How will the U.S. Service its Debt?

Global Insolvency

By: Bob Chapman

How can the US conceivably extricate itself from debt? That is $1 to $2 trillion deficits annually as far as the eye can see. It is already bogged down in an occupation in Iraq and a war in Afghanistan that stretches into Pakistan. That is all off budget, but it stretches already to more than $1 trillion. Then there is the phony, phantom war on terror the cost of which is unknown.

The Crisis Is Not Over

By Paul Craig Roberts

Readers ask if the financial crisis is over, if the recovery is for real and, if not, what are Americans' prospects. The short answer is that the financial crisis is not over, the recovery is not real, and the U.S. faces a far worse crisis than the financial one.

February 02, 2010 "Washington Post" -- The share of borrowers who are falling seriously behind on loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration jumped by more than a third in the past year, foreshadowing a crush of foreclosures that could further buffet an agency vital to the housing market's recovery.

Deficit deja vu

Heartland Institute
by Steve Stanek

02/05/10

President Barack Obama Tuesday (Feb. 2, 2010) introduced his budget for next fiscal year. To put it into perspective, consider this: The estimated budget deficit — just the deficit — almost matches the entire federal budget when George W. Bush became president in 2001. A strong case could be made that Bush and Obama represent the most fiscally irresponsible back-to-back presidencies in national history...

How government (mostly) created financial crisis

Orange Punch
by Alan Bock

02/05/10

Of course, there are reasons that the narrative survives and, in fact, dominates most conventional discourse — not surprising given that the president has the biggest megaphone in the country, and most of the media simply parrot him: The financial crisis was caused by private greed and unwarranted risk-taking, even ‘predatory lending.’ People in government want you to believe they saved us from all that and have the formula to prevent it ever happening again, if we’ll just cede them the power. So the role of government policies and institutions in creating the crisis is an inconvenient aspect that we don’t need to mention in polite society. That’s why a book like Johan Norberg’s ‘Financial Fiasco’ is so essential to understanding the recent past and charting a course for the future...

In last week’s State of the Union address, President Barack Obama declared that he would freeze government spending for three years, excepting Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and ’spending related to our national security.’ This week, we can see what that blanket exemption for the Pentagon will cost us. The base budget (which excludes war costs) weighs in at a whopping $548.9 billion, the largest since the end of World War II. Military spending advocates might note that this represents just a 3.4 percent increase over last year, but inflation-adjusted spending on national defense has ballooned by 60 percent over the past 10 years...

The Budget Deficit Crisis Puzzle

Dean Baker, Truthout: "The country faces a serious crisis in the form of a manufactured crisis over the budget deficit. This is a crisis because concerns over the size of the budget deficit are preventing the government from taking the steps needed to reduce the unemployment rate. This creates the absurd situation where we have millions of people who are unemployed, not because of their own lack of skills or unwillingness to work, but because people like Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke mismanaged the economy."

100 Tage Streit, Chaos und soziale Kälte

3. Februar 2010

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign had few leaks and little infighting, earning it the reputation of ‘no drama.’ The same spirit has mostly carried through into Obama’s governing phase — we’ve heard very little about whatever fights have occurred inside the White House. But that’s changed lately, most notably with two salvos in The Washington Post — one nominally an opinion column from Dana Milbank and the other nominally a news piece from Jason Horowitz — both arguing that Obama wouldn’t have so many political problems if he had only listened to Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s advice...

What are the consequences of Obama’s $3.8 billion budget?

FreedomWorks
by BPeck

Instead of choosing to abandon the Keynesian tax, borrow, and spend philosophy for which he has become notorious, Obama will continue to raise taxes for hard working Americans, increase discretionary spending faster than the tax dollars come in, and therefore create more debt for the current and future taxpayers of America. I’m not exactly sure how this approach exemplifies fiscal responsibility; a priority that Obama emphasized the importance of achieving during last week’s State of the Union Address...

Das letzte Aufgebot für Hartz IV

2. Februar 2010

UK Inquiry 'Toothless' and 'Feeble' in Probing Origins of Iraq War

Where is our Chilcot?

AntiWar.Com

02/02/10

He was defiant and unrepentant — he even made a few people sob in disgust — but there he was on Friday, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, sitting for a six-hour public inquest on his role in taking England down the bloody path to war seven years ago this March. Pity is, the chances of getting George W. Bush to take a similar hot seat here in the United States seem only slightly better than seeing Martians land a flying saucer on the National Mall...

