Mobile mast protester who will not be silenced

Friday, November 03, 2006

RIGHT now there are over 50million mobile phones in use in this country — that’s coming close to one per head in our 59million population. Over the years our love affair with this new technology has ensured that the mobile phone manufacturers release ever more sophisticated models every couple of months.

At first there was the brick phone with a non-colour screen which literally weighed the same as a house brick.

Nowadays they come with vivid screens, cameras, music players and radios.

They’re a way of life. But then again so was smoking not so long ago. And like cigarettes there’s an increasing number of people who are pin-pointing mobile phones as a health hazard. It’s not just the phone itself — but the masts that are needed to carry the signals.

Mobile phones at present have short transmission ranges — so in order to ensure a signal, masts have to be erected at fairly frequent locations. Today there are 35,000 of these masts across Britain and the number is growing.

But increasing numbers of individuals and groups are doing battle with both the government and mobile phone operators over the siting of new masts and the possible radiation damage being emitted from them.

The quiet community of Wishaw in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands just near the Warwickshire border may at first seem an unlikely setting for what was a long-term battle with one mobile phone giant — but it was here that one woman’s campaign against the industry was won with the help of some Irish courage.

It is not just in this country or Ireland that the name of Eileen O’Connor is now well-known in the campaign. Her ongoing objections to the siting of these masts have encouraged other protests across the globe.

The story starts at Eileen’s home in Wishaw when a 74-foot high TMobile mast was erected 12 years ago on a patch of land some 300 yards at the rear of the house she shares with husband Paul and their teenage children George and Grace.

That mast is no more — but it took one of the most vigorous campaigns in this country before it came down one November night.

At first the presence of a mobile phone mast at the rear of their new home did not seem too important — Paul and Eileen were too busy renovating their home and bringing up their two children to take much notice of the multi-finned 22-metre high structure.

But a few years later Eileen began to feel unwell with constant headaches, loss of sleep and unexplained rashes all over her body. Also of concern to her was the fact that George began to have unexplained nose bleeds and Grace suffered nightmares.

Friends and neighbours in and around Wishaw also began to notice health problems.

The house too seemed full of electrostatic which could be felt in the bedroom when touching the metal bed frames.

In 2001 Eileen discovered a lump in one of her breasts. A visit to her GP resulted in an assurance that the lump was only a small cyst.

But a few weeks later the lump had doubled in size and was soon diagnosed as cancer. There followed six months of both chemo and radiotherapy before a major operation.

Today Eileen is still receiving treatment although the prognosis is that for the moment the cancer is in remission.

But Eileen is convinced the cause of her illness as well as the unexplained medical conditions suffered by her family and neighbours related to the siting of the mobile phone mast.

She began to research all the known facts relating to mobile phone mast radiation transmissions — and despite all the assurances issued by the mobile phone operators and government Eileen was still convinced the mast was to blame.

With the help and support of her friend and neighbour Lynn Insley Eileen began to document the various illnesses in and around Wishaw.

Among those living in 18 houses within a 500 yard radius of the mast there were 20 cases of serious illness including cancers of the breast, prostrate, bladder and lung.

One man had Motor Neurone disease and many of the people affected were only in their 30s and 40s.

With so many of her neighbours attending hospital for treatment at the same time as she was Eileen decided to set up SCRAM — Sutton Coldfield Residents Against Masts.

Calls to T-Mobile resulted in Eileen being told emissions from the mast were well below government guidelines.

But their answer failed to convince the campaigners — who enlisted national media and lobbied MPs Mike O’Brien, Patricia Hewitt, David Davies and John Ryan to take up their case.

The move worked. In November 2003 something or somebody pulled the mast from its base and left it lying on its side.

Eileen said: “When I went to see what had happened I cried with delight.

“Even to this day nobody in Wishaw seems to know how the mast came down.”

Naturally the phone company wanted their broken mast back — but they hadn’t bargained with the Siege of Wishaw.

