More airport security won’t stop terrorists; leaving Middle East would

Christian Science Monitor
by Jeffrey A. Miron

01/28/10

Earlier this week, Osama bin Laden praised the Christmas Day attack in which a Nigerian-born man living in London attempted to blow up a Detroit-bound airplane by igniting explosives in his underwear. Mr. bin Laden’s endorsement, along with recent attacks in Baghdad, raise concerns about a new round of attacks against the United States. Politicians, security experts, and pundits have therefore called for heightened security measures at airports and on airplanes. It won’t work without addressing why there are attacks to begin with...

Read between bin Laden’s lies

Boston Globe
by staff

01/29/10

Nobody in his right mind would expect any truth-telling from Osama bin Laden’s latest audiotape, a one-minute burst of bravado broadcast on Al Jazeera TV. Still, it is important to spot the particular deceptions bin Laden is peddling, because they reveal how badly Al Qaeda has alienated Muslim audiences around the world. … Never mind that the Yemen-based group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula already took credit for the Christmas attack, calling it retaliation for US intelligence assistance used by Yemen’s government in attacks on the terrorist group. Bin Laden’s big lie came with his evocation of the Palestinian cause … to counter revulsion in the Muslim world at scenes of innocent Muslims being killed and maimed by fanaticized murderers acting in the name of Al Qaeda...

The State of the Empire

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

01/29/10

Economically ruinous, culturally poisonous, socially disruptive, and subversive of the Constitution, the very idea of imperialism is antithetical to our traditions and alien to the American character. That is why our more recent wars of conquest (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan) have been so wrenching, domestically, and the cause of such bitter controversy: they required the sort of self-violation that is usually restricted to mental patients who maim themselves habitually...

Read any account of economic history from the late middles ages through the 19th century and try to find any evidence of the existence of unemployment. You won’t find it. Why is that? Because long-term unemployment is a fixture of the modern world created by the interventionist state. ‘We’ try to cure it and ‘we’ ended up doing the opposite...

Obama’s campaign finance rhetoric is misleading

FreedomWorks
by BPeck

01/28/10

Actions will always speak louder than words. For instance, President Barack Obama preaching a minimal role for corporations in funding campaigns isn’t ethical when in fact he himself was a major recipient of corporate funds leading up to his presidential election in 2008. In fact, according to The Washington Examiner, ‘Obama’s $995,000 from employees and executives at investment bank giant Goldman Sachs is the most a politician has raised from a single company since the 2001 campaign finance reform law’...

Corporations don’t threaten our freedoms; government threatens our freedoms. Government has the power, not corporations. Government has the guns. Government has the police, the prosecutors, the jailers, the military. They have the physical ability to exert as much or as little ‘influence’ over all of society, corporations included, as they care to exert. Corporations have none of that. You wanted populism?

The New Republic

Going into the State of the Union, it was easy to expect a speech steeped in populism. The consensus was that the White House had misjudged the country’s anger over bailouts and unemployment, all of which boiled over in Massachusetts. And so, beginning last Wednesday, Obama went out of his way to channel that anger at Wall Street. ‘We’re about to get into a big fight with the banks,’ the president told George Stephanopoulos the day after the Kennedy seat went Republican...

Populism, left and right

Not content with going overseas in search of monsters to destroy, the current administration and its supporters are conjuring them right here at home. In any case, creating monsters, both real and imagined, is the one thing the US government is really good at. Our elites hate populism in all its forms simply because it threatens their power, their privileges, their pelf and their prestige: populism is by definition a revolt against the elites, in government and society. Worst of all, from a ruling class perspective, is populism of the ‘antigovernment’ variety, because it threatens the source and symbol of their power: what Murray Rothbard called the Welfare-Warfare State...

