US Gas Drilling Threatens Health of Rural Residents

Jon Hurdle, Reuters: "When her children started missing school because of persistent diarrhea and vomiting, Pat Farnelli began to wonder if she and her family were suffering from more than just a classroom bug. After trying several remedies, she stopped using the water drawn from her well in this rural corner of northeastern Pennsylvania, the forefront of a drilling boom in what may be the biggest US reserve of natural gas."

Anger over 46ft mobile mast

Published Date: 13 March 2009

By Esther Hutcheson

VODAFONE has been given the green light to install a phone mast more than 14m (46ft) high in Bo'ness that Falkirk Council rejected last year.

A planning appeal decision went the way of the telecoms giant despite the council and residents voicing concerns about it being an eyesore.

The mast will be sited on a grass verge next to the Drum Road/Grahamsdyke Road junction.

Vodafone say the new mast will improve coverage for customers using the mobile internet.

Inquiry reporter Michael Thomson of the directorate for planning and environmental appeals, appointed by Scottish Ministers, granted planning permission for the 14.2m (46.5ft) mast and base cabinet.

He concluded the site, which he personally visited, was probably the "optimum location in the area" and that nearby trees would help to screen the monopole.

Who Is America to Judge?

Mark Weisbrot, The Guardian UK: "The US state department's annual human rights report got an unusual amount of criticism this year. This time the centre-left coalition government of Chile was notable in joining other countries such as Bolivia, Venezuela and China - who have had more rocky relations with Washington - in questioning the moral authority of the US government's judging other countries' human rights practices."

More Companies At Risk of Failing

Moody's, the ratings agency, recently published a list of "bottom rung" companies most likely to default on their debt. The criteria are technical, but the upshot is that a lot of companies are in deep trouble - and the list is getting longer, not shorter.

Why the global economy is a Ponzi scheme and we are all Bernie Madoffs

by Joseph Romm

[E]very generation that comes after the Baby Boomers are poised to experience the dramatic changes in lifestyle that inevitably follow the collapse of any Ponzi scheme. … We aren’t all Madoffs in the sense of people who have knowingly created a fraudulent Ponzi scheme for humanity. But given all of the warnings from scientists and international governments over the past quarter-century … it has gotten harder and harder for any of us to pretend that we are innocent victims, that we aren’t just hoping we can maintain our own personal wealth and well-being for a few more decades before the day of reckoning...

Seven Years in Iraq

The War is Not Over

By John Ross

The first step in this charade of false closure is Obama's drawdown. The next is to make the citizens of the occupying power forget Iraq ever happened - a brainwashing that has been in process since the "success" of Bush's "surge." One problem though: how do you brainwash the brain dead?
