HLV INFO 12/AT

13-02-2008

(dpa) / (jk/c't)

Why I Don't Have A Mobile

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/magazinemonitor/2008/02/why_i_dont_have_a_mobile.shtml

Unsere aktuelle Pressemitteilung dazu finden Sie hier: http://umweltinstitut.org/pressemitteilungen/2008/2008_02_11-579.html

John McCain and the neocon resurgence

AntiWar.Com
by Philip Giraldi

02/12/08

With the withdrawal of Romney, Washington pundits unanimously agree that John McCain will defeat Huckabee to become the Republican nominee. McCain is the neocons’ anointed choice for president of the United States, and has been so for many years. He was their candidate when he ran against George Bush in the primaries in 2000 and again when he announced his candidacy for 2008. When McCain’s campaign underachieved last summer and it appeared that Rudy Giuliani would be the Republican candidate, many leading neocons, including Norman Podhoretz and Daniel Pipes, joined the New Yorker’s campaign. Now that Giuliani has withdrawn, they will presumably return home again, rejoining Robert Kagan and James Woolsey, both of whom have been with McCain since early 2007. That McCain is no traditional conservative if measured by his views on cultural and fiscal issues matters not at all...

McCain apes Bush on Iraq, as Dems stand passively by

Salon
by Gary Kamiya

02/12/08

John McCain’s Achilles’ heel should be Iraq. He is an unapologetic hawk at a time when only right-wing die-hards cling to that position. His hard-line insistence that U.S. troops must remain there until ‘victory,’ whatever that is, puts him at odds with a clear majority of the American people, who want the troops withdrawn soon. On the most critical issue facing the country, McCain’s position is indistinguishable from that of President Bush, whose 30 percent approval rating in a recent Associated Press-Ipso poll is at its lowest ever. With Rush Limbaugh and his ilk sulking, conservatives divided and demoralized, the war tab up to $2 trillion, and Democratic voters energized by their candidates and flocking to the polls in record numbers, McCain’s stance on Iraq should doom him in November. Yet the major polls — admittedly far from reliable this far in advance of the election — show a virtual dead heat in a hypothetical general election matchup, with McCain narrowly leading Hillary Clinton and narrowly trailing Barack Obama...

The new crime of thinking in the US

Hillsboro Times-Gazette
by Gary Barnett

02/12/08

It looks like the term ‘thought police’ just might take on a whole new and real meaning. This depends on what happens in the U.S. Senate after receiving House bill H.R. 1955: Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. This act (now S-1959 — Senate version) is now being considered by Senate committees and, if passed by the Senate and signed by the president, will become law. Common sense would indicate that something this vague and dangerous would not make it out of committee, but considering that the House passed it on Oct. 23 with 404 ayes, six nays, and 22 present/not voting, I’m not holding my breath...

Privacy rights advocates slam plans to fingerprint, register visitors to EU

02/12/08

Rights advocates called on European Union officials to reconsider proposals to be released Wednesday that foresee fingerprinting and electronically recording all foreigners who visit the EU.Franco Frattini, the EU’s justice and interior affairs commissioner is scheduled to present plans for an overhaul of security at the union’s borders that would replicate many U.S. border checks.

Some civil rights groups called Tuesday for the European Union to scrap similar ideas, saying they would do little to fight crime or terrorism.”You dehumanize foreigners and you collect their personal and sensitive information with no clear personal gains whatsoever,” said Gus Hosein, from Privacy International. He likened the EU plans to building a “fortress Europe” to keep foreigners out.

Hosein said he expected complaints from many visitors if EU governments adopt a U.S.-style fingerprinting system. In the United States, the program has not affected U.S. citizens, who do not have to have their fingers scanned when leaving or entering the country...

