Firms Defraud Government but Get New US Contracts

Larry Margasak: The Associated Press: "Companies that defrauded the United States and jeopardized American lives received new government work despite rulings designed to stop them from receiving federal contracts, government investigators report. Payments went to a company whose president tried to sell nuclear bomb parts to North Korea, a company that jeopardized lives on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, and a seller of body armor that the Air Force said was defective."

Mobile phone mast could help residents block development

Saturday, February 28, 2009, 20:00

by Dave Burke

dave.burke@essnmedia.co.uk

A mobile phone mast has given residents new hope that their opposition to a block of flats can still win the day – even though a planning inquiry has backed the scheme.

The inspector, David Hogger, has given the go-ahead for 10 new two-bedroom homes in Lower Barn Road, even though Croydon Council denied permission.

But residents are gearing up for a new fight as Mr Hogger also ruled a nearby 15-metre phone mast is too close to the new development and must be moved before construction of the flats begins.

Doomed to Repeat History in Afghanistan?

Joe Galloway, McClatchy Newspapers: "If the new American team has some new ideas about how to succeed in Afghanistan, now would be the time to lay them out. Nothing that Alexander the Great, Queen Victoria or Leonid Brezhnev tried in their attempts to subdue the quarrelsome Afghan tribes worked, and nothing we've tried in the last eight years has, either. While we're waiting for a new strategy, perhaps we should break out some old Kipling: 'When wounded and left on Afghanistan's plain.' 'And the women come out to cut up your remains ....' Etc., etc."

Bundesverfassungsgericht setzt Verschärfung des Versammlungsrechts in Bayern außer Kraft

Karlsruhe stoppt "anlasslose Datenbevorratung"

Why Obama’s economic plan will fail

TCS Daily
by John L. Chapman

02/25/09

The recent passage of the $787 billion malapropism known as the ‘American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009′ on Friday the 13th was full of irony. Beyond the portentous date of passage, or its questionable moniker, was the ugly process leading to the confirming Senate vote. While promising ‘unprecedented responsibility, transparency, and accountability’ in securing passage of the largest ad hoc spending bill in U.S. history, the Obama team instead permitted their Congressional allies to rush through a 1,000-page monstrosity with no effective deliberation, no promised prior posting, and no lawmaker coming close to fully reading the pork-laden bill. But the reaction of President Obama was, itself, the ultimate incongruity. For even as Mr. Obama hailed its passage as a ‘major milestone on the road to recovery’ which would lead to ‘3.5 million new or saved jobs in two years,’ the bill in fact guarantees the failure of his economic program, a prolonged downturn, and a golden opportunity for the revival of his political opponents...

What’s government giving up for Lent?

Nolan Chart
by Benjamin W. Mankowski, Sr.

02/25/09

Today is Ash Wednesday, and for millions of Catholics worldwide, that means the beginning of Lent. That also means a lot of complaining about not being allowed to eat meat today and for the next six Fridays, and yes, guilty as charged, I did a lot of that in my younger years. There is a certain irony to that, as Lenten discipline used to have more strict guidelines centuries or even decades ago, and there was a lot less complaining. … Government could stand to learn a little bit about sacrifice, especially when politicians of both major parties lecture us about it on a regular basis. Ever since the New Deal and even before, government programs have been introduced to get us out of economic downturns. The problem is, once those programs are in place, they usually prove to be permanent, though any perceived economic benefits are not. We are told we need this program or that agency in place to keep the economy strong...

The Department of Homegrown Security

Chip Ward, TomDispatch.com: "Common to sudden catastrophes is the shock of finding the world upside down. The water is suddenly on top instead of under; the rumbling earth swallows houses and spits out lava; the mud wall slides down from above; the flames roar up; the wind spins; the tower topples. In an instant, everything is broken and nothing works. What you relied upon is gone."
