ANXIOUS residents are battling plans for a mobile phone mast on their doorstep.

Communications giant Vodafone has lodged an application to install a mast tower at the corner of Barley Lane and Eastern Avenue, Chadwell Heath.

But neighbours of the site, which already houses an Orange phone mast, have raised health concerns.

Joanna Lopes, of Freshwell Avenue, Chadwell Heath, raised health concerns about the mast, which is close to Newbridge School, Barley Lane, Goodmayes, Little Heath School, Hainault Road, and King George Hospital, Barley Lane, Goodmayes.

Panikmache statt seriösem Krisenmanagement?

In der vergangenen Woche hat die Bundesregierung in beispielloser Weise ein 500- Milliarden-Rettungspaket für die Banken durchs Parlament gejagt. Das Paket müsse vor Börsenöffnung am Montag geschnürt sein, sonst drohe ein Finanzkollaps, so die Bundesregierung. Dazu erklärt das Mitglied des Parteivorstandes Axel Troost, gleichzeitig finanzpolitischer Sprecher der Bundestagsfraktion:

Merkwürdig ist, dass außer der BayernLB bisher keine Bank das Paket nutzen will und der befürchtete Zusammenbruch ebenfalls ausgeblieben ist. Entweder hat die Bundesregierung das Parlament bewusst getäuscht und mit einem vorgeschobenen Krisenszenario die angemessenen demokratischen Beratungen unterdrückt. Oder der Bundesfinanzminister hat die Lage wieder einmal komplett falsch eingeschätzt und die Gefahren dramatisch überschätzt, was erneut belegen würde, dass Peer Steinbrück nicht die geeignete Person ist, um die Krise zu bewältigen. Oder wurde das Paket gar auf die BayernLB zugeschnitten, um das Totalversagen des CSU-Filzes aufzufangen? DIE LINKE lehnt die Überlegungen zu einer Fusion der BayernLB mit der LBBW zu einer großen Landesbank Süd ab. Wie die WestLB muss die BayernLB aus dem Finanzkasino aussteigen und ihre spekulativen Geschäfte dichtmachen. Die drohenden Probleme bei der Kreditversorgung der Realwirtschaft sind die perfekte Gelegenheit, sich endlich wieder auf das solide Bankgeschäft zu besinnen. Dafür brauchen wir aber keine Mega-Landesbank mit fusionierter Kasino-Abteilung, sondern eine seriöse und leistungsfähige Landesbank mit regionaler Verankerung. Vorher muss allerdings der CSU-Filz ausgemistet werden.

You may not have noticed it, but a couple of weeks ago, the New York Times slipped in a story that completely contradicted a narrative that it had been building up for two straight months, one that was leading America into another war — a so-called ‘New Cold War.’ The article exposed the awful authoritarian reality of Georgia’s so-called democracy, painting a dark picture of President Mikhail Saakashvili’s rule that repudiated the fairy tale that the Times and everyone else in the major media had been pushing ever since war broke out in South Ossetia in early August. That fairy tale went like this: Russia (evil) invaded Georgia (good) for no reason whatsoever except that Georgia was free. Putin hates freedom, and Saakashvili is the ‘democratically elected leader’ of a ’small, democratic country.’ Yes, it was only a month ago that we were stupid and crazy enough to think that the United States had no choice but to launch a costly new cold war against a nuclear power, even though we still haven’t closed the deal on a couple of mini-wars against Division-III opponents, and we were on the verge of bankruptcy...

When the Republican Party decided to coordinate expenses with John McCain’s presidential campaign, who knew it would be color coordinated. The Republican National Committee spent about $150,000 on clothing, hair styling, makeup and other ‘campaign accessories’ in September for the McCain campaign after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin joined the ticket as his running mate. The McCain campaign now says the clothing will go to a ‘charitable purpose’ after the campaign. The expenses include $75,062 spent at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis Minn., and $41,850 in St. Louis in early September. The committee also reported spending $4,100 for makeup and hair consulting. The expenses were first reported by Politico.com.

The communications’ giant withdrew its application to install a mobile phone mast on Manchester Road, close to the Shell Service Station, following objections from Ian Davies and his neighbours on Bluebell Close – and, bizarrely, the Bat Society.

Residents sent letters of protest to Macclesfield Borough Council on the grounds that the mast did not meet Government guidelines and was too close to Marlborough Primary School and Tytherington High School.
