Posted: Oct 14, 2008 at 0143 hrs IST

Ludhiana, October 13 Fuelling another debate on the installation of cell phone towers in the residential complexes, the residents of Mission Compound near Kalvary Church are up in arms against a reputed Telecom firm.

The residents have written to the chief minister, district administration and the municipal corporation seeking the dismantling of the tower at the earliest, stating potential health hazards caused by radio frequency radiations.

Mobile antenna approved near school for disabled

James Debono

The Education Department has given its blessing to the installation of a mobile phone antenna, just 70 metres away from the Dun Manwel Attard school for the disabled, in Wardija.

The school caters for students with “diverse special needs” and “multi-disabilities”.

Although scientific opinion remains divided on whether mobile phone antennae pose any health risk to residents living next to them, the World Health Organisation (WHO) calls for “special consideration” when antennas are located next to schools.

Amid fears that the antenna poses a health risk to students on Thursday, Wardija residents presented an injunction warrant in the law courts to stop the installation of the antenna.

Mobile base stations and health

Patrick Pace, Mellieħa

In recent articles, stating that mobile base stations are harmless, the European Commission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Commission of Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) were all mentioned to be backing this statement.

Then why doesn't someone inform the public and especially the concerned "unlucky people" that happen to live near mobile base stations without any choice, of the latest news? Well the answer is probably because it isn't really good news for those of us, "unlucky people", who have the antennae forced upon us; the news was not "mobile base stations are harmless" but more like "there are reasons for precaution".

Ken's heart fears over new phone mast

A heart patient fears a mobile phone mast due to go up just metres from his Lincoln home will harm his health.

Ken Marsh, who wears a pacemaker, says he will continue to fight plans for the mast following a two-year wrangle.

In 2006 he wrote to Lincoln City Council objecting to proposals for the 12-metre high mast in Skellingthorpe Road, Lincoln.

But a "legal loophole" now means that company Vodafone can go ahead.

Mr Marsh (71) fears that emissions from the mast will interfere with his pacemaker or cause other health problems, such as cancer.

"Until someone comes up with some evidence to prove otherwise I will continue to worry that it will upset the settings on my pacemaker," said the retired engineer of Malham Drive, around 25 metres from the mast site.

Wi-fi: Better safe than sorry

M Mohamed Idris | Sep 26, 08 5:03pm
http://iamblogger-blogspot.blogspot.com/2008/10/wi-fi-better-safe-than-sorry.html

We refer to the Malaysiakini article CAP is being unreasonable.
http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/90172

There is sound basis for our call, which we hope the Penang state government will heed, in the name of public health. CAP is an independent, non-profit and non-politically affiliated body that has only the interests of consumers in mind, so there is no hidden agenda for the above call as implied by the writer. The following facts are self-explanatory.

Wi-fi, like mobile phones, is an untested technology, meaning that it hasn’t yet been proven safe for use. Wi-fi operates in a way very similar to mobile phones – which should be of concern, as it is now believed that the universal use of mobile phones may be storing up medical catastrophes for the future.

Like mobile phones and their towers (or masts), wi-fi also emits microwave radiation. Though virtually no research has been carried out, public health advocates and some scientists expect them to have similar ill-effects. It is reported that we are all now living in a soup of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) one billion times stronger than the natural fields in which living cells have developed over the last 3.8 billion years.

At current exposure levels, microwave radiation is already questionable, prompting the German government to warn its people to avoid mobile phone and wi-fi use. The world’s top experts have also advised caution in recent years.

The latest scientific opinion on electromagnetic fields – a 610-page Bioinitiative Report written by 14 scientists, public health and public policy experts, and reviewed by a dozen others, which represents a strong comprehensive review of EMR science, perhaps the most precise done to date – has concluded that existing public safety standards for microwave radiation in nearly every country of the world are “thousands of times too lenient”.

In September 2006, more than 30 scientists from all over the world collectively stated in the Benevento Resolution (issued by the International Commission on Electromagnetic Safety) that: “There is evidence for adverse health effects, including cancer and electro-hypersensitivity, from microwave radiation at current exposure levels, and that a precautionary approach should be adopted”.

It is thus important to take a precautionary approach until more is understood about possible health impacts of wireless technology.

Absence of conclusive studies should not prevent reasonable efforts by the powers that be in our country to respond to the information at hand, as has been done overseas.

In Germany, the government in 2007, warned its citizens to avoid using wi-fi. The ruling was on the basis that a possible risk has not been ruled out, rather than because an actual threat has been determined. It recommends avoiding exposure to wi-fi “because it is a new technology and all the research into its health effects has not yet been carried out”.

