Open air protest

By Lucy Stephens

CAMPAIGNERS protesting against a mobile phone mast in their village braved the cold and rain to take their demonstration out into the open.

A group of 100 villagers from Sheriff Hutton took tents and banners to a grass verge next to an offending phone mast in their village, which has been put up by phone giant Orange.

Although the 15ft mast has now been there for well over a year, it has not yet been switched on.

Villagers have mounted a fierce protest campaign calling for its removal. They have even pledged enough cash between them - some £60,000 - to have it removed.

But they say they have been frustrated by a lack of contact with Orange - and planned last night's demonstration to show the company that local feeling against the mast was still strong.

Linda Murphy, a mum-of-two who lives near the mast, said: "We're not going to let Orange get away with putting this mast here.

"We never wanted it. We want to show Orange that this strength of feeling hasn't gone away. It was put up nearly two years ago, it hasn't been switched on, and this is really to show the strength of support we have.

"A bit of rain doesn't hurt - but if this mast gets switched on, who knows what it will do?

"We want it away from here, it's near the school, it's near people with young families. But Orange won't speak to us. For a company which is supposed to be about communication, they're pretty poor at it."

The saga of the village's phone mast has been rumbling on for many months. Officials from Ryedale District Council failed to lodge a protest within the allotted timescale - which meant Orange had the right to put it up anyway.

Villagers have objected to the mast on health grounds.

But Martin Grey, government and community relations manager for Orange, said an independent review had concluded there was no "convincing scientific evidence" that signals from mobile phone base stations caused adverse ill health effects.

He said the company still intended to connect power to the mast, in order to provide network coverage in the area.

Irish Green party now in power plus given environment portfolio

Terrific news from here. Just click on http://www.ireland.com for today's front page Irish Times coverage plus photo of our new Minister for the Environment, former Green Party spokesman on health, John Gormley. Now that the Greens form part of the new Irish coalition government, our expectations have soared that something really will get done about all this dreadful electrosmog and our EHS health issue.

Villagers unite to battle phone mast proposals

By Kirsty Nicolson

Deeping Gate residents fighting against a mobile phone mast have met to draw up battle lines against the proposal.

Residents of Deeping Gate will be visiting the High Court on July 12 in a bid to quash a decision to establish the 80ft mast in Mumby's Yard, Suttons Lane.

They fear that the device could have dire consequences for electo-magnetically sensitive Pam Harris whose home will lie under its shadow.

Mrs Harris has to be hooked up to a machine for 17 hours every day to have essential nutrients pumped into her body.

She says if the mast goes ahead she will be forced to move house because of fears emissions from it may make the machine malfunction – with dire consequences.

She met with other residents at Northborough Village Hall to discuss the case – and encourage people to help fund their campaign.

She said: "The support we have had has been tremendous. We just decided to bite the bullet and fight this thing."

At the meeting, the chief executive of the Samworth Brothers, which owns the pastie group Ginsters, Brian Stein, talked about his experiences as a person who is electro-magnetically sensitive.

He says he developed the condition after using a mobile phone for 15 years and now gets cramps or even internal bleeding if exposed to emissions for too long.

In an inspirational talk, he told how he cannot use computers, modern cars or watch television without feeling very ill and he warned that people still do not yet know the long-term effects mobile technology has on health.

He said to guests: "These things may not have an effect on you, but they might your children.

"Don't stop your fight."

At the meeting villagers were urged to continue to raise funds to fight their cause.

They have so far mustered together £11,500, but they still need another £5,500 to cover fees which may be incurred if they lose the case.

Richard Thomas, who was chairing the meeting, said he was confident villagers could win the battle. He added: "However, I would urge people to help us raise the funds in case we need them.

"There is every chance you will get the money back."

John and Debs
Parsonage are two people who will live near the proposed mast.

Mrs Parsonage said: "This is all about money.

"We don't what the health effects of this mast are. We have two young children and we are concerned."

A spokesman for Hutchinson 3G said: "A claim has not been made against Hutchison 3G. The case has been brought by Pamela Harris against the Treasury Solicitor to challenge Peterborough City Council's planning decision. Therefore, Hutchison 3G is currently not in a position to comment on the actual case."

