Midsummer Market Meltdown: Is the End Near?

"When you see people making vast fortunes in this economy, it is usually a good start to ask what the government did to allow for their success. In the case of the fund managers, a substantial chunk of their business comes from pension funds," writes Dean Baker for Truthout.

An Immoral Philosophy

Paul Krugman, writing for The New York Times, argues President Bush, "wants the public to believe that government is always the problem, never the solution. But it's hard to convince people that government is always bad when they see it doing good things. So his philosophy says that the government must be prevented from solving problems, even if it can. In fact, the more good a proposed government program would do, the more fiercely it must be opposed."

Phone mast all set to get green light

by Russell Steele

A CONTROVERSIAL mobile phone mast planned for Greenock Cricket Club should be given the go ahead, say planning chiefs.

T-Mobile is seeking permission from Inverclyde Council to put up the 15-metre high tower — which would be disguised as a ‘replica flagpole’ — beside the club boundary wall in Brisbane Street.

Residents in the area are not bowled over by the plans and have lodged a string of objections in a desperate bid to have the application knocked for six.

A THIRTY metre high mobile phone mast could be put up in Holton le Clay if plans get the go ahead. The application by mobile network Hutchinson 3G has been put forward to East Lindsey District Council and is still in its consultation period which ends on Friday August 7. The mast could be built near children's nursery Busi Bodies in Lancaster Gate, just off the A16. Cindy Sheehan Returns to the Antiwar Movement

http://www.truthdig.com/avbooth/item/20070729_cindy_sheehan_returns_to_the_antiwar_movement/

Here is an excellent and very recent interview with Cindy Sheehan on YouTube. I agree with everything she says in this interview. Cindy is going to run for congress against Nancy Pelosi. I totally support her doing so.

Frank Dorrel

Here is a short message from Cindy.

This is a pretty comprehensive interview with me.

I look and sound tired, but it is because I stayed in a dive in Jersey City the night before and got up at 5:00 AM to be on Democracy Now! that morning.

I feel very healthy and strong, otherwise. Heading home for a few days r & r with my kids....then will officially announce my candidacy on August 6th in California's 8th.

Then off to the Middle East.

Love

Cindy Sheehan: "Brought to You by Boeing"

Cindy Sheehan, writing for Truthout, argues the peace and justice movement needs to rage against "the machine that is brought to us by Boeing and The Oil and Natural Gas Council, among thousands of other companies that profit off of war, and our politicians who let the machine tell them how to govern to keep that same machine well oiled, while stealing financial and human resources right out from under the noses of families and communities."

A Blurry Line Between Propaganda and News

Khody Akhavi reviews Norman Solomon's film "War Made Easy" for Inter Press Service: "'War Made Easy' does not dispute the idea that the press is self-correcting, is willing to investigate its own reporting lapses (as The New York Times did after the Judith Miller WMD scandal), and issue apologies and retractions. But it warns against the ostensible collusion between press and government. In Solomon's view, the US mainstream news media is cast as part and parcel of the Bush administration's war apparatus, an echo chamber that packages, builds support for, and, through the vehicle of 'leaked misinformation,' sells the war to the US public."

Cheney has been given vast authority by Bush

Walter F. Mondale writes for The Washington Post: "Whatever authority a vice president has is derived from the president under whom he serves. There are no powers inherent in the office; they must be delegated by the president. The real question is why the president allows this to happen."

It’s the 1930s all over again

Jittery stock markets, an economy drunk on credit, and politicians calling for varieties of dictatorship: what a sense of deja vu! Let us recall that the world went bonkers for about ten years way back when. The stock market crashed in 1929, thanks to the Federal Reserve, and with it fell the last remnants of the old liberal ideology that government should leave society and economy alone to flourish. After the federal Great Depression hit, there was a general air in the United States and Europe that freedom hadn’t worked...

Understanding the loss of freedom

Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

All Americans, if not all human beings, think they know how to define freedom. And, in all fairness most of them do understand personal freedom as it applies to themselves as individuals. However, when it comes to defining freedom in more general terms so as to allow its application to others most people, in my opinion, are sorely under-educated. Human beings have a very hard time with the concept of allowing others to be as free as they themselves feel they deserve to be... (written 07/02; posted 07/29/07)

The unintended consequences of ethanol quick fix

Christian Science Monitor
by Ray Nothstine

07/27/07

Ronald Reagan once said that the most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’ His one-liner immediately comes to mind when looking at the problems behind the federal government’s campaign to boost production of corn-based ethanol with a massive 51-cent-per-gallon subsidy. Ethanol and other biofuels are advertised as one of the main cures for our oil-thirsty economy. But it’s clear that the ethanol boom, with a major assist from Washington, is succeeding in simultaneously raising both fuel and food prices. With more than 20 percent of corn now dedicated to ethanol production, the US Department of Agriculture is projecting a record US corn crop in 2007 — along with record prices. Outside the United States, the unintended consequences of ill-considered policies promoting ethanol and other biofuel crops are already in full view. The poor, of course, are hit hardest...

