Democrats Juggle Iraq, Economy

Manu Raju, of The Hill, reports: "Even though Democrats are not shy about pointing to March 19, the five-year anniversary of the start of the war, they are not eager about holding this week's votes on Iraq because they know they could be used by Republicans looking for more ammunition against their candidates, aides say. As soon as the votes end, the chamber will immediately turn to a bill aimed at easing the housing crunch, which - unlike the Iraq measures - Democrats plan to talk about at length this week, including after their policy luncheon Tuesday afternoon."

Koalition will Online-Durchsuchungen im BKA-Gesetz verankern

McCain May Have Covered Up Abramoff Email to Protect GOP

Sam Stein, reporting for The Huffington Post, writes: "On the stump, Sen. John McCain often cites his work tackling the excesses of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff as evidence of his sturdy ethical compass. A little-known document, however, shows that McCain may have taken steps to protect his Republican colleagues from the scope of his investigation."

Shocking Stories About the Forgotten War in Afghanistan

Joshua Holland, reporting for AlterNet, interviews Andy Worthington. He writes: "In his book, 'The Guantanamo Files,' historian and journalist Andy Worthington offers a much-needed corrective to the draft of the Afghanistan conflict that most Americans saw on their nightly newscasts. Worthington is the first to detail the histories of all 774 prisoners who have passed through the Bush administration's 'legal black hole' at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But his history starts in Afghanistan, and makes it abundantly clear that the road to Guantanamo - not to mention Abu Ghraib - began in places like Kandahar."

US Quietly Breaks UN Treaty

Leslie Griffith, writing for Truthout, says: "On Friday, at a United Nations meeting in Geneva, the United States broke a series of legal promises.

Taking offense is the best offense

Slate
by John Dickerson

02/25/08

Barack Obama’s chance came on Tuesday, when the Drudge Report claimed Clinton staffers were passing around a picture of Sen. Obama in the native dress of Wajir, a rural desert area in northeastern Kenya. Drudge didn’t explain to whom the picture was being sent, and the only context for the picture was a quote from an alleged Clinton staffer asking: ‘Wouldn’t we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?’ It was just the opening a presidential candidate craves …. The swift reaction from the Obama forces was good damage control and even better umbrage-taking, a political tactic that has been elevated to a high art in the 2008 campaign. There was once a time when campaigns didn’t respond to items like this for fear of giving them too much publicity. But if done correctly, candidates can exploit flamboyant displays of public upset to gain attention, raise money, put their opponents on the defensive, and distract from an unfavorable story...

Accomodating torture

CounterPunch
by Robert Weitzel

02/24/08

On February 13 the Senate narrowly passed-on a 51-45 party-line vote-an intelligence bill that will, among other things, ban waterboarding as an ‘enhanced interrogation technique,’ a Bush-era euphemism for torture. Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who was tortured as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese, traded his principled stance against waterboarding for a White House endorsement of his candidacy and voted against the ban. Torture is now officially a plank in the GOP platform. Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama were too busy campaigning to go on congressional record as either supporting or opposing the ban...

The age of barbarism light

Asia Times
by Karen Greenberg

02/23/08

Upon entering one of a series of gloomy, cave-like rooms, filled with the implements of the dismal craft that had its heyday from the 15th to the 18th centuries, you would notice a range of mechanical devices and iron tools (also illustrated in drawings galore), all once meant to pierce, prod, or otherwise drive some poor heretic into the agony of confession. Often in those years before video cameras were available, all this was done in public sight. And then, as you wound your way through the exhibit, you would come upon one of its centerpiece displays — the ‘water torture table’ to which Bradbury alludes...