Obama sees both sides now

San Francisco Chronicle
by Debra J. Saunders

01/28/10

It all looked so easy in August 2008, when Sen. Barack Obama spoke before the Democratic National Convention in Denver. The Democrats were going to win in November, storm Washington with their reforming ways, and because they were so much smarter than everyone else, they’d know how to get the American economy cooking. There was no doubt as the enthusiastic Invesco Field throng cheered and chanted, ‘Yes, we can.’ Well, never mind. After the Democrats squeezed floor votes for unpopular health care legislation through the House and Senate, independent voters are turning on Obama, conservatives never warmed to him and the far-left base feels betrayed. It turns out that governing is a lot harder than lobbing mud and vitriol at the Bushies. Perhaps that is why, after having won office, Obama can’t stop...

In a speech at the University of Denver in 2008 just days before the Super Tuesday primaries, then-Senator Barack Obama said: ‘Democrats will win in November and build a majority in Congress not by nominating a candidate who will unite the other party against us, but by choosing one who can unite this country around a movement for change.’ Well, a year into his presidency Obama finds Republicans — in both houses of Congress — as well as moderate and independent voters, united against his expensive and unpopular agenda, and he made it clear that the White House is ‘not hitting a reset button at all’ … So the pundits who predicted Obama would pivot, move to the center and admit his mistakes … were wrong...

Finally, I called Chip Berlet of Political Research Associates … ‘Chip, how many far-right wingers are there in the United States?’ … Chip didn’t even skip a beat. ‘Ten percent of the population. … It’s been the same number for most of our history, and it doesn’t change much.’ He went on to explain that no matter how they define ‘far right’ or ‘authoritarian,’ no matter how they count up the fundamentalists and nationalists and proto-fascists, the numbers always come up somewhere between 7 percent and 12 percent. Or, on average, about 10 percent. Always. And it’s been that way going back as far as they can go...

Obama's Secret Prisons: Night Raids, Hidden Detention Centers, the "Black Jail" and the Dogs of War in Afghanistan

Anand Gopal, TomDispatch.com: "One quiet, wintry night last year in the eastern Afghan town of Khost, a young government employee named Ismatullah simply vanished. He had last been seen in the town's bazaar with a group of friends. Family members scoured Khost's dust-doused streets for days. Village elders contacted Taliban commanders in the area who were wont to kidnap government workers, but they had never heard of the young man. Even the governor got involved, ordering his police to round up nettlesome criminal gangs that sometimes preyed on young bazaar-goers for ransom."

The rental breakdown

The American Prospect
by Monica Potts

01/28/10

In the 1990s, federal home-ownership policy shifted from making home-ownership available to the middle class to subsidizing home-ownership for almost everyone. In the process, renters were implicitly denigrated and federal spending allocated to support them fell. The push for home-ownership began under President Bill Clinton and reached a crescendo under President George W. Bush and his ownership [sic] society. … In Bush’s America, home-ownership was not only an unalloyed good but was imbued with a sense of moral imperative; good Americans owned homes. … But a longer-term problem also needed addressing: the shrinking stock of affordable rental housing, and the growing number of low-income renters who needed assistance...

Hire und Fire in der Leiharbeit

8. April 2010

The value of government surveillance of citizens

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

01/27/10

It’s amusing to watch U.S. officials protest the Chinese government’s surveillance of its own citizens. After all, isn’t it the U.S. government that secretly and illegally conspired with private telecom companies to record telephone conversations of private American citizens? And isn’t it the U.S. government that secured both civil and criminal immunity for the telecoms’ decision to sell out the privacy of their customers to the feds?

SOTU: The night of magical thinking

Orange County Register
by staff

01/27/10

President Barack Obama’s first State of the Union address answered the big question pundits were asking resoundingly. In the face of setbacks and growing opposition, in the face of the cap-and-trade energy bill being considered effectively dead, in the face of the loss of a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, in the face of increasing opposition to the health-insurance reform proposal that has yet to take final shape, would the president modulate his agenda to take account of a political climate that has changed radically since he took office a year ago, or would he double-down on the program of increasing the size, scope and responsibility of government? He chose to double-down… One might view this as admirable determination to stick by a program, or one might view it as stubbornness, defiance, even, dare we say it, a touch of arrogance...

