PLANS for a 50ft mobile phone mast have been proposed for Seaton Rugby Club.

Telefónica O2 wants to erect the mast to improve network coverage.

The company has not formally applied to Allerdale council for planning permission and Seaton Parish Council will discuss the proposal on Monday.

Gary Warwick, 65, of nearby Fernleigh Drive, said: “I would say no. We are already having to look at windmills everywhere and I certainly don’t want to be able to see any masts. Who is going to want to look at that? We don’t even know what these things do to you.”

Kathleen Warwick, 64, said: “I wouldn’t want to be able to see an obstruction like that.”

PETITIONS are being raised after mobile phone giant applied to place a mast close to two schools in Lydiate.

Vodafone has submitted a planning application to Sefton Council to put the 12m mast in Southport Road, outside the Weld Blundell Arms.

Only a short distance away are two primary schools.

Headteacher of Lydiate Primary, David Batchelor said: “As the crow flies, this school is only 100m away from the Weld Blundell.

More than 450 people have objected to plans for a mobile phone mast near three schools.

Telefonica O2 has submitted proposals for a 12m mast and base station on the corner of Lexden Road and Norman Way in Colchester - near to St Mary's, Colchester County High School for Girls and St Benedict's College.

As well as concerns over its proximity to the schools, other objectors have protested on the grounds of potential health risks, its size and the impact on the nearby conservation area.

Teresa Fox, teacher and governor at County High, is just one of those who have written to Colchester Council.

She said: “As a school, we are honouring the Stewart Report, which suggests a cautionary approach to siting phone masts near children until long term studies have been carried out.

„Leider liefert auch die Demonstration vom 28.03.09 erneut genügend Belege dafür, daß die Frankfurter Polizei (bzw. ihre Einsatzleitung) nicht gewillt ist, das Grundrecht auf Versammlungsfreiheit zu respektieren. Vielmehr zeigt das Polizeiverhalten, daß Versammlungen nicht nur durch ein völlig überzogenes und martialisches Auftreten der Polizei diskreditiert werden, sondern auch immer wieder offen repressiv und in schikanöser Art und Weise die Rechte von Versammlungsteilnehmern mißachtet und eingeschränkt werden. Da viele nur jeweils kurze Beschäftigungszeiten geltend machen können, besteht häufig nicht einmal Anspruch auf Arbeitslosengeld. Der mögliche Protest der Marginalisierten gilt den Regierungsparteien wohl als geringeres Risiko als sein Übergreifen auf die Stammbelegschaften, die mit der Kurzarbeiterregelung beruhigt werden sollen…“

Mindestlohn "light" für Leiharbeiter - Gewerkschaften protestieren

„Im Rahmen des Konjunkturpakets II hat sich der Koalitionsausschuss auf einen neuen Anlauf für einen Mindestlohn in der Leiharbeitsbranche geeinigt. Der Kompromiss stieß sofort auf Kritik der Gewerkschaften. In der Langfassung der Koalitionsbeschlüsse zum Thema "Einsatz für Arbeit" ist der Leiharbeit ein eigenes Kapital gewidmet. Darin heißt es: "Für die Wiedereinstellung von Arbeitnehmern in der Leiharbeit werden Zuschüsse zur Qualifizierung in den Jahren 2009 und 2010 aus dem Haushalt der BA zur Verfügung gestellt. Wir wollen bis Ende Januar ein Gesetzgebungsverfahren einleiten, das für die Zeitarbeit im Arbeitnehmerüberlassungsgesetz (AÜG) eine Lohnuntergrenze etabliert, die die Tarifautonomie wahrt." Beobachter werten diese Festlegung als eine Entscheidung gegen die Aufnahme der Leiharbeitsbranche in das Arbeitnehmerentsendegesetz. Thank you for reporting again on the Bushey Heath Phone Mast protest and thank you for referring to WEEP and particularly, the scientific evidence that links mobile phone radiation to adverse health effects.

There is one thing in your article that I wanted to correct. You referred to W.E.E.P.as an - 'anti-mast group'. This is not correct, we have little concern about masts and we are not anti mast. We are extremely concerned about the electro magnetic radiation emitted by antennas (some on masts) and our concern is based on strong scientific evidence ( http://www.bioinitiative.org ) . We are also highly concerned about other forms of electrical and electromagnetic pollution harming people, animals and the environment.