Executions may be carried out at Gitmo

Knoxville News Sentinel

If six suspected terrorists are sentenced to death at Guantanamo Bay for the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. Army regulations that were quietly amended two years ago open the possibility of execution by lethal injection at the military base in Cuba, experts said Tuesday. Questions over Wirral phone masts blunders

SENIOR council officials in Wirral will face tough questions next week after opposition parties forced a special meeting to examine how the authority blundered over planning permission for four phone masts.

It is almost a year since the planning permission for four T-Mobile masts were refused by the council’s planning committee, but “administrative errors” meant the company was not informed.

Amazing "I'm On The Table" Video, A Primary Challenger For Pelosi

We have sent countless emails, faxes and made phone calls beyond measure, demanding that Congress actually stand up for itself and for us, and confront the runaway Constitutional train wreck that is the Cheney/Bush administration. But there comes a time in the course of human events when we ourselves have to stand up to those who we trusted to fight for us, but who have failed us, and challenge them for their own primary nominations in their own party.

Yet and still, first a brave candidate must step forward to make that challenge a reality, and in the 8th Congressional district of California, Shirley Golub has answered the call of destiny in her heart to make that happen. And Shirley has posted the most amazing video you ever saw to throw down that challenge, and you can see it at this page.

Shirley Golub "I'm On The Table" Video: http://www.shirley08.com

What Shirley is doing is leading a weekly demonstration in front of Nancy Pelosi's district office, every Thursday at noon, at 450 Golden Gate Ave, to literally put herself on the table and say, "I'm on the table, Nancy, and as long as I am, impeachment is too.". And so too with every other issue we expected action on at least a year ago, ending the indefensible occupation of Iraq, and every other issue on which Congress seems incapable of confronting the most unpopular administration in American history.

By inviting all her fellow constituents to join her in demonstration that grows week by week, Shirley Golub is looking to demonstrate that we the people have the numbers to replace ANY member of Congress who thinks they can long ignore the voices of their constituents. Please watch Shirley's kickoff mobilization video:

Shirley Golub "I'm On The Table" Video: http://www.shirley08.com

And then won't you consider making a contribution from the same page above to support this brave lady in her mission of destiny. But even if you can't make a contribution, please do all you can to spread the word about this video clip, both through the link above and on YouTube itself.

Shirley is also hoping to inspire others all around the country to mount their own primary challenges to other incumbents who don't get it. Because in most jurisdictions there is still time to do that for this election cycle.

And let there be more and more people at 450 Golden Gate Ave, at noon every week, and at like demonstrations all over the country, until Congress finally gets the message, that their own seats, which they thought were so safe, are now in real jeopardy because they would not do the people's business.

If you want to do more than just show up, if you want to make signs, help collect petition signatures, if you are a street artist, if you are progressive activist on any issue, let it all come together. Let a spontaneous people's movement self-assemble itself. And be part of it by bring there.

Paid for by Shirley Golub for Congress

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

ACTION ALERT UPDATE

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

Global Ecological Emergency: Brazil Must Succeed in Keeping Soybeans Out of Amazon Rainforest

Rainforest Portal a project of Ecological Internet http://www.rainforestportal.org/

February 12, 2008

TAKE ACTION

Only soy products that do not directly or indirectly destroy ancient rainforests, or intensify climate change and other problems inherent with large-scale industrial monocultures, will be tolerated in international markets

http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=brazil_agrofuel

The greatest emerging threat to Amazon rainforests and communities is industrial soy plantations. Huge mechanized, soy monocultures destroy tropical ecosystems, accelerate climate change and cause human rights abuses primarily to produce agrofuel and livestock feed. The soya industry wipes out biodiversity, destroys soil fertility, pollutes freshwater and displaces communities. Soybean production expands the agricultural frontier not only through fire and deforestation to clear ancient rainforests, but more importantly by pushing cattle ranches and displacing forest peoples further into natural rainforest ecosystems.