The 4 main kinds of ethics: An introduction

Rebirth of Reason
by Ed Thompson

02/25/08

Morality is about the kinds of things that need to be done in order to live well as a human being. When different ethics compete, they compete by taking different positions on what it means for us to live well as human beings. Sometimes, for instance, guarding and defending the welfare of animals, or the ‘welfare’ of nature, is taken to be what it is that is needed for us to live well as human beings. Other times it has been supposedly understood that always doing whatever you feel like doing is what is needed for us to live well as human beings. At still other times it has been supposedly-understood that a following just a few key rules would make everything right. The purpose of this short essay is to introduce the 4 main ways that we can think about morality and to get a glimpse at how those 4 mutually-exclusive and altogether-exhaustible views result in radically different ethical recommendations...

Individualism, the collectivists’ nemesis

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Tibor R. Machan

02/22/08

It is individualism that the American Founders elevated into political prominence and it is individualism that most politicians and governments, including America’s, find most annoying because it is the bulwark against arbitrary power. If, as the Declaration of Independence states, individual human beings have unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, no one may violate these rights. Every adult individual is sovereign, a self-ruler and not subject to the rule of others...

The ghost story

Boston Globe
by James Carroll

02/25/08

The unfolding political contest is a window into America’s soul. The nation is arguing with itself. The candidates embody separate impulses. As voters choose sides, a red state-blue state polarity again takes shape. Within the Democratic Party, the dispute is narrower, but still sharp. Yet in truth, each citizen carries within herself or himself the structure of the conflict: hard versus soft, experience versus change, programmed versus spontaneous, self-interest versus empathy, hope in an open future versus lessons from the past. Politics, by isolating these positions and attributing them to one candidate over against another, parodies the interior struggle of every American...

Gitmo’s secret chamber

Fox News/Heritage
by James Jay Carafano

Since Sept. 11, the biggest disaster of the long war on terrorism has been the Bush administration’s response to concerns about its wartime detention policies. This is particularly true of the way it has handled charges regarding Guantanamo Bay, the detention center for ‘the worst of the worst’ captured in that war. Amazingly, the administration has managed to make its public-relations disaster even worse. The latest bombshell fell with a recent Associated Press report that Rear Adm. Mark Buzby, head of military detention operations at Guantanamo, confirmed the existence of a ‘Camp 7′ on base. The hitherto-unknown maximum security facility is home to about a dozen ‘high-value’ detainees. There is, of course, nothing wrong with maintaining separate facilities for different types of detainees. There could be several good operational reasons to do that.” (02/22/08)

Bush lobbies for surveillance law

President Bush on Monday lobbied again for an intelligence law allowing government eavesdropping on phone calls and e-mails, as the tone of the dispute between the White House and Congress over terrorist surveillance grew increasingly sharp. ‘To put it bluntly, if the enemy is calling into America, we really need to know what they’re saying, and we need to know what they’re thinking, and we need to know who they’re talking to,’ Bush said at the start of his annual meeting with the nation’s governors at the White House. ‘This is a different kind of struggle than we’ve ever faced before. Dems want FEC to investigate McCain fundraising

Fox News

02/25/08

The national Democratic party wants campaign finance regulators to investigate whether Sen. John McCain would violate money-in-politics laws by withdrawing from the primary election’s public finance system, filing an official complaint Monday with the Federal Election Commission. McCain, who had been entitled to $5.8 million in federal funds for the primary, has decided to bypass the system so he can avoid spending limits between now and the GOP’s national convention in September. FEC Chairman David Mason notified McCain last week that he can only withdraw from public financing if he answers questions about a campaign loan and obtains approval from four members of the six-member commission. Such approval is doubtful in the short term because the commission has four vacancies and cannot convene a quorum...

For decades, ranchers and farmers across the West have tapped into rivers and streams on or near Indian reservations. Now, as drought conditions plague big parts of the region, they’re concerned their access to those sources could dry up. Although the U.S. Supreme Court gave tribes the primary rights to streams on their reservations in 1908, until recently, 19 tribes in the West had not exercised those rights. This year, tribes in Montana, New Mexico, Idaho, Nevada and California are on the verge of securing their claims...

Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes, reporting for The Times of London, write: "The Bush Administration was wrong about the benefits of the war and it was wrong about the costs of the war. Losing the future

Common Wonders
by Robert C. Koehler

03/06/08

A certain reverence is required just to approach the book’s title: ‘The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict’ by noted economists Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes. I can see why they understated it. The pulse of outrage beats behind the cold calculations in this concise volume, newly published by Norton. We’re not just ‘losing’ this tragic, arrogantly unplanned war in the conventional sense of failing to subdue our enemies — we’re committing slow socioeconomic suicide with its open-ended pursuit, losing, as we plunge recklessly into debt over it, our options, our ability to choose. We’re losing the future...

Running on fumes: A bankrupt nation

from Reason to Freedom
by Peter Namtvedt

02/24/08

The total future obligations of this government now total more than $59 trillion. USA Today published that number in May 2007. See below for the source of another estimate in a 2006 article at the Federal Reserve, which is $ 65.9 trillion (5 times GDP). A figure already known and growing every minute, the national debt now tops $9.3 trillion, the current year’s deficit is $250 billion and the economic stimulus bill is likely to add another $168 billion. The freshly announced federal budget for next year again promises to spend more than the revenue coming in. That could add another $418 billion. In a matter of months, in other words, we will see the national debt reach as high as $10 trillion. The government eventually has to tax us enough or print enough dollars to pay that off...

Who cares about private life any more?

It’s interesting that the Government has joined the struggle against a national DNA database. It won’t help. We’ve had it. The discourse, as they call it in intellectual circles, is against us. On our side, the side against these databases, we don’t have any British principles any more. We have arguments (efficiency, security, feasibility), but the axioms of private life are more or less gone in this country. Maybe the European Court will come down for the principle of privacy, but our national mentality will still be spilling out surveillance initiatives, monitoring programmes, enforcement strategies...

The plan for what comes after Iraq

Boston Globe
by Andrew J. Bacevich

02/24/08

The issue that ought to occupy center stage in the 2008 presidential campaign is not US policy toward Iraq but US policy after Iraq. ‘After’ in this context does not mean that Iraq is now receding in America’s rearview mirror; the conflict there will continue for years to come. ‘After’ means that, like it or not, dealing with the war’s consequences will rank near the top of the next president’s agenda. One such consequence is this: the United States finds itself without a set of viable and morally coherent principles to guide decisions regarding the use of force. The United States once adhered to principles that were both sound and eminently straightforward. As recently as the 1970s and 1980s, the so-called Vietnam syndrome exercised a restraining influence. Americans saw military power as something to be husbanded. The preference was to use force as a last resort, employed to defend vital interests. Overt aggression qualified as categorically wrong...

Iran: US intelligence “fake”

Iran said on Sunday it had cleared up all past outstanding issues over its nuclear program with the United Nations nuclear watchdog and accused the United States of providing intelligence that was fake. ‘The work plan is finished,’ Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, told Reuters, referring to a pact between Tehran and the IAEA to answer outstanding questions about its nuclear activities one by one. Dennis Kucinich Still Standing Strong

We got word today that Dennis Kucinich is fighting back stronger than ever. He has more new TV spots in production for the last week of the primary campaign in his congressional district in OH, including a new one we heard is just spectacular that they will have ready to run on Tuesday.

We can beat the big time corporate media at their own game and win, but Dennis needs your help to run these spots to keep the truth out there. This is what we need to fight back:

Thank You Dennis Video

In this video, grateful union workers remind their fellow constituents how hard Dennis Kucinich fought for them, saving the local steel mill, and with it thousands of good paying union and support jobs. Please make a contribution if you can now to run more of these spots in the critical last week of the OH primary campaign, to remind Cleveland of the truth.

Because neither let us forget how hard Dennis has fought for us, by his sheer force of personal courage bringing impeachment of the most diabolical Vice President in our history to the floor of House, and to the Judiciary Committee, where even now it is gathering more and more support.

