Petition aims to stop mast

30 August 2007

EDITORIAL - heraldnews@archant.co.uk

AN ATTEMPT to erect another mobile phone mast in Bishop's Stortford has been met with fierce opposition.

The planning application by telecoms company O2 has sparked a petition by nearby residents who are confused over the proposed height of the new tower.

Eve and Terry Pearson of Marguerite Way, Bishop's Stortford, campaigned against the 12.5m mast planned near their home by the roundabout on Great Hadham Road, after receiving a letter from East Herts Council back in May.

By Pat Stannard

ANGRY residents are calling on a vicar to resign after a church was allowed to attach a phone mast to its spire.

Despite fears that the mast will be used to distribute pornography to children, telecommunications giant T-Mobile was given the green light by the ecclesiastical Court of Arches to erect it on SS Peter and Paul Church, The Green, Chingford.

Under 16? Sorry No Cell Phones, Says New Indian Guideline

Not 16? Say no to cell - Telecom unit proposes mystifying cut-off age

New Delhi, Aug. 28: Children below 16 years should be discouraged from using mobile phones, a government-affiliated cell has said, claiming the gadgets could be a health risk.

Leading international health agencies, though, say there is no scientific evidence of such risk.

Draft guidelines prepared by the Telecom Engineering Centre, which is under the department of telecommunications (DoT), say the antennae used by telecom operators radiate radio-frequency electromagnetic waves, which heat up tissues and may harm people.

Beware the cellphone

New Denver, B.C. — To some residents of New Denver, the greatest threat to their way of life is not terrorism, but cellphones.

Citing concerns over health and a change of culture, about 250 people — roughly half the population of the southeastern B.C. village — are petitioning against Telus's plan to install an antenna and bring cellphone service to the community.

Residents vow to fight mast plans for water tower

By Lynn Jackson

WORRIED Poole residents have pledged to fight plans for a mobile phone mast installation on an unique Victorian water tower.

Operator T-Mobile wants to put up three antennae and other base station equipment on top of the Grade II-listed water tower in Broadstone.

But campaigners say the plans will spoil the character of the historic building and also fear possible health risks to local residents and children at a nearby school.