With rising soy and other agricultural commodity prices, there has been a marked increase in fires and Amazonian deforestation to clear new agricultural lands from primary rainforests. In reaction Brazil has again announced increased agricultural deforestation enforcement. Amazon rainforest sustainability critically depends upon new soybean production being kept out of ancient primary rainforest ecosystems. Writing for The Nation, David Roberts says, "Though recession and war are probably higher on the public's immediate priority list, there is no challenge of greater historical consequence facing the next US president than the climate crisis. Senate OKs new rules on eavesdropping

Defiance Crescent News

02/12/08

The Senate on Tuesday approved new rules for government eavesdropping on phone calls and e-mails, giving the White House much of the latitude it wanted and granting legal immunity to telecommunications companies that helped in the snooping after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Protection for the telecom companies is the most prominent feature of the legislation, something President Bush had insisted on as essential to getting private sector cooperation in spying on foreign terrorists and other targets...

Warning: This Article Contains Very Disturbing Video!

They say that the difference between how democracy in Europe has evolved compared to that of the United States is that in Europe the government is afraid of the People whereas in the United States the People are afraid of the government. That's a dangerous state of affairs and it looks like it's going to get worse.

The Consumer End of a Stumbling Economy

Charles R. Morris, writing for The Washington Independent, says: "One can pity Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke. No other federal reserve chairman ever cut interest rates by a full 1.25% within just eight days, as Bernanke has done. But the monetary skies remain as leaden and thunder-clouded as ever. The stock market keeps quivering downward, crowds thin at the malls, jobless queues grow. Wal-Mart reports that customers are using their Christmas gift cards for groceries."

US to Try 9/11 Suspects in "Kangaroo Court"

Unnecessary Harm

The New York Times's editorial team comments: "The Bush administration's decision to put six detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on trial before military tribunals and to seek the death penalty is both a betrayal of American ideals and simply bad strategy. Instead of being what they could and should be - a model of justice dispensed impartially, surely and dispassionately - the trials will proceed under deeply flawed procedures that violate this country's basic fairness. The intense negative attention they will receive will do enormous damage to what is left of America's standing in world opinion."

Support French Scientist Telling the Truth About GMOs

When ISIS organised its briefing at European Parliament in June 2007 (Scientists and MEPs for a GM free Europe, SiS 35), we already knew that one of our scientist speakers, Dr. Irina Ermakova, had had her funding withdrawn because the results of her experiments (GM Soya Fed Rats: Stunted, Dead, or Sterile, SiS 33) challenged the claims of the biotech industry that GM food is safe. She has since been the victim of a scandalous attempt to discredit her work by the mainstream journal, Nature Biotechnology (Science and Scientist Abused, SiS 36), and no satisfactory redress has yet been forthcoming (see Letter to Nature Biotechnology: Systematic bias in favour of no adverse impacts from GM feed, and Letter to Nature Biotechnology: Prepublication Review Yes, But Review Panel Must be Balanced, SiS 37). A second member of the panel, Dr. Christian Vélot, has lost his funding. There is a committee of support for Vélot and they have organised a petition that has attracted 9288 signatures as of 26 January 2008. You can sign it on line by going to:

http://sciencescitoyennes.org/spip.php?article1638

Please also send the link to your friends. The biotech industry is working very hard to suppress independent science and scientists; working through the very academic institutions that are supposed to defend them. We must do all we can to show our support as citizens and fellow scientists, and to send a clear message to the University administration that their action will not be tolerated.

Petition (translated from French)

