Phone mast campaigners celebrate victory

2:00pm Tuesday 21st October 2008

RESIDENTS who feared three phone masts would be built outside their homes are breathing a sigh of relief.

People living along Rodford Way, in Dodington, were horrified when mobile company Vodafone submitted plans for a 10-metre high mast in September.

But they are celebrating victory this week after South Gloucestershire Council refused the proposals out of hand.

Campaign leader Mandy Sainsbury, who lives in Blaisdon off Rodford Way, said: "The battle is won but the war is not over yet."

Residents were particularly upset because they already have to put up with a giant O2 receptor and expect phone company 3 to put up a mast imminently.

During a campaign against the Vodafone proposals, homeowners launched a scathing attack on the council for ignoring previous agreements to consider mobile phone mast applications in much more detail.

Bush Decides to Keep Guantanamo Open

Steven Lee Myers, The New York Times: "Despite his stated desire to close the American prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, President Bush has decided not to do so, and never considered proposals drafted in the State Department and the Pentagon that outlined options for transferring the detainees elsewhere, according to senior administration officials. Mr. Bush’s top advisers held a series of meetings at the White House this summer after a Supreme Court ruling in June cast doubt on the future of the American detention center. But Mr. Bush adopted the view of his most hawkish advisers that closing Guantanamo would involve too many legal and political risks to be acceptable, now or any time soon, the officials said."

Court Restrains Zain From Erecting Mast

The High Court in Tema has restrained Zain Ghana Limited, a mobile telecommunications company, from constructing a phone mast at a house at Adjiringano, a suburb of Accra. The order, which took effect from Friday, October 17, 2008 is valid for 10 days.

The court gave the order following an application for an order of interim injunction to restrain the company from constructing the phone mast at No.14 Manor Valley Road which was filed on behalf of some residents of Adjiringano by Mr Kojo Graham, the Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Civil Liberties (CHUCIL), an NGO.

According to the residents, checks from regulatory bodies had proved that the company was putting up the mast without the requisite approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), among other regulatory bodies.

They further argued that phone masts and towers were internationally known and reported, through scientific research and case studies, to be sources of harmful radioactive and electromagnetic emissions against individuals and communities living near and within the environs of erected phone masts and towers.

Problems with the $750,000,000,000 bailout

FreedomWorks
by John M. Virginia

10/20/08

The main problem is the cost of homes are too high and too much of a percentage of a family’s income. The prices of homes must come down. Has anyone questioned that these bad home loans out there are partially due to the cost of the home? I work with a homebuilder in Northern Virginia. The land costs are what are driving the cost of homes up so much. This homebuilder was paying $450,000 for each lot that they were building townhouses in Ashburn, Virginia. This lot price drives the finished cost of a 3 bedroom townhouse to $600,000 or more...

Why the Republicans must Be defeated this year

Fox News
by Radley Balko

10/20/08

I grew up in a particularly conservative part of the already conservative state of Indiana. I voted for Bob Dole in 1996 and George Bush in 2000, generally because — though I’m not a conservative (I’m a libertarian) — I’d always thought the GOP was the party of limited government. By 2002, I was less sure of that. … Since then, ‘fed up’ has soured to ‘given up.’ … This isn’t to say that Barack Obama would be any better. Government would undoubtedly grow under his watch. And from my libertarian perspective, he has been increasingly disappointing even on the issues where he’s supposed to be good. … While I’m not thrilled at the prospect of an Obama administration (especially with a friendly Congress), the Republicans still need to get their clocks cleaned in two weeks, for a couple of reasons...

Fear has profoundly changed us

Miami Herald
by Leonard Pitts Jr.

10/20/08

Fear, which had cut through us like a hot poker, became instead a low-grade fever, ambient noise, wallpaper, something you feel without feeling, hear without hearing, see without seeing. Then you look up one day and realize how profoundly that fear has changed your world. People are imprisoned without charges or access to attorneys, and it’s routine. People are surveilled, their reading habits studied, their telephone usage logged, and it’s commonplace. People, including children, end up on a secret list of those who are not allowed to fly, nobody will tell you why, there is no appeal, and it’s ordinary. We swallow lies like candy, nod sagely at babblespeak, and it’s unexceptional. Torture is inflicted with White House approval, the president lies about it and it’s just another Tuesday...

McCain Employing GOP Operative Accused of Voter Registration Fraud

Sam Stein, The Huffington Post: "John McCain's campaign has directed $175,000 to the firm of a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states. According to campaign finance records, a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the California Republican Party, made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of 'registering voters.' The managing partner of that firm is Nathan Sproul, a renowned GOP operative who has been investigated on multiple occasions for suppressing Democratic voter turnout, throwing away registration forms and even, once, spearheading efforts to get Ralph Nader on ballots so as to hinder the Democratic ticket."

