima Ratio auch eine Massnahme unterstützen, die man durchaus anzweifeln kann.» Die positive Bilanz in Hemberg hat Schmid animiert, das Projekt zu unterstützen. «Wir hätten den Versuch dann nicht fördern dürfen, wenn die Methode nachweislich den Gesetzen der Physik zuwiderlaufen würde.» Das sei aber bis heute nicht geschehen.

Hirschberg-Anwohner Josef Mazenauer will in der Nachbarschaft bereits erste positive Auswirkungen von Karims Tätigkeit festgestellt haben. Die Strahlenplagen - Kopfweh und Übelkeit zum Beispiel - seien bereits wesentlich zurückgegangen. In zehn Häusern hat Karim biogeometrische Formen sowie spezielle Matten und Teppiche gegen Erdstrahlen ausgelegt. Diese «Haussets» habe er vor Wintereinbruch als vorübergehende Lösung eingesetzt, sagt der Ägypter. Im Frühling will er dann ein flächendeckendes System für die ganze Umgebung installieren. Vorerst kümmert er sich jedoch um seine Geschäfte in der Heimat. Dort ist er als Berater von Ministern, in der Forschung und in den Medien ein gefragter Mann, bekannt geworden etwa durch biogeometrische Projekte im Obstbau und in der Geflügelzucht, die in der Vergangenheit für Furore gesorgt haben.

Noch viel mehr als auf Karims Rückkehr warten in der Schweiz die Fachleute, Behörden und Elektrosmog-Betroffenen auf die Resultate einer Studie der Forschungsstiftung Mobilkommunikation zur Strahlenbelastung durch Handyantennen. Rund zwei Dutzend Schweizer Gemeinden haben ein Moratorium für den Bau von UMTS-Anlagen verhängt, bis dass deren Einflüsse auf die Umgebung genau untersucht sind. Einst auf Ende 2005 in Aussicht gestellt, stehen die Ergebnisse der Studie weiterhin aus. Weil die aufwendige wissenschaftliche Prüfung durch ein Fachjournal noch nicht abgeschlossen sei, begründen die Verantwortlichen.

Die Verzögerung löst bei Antennen- Kritikern Unmut aus. Sie befürchten eine zwischenzeitliche Einflussnahme der Mobilfunkanbieter. Diese haben die 720 000 Franken teure Forschungsarbeit zu 40 Prozent finanziert. Dass die Industrie einen Beitrag zur Abklärung der offenen Fragen leistet, findet FSM-Geschäftsleiter Gregor Dürrenberger eher fair als problematisch: «Zumal die Geldgeber keinerlei Einfluss auf den Publikationsprozess haben.» Die FSM treffe alle Forschungsentscheide unabhängig von ihren Geldgebern. Indessen stellt der Strahlenmessexperte Peter Schlegel die ketzerische Frage, warum die Schädlichkeit überhaupt weiter erforscht werde. «Sie ist bereits evident durch die vielen durch Antennen verursachten Krankheiten», sagt der ETH-Ingenieur. Immer neue Sender

Die Mobilfunkanbieter Swisscom, Sunrise und Orange geben sich hinsichtlich allfälliger Folgen der FSM-Studie gelassen. Man warte gespannt ab, sagt Swisscom-Sprecher Jürg Studerus. Unbesehen der Resultate, so Michael Burkhardt von Sunrise, lasse sich bereits jetzt sagen, dass die Bedeutung der Studie überbewertet werde. «Insbesondere hat sich die politische Einschätzung weit von der wissenschaftlichen entfernt.» Orange-Sprecherin Therese Wenger glaubt nicht an einschneidende Konsequenzen und sähe sich von neuen, für die Anbieter ungünstigen Erkenntnissen überrascht.

Wenig bekümmert forcieren die Firmen weiterhin den Bau von leistungsfähigen UMTS-Anlagen, den Handyantennen der dritten Generation. Diese können wesentlich grössere Datenmengen übertragen als die früheren GSM-Antennen - und dies erst noch viel schneller. Swisscom-Sprecher Studerus hält aber fest, dass die international vergleichsweise strengen Immissionsgrenzwerte der Schweiz den gesundheitlichen Schutz der Bevölkerung stets garantierten: Die Anlagen müssen für jeden möglichen Betriebszustand die Vorschriften der Verordnung einhalten.

