A Pre-election Attack on Iran Remains a Possibility

By Leon Hadar

President Bush still believes the Iranians are developing nuclear weapons - and so do the Israelis. So for journalists to assume that neither the U.S. nor Israel will attack Iran before the November election could constitute another failure of imagination. Cato's Leon Hadar suggests questions the press should ask the presidential candidates about what they think the American response should be to various scenarios in the region - including a Gulf-of-Tonkin-like alleged provocation.

A flurry of pink slips fluttered over the job sector as corporate payrolls were sliced like sour pie. Bessere Arbeitsmarktpolitik statt Repressionen und Schikane gegen Erwerbslose

6. Februar 2008

The imminent threat of NAIS to our life and livelihood

National Animal Identification System: Update

by Doreen Hannes

To help get all animals (and your real estate) into the program, the USDA will be focusing on having all the breed registries roll their identification into NAIS beginning in March of 2008. I have checked out the American Dairy Goat Association site and on the USDA link it will show a beautiful placement of AIN USAXXXXXXXXXXXX (it is indeed 15 characters) for your registered dairy goats. Also of note, membership numbers are conveniently seven digit numbers. I guess it's a good thing all of my registered goats died in a horrible barn fire........

Most People Don't Want to Hear the Truth

by Doreen Hannes

Finally there are people who don't want to look at the elephant even though it's standing on their foot. We all have plenty of these people in our lives. When told about something like the NAIS with all of its effects on choice for consumers, loss of rural jobs and businesses, privacy issues, consolidation of agriculture and effects on property rights, they say things like "I want to be sure my burger is free from terrorism." These people will trade your real liberty for their false sense of security in a heartbeat. They think they get the truth from the evening news, believe that you can't understand issues without a doctorate, and that the government gives us rights. They are absolutely sure there are no absolutes.........

Is the Afghan War really good?

America’s Gulag and the good war

CounterPunch
by Chris Floyd

02/05/08

The long-running ‘progressive’ stance on America’s 21st century imperial adventures can be reduced to this simple dichotomy: Afghan war good, Iraq war bad. And for all progressives who want to be regarded as ’serious,’ the Iraq war is bad because it has distracted us from the real war, the good war, in Afghanistan. This theme has been sounded over and over by the ‘progressive’ candidates throughout the presidential campaign. It is the opinion of a sizable majority of the U.S. population, which has clearly repudiated the Iraq war but still supports the Afghan war...

The 2007 US economic slowdown

The Free Liberal
by Fred E. Foldvary

02/05/08

High rentals and purchase prices for commercial real estate increases costs for enterprise, which reduces its profits, and thus results in less economic investment. In a global economy, many enterprises cannot raise prices by as much as the increase in costs. Furthermore, even though the Fed has lowered short-term interest rates, the huge mortgage loan losses has drained banks of loanable funds, and borrowing has become riskier, which reduces credit availability. All these elements point to a crumbling of the commercial real estate market in 2008. Even in the booming Manhattan real estate market, the rise in office rentals has slowed, and the credit contraction has made it more difficult to obtain loans for purchasing condominium offices. Apartment rentals have risen as folks who now can’t buy a house are renting instead. But as unemployment rises, then those laid off will move to more crowded and less expensive dwellings, vacancies will rise, and the price of apartment buildings will fall. Less business will also result in less hotel use. Lower sales volumes will reduce rentals and prices for shopping centers...

Bush vows to veto surveillance legislation

US Committe Gov Reform Investigation-Mercury/Vaccines/Autism

UNINFORMED CONSENT, Washington DC.

Rep. Dan Burton, Chair of Gov Reform Committee comments on vaccines and mercury showing a video of an autistic child in full melt down. - Followed by Dr. Andrew Wakefield MD UK, well-respected scientist, whose discovery of the vaccine strain measles virus in the gut of autistic children set off an international frenzy from public health authorities attempting to marginalize Wakefield for their own irresponsibility in refusing to address these issues with vaccines. Many believe public health authorities have become fronts for big pharma who profit unlimited amounts from the illnesses produced by the delivery of contaminants contained in vaccines like mercury
(thimerosal).

The Boom Was a Bust for Ordinary People

In The Washington Post, Barbara Ehrenreich says: "It begins to sound a bit naughty - all this talk about the need to 'stimulate' the economy, as if we were discussing how to make a porn film. I don't mean to trivialize our economic difficulties or the need for effective government intervention, but we have to face a disconcerting fact: For years now, that strange stimulus-crazed beast, the economy, has been going its own way, increasingly disconnected from the toils and troubles of ordinary Americans."