Residents surrounded the downed mast with a posse of volunteers and camped on the site 24 hours a day determined there would be no mast replacement.

The stand-off lasted for almost 18 months until finally the mast owners admitted defeat.

But with victory secured Eileen and her friends refused to let the matter rest.

Today Eileen’s time is spent dealing with similar worldwide protests.

Her most recent involvement was when she was invited to speak at the Health Protection Agency in London where she presented her case for the health issues surrounding mobile phone masts.

Most pressing to her is trying to stop the siting of the masts near schools.

She said: “We will not stop the huge increase in mobile phone use but what we are all about is where these masts are sited. They should not be near schools.

“Wales has taken the lead with a recent vote at the National Assembly to the principle of full planning consent for mobile masts.

“This leaves England very much isolated as the only part of Britain where full planning consent for phone masts is not required.” Eileen is also turning her attention to Ireland — one of the heaviest users of mobile phones.

There Dubliner Con Colbert is waging his own battle over mobile phone masts — claiming he is suffering ill-health from transmissions from a transmitter on top of a garda station.

Mr Colbert also claims other people are suffering from a wide range of symptoms including burning of the skin and sleep disorders. He is just one of an increasing number of people now lobbying the Dáil for more data on mobile phone mast emissions.

In Ballygawley in Co. Tyrone villagers still talk about the 150-foot high phone mast which was cut down some years back. It was thought that the death of a local man in his early 50s from cancer precipitated the revolt against the mast.

At the time local SDLP councillor Anthony McGonnell was quoted as saying: “There have been a number of other people in that area who have cancer and obviously local people are very concerned that this epidemic is being caused by the presence of the mast.”

For Eileen this is an international issue — and she points to research in Germany and Russia which has backed her case. But she believes the amount of money the British Government receives from the mobile industry in taxes and levies means there is a reluctance to tackle the issue.

She said: “Right now the British Government receives some £10billion a year in revenue from the mobile phone industry.

“Emergency government funds should be released — starting with at least £50million in order to deal with translation of German and Russian research, an education programme, media campaign and funding to independent scientists to carry out further research.”

Despite all the statistics on safety handed out by the government and mobile phone operators Eileen still remains convinced long term exposure to phone mast emissions can cause serious health issues — and so the campaign will go on.

Eileen said: “There’s an election coming up and if politicians do not take note then the campaign we have had here in Wishaw will be a drop in the ocean compared with what we will plan.”

And does Eileen really know who pulled the mast down in Wishaw? “Do you believe in Leprachauns?” she smiles.

Phone mast squashed

02 November 2006

A PHONE mast which has blighted the lives of families for a decade has been removed.

The mast, operated by mobile phone giant Orange, has now been taken down from Bedonwell School, in Bedonwell Road, Belvedere.

Campaigner Alan Eaton, the brainchild behind action group Orange Squash, said: "We have long campaigned for the removal of this mast and finally it has been taken down."

Fellow resident Ted Gorman said: "The residents are delighted as for the first time in ten years they are no longer under the shadow of the mobile phone mast."

Orange have had a mast on the school site since 1995, but planned to remove it and replace it on a site 700 metres from the school.

The proposals outraged parents who feared for the health and safety of their children who attend the school.

Mr Eaton and fellow residents launched a campaign against the proposal collecting 300 signatures from parents.

He went on to collect a further 500 signatures and gave the petition to David Evennett, MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford, who handed it to Parliament. The mobile phone company has since found a new site to put their mast, in Woolwich Road, Belvedere. Councillor David Leaf is leading opposition against the proposals.

Bedonwell residents also have another campaign on their hands as T-Mobile has also claimed interest in the site.

Masts and care for community

devon.editorial @archant.co.uk

01 November 2006

SIR - I was delighted to read Tim Langdon's letter regarding mobile phone masts on church towers.

It was very helpful to get all the facts regarding money paid to the Government which makes it clear why the mobile phone companies are eager to claw back their investments.

