In a sworn affidavit to a district court in Washington, Gates says the US authorities have provided Binyam Mohamed's lawyers and the British government with all the information they possess relating to Mohamed's treatment while held in secret prisons. Gates declared his affidavit to be the truth 'under penalty of perjury.'"

Amy Goodman, Democracy Now!: "A top Republican internet strategist who was set to testify in a case alleging election tampering in 2004 in Ohio has died in a plane crash. Mike Connell was the chief IT consultant to Karl Rove and created websites for the Bush and McCain electoral campaigns. He also set up the official Ohio state election website reporting the 2004 presidential election returns. Connell was reportedly an experienced pilot. He died instantly Friday night when his private plane crashed in a residential neighborhood near Akron, Ohio."

Vom 6. – 8. NATO-Gipfel April 2009

Am 3. und 4. April wollen sich die Vertreter der NATO-Länder ein weiteres mal treffen. Dieser Gipfel soll zugleich die Jubelfeier zum 60. Jahrestag werden. Aber noch wichtiger für diejenigen die sich der NATO widersetzen ist die Tatsache, dass an einer neuen Strategie, neuen Aufgaben für die NATO gearbeitet werden soll, der "Strategy for an uncertain world". Mit jährlich mehr Steuergeldern wird diese private Inszenierung militärischer Machtpolitik im Bayerischen Hof finanziert. Mit dem neuen Leiter Wolfgang Ischinger, "Generalbevollmächtigter für Regierungsbeziehungen" der Allianz Versicherung, ist die Verbindung zum Finanzkapital augenscheinlich. Tausende Beschäftigte in Deutschland, die um ihre Arbeitsplätze bei der Allianz und anderen Banken bangen, die 87 Allianz-Filialleiter in Südkorea, die wegen ihres Streiks entlassen wurden und die zwei Streikführer, die im Gefängnis landeten, machen klar, welche Sicherheit hier gemeint ist: Nicht die Sicherheit für uns – sondern vor uns! Zahlreiche Kriegsgegner zur "Sicherheitskonferenz" in München erwartet

Die Gegner der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz bringen sich in Stellung. Mehrere tausend Kriegsgegner wollen am Samstag in der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt auf die Straße gehen, wie der Mitinitiator des Aktionsbündnisses gegen die Sicherheitskonferenz, Claus Schreer, am Mittwoch (4. Februar) ankündigte. Das Angebot zum Dialog oder zur Teilnahme schlugen die Konferenzgegner aus. Schreer versprach eine "friedliche und machtvolle Demonstration". Vom Kreisverwaltungsreferat der Stadt München seien "keine besonderen Auflagen, außer der üblichen", verhängt worden. Scharf kritisierte er den neuen Leiter der Sicherheitskonferenz, Wolfgang Ischinger. Es sei "einfach nicht wahr", dass es bei der Veranstaltung um Kriegsprävention gehe. Vielmehr gehe es darum, "wie die NATO ihre Kriege betreibt". Ischinger sei "der Weichwäscher der NATO", meint Schreer.

Only the people, by refusing to spend on what they don’t need, can drive prices down. The price of oil may very well be too low right now, but the people are in no mood to seeing it rise. In the same sense, the government may try to jumpstart the economy through inflation and deficits, but if the people refuse to spend the newfound dollars circulating in the economy, prices won’t rise. The people ultimately drive any market. The market is itself a form of democracy. You can withhold your ‘vote’ (i.e., dollars) if you believe something is too expensive. If necessities do see a price rise, you can stop spending on non-necessities. And I suspect this may happen. The country may very well go into a ‘Depression,’ and a President Obama may start desperately grab-bagging for solutions as Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt did from 1929 to 1941. Just because Obama or the Fed makes more money available won’t mean the people will use it...

Public works is stuff — concrete and steel. If Wall Street is going to get hold of public works money, at least they’ll have to work to come up with a twisted scam — it won’t be just ‘injected’ onto their balance sheets. But if we can’t keep that concept of output always uppermos — and the evidence so far is that we can’t — the happy, hopeful sound of public works will be another money pit...

The Fed said on Friday it would offer low-cost three-year funding to any US company investing in securitized consumer loans under the Term Asset-backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF). COUNCILLORS have run up a red flag over plans for a mobile phone mast on Banbridge's Old Newry Road.

Planners have approved the Vodafone UK proposal for a 12m high streetworks pole, three tri-sector shrouded antennae (1.9m high), dish and equipment cabinet on a grass verge some 100m north east of No.2 Thornwood.

But councillors have asked for the matter to be deferred for a month, insisting a better location should be sought.

The request came first from Councillor Junior McCrum at a recent meeting of the council's Public Services Liaison Committee.

The DUP councillor said one of two nearby fields had been zoned for a new Abercorn Primary School.

He didn't think it a good idea, he said, to have a mobile phone mast located so close to a school site.

Washington’s response was panic, then flooding the economy with freshly printed money in hope something positive would happen. Japan made precisely the same gamble when its bubble economy collapsed in the early 1990s. Today, Japan has one of the world’s highest deficits and its economy remains dead in the water. The U.S. economy must be weaned off credit addiction. Pumping billions and billions of dollars into the economy is like mainlining more drugs to a sick junkie. The economy needs a period of cold turkey in which remaining credit bubbles, bad debt and financial distortions are purged. This is called recession, and it’s a vital part of the capitalist free market cycle. Without a period of pain, we can’t restore economic health or sanity. But panicky American politicians plan to spend $8.5 trillion to stave off this necessary, beneficial recession. Their misguided efforts risk igniting a future firestorm of inflation that will be far more dangerous and painful than any recession...

At the same time, if the government intervenes with trillions of dollars in support of failed private businesses — with the money extorted from taxpayers and strings attached to the money — the result signifies a mighty negation of private property. In this situation the government assumes economic responsibility for every individual, even though such an assumption of responsibility is utterly absurd and unrealistic. And yet, despite the absurdities on every side, President Bush excuses himself by saying, -I’ve abandoned free market principles to save the free market system.- Oh ye of little faith! The free market doesn’t need you to save it! Even if it happens to collapse, it will recover if you leave it alone...