Den Einwohnerinnen und Einwohnern von Ebersecken (LU) und Bottenwil (AG) sind solche theoretischen Überlegungen einerlei. Sie leben ohne Angst vor den Strahlen von Handyantennen und ungestört durch Anrufe auf Mobiltelefone. Sie haben keinen Empfang. In der 800-Seelen-Gemeinde Bottenwil verhinderte bisher privater Widerstand den Bau einer Handyantenne, Ebersecken mit seinen 400 Einwohnern wurde von den Anbietern erst gar nicht als Standort in Erwägung gezogen. Der Frieden wird vorläufig andauern, eine Antennen-Anlage ist weiterhin nicht geplant.

CEBIT-Industrie setzt auf Funkchip, Verbraucherschützer besorgt

Hannover (Reuters) - RFID bei Kinderkleidung, Rindfleisch und Eintrittskarten - die Chips zur Datenübertragung per Funk halten immer stärker Einzug in den Alltag.

Die Radiofrequenz-Technologie (RFID), die die Speicherung detaillierter Produktinformationen, aber auch von Krankenakten auf kleinen Chips möglich macht, wird als die kommende Funktechnik gehandelt. Die Computermesse CeBIT in Hannover widmet RFID einen Schwerpunkt und 5.000 Quadratmeter Ausstellungsfläche.

Vor allem der Handel und der Logistiksektor versprechen sich von einer flächendeckenden Nutzung beträchtliche Kostensenkungen. Der Handelskonzern Metro beispielsweise gibt an, im vergangenen Jahr in seinem Testsupermarkt im nordrhein-westfälischen Rheinberg beim Wareneingang mit RFID-gekennzeichneten Produkten 8,5 Millionen Euro gespart zu haben. Und das Logistikunternehmen DHL erfasste bei der Test-Inventarisierung von Kleidungsstücken mit RFID-Chips über hundert Mal so viele Teile pro Stunde wie mit dem herkömmlichen Strichcode.

Auch der Pharmariese Pfizer nutzt die Sender, um sein Potenzmittel Viagra vor illegalen Nachahmern zu schützen. Pilotprojekte in verschiedenen Krankenhäusern sollen zeigen, ob Chips mit der Krankheitsgeschichte am Arm des Patienten den Betrieb entlasten und Fehler vermeiden. Auch in Skipässen, auf Blutkonserven und in Bibliotheksbüchern sind die kleinen Sender schon zu finden.

Noch wird RFID aber nicht großflächig eingesetzt, unter anderem wegen der hohen Kosten. "Heute liegt der Preis für einen Chip bei rund 14 Cent", erläutert der Geschäftsführer für Informationstechnologie bei der Metro, Gerd Wolfram, auf der CeBIT. "So lange ein Joghurt 40 Cents und der Chip 14 Cents kosten, wird das niemand machen." Für eine intensivere Nutzung rechneten Großanwender mit einem Preis von einem Cent pro Chip, sagte die Geschäftsführerin des Informationsforums RFID, Andrea Huber. In fünf bis zehn Jahren könnte es ihrer Einschätzung nach soweit sein. "Bis dahin werden die Chips nicht mehr aus Kupfer oder Silizium sein, sondern aus Kunststoff."

ANGST VOR DEM "GLÄSERNEN KUNDEN"

Doch je weiter die Verbreitung der bereits 1948 erfundenen Technologie zunimmt, desto mehr warnen Verbraucherschützer vor möglichen Verletzungen des Datenschutzes. Wegen der kabellosen Funktechnologie merkt beispielsweise der Supermarktkunde nicht, ob ein Produkt mit einem Chip besetzt ist und wann die Informationen ausgelesen werden. Der Standort eines Produktes kann weltweit verfolgt werden, und in Zusammenhang mit Kundeninformationen lässt sich damit Kaufverhalten nachvollziehen. Verbraucherschützer fordern deshalb umfangreiche Informationen über den Einsatz von RFID, wie zum Beispiel eine Kennzeichnung aller mit einem Chip ausgestatteten Produkte. Zudem soll es möglich sein, die Sender entweder vom Produkt zu entfernen oder sie zu deaktivieren.