Cheney takes job where Founding Fathers never meant

Tennessean
by LeWright Sikes

07/29/07

Founding Father and Vice President John Adams (1789-97) once quipped that the U.S. vice presidency was ‘the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived.’ Another, John Nance Garner (1933-41), remarked that it ‘wasn’t worth a pitcher of warm spit.’ Thus, until the mid-20th century, this relatively insignificant office has repeatedly been the butt of bad jokes and politically obscure occupants. Certainly, the framers of the Constitution did not intend for it to be a politically significant office. The vice president has only two constitutional duties. The most important is to assume the presidency if its occupant dies, resigns or, more recently, is unable to serve, under the terms of the 25th Amendment. The other is to preside over the Senate and vote in cases where there is a tie...

Rove’s diagnosis

Karl Rove, President Bush’s political lieutenant, told a closed-door meeting of 2008 Republican House candidates and their aides Tuesday that it was less the war in Iraq than corruption in Congress that caused their party’s defeat in the 2006 elections. Rove’s clear advice to the candidates is to distance themselves from the culture of Washington. Specifically, Republican candidates are urged to make clear they have no connection with disgraced congressmen such as Duke Cunningham and Mark Foley. In effect, Rove was rebutting the complaint inside the party that George W. Bush is responsible for Republican miseries by invading Iraq...

When is an accidental civilian death not an accident?

Salon
by Mark Benjamin

07/30/07

The magic number was 30,’ said Marc Garlasco, who was the Pentagon’s chief of high-value targeting at the start of the war. ‘That means that if you hit 30 as the anticipated number of civilians killed, the airstrike had to go to Rumsfeld or Bush personally to sign off.’ If the expected number of civilian deaths was less than 30, however, neither the president nor the secretary of defense needed to know. Four years later, the U.S. military still has rules in place that permit the killing of civilians in airstrikes. In fact, the number of anticipated civilian deaths is carefully appraised beforehand in a calculation known as the collateral damage estimate, which is then reviewed by commanders and military attorneys who must decide if the benefits of the strike outweigh the cost in innocent civilian lives. The military’s goal is to reconcile precision-bombing technology with the web of international treaties, including the Geneva Conventions, designed to protect civilians during wartime under a legal rubric called the Law of Armed Conflict. But what these rules mean is that killing civilians is legal — as long as the deaths are the result of a strike at a legitimate military target. And it also means that some unknown percentage of civilian deaths from airstrikes in Iraq and Afghanistan are not accidents... [editor’s note: I’ll be interested in seeing whether or not there’s a paper trail of those authorizations — shades of the evidence presented at Saddam’s trial for ordering similar murders of civilians! - TLK]

Most vote machines lose test to hackers

San Francisco Chronicle

07/28/07

State-sanctioned teams of computer hackers were able to break through the security of virtually every model of California’s voting machines and change results or take control of some of the systems’ electronic functions, according to a University of California study released Friday. The researchers ‘were able to bypass physical and software security in every machine they tested,’ said Secretary of State Debra Bowen, who authorized the ‘top to bottom review’ of every voting system certified by the state. Neither Bowen nor the investigators were willing to say exactly how vulnerable California elections are to computer hackers, especially because the team of computer experts from the UC system had top-of-the-line security information plus more time and better access to the voting machines than would-be vote thieves likely would have...

The Pearl Harbor Myth

FDR, Pearl Harbor and the U.N.

By John V. Denson

A new book entitled The Pearl Harbor Myth: Rethinking the Unthinkable by George Victor and published by Potomac Books Inc. of Washington, D.C. is well researched and gives a very clear picture of how and why the Pearl Harbor myth was created. This "patriotic political myth" states that the attack by the Japanese was unprovoked and was a surprise to the Roosevelt administration, as well as, the key military personnel in Washington; but the commanders of Pearl Harbor were at fault for not being ready.

A Global Marshall Plan for a Better World

The four richest Americans have more money than the one billion poorest people in this world at this time. Is this a recipe for a better world? The United States spends more money for military in 32 hours now than the United Nations have at its disposal for an entire year. Is this a recipe for a better world? The industrial nations use as much of coal, gas, and oil in one day as mother nature has needed 500.000 days to create.