As a member of St Mary's Church, where we are so often reminded of our need to care for our neighbours, I find it hard to understand that they are even thinking of having a mast on the church tower. There is no firm knowledge about the safety to public health and I hope that public opinion and care for the community will stop the mast being erected.

Church ditches phone mast plan

By East Lothian Newsroom

Thursday November 2, 2006

CONTROVERSIAL plans to erect a mobile phone mast inside the tower of Haddington West Church have been scrapped in the face of protests from residents.

Members of the NO 2 O2 action group collected 1,645 signatures in a petition against phone operator O2’s bid to install a ‘base station’ inside the Court Street church.

Fears were raised by locals who linked phone mast emissions to an increased risk of leukaemia.

Desiree Dunkinson, of Victoria Road, who led placard-waving battlers in silent protests outside the church, claimed independent research had shown that people living within 300 metres of such a mast could “suffer serious health effects”.

But at a meeting on Monday, members of the West Church’s congregational board passed a motion to end talks with O2, who had submitted a planning application to East Lothian Council for the transmitter, killing the base station plan stone dead.

A West Church spokesman told the Courier: “We have heard the voice of the community and the clear expression of perceived danger.

“Irrespective of the assurances provided by the official bodies set up to protect us, the board decided that this was principally a matter of relationships and that the Christian way was to build bridges rather than create barriers.”

The purpose of Monday’s meeting was to allow members to consider information and various opinions before making a decision on the matter.

NO 2 O2 handed over the petition, while board members also learned of the concerns of staff and parents at local schools and a number of congregation members.

The church learned there were 116 masts in East Lothian, many in town centres and closer to schools than the West Church.

An alternative motion to delay a decision until a number of current studies into potential risks had been published and evaluated was also defeated.

Mrs Dunkinson, who saw two cousins battle leukaemia, welcomed the board’s decision.

“We are delighted with the result that they are not going ahead with the 3Gmast and so will be all the people from Haddington who have supported us and have signed the petition,” she said.

“We would like to thank everybody who has helped and supported us with this campaign.

“The support has truly been amazing. We would like to thank the West Church for listening to the concerns of the community.”

Irish Post – Exclusive: how one Irish woman took on the mobile phone giants.

Make sure you buy the Irish post this week; it’s a National News paper, Reporter Brendan Farrell has done an excellent exclusive double page article on me and the phone mast campaign including photographs, leading from the enclosed attached photograph of me on the front page “thought I’d enclosed the photograph of me used in the news paper just in case you get me mixed up with the leprachauns”. Page 6 and 7 is titled “Mobile mast protester who will not be silenced” it’s brilliant and should create much needed awareness; it is out today for one week, although I can’t find it on the internet yet.

They have called me an Irish woman which is almost true as most people who originate from Liverpool are fondly know as Paddy’s who can swim.

I am proud to be called an Irish woman, after all I am married into an Irish Family and my own Grandparents have roots from Ireland, I’ve got that Irish blood running through my veins.

Remember, remember the fifth of November, 2003 ‘Bonfire night’ when the Wishaw mast mysteriously disappeared?

The article talks about the campaign to keep the felled Wishaw mast away after discovering the cancer cluster in the tiny hamlet of Wishaw. The final sentence in the new article says “Does Eileen really know who pulled the mast down in Wishaw? “Do you believe in Leprachauns?” she smiles.

Thankfully we still don’t know who is responsible, we often wonder about the mystery warrior; could the enclosed images of leprachauns ‘please see above and below’ be photographic evidence??????

Also attached a photograph taken when the Irish flag was flying on the CCTV camera pole in Wishaw this was a celebration of Paddy’s day, the camera is still in place today, keeping an eye on the empty phone mast site.

Dear Eileen: This is FABULOUS!!!!

I suspect "leprachauns" are really "angels-in-disguise!!!"

