Is this swimming pool Ireland’s biggest cell phone mast?

Health fears over phone masts at pool

The biggest phone mast in Ireland? Herald ie

By Kevin Doyle

Thursday July 31 2008

IS this swimming pool “Ireland’s biggest phone mast”?

Around 50 mobile phone and telecommunication devices on top of a Dublin swimming pool are a “serious health risk” and “an eyesore”, it was claimed today.

The sheer quantity of masts at the Coolock pool is “shocking and scary”, according to Fine Gael TD Terence Flanagan.

“The pool at the Northside Shopping Centre must be the largest phone mast in the country,” he said.

According to Deputy Flanagan there is widespread concern in the area about “the massive cluster of mobile phone masts”.

The pool is used on a daily basis by children and during the school terms a number of local primary schools use it for swimming lessons.

Although there were initially just a few small pieces of equipment on the roof, it has been consistently added to in recent years.

Dublin City Council were unable to confirm exactly how many masts are on the building but locals estimate that there could be as many as 50.

“I was shocked to discover through further investigation that there is an alarming proliferation of mobile phone masts and telecommunication equipment,” said Deputy Flanagan, adding: “There are serious health risks associated with mobile phone masts.”

Bloomberg Sues the Fed for Bailout Disclosure

Charley James, The LA Progressive: "Lost in the wake of Henry Paulson's announcement Wednesday that Treasury is 'changing direction' in how it doles out money in the bank rescue plan is a little-noticed lawsuit filed last Friday by Bloomberg LP, the business news wire service. It is suing the Federal Reserve Board's governors for public records that would answer two simple questions: Who is receiving $2 trillion in Fed loans and what collateral are taxpayers getting to support them? That's trillion, with a 't.' And, yes, as hard as it is to believe, taxpayers don't know the identity of the borrowers to whom they are lending. They also don't know what kind of junk - Stocks? Bonds? Three milk cows and a '69 Camaro? - they are getting to collateralize the federal loans."

Bid for seven mobile masts 'to plug gaps'

Friday, November 14, 2008, 09:14

MOBILE phone giant Vodafone is bidding to install seven new mobile phone masts around Torbay.

The applications, which will be considered by Torbay Council planners on Monday, are to plug gaps in 3G coverage.

The locations are Herbert Road, Hawkins Avenue, St Vincent's Road, Perinville Road, Grafton Road and Warberry Road in Torquay and, in Paignton, at Lammas Lane.

The plan to install a 10-metre-high mock telegraph pole on an area of land sandwiched between Herbert Road, Vicarage Hill and St Matthews Road is the most controversial, sparking 116 objections.

The assaults on constitutional freedoms are bipartisan

A long train of abuses

The American Conservative
by Alexander Cockburn

If there’s one thing defenders of civil liberties know, it’s that assaults on constitutional freedoms are bipartisan. Just as constitutional darkness didn’t first fall with the arrival in the Oval Office of George W. Bush, the shroud will not lift with his departure and the entry of President Barack Obama. As atrocious as the Bush record on civil liberties has been, there’s no more eager and self-righteous hand reaching out to the Bill of Rights to drop it into the shredder than that of a liberal intent on legislating freedom... Planners reject phone mast plan near play area

7:40am Friday 14th November 2008

PLANS to place a phone mast measuring more than 12 metres close to a children’s play area have been thrown out by councillors.

Mobile phone giant O2 applied for the 12.5 metre radio base to be placed on Warrington Road, Penketh.

The matter was brought before the borough council’s development control committee last Wednesday after Penketh Parish Council objected to the plans.

Clr Fiona Bruce, of Penketh and Cuerdley, said there seemed to be a precedent for masts to be placed on the area as four were already sited close to Warrington Road.

November) in Düsseldorf.

Krach in bayerischer Koalition wegen heimlichen Online-Durchsuchungen

Colwood considering tougher tower bylaws

By Amy Dove - Goldstream News Gazette

Published: November 13, 2008 1:00 PM

Residents fighting to remove transmission towers from their neighbourhoods may have found a crack in the industry’s policy quagmire.

“I am so optimistic that we have found the Achilles heel here,” said Triangle Mountain resident Sharon Noble. “Everyone believes all the power lies with the federal government, but it’s not true.”