Let us stand now with Dennis, just as he has stood for us, so that he can continue to fight the good fight not only on Cheney impeachment, but once that is surely underway, on Bush impeachment as well. Let us not wake up on March 5th and wish we had done just a little more to save the man who may well have saved our entire Democracy by keeping the Constitution on the table.

Thank You Dennis Video: http://www.usalone.com/thank_you_dennis.php

And to thank you for your valiant support, Dennis wants you to have as his gift to you a copy of his special Kucinich commemorative edition pocket constitution, with your donation of $100 or more. And if you are one of the few who have not be blindsided by Cheney's gut-the-economy agenda, Dennis Kucinich will personally autograph your copy with your donation of $1,000 or more.

Please note that even if you had already donated the full legal limit to his brave presidential run, which had a real impact in shifting the debate, you can donate another $2,300 for his congressional seat defense.

But even if you can't make a donation right now, there is still something incredibly important you can do to help, and that is to send links to the video to anyone you can. So ask all your friends to visit the page below too.

Thank You Dennis Video: http://www.usalone.com/thank_you_dennis.php

So please do what you can to spread the word that this is a must win, must-keep situation. It is only because of the courage of Dennis Kucinich in standing strong to protect and defend the Constitution that we are where we are now, with more and more members of Congress clamoring for meaningful impeachment hearings, and the House still holding the line against that craven telecom immunity thing.

Let us not be complacent. Let us not take anything for granted just because Dennis is so amazing on every issue. We have to make sure that we empower Dennis to remind his constituents what a magnificent job he has been doing for them and for us all. And nothing would push impeachment forward more than the most clearcut victory for Dennis in his primary.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

French judges probe firms over vaccinations -source

This is an interesting story about vaccine companies being investigated for serious crimes. Many of you are probably aware of the links between vaccines and person who suffer from electro hypersensitivity (EHS).

Just a few weeks ago my dog had her annual vaccinations and then she had a series of terrible seizures which lasted for several days.

Please read the article linked below.

Was 9/11 an Inside Job?

By Mark H. Gaffney

Regrettably, there is considerable evidence that elements of the Bush administration were complicit in the 9/11 attack, and may even have helped stage it. Let us now examine some of what I regard as the most compelling evidence. However, the following discussion makes no claim to be comprehensive.

Geo-Politics, Economics, and Globalization

by Dr. Dennis Cuddy, Ph.D

In a note at the beginning of my last column, I referred to a distinguished political economist in 1908 predicting the First World War followed by world peace. Geopolitics and economics are tools used by the power elite to achieve world government via globalization. In 1908, THE JOURNAL OF AMERICAN HISTORY devoted Volume 2, Number 4 "To the United Nations of the World" (UNW). It included the "First Draft of the Constitution of the United Nations of the World," written by William Osborne McDowell, who had assembled a group of political economists toward the effort........

Vote fraud and the GOP convention delegates

by Devvy Kidd

Before I get into vote fraud, my mail box has been drowning in e-mail from Americans who are very alarmed about Barack Obama. Not all, of course. One man said in his e-mail that he didn't believe what I wrote in my last column. He said, Obama is a "good person." Obama gave him "hope" and "inspiration." It didn't seem to bother this man that Obama's past history includes.......

The U.S. military finally had a successful real world test of its anti-ballistic missile defense systems

So, after years of trying, the U.S. military finally had a successful real world test of its anti-ballistic missile defense systems. The Pentagon claims that a three-stage missile launched from the USS Lake Erie off the coast of Hawaii on Wednesday successfully destroyed a wayward U.S. spy satellite. The official story is that the satellite was loaded with 1,000 pounds of a dangerous chemical, hydrazine, in its fuel tank and needed to be destroyed to prevent harm to others. The rest of the world isn’t buying the explanation. They see it as a thinly-disguised attempt by the Pentagon to test an anti-satellite weapon and another example of how the United States is trying to seek military dominance in space...
