The Politics of the Man Behind "24"

For all its fictional liberties, "24" depicts the fight against Islamist extremism much as the Bush administration has defined it: as an all-consuming struggle for America's survival that demands the toughest of tactics. Not long after September 11, Vice President Dick Cheney alluded vaguely to the fact that America must begin working through the "dark side" in countering terrorism. On "24," the dark side is on full view. Joel Surnow - the co-creator and executive producer of "24," who has jokingly called himself a "right-wing nut job" - shares his show's hard-line perspective.

Army Says Fox TV's "24" Promotes Use of Torture in Iraq Prisons

Smearing Like It's 2003

E.J. Dionne Jr. writes: "The fabricate-and-smear cycle illustrated so dramatically during the case of I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby explains why President Bush is failing to rally support for the latest iteration of his Iraq policy. The administration's willingness at the outset to say anything - no matter how questionable - to justify the war, has destroyed its credibility. Its habit of attacking those who expressed misgivings has destroyed any goodwill it might have enjoyed. Bush and Cheney have lost the benefit of the doubt."

Three Charges in the Case for War

Michael T. Klare writes: "I am convinced that Bush has already decided an attack is his only option and the rest is a charade he must go through to satisfy his European allies. The proof of this, I believe, lies half-hidden in recent public statements of his, which, if pieced together, provide a casus belli, or formal list of justifications, for going to war."

GIs Petition Congress to End Iraq War

Correspondent Lara Logan heard dissension in the ranks from a large group of service members who are fed up and have decided to go public. They're not going AWOL, they're not disobeying orders or even refusing to fight in Iraq. But they are doing something unthinkable to many in uniform: bypassing the chain of command to denounce a war they're in the middle of fighting.

Application for phone mast

By Felicity Collinson

A MOBILE phone giant has lodged a planning request to erect a mast in the grounds of a cricket club.

T-Mobile wants to house the telecommunications mast in the form of a flag pole at Hartlepool Cricket Club, in Park Drive.

And, after having consultations with members of the West Park club, the phone giant has finally lodged a planning application to Hartlepool Borough Council.

However, there is no date as yet for when the issue will be discussed by the planning committee.

A council spokesman said: "The application has been submitted but there is no date for when it will be discussed as yet."

Last year, the Mail reported how the club was to receive a cash payment from T-Mobile for housing the mast, which would be used to buy an all-weather pitch.

And the club had no objections to the proposal as long as no danger to health could be proved.

However, there are objectors to the plan, including former councillor Jim Allan.

He is promoting a leaflet that will be sent to Park ward residents citing reasons why they should object to it.

The reasons include:

- It would be an unwelcome intrusion to the historic Park conservation area;
- The value of houses around the cricket club would be affected;
- Radiation from the mast could be detrimental to health and studies show sleeplessness, fatigue, irritability and sometimes cancer clusters;
- It would cause people to worry about their health;
- Radiation from the mast could affect the health of wildlife;
- French scientists recommend that masts are not erected closer than 900ft to areas where people live, work or play.

The Mail has previously reported concerns by Councillor Pauline Laffey, Conservative representative for the Park ward.

She said: "We have a park nearby and hundreds of homes, and I just don't think it's safe."

But Bill Shurmer, chairman of Hartlepool Cricket Club, said members believed the mast would be discreet and had allowed T-Mobile to proceed with a planning application.

He said: "We will do nothing that the experts consider a danger to health. "Indeed, any decision may be out of our hands, subject to the result of the planning application."

A T-Mobile spokesman said its interest was "due to the demand of services".

The next generation of threats

Boston Globe
by Ralph Kaplan & Harvey Silverglate

02/24/07

Much ink has been spilt extolling the latest progress made in recognizing the second- and third-most serious threats facing mankind and the planet. The recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has forced even the recalcitrant Bush administration to back down in the face of agreement between the scientific and political communities, prodded by a citizenry frightened by disturbing weather patterns. Meanwhile, the effort to control the world’s current supply of fissile material, and limit the future manufacture of more of it by rogue states, has picked up steam, fueled by scientists’ warnings and by public appeals from respected former officials. … Yet there is an even more urgent danger. Besides chemical and biological weapons, we are now seeing advances in the fields of genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics (so-called GNR technologies ) that threaten destruction even more horrific than that of atomic devices or climate change...

Will voters accept Hillary Clinton’s nonapology?

Christian Science Monitor
by Daniel Schorr

02/23/07

Welcome to the politics of apologia — the 2007 version. In the 2004 election, Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts had to endure charges that he was flip-flopping on funding for the Iraq war. In 1964, only two senators — Wayne Morse (D) of Oregon and Ernest Gruening (D) of Alaska — voted against the Tonkin Gulf Resolution authorizing President Johnson to expand the Vietnam War. I don’t recall any of the others offering apologies. So now, Sen. Hillary Clinton is being warned by some of her supporters that she may endanger her front-runner status if she refuses to make some outright apology for having voted along with 76 other senators in 2002 to empower the president to use force in Iraq. A simple ‘I was conned and I’m sorry it happened’ might have done it. But the evolution of her position is like a study in self-torture...

Exodus of Iraq’s ancient minorities

Independent [UK]
by Patrick Cockburn

02/26/07

Iraq’s minorities, some of the oldest communities in the world, are being driven from the country by a wave of violence against them because they are identified with the occupation and easy targets for kidnappers and death squads. A ‘huge exodus’ is now taking place, according to a report by Minority Rights Group International. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says 30 per cent of the 1.8 million Iraqis who have fled to Jordan, Syria and elsewhere come from the minorities. The Christians, who have lived in Iraq for 2,000 years, survived the Muslim invasion in the 7th century and the Mongol onslaught in the 13th but are now being eradicated as their churches are bombed and members of their faith hunted down and killed along with other minority faiths...