Die Funkerkennungs-Technologie RFID wird nach Auffassung der EU-Kommission "schon bald" die Strichcodes im Supermarkt ersetzen und Unternehmen und der Gesellschaft "beachtliche Perspektiven" eröffnen. RFID steht für "Radio Frequency Identification Devices" und soll die Möglichkeit bieten, Informationen wie Standort, Identität und Vorgeschichte von Produkten zu erfassen. Die Technologie werfe jedoch nicht nur Fragen der technischen Interoperabilität und internationalen Kompatibilität auf, sondern habe auch zu ernsthaften datenschutzrechtlichen Bedenken geführt. Um solchen Bedenken Rechnung zu tragen hat die EU-Kommission am 9. März eine "Konsultation" der Öffentlichkeit eingeleitet, die auch eine Konferenz zum Thema RFID bei der Computermesse CeBit 2006 in Hannover einschließt.

ImpeachPAC Endorses Jeeni Criscenzo

This week ImpeachPAC endorsed its third pro-impeachment candidate for Congress, Jeeni Criscenzo, who is running unopposed in the Democratic primary to challenge Republican incumbent (and former car thief) Darrell Issa in California's 49th District.

Criscenzo has already been endorsed by the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, Progressive Democrats of San Diego, Democracy for America Meetup #23 (San Diego), and Progressive Democrats of America (national).

Criscenzo has been a leading opponent of the Iraq War since before the invasion. She organized the Bring Their Buddies Home vigils as a non-confrontational way of showing people the human cost of war.

Her campaign website makes clear her opposition to criminal policies of the Bush regime. She wrote a blog entry on March 6, advocating impeachment of Bush and Cheney. Criscenzo has also been campaigning lately wearing an "Impeach Bush" T-shirt.

An international research team that hitches a ride north through the Bering Sea every summer with the Canadian Coast Guard says a "major ecosystem shift'' has occurred in the frigid waters that act as gateway to the Arctic.

Gray whales, walruses and diving seabirds are being replaced by fish that are moving north as ice cover shrinks and waters warm, say the scientists who detail their findings in the journal Science today.

The change is so dramatic the researchers say it threatens both commercial fishing and the livelihood of people such as the Yupik hunters of St. Lawrence Island, near the entrance of Bering Strait, who are watching the ice thin and the seals and walrus disperse.

"It's much more dangerous for them to go out and hunt, it is not the same stable platform they are used to,'' says co-author Fiona McLaughlin of the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS) in Victoria.

McLaughlin and her colleagues have been monitoring everything from water temperature and salinity to the behaviour of gray whales, walruses and diving ducks such as spectacled eiders for almost two decades. What emerges from the mass of data is clear evidence, they say, of an ecosystem shift in the shallow and productive waters of the northern Bering Sea.

Creatures that live on the bottom and feed on the bottom, such as whales and sea birds, are giving way to fish that feed within the water column, the scientists say. They believe the change has been triggered by the shrinking of a huge pool of cold water in the Bering Sea where such fish as salmon and pollock can not survive.

"This is a big change,'' says Eddy Carmack, IOS oceanographer and co-author, who likens it to switching from tundra to a boreal forest. As the pool of icy 1 C water shrinks, the fish are not only moving into the northern Bering Sea but they are slipping into the Arctic, the researchers report. Pink salmon are now showing up in rivers that drain into the Arctic Ocean.

The scientists say warm-blooded mammals such as walruses and seals appear to be seeking out colder waters elsewhere. There is also evidence mother walruses are abandoning their pups as the ice thins.

The researchers say the change appears to be tied to climate change and global warming. But they stress the need for more monitoring to understand what is happening and to manage resources.

"Relying on records of past fisheries catches and atmospheric pressure patterns is simply not enough," says Carmack. "You have to go into the field and look."

The scientists travel north through the Bering Sea on the Canadian icebreaker, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier, which heads for the Arctic each summer. Twelve to 14 researchers from the U.S., Japan and Canada typically go along as part of what Carmack calls the "entrepreneurial'' project.

Asked if they are worried about the trends they are seeing McLaughlin says, "it certainly makes you stop and think."

Carmack says he is not a worrier. But he says there is a clear need to better understand what is happening. "I think it would be irresponsible to not observe and report on the ecosystems that are being impacted," says Carmack. "Irresponsible."
