Congress to Bush: You've Lost Mail

Dan Froomkin writes in The Washington Post, "The Bush White House has made a mockery of the Presidential Records Act and its requirement that official White House records - including e-mails - be preserved for posterity." And, Daniel Schulman writes in Mother Jones, "Since as early as 2004, the National Archives has warned the White House that its system for preserving email records was inadequate-and that some of those emails may not have been archived at all, but the Bush administration has been slow to remedy the problem."

Food and the Specter of Malthus

Mark Thirlwell of The Financial Times writes: "Last week, financial markets experienced that 1970s feeling, as a combination of rising inflation and unemployment in the US triggered unwelcome memories of the decade of stagflation. Then came this week's report that the United Nations world food program might have to ration food aid. Set against a backdrop of rising food prices worldwide - global food prices have now risen by more than 75 percent since their lows of 2000, jumping more than 20 percent in 2007 alone - the news revived fears from a much earlier era, conjuring up the Reverend Thomas Malthus."

Iraqi Leaders Veto Law Bush Administration Hailed as Political Breakthrough

Steve Lannen reports for McClatchy Newspapers: "Iraq's three-man presidency council Wednesday announced that it's vetoed legislation that US officials two weeks ago hailed as significant political progress.... The rejected bill, which sets out the political structure for Iraq's provincial governments and establishes a basis for elections in October, was only the second of 18 US-set political benchmarks that the war-tore nation needs to reach."

Liberal Democrats Seek Secret FISA Session

Mike Soraghan reports for The Hill: "Liberal House Democrats are pushing for a closed session to discuss the legal underpinnings of President Bush’s intelligence surveillance program. They believe that the more members know about it, the less likely they will be to support Bush’s wish to make it permanent." Meanwhile, The Washington Post's Dan Eggen reports, "Republicans are convinced that highlighting their counterterrorism policies will be a political winner in this presidential election year, and they have focused this week on Democratic opposition to their version of a new surveillance bill as a way to paint Democrats as soft on national security, according to GOP lawmakers and their aides."

Phone mast plans delay

CONTROVERSIAL plans to erect a 20ft telephone mast on a social club are still up in the air.

The owners of Owton Manor Social Club, in Wynyard Road, Hartlepool, want permission to install the O2 mobile telephone mast on their building.

The club applied for planning permission last year but the application was rejected over public health fears and concerns that the height and design would be detrimental to the area.

Council admits phone mast blunder

The phone mast that has sprung up in Exning Road

By Robert Andrews

A COUNCIL blunder that led to a mobile phone mast being put up in Exning Road has left residents fuming.

The 30ft mast which resembles a lamp post, has been installed by mobile phone company O2 on the new leisure centre site next to Newmarket College.

Jim Stevenson, community liaison manager for O2, claimed the company had written to nearby residents telling them the mast was going to be put up.

But residents contacted by the Journal said they had received nothing, while some did not even realise the new structure was a phone mast.

This has been another terrible week for Guantanamo’s Military Commissions, established by Dick Cheney and his close advisors in November 2001 to try, convict and execute those responsible for 9/11 through a novel process so far removed from the US court system and the military’s own judicial procedures that the tainted fruit of torture would be allowed, and secret evidence could be withheld from the accused...

The liars are at it again

The Price of Liberty
by Ed Henry

02/25/08

Social Security supports itself with revenue from Payroll Taxes. What’s more, Social Security produces an annual surplus that the government steals and spends elsewhere, what would be labeled a capital crime were it committed in the private sector. Last Year, fiscal 2007, that surplus was $82.4 billion. What’s more, the accumulated surpluses amount to the mind boggling figure of $2.2 trillion as of the end of the last calendar year. All of this is faithfully reported in the U.S. Treasury’s Monthly Statement, table 8, and third from the last page. Follow these reports and it will be difficult to believe that Social Security needs to be ‘fixed’ or requires ’saving.’ The only thing Social Security needs is to force the government to keep its grubby hands off surpluses and allow the Social Security Administration to do what’s right with the people’s money...

No country for grouchy old men

Denver Post
by David Harsanyi

02/25/08

Political observers have questioned whether Americans are ‘ready’ to elect a woman or an African-American to the presidency. A more pertinent question, actually, is whether Americans are ready to elect a grouchy old white guy. According to a Gallup poll, only 5 percent of Americans would never vote for an African-American, while 11 percent claim they would never vote for a woman. Believe it or not, comparatively, those are optimistic numbers — if you believe in polls that solidify your world view, like I do. Republican candidate John McCain is hamstrung by a more worrisome factor. He will be 72 by the time the November election rolls around...