Christian Vélot is a lecturer and researcher in molecular genetics at the Université Paris-Sud. Since 2002 he has led a research group in the Institute of Genetics and Microbiology (a joint CNRS-University institute) at the Orsay Scientific Centre. In addition to carrying out his teaching and research, he has devoted some of his own time to meetings on GMOs. These meetings, one of which in particular served as a working document for the GMO activists at the Grenelle de l'Environnement [a series of meetings in October 2007 in which representatives from government, professional associations and NGOs discussed environmental issues]. He has frequently appeared as a witness in the trials of people charged with destroying GM crops. Christian Vélot has been one of those who have been calling attention to the risks and promoting democratic debate on an issue that is largely concealed from the public. As a result, his Institute has brought considerable pressure to bear upon him, including cutting off all his research money for 2008, taking away his research students, and threatening to remove him by force. They have now announced that his group will be shut down at the end of 2009. We demand that Christian Vélot and his group must be allowed to continue their independent research. In particular, his entire research funding must be restored and he must be permitted to remain in his laboratory at least until the end of his current contract, i.e. until the end of 2009. We also demand that the authorities pay serious attention to threats to the freedom of expression of scientists and we demand that there should be legal protection for whistle blowers, as has been agreed in principle at the Grenelle de l'Environnement. This petition will be sent to the authorities of the Université Paris-Sud, to the Head of the Department of Life Sciences of the CNRS, and also to Valérie Pécresse, the Minister of Higher Education and Research, Jean-Louis Borloo, Minister of Ecology, Development and Sustainable Management, and Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, Secretary of State for Ecology at the Ministry of Ecology, Development and Sustainable Management.

Ron Paul is Not Quitting The Race

by Alan Stang

I have just returned from a monster Ron Paul rally in Lake Jackson, Texas. The hall held about 1,000 people and was so full they had to close the doors. The crowd outside was almost as big, so Dr. Ron had to speak both inside and outside. He assured us that he is not – is not – is not quitting the national race. Of course the enemy is trying to persuade you that he is, trying to discourage you. If you discourage yourself, you are doing exactly what they want.......

Hold the Line for America

by Lynn Stuter

What has happened is that Ron Paul has had to address a serious threat to his congressional seat in his district. While Ron Paul was assured that a run against his seat would not be made while he was campaigning for president, that assurance proved false. Quite obviously, the individual seeking to unseat Ron Paul in his congressional district was put up to declaring his candidacy because Ron Paul’s candidacy for president is being far too successful and a need existed to divert Ron Paul’s attention away from his presidential bid. That the declaration to run for Ron Paul’s congressional seat was made so close to Romney’s announcement that he was suspending his campaign, is beyond coincidence.......

Arbeitsmarkt von unten statt Repressionen

12. Februar 2008

Iraq accord, U.S. bases perpetuate cycle of stupidity

Tennessean
by Saritha Prabhu

02/11/08

How’s the Iraq war doing? As wars go, this has become a back-burner war now. It is still the war a majority of Americans love to hate, but we are understandably more worried about our pocketbooks now, and our borders. Besides, the surge, we tell ourselves, is working, is it not? Which kind of lets us off the hook from thinking too much about the war. Meanwhile, a weird kind of codependence has sprung up between the Iraqi government and the Bush administration — the latter doesn’t want to leave Iraq, and the former wants our troops there until 2018. On another note, it makes for some sad commentary that the Democratic-led Congress hasn’t shown much interest in holding hearings to investigate prewar intelligence. It is universally believed that the Iraq war was started and perpetuated by lies, but those who have the power to investigate are basically saying, ‘Let bygones be bygones. Now that we are in Iraq, let’s move forward’...

EU officials furious as Washington says it wants extra data on all air passengers

Guardian [UK]

02/11/08

The US administration is pressing the 27 governments of the European Union to sign up for a range of new security measures for transatlantic travel, including allowing armed guards on all flights from Europe to America by US airlines. The demand to put armed air marshals on to the flights is part of a travel clampdown by the Bush administration that officials in Brussels described as “blackmail” and “troublesome”, and could see west Europeans and Britons required to have US visas if their governments balk at Washington’s requirements...

The US-NATO Preemptive Nuclear Doctrine

Trigger a Middle East Nuclear Holocaust to Defend "The Western Way of Life"

By Michel Chossudovsky

The controversial NATO sponsored report entitled "Towards a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World: Renewing Transatlantic Partnership". calls for a first strike use of nuclear weapons. The preemptive use of nukes would also be used to undermine an "increasingly brutal World" as a means to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction.