The company said there is little proven scientific evidence to support the idea of electromagnetic hypersensitivity and, according to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) fact sheet on electromagnetic hypersensitivity, base stations and mobile phone telophony have not been shown to cause such symptoms.

Phone mast rent signals profits

By Kate Martin

MOBILE phone masts are netting Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council more than £10,000 a year.

In response to a Freedom of Information request submitted by The Gazette, the council revealed it collected £10,260 in rent during 2006 from mobile phone companies that have erected masts on sites across the borough.

But the council's legal experts refused to say how much money each individual site makes because the figures are "commercially sensitive" - despite Hampshire County Council agreeing to release similar information about its own rental income from phone masts.

Figures from the borough council show it made £3,664 a year from a single lease in 2002 to 2004, and this sum increased to £10,260 a year in 2005 and 2006 when four new leases began alongside the original agreement.

Three of the leases run for 10 years and two run for 15 years. This includes a lease on a site at Manydown. Although the farmland is jointly owned by the borough council and the county council, the rent is collected solely by the borough.

When The Gazette asked how much money the council makes from individual sites, the council refused to answer the question.

Joanna Williams, from the council's legal and democratic services, said: "Disclosure of all, or part, of this information would prejudice the council's commercial interests and potentially its lessee partners by association.

"It is in the public interest to protect the council's position as a commercial landowner and maintain its competitive character, thus helping to secure income and enabling the council to use such income for the benefit of the borough's residents and communities."

Hampshire County Council collects rent from just one site in Basingstoke and Deane, at Aldworth Science College in Basingstoke. The site currently generates a rental income of £8,750 a year.

Local mast campaigner Simon Preedy said he would prefer to see mobile phone operators pay local authorities a higher rent for the masts.

He told The Gazette: "Extra money could then be set aside for independent research into the non-thermal pulsed microwave emissions that many are concerned about - emissions that our Government doesn't take into account - as opposed to research funded and sponsored by the telecoms industry, which may be biased."

Loddon phone mast row

LUCY BOLTON

13 June 2007 08:44

Families angry at proposals for a controversial phone mast close to a fire station in a south Norfolk village face an agonising wait to see if it gets the go-ahead.

South Norfolk Council's planning committee meets tomorrowwhen it will decide whether to give permission to the 15-metre mast T-Mobile want to put up at the fire station on the High Street, Loddon to improve the signal black spot in the area.

But the council has received 36 objections from families living in the area concerned about the health and environmental risks posed by the mast which is close to nearby schools and a conservation spot.

Council officers have recommended the planning committee refuse the application because it would not “preserve or enhance the Conservation Area” and would be “detrimental to the visual amenities” of the area.

Jim Leathers, 74, who lives with his wife Eileen in Norwich Road, Thurton, near Loddon, fought an unsuccessful battle with Orange to prevent an eight metre mast going up near his home.

Mr Leathers said he did not think it was the right place for a mast to go and urged councillors to refuse it unless a more suitable location could be found.

“The fire station is a bad choice of location,” he said. “There's even a nursery school opposite and no one knows what effect it has - apparently it's worse for children whose brains haven't formed properly.

“You even have the post office opposite where people congregate. I think it's very bad sticking these things in a populated area. “They don't take the ordinary people's views - I am against it and it is wrong. No one can prove the effect either way - you don't know until time passes what effect these things will have on people.”

The Evening News, through our Put Masts on Hold campaign, has fought against the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe.

Loddon Parish Council also has a number of concerns about the application which it states “is not is not in keeping with the street scene” and poses a possible risk to health “especially with the close proximity of schools and nurseries”.

Objectors to the mast have suggested the mast would be better served on an industrial estate, or even on top of the church tower.

But the council has also received five letters in support of the scheme which they say will improve the signal in the area, and would help improve the situation for businesses in the area.

John Carwardine, T-Mobile communication affairs manager, said: “We have to conform to very strict international and national health and safety guidelines. In citing where mobile phone base stations are located, we always try to find a balance between the needs of the customers and the environment.

“There are over 60million mobile phone users in the country and without masts the mobile phone network will not work.”