Time Runs Out for an Afghan Held by the US

Carlotta Gall and Andy Worthington, of The New York Times, report: "Abdul Razzaq Hekmati was regarded here as a war hero, famous for his resistance to the Russian occupation in the 1980s and later for a daring prison break he organized for three opponents of the Taliban government in 1999. But in 2003, Mr. Hekmati was arrested by American forces in southern Afghanistan when, senior Afghan officials here contend, he was falsely accused by his enemies of being a Taliban commander himself. For the next five years he was held at the American military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he died of cancer on December 30th."

Judge: Bush Can't Exempt Navy in Sonar

In an Associated Press report, we learn "President Bush cannot exempt the Navy from environmental laws banning sonar training that opponents argue harms whales, a federal judge ruled Monday. Navy officials did not immediately respond to the ruling by US District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper. Mark Matsunaga, spokesman for the Navy's Pacific Fleet, headquartered in Hawaii, said officials needed time to review it before commenting."

Federal Deficits Soaring Higher, Menacing the Future

Kevin G. Hall, of McClatchy Newspapers, writes: "President Bush took office in 2001 with a budget surplus, but his final budget proposal envisions federal deficits of more than $400 billion a year for the next two years. As big as those numbers are, experts think that the administration is lowballing the deficits, and they put little stock in Bush's vow to balance the budget by 2012. 'I think the promise that it will be balanced by 2012 is ridiculous,' said Chris Edwards, the director of tax policy for the Cato Institute, a libertarian policy research group."

States Prepare for Tests of Voting System Changes

Ian Urbina, of The New York Times, writes: "after California ordered a switch to paper ballots from touch-screen voting machines for Tuesday's primary, election officials in the sprawling, 7,200-square-mile Riverside County had to decide the best way to pick up the ballots so they could be centrally counted on time: helicopter or truck? They chose land rather than air, because the last time the helicopter had been grounded by fog. But then they encountered another problem: 60,000 absentee ballots had begun to fall apart at the fold lines."

Our elected representatives are so elected to carry out the business of the people of the United States within the construct of their oath of office: to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The United States Constitution is a short but well-written document enumerating the powers and responsibilities of the three branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial, establishing the God-given rights of the people as the masters of the elected, not as the servants of the government. McCain’s doves

Los Angeles Times
by Matt Welch

02/01/08

It’s no mystery why independents gravitate toward McCain. He’s a country-first, party-second kind of guy who speaks bluntly and delights in poking fellow Republicans in the eye on issues such as campaign finance reform and global warming. But there’s a bizarre disconnect in the warm embrace between McCain and the electorate’s mavericks. They hate the Iraq war, while he’s willing to fight it for another century. The most pro-war presidential candidate in a decade is winning the 2008 GOP nomination thanks to the antiwar vote...

Is secret justice really justice?

BBC

02/05/08

MPs and human rights campaigners have warned that the government is proposing to remove juries from some inquests and keep key evidence secret. …. When the Counter Terrorism Bill was unveiled in Parliament last month the focus naturally fell on the government’s plans to hold suspects for 42 days. Few noticed a clause in the bill which would allow the home secretary to create special inquests, without juries, for “reasons of national security” or “otherwise in the public interest”...

Is something bugging you?

Independent [UK]

02/05/08

A much-needed public debate about covert surveillance has begun, thanks to the allegation that counter-terrorism police officers secretly recorded discussions between the Tooting MP, Sadiq Khan, and a constituent, Babar Ahmad. Mr Khan was visiting Mr Ahmad in Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes, where his constituent is awaiting extradition to the US on charges of supporting terrorism. If their conversation was recorded, this was a breach of the so-called “Wilson Doctrine” which forbids the secret surveillance of MPs without explicit ministerial approval. So was it a cock-up or a conspiracy?

John McCain the GOP Nominee?

AlterNet's Joshua Holland says, "According to the latest Washington Post poll, there's been a dramatic shift towards John McCain following his victory in the Florida GOP primary, and he now leads Mitt Romney by 24 points nationwide. With a number of winner-take-all primaries on the Republican side, he has a very good shot at wrapping up the nomination on February 5. It looks like conservatives - with a few raving-mad, mouth-breathing exceptions - have gone through denial, anger, bargaining and depression and come finally to accept their insubordinate nominee."