SOTU: I will micromanage your life

Fox Business News
by John Stossel

01/28/10

It’s so sad to watch the State of the Union. I’m reading his speech as he reads it nearly word for word on the teleprompters. The president makes endless promises while Congress sycophantically applauds. It’s as if he’s saying, ‘We’re the magic politicians and we can solve all your problems. I will cut that deficit that I inherited from President Bush but simultaneously cut taxes for all of you! I will give you a new jobs bill: green jobs, subsidized speedy trains, hand-outs for small business, tax credits for big business.’ And then Congress applauds itself for spending more of your money. But we already have an idea of what this will really do: enrich accountants and tax lawyers. We’ve seen it in those stimulus ‘tax cuts’ he bragged about...

Tuning out the State of the Union

Washington Examiner
by Gene Healy

01/26/10

Tomorrow night, an embattled President Obama will deliver his 2010 State of the Union. He originally wanted to give it on Feb. 2, but — adding to a string of recent indignities — had to yield after irate ‘Lost’ fans made clear they wouldn’t put up with their season premiere getting pre-empted by a lousy presidential speech. ‘Lost’ is a silly show — a six-year-long ‘Twilight Zone’ episode doomed to end in disappointment. But you can hardly blame Americans for preferring it to the SOTU, a dull and tacky spectacle that celebrates our retreat from limited, constitutional government...

Year of the Rat — I mean, census

Campaign For Liberty
by Becky Akers

02/02/10

The Census is indeed a mistake, not only in its concept but in the phrasing: given the latitude of ‘in such Manner as they shall by Law direct,’ it’s hard to argue that any question bureaucrats ask, whether via mail, phone, or personal visits, violates the Constitution once legislation authorizes it. Indeed, that document’s elasticity enables the Census Bureau to justify even its annual ’surveys’ by claiming they help with its gargantuan, decennial task...

The census: Inquiring minds want to know a lot

Foundation for Economic Education
by Lawrence W. Reed

written 05/00; posted 02/08/10

What the federal bureaucracy calls ‘the largest peacetime mobilization effort in U.S. history’ is now underway. It’s the 2000 census — and if you’re an American citizen, it’s got a few questions for you. As many as 53, in fact. America’s founders felt it was important enough to know how many people lived in the country that they wrote a requirement for a census every ten years into the third paragraph of Article I, Section 2, of the Constitution...

Today’s census no longer just counts people

Hawaii Reporter

The Census Bureau’s propaganda machine is in full gear! The press releases and advertisements tell us that the 2010 census is a national ‘civic event.’ By answering just ten questions in ten minutes you ‘help determine how more than $400 billion in federal funds are distributed.’ And if you are lucky enough to receive the more intrusive American Community Survey — formerly the census long form — you allegedly assist in everything from job training for veterans to improving education for disabled children...

Obama’s “train wreck” ahead

Human Events
by Donald Lambro

01/27/10

Arthur Laffer, creator of the Laffer Curve that showed how low tax rates boost economic growth, is warning anyone who will listen that the economy is headed for a ‘train wreck’ in 2011 that will make the current recession look tame by comparison. The famed economist, whose supply-side, tax-cutting policies enacted by President Reagan in 1981 put the economy on a record-breaking, 25-year economic trajectory of growth and prosperity, is telling Americans not to be lulled by sporadic signs of growth this year, because the economy is headed for a sharper decline next year when tax rates are expected to jump sharply, sending the economy into a new tailspin...

A five-point plant to save America, Haiti and the world

J. Neil Schulman @ Rational Review
by J. Neil Schulman

01/27/10

The United States of America as a geo-political entity is doomed. That sector of the American economy tied to the entitlements and obligations of its federal and state governments — and whose capital and obligations are calculated in terms of a dollar issued by its secretive central bank — is ‘upside down.’ Its debt and obligations far exceed the capital owned by and current productive capacity of its people. The two alternatives, when reduced to essentials, come down to either a bankruptcy involving a repudiation of debts and entitlements — which means some people are going to be thrown to the wolves, and many will actually die — or a bankruptcy involving a reorganization that can lead to a real recovery...