Colwood is forming a task force to review the current bylaws and determine if there is a need for further protections. Within that discussion, staff will look into a health bylaw dictating the level of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) people could be exposed to. Health Canada’s Safety Code Six is the national standard, however, it allows radiation levels exceeding many other countries, Noble said. While cell and wireless technology is still relatively new, research is making links between exposure and certain cancers, sleep disorders and other ailments.

Angry Neighbors Protest Cell Phone Towers

By Richard Brenneman

Thursday November 13, 2008

Neighbors worried about cell phone antenna radiation and angry at city officials who have allowed it in their neighborhoods poured out their frustrations at the Berkeley Planning Commission meeting last week.

Planning commissioners listened, questioned, then decided to hold off on any decision for another two weeks—in part because of a recent federal appellate court ruling.

But whatever the commission decides, Deputy Planning Director Wendy Cosin said she is obliged to make a recommendation to the City Council in January.

That deadline was imposed in the settlement of a lawsuit brought against the city 15 months ago by Verizon Wireless, which obligated the city to consider—but not adopt—amendments to the existing ordinance by mid-January.

And while angry neighbors around two antenna concentrations along Shattuck Avenue in the Gourmet Ghetto on the Northside and in South Berkeley are following developments with fierce concentration, a city councilmember and Berkeley’s most prominent local developer are awaiting grilling under oath.

Anger at mast proposal

Nov 13 2008 by Ruth Kearney, Glamorgan Gazette

RESIDENTS are up in arms at plans for a mobile phone mast outside their homes.

Vodafone wants to erect a 12m telegraph pole with three 3G antennae, a cabinet and an electric meter on land adjacent to Heol yr Afon, Wildmill.

Margaret McIntyre, of Tairfelin, lives opposite the site where the pole would be erected.

She said: “The first I knew about the plans was when my neighbour told me.

“She had received a letter from the council, but as far as I know, no one on this street has received one.”

She said health risks and visual intrusion to the area are the major concerns.

Flagpole phone mast in Langton Green rejected

Thursday, November 13, 2008, 14:30

The prospect of a phone mast disguised as a flagpole in Langton Green has been rejected for a second time.

Mobile phone giant O2's appeal against their refused application for three antennas made to look like a flagpole on the Spa Hotel, Mount Ephraim, was dismissed.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council had refused permission in May and the communications company appealed the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.

But the inspectorate Clive Hughes this week declined, stating the planned flagpole was "too bulky", "an unfortunate addition to the roof", "detracts from the appearance of the building", and gave an "unfortunate and harmful impact on the skyline".

Meeting invite over mobile phone mast

A mobile phone mast could be built in Halesowen sparking fury from residents who have been invited to a public meeting. Phone company O2 wants to put up a mast in Bassnage Road.

Campaigners fighting the plans are invited to the meeting next Thursday at Lutley Community Centre, in Brookwillow Road, at 7pm. People are objecting, saying the antennae would be near their homes and that they are worried about the potential health risks.

Yes, we can? – But we won’t!

Bailing out the ruling class

The Partial Observer
by James Leroy Wilson

11/13/08

[T]he bailout solution is attractive to the Political Class, because it increases their power over our lives. But their mismanagement can’t go on forever. Ask the French Ruling Class of 1789, or the Russian Ruling Class of 1917 if, in retrospect, they would have done things differently. Our own Ruling Class not only do not know what is in the national interest, they don’t even know what is in their own best interests. That’s why they resist tax reform. Reform the tax system by making it less intrusive, and we could revive the economy. When the economy grows strong, the ruling class will benefit by getting the credit. As a Taoist might say, to increase power, you must give it up...

Politicizing markets to rob the poor and reward the rich

Classically Liberal
by CLS

11/13/08

Numerous historians and economists, from all sides of the political spectrum, have noted that Big Business is able to use the Regulatory State to protect itself from competition and to transfer wealth from taxpayers to themselves. What we have is an Iron Triangle of Interests which harms the economy and make all, but the favored few, worse off as a result. The most obvious partner in this Iron Triangle of Interests is Big Business itself. These corporations use the political process to buy influence with politicians. And politicians are very anxious to sell that influence to the various bidders. Of course, when it comes to purchasing influence with the political elite it is always the rich and powerful who are able to do so...