The case against Tony Blair

CounterPunch
by Patrick Cockburn

02/01/10

In trying to prove him mendacious, critics of Blair underplay his incompetence. His very fluency as a propagandist militated against long term military success. He conflates the invasion of Iraq with the long term occupation of Iraq as if both were seen as acts of liberation by ordinary Iraqis. The US and Britain might just have got away with overthrowing Saddam Hussein, whom most Iraqis wanted to see the back of, but a long term imperial occupation was never going to succeed because it had too many enemies inside and outside the country. It was striking in Blair’s testimony that so many of his references to Iraq are inaccurate...

The Second Great Depression Bogeyman

Dean Baker, Truthout: "Our political leaders continually assert that we should be thanking them that we are not in a second Great Depression rather than complaining about how bad things are. The second Great Depression theme came up repeatedly in the debate over the reappointment of Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke. Paulson and the fear factor

Independent Institute
by Alvaro Vargas Llosa

02/17/10

We think of statism as born out of altruism or megalomania. But here a third cause transpired: naked, primeval fear. The notion that people could be left to sort themselves out in the biggest financial crisis since the 1930s was terrifying even for Paulson, a true believer in free markets who keeps repeating in his book that he disliked what he was doing. The fear was so overpowering that Paulson, his colleagues and Wall Street decided to put unconditional faith in the very institution, the federal government, that the author tells us was responsible for the conditions under which the housing bubble occurred: easy money, political incentives for homeownership and regulatory incompetence...

Obama’s decision to assassinate Americans overseas without any due process might well be viewed as an inevitable development from the established practice of killing foreigners using hellfire missiles fired from unmanned drones in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. The United States has not declared war on any of those countries yet it reserves to itself the right to attack and kill local residents based on information that it does not subsequently have to reveal. This process is given a legal fig leaf by the US assertion that anyone connected to a terrorist group can be killed anywhere in the world and at any time. It assumes that in such matters the United States has extraterritorial jurisdiction, a claim that no other nation makes and which might reasonably be contested by those on the receiving end. It also does not require the President of the United States to prove his case that someone actually was a terrorist...

The US can no longer afford its empire

Independent Institute

02/03/10

President Obama has presented Congress with a spending request of $3.8 trillion for the next fiscal year in 2011, but with a third of it not paid for with taxes, thus resulting in a $1.3 trillion deficit (a whopping 8.3 percent of GDP). The small piece of good news is that this deficit is smaller as a portion of the nation’s economic output than this year’s gargantuan 10.6 percent for FY 2010 (that $1.6 trillion deficit is a post-World War II record). Budget deficits of this magnitude have occurred before, but only during cataclysmic wars — the Civil War and World Wars I and II. Contrary to the rhetoric of congressional Republicans, who are stridently criticizing Obama for his excessive spending, these budget deficits are largely the result of George W. Bush’s new entitlement program (Medicare prescription drug coverage), the usual Republican fake tax cuts (tax cuts without concomitant reductions in government spending), bank and insurance bailouts, and the conduct of two disastrous U.S. occupations of foreign countries. Of course, Obama is far from blameless...

The Creed of Objectivity Killed the News

The symbiotic relationship between the press and the power elite worked for nearly a century. It worked as long as our power elite, no matter how ruthless or insensitive, was competent. But once our power elite became incompetent and morally bankrupt, the press, along with the power elite, lost its final vestige of credibility. The press became, as seen in the Iraq war and the aftermath of the financial upheavals, a class of courtiers.

Hijacking Democracy to Spy on Americans

Shahid Buttar, Truthout: "Nearly a decade ago, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) stood alone as the Senate's constitutional conscience. Casting the only dissenting vote against passage of the Patriot Act in 2001, he was powerless to stop an opportunistic power grab by neoconservatives who had long sought, well before the tragedy of 9/11, to expand our government's reach into the lives of law-abiding Americans."

Review: "Rounded Up: Artificial Terrorists and Muslim Entrapment After 9/11"

Katherine Hughes, Truthout: "In a time and place where Muslims have learned it's prudent to be silent, we should be especially grateful to Shamshad Ahmad for having the courage to write his book, 'Rounded Up.' The book opens with a quote from the Prophet Muhammad, 'The highest form of jihad is to speak the truth in the face of an unjust ruler,' and Ahmad's book is the embodiment of this quote. Understated and powerful, with respect for fact, each page is testament to his belief that the truth can indeed set us free."

Defectors and Deception in Afghanistan

Welcoming the Taliban with Open Arms

By Douglas Valentine

In reality, defectors programs like the one proposed for Afghanistan are an essential part of the traditional U.S. pacification policy. For example, the so-called Chieu Hoi "Open Arms" program is touted by military historians as having produced positive results throughout the Vietnam War by offering "clemency to insurgents."