WEEP (The Canadian Initiative against ) - Wireless Electrical and Electromagnetic Pollution, cares little, if politicians are stupid enough to allow masts that 'blight' highways, towns, cities, the countryside and in particular most scenic high points around the world.

If the antennas on masts did not emit carcinogenic radiation, if they did not affect composition of blood, if they did not affect the heart, the brain and other internal body systems, if they did not harm birds, bees and the environment and if they did not cause what may be the biggest threat to life on earth, WEEP would not complain about all the ugly masts, which have sprouted up over the past twenty years.

WEEP is not opposed to any new technology that is proven to be safe. Microwave radiation (from many sources) is not safe and research over many years has been proven it to be highly dangerous to human health.

TWO decisions on phone masts in Pontypool were deferred for site visits.

A decision on a 17.5m mobile phone mast in Pontypool was deferred for members of Torfaen council’s planning committee.

Residents living near the site are opposed to the application made by O2 to build a telecommunications mast on land at Wiltan Factory Premises, Estate Road,Pontnewynydd.

Sixty letters of objection were submitted from residents living in 24 properties at Hanbury Road, Merchants Hill and Elled Road and from one industrial premises in Pontypool North Industrial Estate.

Concerns raised include the impact on health, depreciation of the value of homes, visual impact and previous refusals of masts at the site. Pontypool Community Council is also opposed to the plan.

New research on maternal care puts the environment and epigenetic potential at centre stage of how organisms shape their lives and the lives of their offspring

Neither genetic nor environmental determinism rules

Is it our genetic makeup or the environment that determines who we are? Startling new research results on how maternal care has lasting influence in the offspring’s behaviour that perpetuates for generations [1] are saying that’s not even the right question to ask.

Evidence has been emerging since the early 1990s that lack of parental care or childhood abuse can contribute to subsequent criminal behaviour [2]. A study sponsored by the US National Institute of Justice showed that a child who experienced neglect or physical abuse was 53 percent more likely to be arrested as a juvenile and 38 percent more as an adult compared with a child who was not neglected or abused. Another study found that 68.4 percent of male inmates from a New York State correctional institution reported childhood abuse or neglect: 71.2 percent for violent offenders and 61.8 percent for non-violent offenders.

It has been estimated that up to 70 percent of abusive parents were themselves abused [3, 4], and 20 to 30 percent of abused infants are likely to become abusers. These findings in humans are replicated in experiments on primates [1].

Clearly, the environment plays a large role, but it does not absolutely determine whether children will grow up to be criminals, any more than their genetic makeup determines what they will become. More importantly, changing the environment can often undo the harm that individuals, or their parents, have experienced in early life, as we shall see.

Myth of genetic determinism perpetrated in academia

Mainstream genetics research during the decades since the discovery of the DNA double helix in 1953 has focussed on identifying ‘genes’ or ‘genetic predisposition’ for every ‘trait’, real or imaginary [5] (see Living with the Fluid Genome, ISIS publication). Imaginary traits are rife in the hybrid discipline of ‘evolutionary psychology’, long dedicated to inventing stories on ‘selective advantage’ for each of the ‘traits’ so that the corresponding gene could become ‘fixed’ in the population by neo-Darwinian natural selection.

Another hybrid discipline ‘behavioural genetics’, formerly dedicated to studies based on identical twins, began identifying DNA (gene) markers for behaviour; and indeed claimed to have found one for increased tendency towards violent behaviour in boys who experienced maltreatment in childhood [6]. The gene encoding the enzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) – involved in the metabolism of neurotransmitters - exists in two variants, one expressing high activity, the other, low activity. While all boys in the study showed increased “disposition towards violence” if they received maltreatment as children, those with low enzyme activity appeared to show a greater increase. The researchers claimed a weak residual effect due to the low activity MAOA, while conceding the large effect of the environment. But even this weak genetic predisposition soon faded away as more data became available [7].

Behavioural geneticists are not the only ones wasting time and resources chasing ‘will o’ the wisp’ gene markers. The project to map genetic predisposition to diseases was the main rationale for the $3 billion Human Genome Project that decades later, delivered next to nothing; basically because it is not genomic DNA but epigenetic environmental influences that overwhelmingly affect our health and well- being [8] (see From Genomics to Epigenomics SiS 41).