The trust factor in mortgage bailouts

Christian Science Monitor
by staff

11/13/08

By now, most Americans have lost track of who is being rescued by Washington. AIG, yes. Lehman, no. Fannie Mae, yes. GM, maybe. Still at the heart of this mess, however, are troubled mortgages. The latest plan to help homeowners strikes a right note. It aims to restore a key and illusive factor in business contracts: trust. Simply throwing taxpayer dollars at problems such as rising home foreclosures or sinking US automakers doesn’t solve the fundamental issue that certain industries have suffered a breakdown of confidence over many years. Americans feel deeply betrayed. Why should taxpayers, for instance, now trust GM, Ford, and Chrysler to make vehicles as consistently reliable and affordable as foreign competitors if they are handed billions? The evidence is not yet in. Simply ’saving jobs’ doesn’t make sense if those jobs still make cars many buyers don’t want. The same is true for troubled mortgages. How can government help fix the broken bonds between lenders and borrowers?

Pending Home Sales Fall Sharply Outside of the West

Dean Baker, Truthout: "The decline in mortgage applications shows that the problem is not the credit crunch. The National Association of Realtors' pending home sales index fell 4.6 percent for the country as a whole in September. However, this decline was dampened by a 3.7 percent increase in the West. Sales fell by 0.7 percent in the Midwest, 7.9 percent in the South, and 16.8 percent in the Northeast. September sales in the Northeast were the lowest on record for this index, which only dates back to 2001."

Prescription Drugs Kill Three Times as Many Americans as Illegal Drugs

David Gutierrez, Natural News: "A report by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission has concluded that prescription drugs have outstripped illegal drugs as a cause of death. An analysis of 168,900 autopsies conducted in Florida in 2007 found that three times as many people were killed by legal drugs as by cocaine, heroin and all methamphetamines put together. According to state law enforcement officials, this is a sign of a burgeoning prescription drug abuse problem."

Goodbye and Good Riddance

Paul Waldman, The American Prospect: "After eight years of President Bush, we almost don't know how to function without him - almost. But before we move on, we should pause to remember just what we're leaving behind. Goodbye, we can say at last, to the most powerful man in the world being such a ridiculous buffoon, incapable of stringing together two coherent sentences. Goodbye to cringing with dread every time our president steps onto the world stage, sure he'll say or do something to embarrass us all. Goodbye to being represented by a man who embodies everything our enemies want the people of the world to believe about America - that we are ignorant, cruel, and only care about foreign countries when we decide to stomp on them."

Protesters angry at phone mast plan

Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 20:53

A GROUP of residents have gathered to protest against plans to site a mobile phone mast next to a school and houses.

Plymouth City Council is considering whether the 12-metre mast, which Vodafone would like to erect in Plympton, needs planning permission.

Yesterday concerned residents gathered at the site, on the corner of Redwood Drive and Glen Road, to urge others to object to the proposal.

Richard Madge, 68, lives on adjacent Hickory Drive. He said: "We know the health issues can't be proven one way or the other, in the same way they couldn't prove that smoking was bad for you.

A short honeymoon

AntiWar.Com

by Alan Bock

11/12/08

I suspect that Barack Obama, despite the historic character of his election, will have a shorter honeymoon than many. The economic problems triggered by the government-induced housing bubble have mostly to do with the injection of too much inflationary funny money into the economy, so injecting more, while it may create a temporary sensation of relief, will hardly fix the problems. Perhaps more importantly, however, he faces foreign policy challenges — largely hangovers from the eight years of Bush foolishness, but also some that would have been apparent anyway — that he seems to have little or no idea how to approach intelligently or constructively. The most obvious example is his apparent determination to ramp up the war in Afghanistan, already the graveyard of several empires...

With Iran, Obama Needs More Carrot, Less Stick

It comes just two months after a council rejected the proposal.

Phone company O2 has submitted plans to Kettering Council to replace its existing mobile phone mast at the Ise Garden Centre in Warkton Lane, Kettering, and to add three extra antennae.

But nearby residents have vowed to fight the plans for the third time in three years, claiming the mast could have adverse effects on their long-term health.