Bei BMW ist Rendite wichtiger als Menschen

28. Februar 2008

The latest International Atomic Energy Agency report suggesting progress has been made by Iran is quietly disparaged by the Bush administration as another clean pass for the rash theocracy. WAR's March Madness - Day 2
Protest Huntingdon Life Sciences Customers in New York City
Sunday, 3-2-08 at 2:00 PM

Join Win Animal Rights as we conclude the opening weekend of our March Madness Campaign. To find out more about March Madness, visit the WAR website and click on the Skull & Bones.

http://war-online.org/

On Sunday, we turn our attention back to the puppy killing, animal torturing scum of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). HLS is a company whose primary business is death and suffering. 500 animals are killed there every day. On Sunday, March 2nd, we will focus on key executives of two of Huntingdon Life Science's most important customers: Novartis and Bristol-Myers Squibb. We will start the day with a protest at one of New York City's busiest Staples Stores. Staples has been caught delivering supplies to HLS in unmarked trucks. Cheeky, eh? Next week we will be posting an action alert with full details and contact information on your local Staples stores.

Date/Time: Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Meet at: Staples, 2248 Broadway (80th & 81st) - New York City
If you are late: call 646-267-9934

We will be at the location noted above for approximately one hour, after which we will move on to other upper westside locations. Please dress for the weather. Cold weather gear (gloves, scarves, hats, layers of socks and good walking shoes) will help you to be comfortable as we travel between locations.

When making your plans, please consider that there are 70,000 animals trapped inside of Huntingdon Life Sciences right now. Some are violently ill while others pace their cold steel cages and dank concrete pens waiting to be poisoned or mutilated for toothpaste or some new chemical or food additive. You are their only hope. Please, please stop whatever you are doing and make plans to join us on Sunday when we will visit the homes of key executives that are responsible for supporting Huntingdon Life Sciences. If you cannot join us, you can send messages to:

Dr. Arun Nadiga Novartis Investor Relations
608 Fifth Ave. New York, NY 10020
Phone: 1.212.830.2444
e-mail: arun.nadiga@novartis.com

Note: in previous e-mails we asked you to contact Ronen Tamir of Novartis. We are pleased to report that Mr. Tamir recently left Novartis and is working for a company that does not do business with HLS.

345 Park Ave. New York, NY 10154

Walkout fear over phone mast

The Nelson Mail

Thursday, 28 February 2008

Leaders of a Nelson playcentre, upset over plans to build a 22m-high cellphone tower metres from where dozens of preschoolers play, fear parents will pull their children out.

Telecom is set to build a cellphone mast at its Atawhai exchange site at Atawhai Crescent in June.

The exchange is next to the playcentre, which cares for up to 70 children, from newborns to six-year-olds.

Parents’ protest: mobile mast makes waves

Published: February 28, 2008, 09:30

By Indira Dharchaudhuri, Senior Sub-Editor

The Dubai British School (DBS) has lodged a complaint with du for erecting a disguised mobile mast next to the school’s primary unit.

The mast, which is also adjacent to a mosque and to a shopping centre which also houses Spinneys, was erected without consulting school authorities, said Peter Moore, DBS Primary Head Teacher.

DBS staff and parents are worried the mast is a "potential health hazard since its radiation poses serious threats like childhood leukaemia – a common concern in the UAE," said Lucy John, an anxious parent.

Protesters win phone mast battle

by Sarah Swain

HUNDREDS of people who opposed plans for a 60ft mobile phone mast in their community have won their fight.

Springboig Bowling Club was considering renting part of its site to mobile firm 02, which is having to move its current phone mast in Springboig Avenue due to building work.

Local residents who live near the club opposed the plan to move it to the club's land saying they were concerned over health fears.

They claimed the club would get £20,000 for allowing it to be moved and collected 200 letters against the plan.

Senate advances bill to cut Iraq funding

Fremont Tribune

02/26/08

In an about-face, Senate Republicans on Tuesday agreed with Democrats to advance an anti-war bill because they said the debate would give them time to hail progress in Iraq. The change of heart came after months of blocking similar measures. But unlike most of last year, security conditions in Iraq have improved, and Republicans say they now feel they have the upper hand on the debate...

Army, citing strain, calls for reduced combat tours

USA Today

02/26/08

The Army’s top general said Tuesday he hopes to reduce combat tours for soldiers in Iraq from 15 months to 12 months this summer and would not go back to the longer tours even if President Bush decides to suspend troop reductions for the second half of the year. Gen. George Casey, the Army chief of staff, told a Senate panel that the Army is under serious strain from years of war-fighting and must reduce the length of combat tours as soon as possible...

How To Spy On Your Partner

Modern Gadgets That Unmask The Cheats

LIPSTICK on collars or smelling of a strange perfume used to be how cheating husbands got caught out.

But in these days of big divorce settlements, spurned partners are gathering evidence the hi-tech way.

One US firm has produced a SIM card reader that opens text messages AFTER they've been deleted - and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Other surveillance gadgets used today would look at home in spy films.

Parents give mobile plan a bad reception

By Michael Cleggett

Concerned members of the community held a meeting last week to oppose plans for mobile phone antennas at Faulconbridge.

A group of parents have voiced their opposition to a set of mobile phone antennas planned for a site close to Faulconbridge Public School.

Last week the Gazette revealed a Vodafone and Optus proposal which sought to use private land occupied by the Ugg Boot store in Faulconbridge for the three new antennas.

The school’s P & C has since indicated it will oppose the installation at this site, holding a meeting last Thursday night to discuss the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted from mobile phone towers.
