In fact, Cheney himself, during an interview with NBC's Matt Lauer the morning after Russert died, reminded us of that Camp David interview, saying: "I always, when I think of Tim and think of 'Meet the Press,' that's the show that always comes to mind. . .. It was a remarkable moment in American history."

EU will Lissabon-Vertrag 2009 in Kraft setzen

Trotz des irischen Volksentscheids gegen den EU-Reformvertrag will die Europäische Union den gestoppten Vertrag mit einem Vier-Punkte-Plan im kommenden Jahr doch noch in Kraft setzen. Auf ihrem Krisengipfel in Brüssel einigten sich die 27 EU-Staats- und Regierungschefs am Freitag (20. Juni) auf eine gemeinsame Marschroute, um dem in Irland durchgefallenen Lissabon-Vertrag eine Zukunft zu geben. Danach wird das irische Referendum "zur Kenntnis genommen", der Ratifizierungsprozess weiter fortgesetzt, Irland bis Mitte Oktober Zeit für neue Lösungsansätze gegeben und bis dahin an "konkreten Ergebnissen" für die 500 Millionen Bürger der EU gearbeitet. Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) zeigte sich "zufrieden" mit dem Ergebnis des zweitägigen Gipfeltreffens. "Wir sind zu Ergebnissen gekommen, die ich für weiterführend halte", sagte Merkel.

Mit dem Nein der Iren zum "EU-Reformvertrag" (Vertrag von Lissabon) ist die Ratifizierung des formal gescheitert. Dennoch rufen Deutschlands Europapolitiker dazu auf, die Ratifizierung fortzusetzen. Von gemeinsamem Handeln in Europa ist die Rede. Außenminister Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) sagte am Montag (16. Juni) auf dem Krisentreffen der 27 EU-Außenminister in Luxemburg, jetzt müsse es darum gehen, zusammen mit Irland die "Situation zu deblockieren". Sein irischer Amtskollege Micheal Martin mahnte, noch sei es zu früh, einen Vorschlag zum Ausweg aus der neuen "Verfassungskrise" vorzulegen. In der vergangenen Woche hatten die Iren den geplanten Vertrag von Lissabon in einer Volksabstimmung mehrheitlich abgelehnt. Der inhaltlich vergleichbare "EU-Verfassungsvertrag" war 2005 in Referenden in Frankreic h und den Niederlanden gescheitert. Bei der Ratifizierung des Reformvertrages durfte nur die Bevölkerung Irlands über die Ratifizierung abstimmen, weil es die Verfassung zwingend vorsah. In allen anderen EU-Mitgliedsstaaten wollte man die Bevölkerung vorsorglich nicht entscheiden lassen.

Eine Ursache dafür, dass heute 2,5 Millionen Kinder in Armut leben, sind zehn Jahre Regierungspolitik der SPD mit Hartz IV und zahlreichen familienpolitischen Belastungen wie die Mehrwertsteuererhöhung und die Streichung des Kindergeldes für 26- und 27jährige. Wenn die SPD sich jetzt lautstark der Bekämpfung der wachsenden Kinderarmut verschreibt, ist das nur zu begrüßen. Von der Einberufung einer „Nationalen Kinderkonferenz“ erhält kein Kind kostenloses Mittagessen, werden gebührenfreie Betreuung und Bildung, mehr Plätze an Ganztagsschulen, Abschaffung der Studiengebühren und für Eltern beitragsfreie Schülerbeförderung keine Realität. Es bedarf schon parlamentarischer Initiativen und Anträge, damit aus den Worten Taten werden. Bislang hat die SPD entsprechende Anträge der LINKEN in Bund, Ländern und Kommunen abgelehnt. Bleibt abzuwarten, ob sie im Interesse der Bekämpfung von Kinderarmut über ihren eigenen Schatten springen kann.

Sippenhaft sollte in einem demokratischen Staat eigentlich schon längst abgeschafft sein. Nicht so jedoch in Bonn. Die Arge in Bonn hat eine 41jährige Frau wegen eines Meldeverstoßes gleich mit sanktioniert. Anstatt den vollen Arbeitslosengeld II Satz auzubezahlen, hat die Arge der Frau lediglich 83 Euro für den laufenden Monat überwiesen. Nun hat die Betroffene genau noch 5 Euro zum Leben.

„Die Reformüberlegungen der privaten Versicherungsbranche gehen weit über die bislang bekannt gewordenen Pläne zum Umbau der Krankenversicherung hinaus. So schlagen die Autoren des Positionspapiers „Soziale Sicherung 2020: Angebote der deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft“ vor, die gesetzliche Rentenversicherung abzuschaffen und auf eine steuerfinanzierte einheitliche Grundrente für alle umzustellen. Die Pflegeversicherung soll komplett in ein privates, kapitalgedecktes System umgebaut werden; die Arbeitslosenversicherung halten sie für „nicht zwingend“. (…) Deshalb müssten die staatlichen Vorsorgesysteme sich auf ihre „Kernaufgaben konzentrieren“. In dem Papier ist von „Rückführung“ und „Rückbau der staatlichen Sozialsysteme“ die Rede. The writ of habeas corpus, a process to scrutinize detentions, is an ancient issue, seven centuries old. Members of the 17th-century English Parliament resented the King’s circumvention of the writ’s reach by sending prisoners to remote lands. The Supreme Court has now sided with those who long ago opposed such dirty executive tricks. In late 2001, the administration set up the prison camp in Cuba. The idea was to have executive control but not be subject to U.S. judicial checks. Since the prison is on Cuban ’sovereign territory,’ American courts supposedly have no right to intervene. But the U.S. has had ‘complete and uninterrupted control of the bay for over 100 years,’ Justice Kennedy wrote for the Court. ‘In every practical sense Guantanamo is not abroad; it is within the constant jurisdiction of the United States’...
