Adam Zagorin, of Time Magazine, reports: "in 2005, CIA officials ordered the destruction of videotapes depicting the harsh interrogation of prisoners in the agency's secret overseas prisons. CIA Director Michael Hayden admitted that in December 2007 amid a public debate over the use of 'waterboarding' on detainees and whether or not the technique - which simulates drowning - constituted torture. At that time, Hayden said that only a few prisoners were ever subjected to 'special interrogation techniques,' which can include waterboarding, and that nothing was recorded on video after 2002. That claim is now coming under additional scrutiny, in part due to a classified briefing that will be delivered to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence this Friday."

Viele Mitarbeiter bei diakonischen Einrichtungen in Deutschland können einem Medienbericht zufolge von ihrem Einkommen nicht leben. Sie müssten zusätzlich "Hartz IV" beantragen, berichtete das ARD-Politikmagazin "Report Mainz" am Montag in Baden-Baden. Dieses Sozialdumping widerspreche den Grundsätzen der Kirchen.

Von sozialen und karitativen Einrichtungen erwarten viele nicht, dass der Lohn der Angstellten oft derart niedrig ist, dass viele zusätzliche ALG II Leistungen beantragen müssen. Doch leider ist dies diakonische Realität. Das ARD Magazin "Report" berichtete in der letzten Sendung, dass Mitarbeiter, die in der Diakonie arbeiten, mehr für den Gotteslohn arbeiten und dafür Hartz IV beantragen müssen. Die Diakonie bestreitet innerhalb der Sendung die Vorwürfe nicht und gibt der Bundesregierung die Schuld an der Lohnpolitik. Angeblich seien dort die "Weichen der Lohnpolitik" gestellt worden.

Congressman Conyers Is Waiting for a Push to Start Impeachment Hearings

On Thursday, Chairman John Conyers' House Judiciary Committee held a hearing at which Attorney General Michael Mukasey said that he would not investigate torture or warrantless spying, he would not enforce contempt citations, and he would treat Justice Department opinions as providing immunity for crimes.

None of this was new, but perhaps it touched something in Conyers that had not been touched before. Following the hearing, he and two staffers met for an hour and 15 minutes with two members of Code Pink to discuss activism and impeachment, including Congressman Robert Wexler's proposal to begin impeachment hearings on Cheney.

Conyers expressed fear of what might happen followin g an impeachment, the danger of installing a Bush replacement or losing an election. He cited “potential ramifications that have not yet been examined yet” that could have the “opposite effect.” Conyers told Ellen Taylor and Manijeh Saba: "You need to be more than brave and courageous. You need to be smart."

Help us let Conyers know that the smart thing right now would be bravery and courage.

On Rosa Parks' birthday last week, Leslie Angeline began a fast for impeachment. Taylor and over 20 other activists have joined the fast [ http://afterdowningstreet.org/fast ]. Conyers has agreed to meet with Angeline to discuss impeachment on Tuesday.

The Chairman told Taylor and Saba that he is listening to several advocates for impeachment, including Liz Holtzman and D avid Swanson, and asked "So what could happen if two women pushed me over the edge?" Conyers leaned out of his chair for dramatic effect.

Let's push Conyers over the edge by flooding his office with phone calls, faxes, and Emails on Monday and Tuesday. Let him know that only impeachment hearings:
1-will make it on TV, to a broad audience,
2-will force compliance with subpoenas by eliminating "executive privilege",
3-will hold brazen criminals accountable, and

Residents opposed to a mobile phone mast in the middle of their neighbourhood are calling for support to launch a campaign against it.

They were enraged when members of Mid Sussex District Council's central area planning committee gave approval for a mast to be put next to the railway embankment and bridge in Balcombe Road, Haywards Heath.

The 10-metre telegraph-style mast with an equipment cabinet at its base will be operated by Orange PCS Ltd. The equipment will replace an existing site at Central Sussex College, on a building that is due to be demolished.

Councillors received 20 letters and two petitions signed by 22 people objecting to the mast because of health fears as well as visual impact and affect on property prices.

But it has the same defects here too. Illegal immigrants will use a mix of forgery, fraud, and corruption at any motor vehicles bureau in the country to get around REAL ID. Driving illegal immigrants further into criminality deepens the problem rather than fixing it. And should law-abiding American citizens really have to carry a national ID to get at illegal immigrants? Just who is the criminal here? Next, we were told that having a national ID was about identity fraud.
