Residents of Corsham's Alexander Terrace campaigned against a T-Mobile phone mast

Angry residents were relieved to learn of the council's decision to refuse planning permission for a controversial phone mast.

North Wiltshire District Council's Development Control Committee, in a heated debate on Wednesday night (Aug 29), decided to reject the planning application following objection from dozens of Corsham residents.

Phone provider T-Mobile had applied to erect a 6.5 metre tall telecommunications mast on top of Corsham's old telephone exchange in Alexander terrace.

KOLKATA: A pregnant woman suffered burns in eastern India after the battery of her Nokia mobile phone exploded minutes after she put the handset on charge, police said Saturday.

The Finnish phone maker warned last month in front-page advertisements in leading Indian dailies that some of its batteries were overheating after around 100 such incidents were reported globally.

The battery that exploded was, however from the firm's BL-D3 series, and not from BL-5C that Nokia recalled a month ago, police said.

Residents in north Watford have criticised a "sneaky" mobile phone company for attempting to extend a huge phone mast inside the grounds of a primary school during the summer holidays.

Mobile phone firm Orange has applied for permission to construct three additional antennas and an extra dish on an existing telecommunication mast, as well as move it.

The mast is inside the grounds of Orchard Primary School, in Gammons Lane, but Orange wants to make the mast bigger and needs to rebuild it.

Hilda Forsyth, 76, says she has deeds proving the verge of grass outside her home on Picker-sleigh Road, Malvern, is legally hers.

My son is now starting his senior school and he wants to get a mobile phone. I wasn’t sure he really needed one, but then it got me thinking whether I really needed one, too. I must admit I sometimes find it very convenient but is it ethical to own a mobile phone?

Dear Tony,

Your child needs a mobile phone like he needs a hole in the head, which is exactly what he’ll have if he keeps frying his brains with one of those things. There is nothing natural about holding something to your head that transmits the same stuff they use for cooking food in microwave ovens. Dreadful though microwave ovens are (another column, I fear), at least they try to keep all the radiation in a box. With mobile phones, it’s next to your head. In fact, it’s all around us with those huge transmitters that are a threat to life and a blot on the landscape.

VODAFONE has this week moved to clear up confusion surrounding the erection of two large phone masts on Harmonstown Road.

A local resident contacted Northside People to voice his concerns over the erection of the two masts beside an existing mast on Brookwood House, which he initially believed might have been placed there without proper planning permission.

A WOMAN who has spent hundreds screening her home from radiation, claims a phone mast is making her ill.

Jo Greenwood-Bostock, 54, came forward as Sefton’s councillors produced a report claiming many residents living near masts are experiencing identical symptoms.

Jo was initially unconcerned when she watched workmen erecting the mast 500 metres from her home in 2004.

The Ince Blundell grandmother, who has lived near Orrell Hill Wood for 30 years, only started worrying when symptoms of tinnitus, severe headaches and insomnia began.

A 20-METRE phone mast could dominate the skyline of one of Winchester's most densely populated areas, residents fear.

People living in Fairfield and Cranworth Roads in Fulflood say the Vodafone tower plan in Andover Road could ruin the visual beauty of the city, as well as affect their health.

James Read, who lives in Fairfield Road, said of the proposal for Hunts Frozen Foods, near to the railway station: "The huge mast is unsuited to the centre of Winchester, supposedly the number one city in which to live in the UK.

"It would be in a visually-devastating central Winchester site, with unknown health risks."