The German action, the most damning made by any government on the fast-growing technology, is a stark contrast to the unhesitating promotion of the technology by the Penang state government.

The state government should be informing citizens of – and protecting them from – the wi-fi health risks, not arbitrarily imposing this hazardous technology on them. This new technology may be liberating, but it does not warrant the increase in radiation and the potential risks to the health of Penangites.

At a time when governments around the world are beginning to question the safety of wireless technology, Penang is hastily embracing it to the future detriment of her people. This is not only totally unacceptable, but also highly irresponsible on the state government’s part.

In the present EMF research climate, a move in the right direction is to have say, mobile phone-free zones for starters, followed by wi-fi free zones, if the state government is truly committed to protecting people’s health. Instead, Penangites are pushed into accepting a wi-fi dominated environment with the recent state decision.

Adoption of wi-fi technology may appear to be a positive global trend today, but from a public health standpoint, its use has now gone out of control worldwide. It is a grave mistake to see wi-fi technology as a craze worth emulating as the trend now is towards increasing international concern. It is also a social injustice to involuntarily expose all Penangites to its potentially serious health threats with its free implementation statewide.

In the light of present evidence, CAP also calls on the Malaysian authorities in general to be vigilant over the public’s exposure to electromagnetic radiation from rapidly expanding new technologies throughout the country and implement measures to reduce exposures, especially to vulnerable groups, such as children.

As for the Penang state government, it should place people’s health above other interests. In the interest of all, CAP calls on the state government to find alternatives that do not pose the same level of possible health risks as wi-fi, while there is still time to make changes.

The writer is president of the Consumers’ Association of Penang

Council dithering blamed for mast

Sunday, October 12, 2008, 09:00

A MOBILE firm says Swansea Council's dithering has once again resulted in a phone mast going up — despite the scheme being refused planning permission.

Vodafone bosses claim they did not receive an official notice in time, which ruled a transmitter in Gorseinon was not allowed to go ahead.

Residents, who say the mast is too near homes and fear it could damage their health, are furious.

Hazel Stock's Lime Street home is just 15 metres behind the towering mast.

She said: "If this mast has been allowed to stay up because of an administrative error then I am really angry. This mast is too close to residential areas and clearly should not be allowed to have been put up."

Phone mast 'yes' despite concerns

11/10/2008

A CONTROVERSIAL mobile phone mast looks set to be built on hills above Whitworth.

Members of Rossendale Council’s development control committee approved the plan by six votes to one at a meeting at Hardmans Mill on Monday night.

Councillors accepted a prior notification application by communications giant Orange to build the 15-metre structure in High Barn Lane, close to Cowm Reservoir and other Green Belt land.

Nearly 650 individual letters of objection from local residents were received by the council. Concerns included the visual impact the scheme would have on the landscape, that a magnetic field set up by the phone mast would affect wildlife, radiation emitted from the column could be harmful to people and that the proposed construction was too large.

Councillor Catherine Pilling told the committee she had concerns about the mast’s location and also noted the number of objections to the application.

Wireless Mind, Gullible Mind

By Chellis Glendinning

I have been contemplating the infamous Trojan Horse whose deus-ex-machina arrival at the edge of Troy stirred wonder among the gullible citizens, only to lure them to their demise.

I think such thoughts because another mighty horse has been steered into our midst, and like Trojans we have thrown open the gates to welcome it in.

I am referring to the onslaught of wireless technologies in the form of microwave towers, satellites showering the planet with radiation, Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) ports, Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) antennas -- plus all the gadgets they make possible: cordless phones, pagers, Blackberries, roving laptops, wireless water meters, satellite TV and radio, in-flight internet. I am referring as well to the electromagnetic weapons, radiation-emitting stations, surveillance instruments, and crowd-control devices military and law enforcement deploy.

Flintshire parents' fears at plans for phone mast near school

Resident Jean Pickford hands the petition against the proposed phone mast to Cllr Aaron Shotton and Mark Tami MP. (mc160908f)

Published Date: 23 September 2008

By Kate Forrester

FEARS have been voiced over plans to install a mobile phone mast in the middle of a housing estate, next to a primary school.

Residents of Englefield Avenue, Connah's Quay, have handed a petition of more than 300 signatures to Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami, protesting against the proposed phone mast.

Mobile phone network giants Vodafone have put forward plans to install the eight metre phone mast near the junction of Englefield Avenue and Hillside Avenue.

But it has been met with outrage from nearby householders, who say it is too near Bryn Deva Primary School, given the uncertainty surrounding phone masts and health risks.