Propaganda in the US rests mostly in what is not said, but rather assumed. McCain, Obama and the Psychology of Decisions

John P. Briggs, MD, and J.P. Briggs, PhD, Truthout: "For the past eight years, American voters afforded themselves the rare opportunity to observe a president who claims to be immune from any ambivalent feelings in making the kinds of decisions that would give any other leader pause: sending troops to engage in an elective war in Iraq, torturing human beings, saving the planet from climate change, saving the financial system. He has sold himself as a great leader on the basis of his self-confident certainty, and for a long time the public bought it. From a psychological perspective, Bush's repeated assertions that he never experiences doubt in critical matters are simply not credible. They're a dangerous fantasy."

Apartment to get up to 12 more cell antennas

By Rose Egge

Monday, October 20, 2008

When Joel and Nicole Donnelly look out at the view from their deck, five 10-foot-tall cellular phone antennas constructed on the roof of the apartment complex next door block what would be a sweeping view of the city.

Soon the Donnelly's could be looking out at 12 more on the same roof.

Verizon Wireless was granted a conditional use permit on June 30 to add eight new antennas to their existing three on the Sound Crest apartments at 6609 S.W. Admiral Way. That decision is being appealed by community members to a hearing examiner on Oct. 28.

"They're a physical blight on the neighborhood," said neighbor Karen Clegg. "They're an eyesore."

Government To Spy On Every Mobile Phone User In Britain

The planned database containing information on every email and phone call, held at GCHQ

Everyone who buys a mobile telephone will be forced to register their identity on a national database under government plans to extend massively the powers of state surveillance. Phone buyers would have to present a passport or other official form of identification at the point of purchase. Privacy campaigners fear it marks the latest government move to create a surveillance society. The Labour government is behaving irresponsibly and illegally with our privacy. There will be hell to pay at the ballot box for this.

UK: Big Brother database threatens to 'break the back of freedom'

Government plans to build a giant database holding information about every phone call, email and internet visit were last night dealt a major blow after the man in charge of prosecuting terrorism in England and Wales warned of the dangers posed by a "Big Brother" security state.

UK: Government black boxes will ‘collect every email’

Independent [UK]

11/05/08

Internet “black boxes” will be used to collect every email and web visit in the UK under the Government’s plans for a giant “big brother” database, The Independent has learnt. Home Office officials have told senior figures from the internet and telecommunications industries that the “black box” technology could automatically retain and store raw data from the web before transferring it to a giant central database controlled by the Government. Plans to create a database holding information about every phone call, email and internet visit made in the UK have provoked a huge public outcry. Richard Thomas, the Information Commissioner, described it as “step too far” and the Government’s own terrorism watchdog said that as a “raw idea” it was “awful”...

Iraq Wins Right to Prosecute Felonies by Off-Duty US Troops

Agence France-Presse: "Iraq has secured the right to prosecute US soldiers and civilians for crimes committed outside their bases and when off duty, in the latest draft of a security pact that will set the terms of their deployment beyond this year. The draft stipulates that the United States will have the primary right to exercise jurisdiction over its soldiers and civilians if they commit a crime inside their facilities or when on missions, according to a copy obtained by AFP."

The Real Plumbers of Ohio

Paul Krugman, The New York Times: "Forty years ago, Richard Nixon made a remarkable marketing discovery. By exploiting America's divisions - divisions over Vietnam, divisions over cultural change and, above all, racial divisions - he was able to reinvent the Republican brand. The party of plutocrats was repackaged as the party of the 'silent majority,' the regular guys - white guys, it went without saying - who didn't like the social changes taking place. It was a winning formula. And the great thing was that the new packaging didn't require any change in the product's actual contents - in fact, the GOP was able to keep winning elections even as its actual policies became more pro-plutocrat, and less favorable to working Americans, than ever."

Voters Say They Were Duped Into Registering as Republicans

Evan Halper and Michael Rothfeld, The Los Angeles Times: "Dozens of newly minted Republican voters say they were duped into joining the party by a GOP contractor with a trail of fraud complaints stretching across the country. Voters contacted by The Times said they were tricked into switching parties while signing what they believed were petitions for tougher penalties against child molesters. Some said they were told that they had to become Republicans to sign the petition, contrary to California initiative law. Others had no idea their registration was being changed."

Old Growth Forests Are Carbon Sinks and Must Be Protected

ISIS Press Release 20/10/08

A forest levy and other financial mechanisms within the Kyoto Protocol are appropriate measures for protecting natural forests. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

General misconception leaves old growth forests especially vulnerable to wonton destruction

Old-growth forests sequester carbon in live woody tissues and in slowly decomposing litter on the ground and buried in the soil, thereby acting as effective global carbon sinks. Yet, they are not protected by international treaties because of general misconception that ageing forests cease to accumulate carbon.

An international team of scientists led by Sebastian Luyssaert at the University of Antwerp in Belgium reviewed the literature and existing databases for forests between 15 and 800 years old. They found that all forests, from the youngest to the oldest, show positive net ecosystem productivity; i.e., they are growing and hence sequestering or accumulating carbon [1].