Many persons enjoy "wearing the green" and drinking green beer on St. Patrick's Day. I even treasure a small pin that until now, had forgotten about. It is a cute leprachaun. Maybe the pin should be worn "as a symbol" -- green being symbolic of healthier EMF/EMR environment and the leprachaun, an angel in-cognito.....???

The "Irish connection" also came up in another way. Jill Ungar, Research Editor for the Science and Public Policy Institute site http://www.sppionline.org referred to me as "A Whirling Dervish" in a recent email.

I guess I do "run-around-in-circles" a lot so the description is appropos (smiles).....

I have a local newspaper article with pictures of me using a gaussmeter by our two high voltage powerlines (about 7 years ago). Unfortunately the article did not stimulate any interest or lead to any sort of help (Minnesota) in regard to "waging the war" in spite of the reporter's willingness to convey my concerns particularly re childhood Leukaemia.

Jill is "a wee bit (alot) Irish too.....!!!" We know "more than a "little Irish" is frequently expressed by many of our EMF/EMR friends too!!!

I don't drink beer but would love to participate in a toast to better health for all at a celebration once funding is obtained for Prof. Olle Johansson (we KNOW he is "Irish" as well) -- maybe "green wine?" -- when the Charity Children With Leukaemia joins forces with Olle to allow for "proper white blood count studies," so "prudent avoidance issues" will once again be publicly announced???!!!!!

Take care "my Irish friend" and "keep thinking GREEN too" -- the "green" we need to reveal "secrets in red" (money for proper blood studies Prof. Olle Johansson is waiting to do)........ Joanne

Phone mast erection to avoid planning ban

01 November 2006
By Fiona Gray

Families are furious a mobile phone mast could go up on their doorstep because a neighbouring borough refused it.

Mobile network giant Orange has applied to Hackney council to rig up a mast on Royal Gate Apartments, in Rutland Road, near Victoria Park, only yards away from Lauriston Primary School to serve users in Tower Hamlets.

According to a planning application submitted to Hackney council last month, Tower Hamlets council has a "no negotiation policy" with mobile phone operators and the mast cannot be placed in the borough.

Tony Gregory, who lives in the Royal Gate Apartments, heads a residents' campaign which includes a petition of 900 signatures so far.

Plan withdrawn for phone mast

Published: 1st November 2006

ROMILEY villagers are celebrating defeating an attempt by phone giant Orange to put a mast in the village centre.

The application, which was to put a near 40ft mast outside Romiley Forum, had been due for a decision at last night's meeting of the Werneth Area Committee, but was withdrawn by the firm on Monday, following villagers’ concerns for the health of children at the local Romiley Primary School less than 100 metres away.

Head teacher John Furse had complained to Stockport Council and demanded assurances be given by Orange as to the future "health and well-being" of the school's 450 pupils.

Coun Syd Lloyd who had been due to hear the application said: "The contested application has been pulled by the phone operator. I don't know why it was withdrawn but it must have been because of the publicity and the strength of public feeling against it. However, I understand that Orange is still planning to site a mast somewhere in Romiley."

Darren Stannage, the manager of the Forum- based NK Theatre Arts charity, who had warned the mast could also affect the theatre's sound equipment and lead to its closure, said he was delighted at the outcome.

"I am very pleased that this application has been withdrawn. People hopefully have seen sense and have realised it's not the place to have a mast."

However, as the Stockport Express went to press last night the Werneth committee was discussing whether to approve an even bigger 56ft mobile mast by 02 on land owned by Network Rail at Romiley Railway Station. The application which was supported by Stockport Council officers stated that the new antenna, dish and cabinet are painted ivy green.

Lynne McGarty, the chairman of Bredbury and Romiley Community Association and a representative of Romiley Against Masts said last week that the group would oppose last night's application for the mast at the station on the grounds of visual amenity.

A council spokesman, said: "The application to erect a telecommunications mast at Romiley Village Centre has been withdrawn. The applicant Orange gave no reason for the withdrawal of the application."

Bonjour,