Over 30 percent of the global forest area is unmanaged primary forest and this area contains the remaining old growth forests. Half of the primary forests (covering 600 million ha) are located in boreal (near the Arctic) and temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere. These forests alone sequester about 1.3 + 0.5 Gt of C per year. This 15 percent of the global forest area currently not considered when offsetting increasing atmospheric CO2, provides at least 10 percent of the global net ecosystem productivity. Old-growth forests accumulate carbon for centuries and contain large quantities that will move back into the atmosphere if these forests are disturbed or cut down, especially tropical forests [2, 3] (Saving and Restoring Forests Saves Far More Carbon Emissions than Biofuels, SiS 37) .

Net ecosystem productivity and age of forests

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is the net carbon balance of the forest ecosystem as a whole, and is the difference between CO2 uptake by photosynthetic assimilation and losses through plant and soil respiration. Tropical forests were excluded from the study because of the lack of data, and only 12 sites were found for which NEP and age estimates are available.

Self-imposed crisis?

TCS Daily
by Craig S. Marxsen

10/17/08

How can such an old-fashioned liquidity crisis panic financial markets under today’s regime of fiat money? The Federal Reserve was fighting energy and food inflation by slowing the money growth rate. The low interest rates were an ambiguous indicator of monetary policy because an energy crisis was depressing the return on expansions of the capital stock. The energy crisis of the 1970s also depressed the real or inflation adjusted interest rate in a feedback loop that further discouraged petroleum extraction...

Dear conservatives, will you help save the republic from military takeover?

AlterNet
by Naomi Wolf

10/18/08

The founders sought to keep soldiers off our streets because they knew how easily a standing army could subdue a population. That’s why the National Guard is answerable primarily to the governors of states and hence to the people of the United States. But the military is answerable to the commander in chief. These are the president’s troops. The president now has a personal army. One definition of a police state is when the leader has seized control of the military to police citizens domestically. Why listen to me? Not because I am a genius, but because this blueprint is so very predictive. Listen to me because everything that I warned would happen, according to the historical record, has happened, and I have documented the borne-out evidence of the crisis in Give Me Liberty...

American conservatism is “Gone with the Wind”

Liberty & Power

Whatever one says about Marx, certainly some later thinkers of that School, along with some early Americans over a century ago, saw this rise of Finance Capitalism, as opposed to earlier Industrial or Entrepreneurial varieties. Carroll Quigley in 1961 correctly called it ‘Financial Capitalism,’ in The Evolution of Civilizations. CQ understood already morally bankrupted Empires then proceed to economically bankrupt themselves in seeking to fulfill both their Warfare and Welfare dimensions. The Total State! These take a long time to actually ‘fall,’ but the ‘decline’ can go on for a long time, unless a new ‘instruments of expansion’ can be discovered and then decentrally put into use without the bureaucracy comprehending what has occurred...

Capitalism or freedom

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

10/17/08

‘These measures are not intended to take over the free market, but to preserve it,’ George W. Bush said in Orwellian tones Tuesday as he announced the partial nationalization of nine major American banks. He was partly right, though not in the way he meant his words. There is no free financial market to take over. But that means there is no free market to preserve either. The moves he announced, which include government part-ownership of smaller banks too, were just more, albeit big, steps along the corporatist route the country has been following for generations...

The coming military spending surge

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

10/16/08

A substantial progressive landslide — involving the White House, over a dozen House seats, and at least half a dozen Senate seats — now looks like an increasingly likely scenario for November. But to translate electoral victory into policy victory will require this new progressive majority to free itself from forces that are already gathering steam. Forces that will, if successful, prevent it from doing anything more than offering a term or two to clean up the most egregious aspects of the current mess in order to lay the groundwork for a new round of tax cuts and deregulation. … Less noted amidst the recent focus on the economy, though crucially important, is the fact that the uniformed military is preparing an ambush for the next president...

More voters say machines are switching votes

Charleston [WV] Gazette

10/19/08

Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week. This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told the Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for ‘Barack Obama’ kept flipping to ‘John McCain.’ In both counties, Republicans are responsible for overseeing elections. Both county clerks said the problem is isolated. They also blamed voters for not being more careful. ‘People make mistakes more than machines,’ said Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright...

Let’s fix voting system now, not later

Fox News
by Lis Wiehl

10/19/08

As John McCain and Barack Obama prepare for the final sprint after wrapping up Wednesday’s presidential debate, it appears Ohio’s Democratic Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner, is running a race of her own. On late Wednesday evening, Brunner filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to block a decision handed down Tuesday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. The Sixth Circuit directed Brunner to hand over to local election officials ready and direct access to computerized lists of new voters whose registrations do not match state driver records or Social Security information. A 2002 federal law required states to create a statewide database of voter registration information and to verify new voter information by matching such information with other public records...