FSC and Big Green Ancient Forest Logging Tragedy Worsens

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

By Rainforest Portal, a project of Ecological Internet, Inc. http://www.RainforestPortal.org/ July 28, 2007

TAKE ACTION Support for "certified" ancient rainforest logging crumbles further due to string of inappropriate and illegal certifications, most recently in Peru; and as Norway rejects FSC and all primary rainforest logging certification schemes

http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=peru_fsc

An ancient rainforest logging operation in Peru recently certified by Rainforest Alliance SmartWood under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme has been implicated in massive cross-border illegal logging. Workers from the Peruvian company Venao Forestal have been crossing into Brazil and building an extensive road network to illegally fell CITES-listed mahogany. The FSC certifier SmartWood has turned a blind eye to serious illegalities in logging companies it has certified under FSC as providing "responsible forest management". This illustrates yet again that a FSC seal is no guarantee of either ecological sustainability or legality. Global ecological sustainability including addressing climate change critically depends upon ending all industrial scaled ancient forest logging. The situation is rapidly emerging as a major international incident; for which WWF, Greenpeace, FSC and SmartWood are responsible... Peru is now added to a list of countries that already includes Guyana, Congo, Russia, and Indonesia, where WWF has helped massage highly controversial and sometimes illegal companies through the FSC certification process, as Greenpeace sits mute in charge of FSC's board. SmartWood has conclusively shown that they are unfit to remain as an FSC accredited certifier... Meanwhile the Norwegian government has decided that it cannot rely on any certification system including FSC to help implement its newly announced ethical procurement policy.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=peru_fsc

PRESS RELEASE "Certified" Ancient Rainforest Logging Tragedy Worsens E-Protest calls for Greenpeace and WWF to withdraw from Forest Stewardship Council and work to end ancient forest logging

July 31, 2007 By Rainforest Portal, http://www.RainforestPortal.org/ Contact: Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet, glenbarry@ecologicalinternet.org

An ancient rainforest logging operation in Peru recently certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme by Rainforest Alliance SmartWood has been implicated in massive cross-border illegal logging. Workers from the Peruvian company Venao Forestal are reported to have been crossing into Brazil and building an extensive road network to illegally fell CITES- listed mahogany. FSC and big green logging apologists including Greenpeace and WWF are facing tough questions following this and other inappropriate and illegal certifications.

Support for FSC's "certified" ancient rainforest logging continues to crumble, as calls to protect all remaining ancient forests for climate and biodiversity values intensify. Peru is now added to a list of countries that already includes Guyana, Congo, Russia, and Indonesia, where WWF has helped massage highly controversial and sometimes illegal companies through the FSC certification process, as Greenpeace sits mute in charge of FSC's board. Meanwhile Norway has rejected FSC and all primary rainforest logging certification schemes in public construction
(for more information see http://www.fsc-watch.org/ ).

Global ecological sustainability including addressing climate change depends critically upon ending all industrial scaled ancient forest logging. Ecological Internet, provider of the world's largest environmental portals and environmental action network, has intensified their protests against Greenpeace and WWF for supporting industrial scaled ancient forest logging. A few hundred thousand protest emails have been.

Dr. Glen Barry, President of Ecological Internet, explains "the litany of failed FSC ancient forest logging certifications in recent months illustrates yet again that a FSC seal is no guarantee of either ecological sustainability or legality. Many of us were excited about the idea of sustainable, equitable and just logging in the early 1990s. We envisioned community based eco-forestry management plans that tied small and medium scaled logging to strict protection of surrounding lands. Sadly, 'certified forestry' has been usurped by existing commercial loggers and their environmental apologists."

"FSC has had fifteen years to prove that industrial scale logging can be responsible and ecologically beneficial. Now with the huge list of bad certifications, it is clear it has failed. Greenpeace and WWF may have honestly believed industrial logging of ancient rainforests in an environmentally responsible manner was possible, but they have been conclusively proven wrong."

The response from Greenpeace and WWF in this David versus Goliath effort to protect all ancient forests -- including payment for avoided deforestation -- has thus far been one of stonewalling and vilifying the protestors. WWF has accused in a mocking manner the hundreds of thousands of protestors from over 100 countries of sending "spam", and are blocking many of the messages. Greenpeace replied with a terse brief response dodging the main questions of why they support ancient forest logging. Neither has responded substantively and defended their policies.

"This is a protest", explains Dr. Barry. "I am sure these environmental bureaucracies are not keen on being called out on their forest policy. But the survival of the Earth depends upon doing so. Greenpeace in particular can now feel what disruption caused by a protest feels like. I encourage all people concerned with global ecological sustainability to take action at http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=peru_fsc and to cancel their Greenpeace and WWF memberships until they withdraw from FSC and work to end ancient forest logging."

VOTE IN THE NATIONAL CHENEY IMPEACHMENT POLL

In reacting to testimony of Alberto Gonzales this week under oath, Time magazine was moved to write the headline "Gonzales Digs a Deeper Hole". It would appear the game plan is to try to lie their way through the next 18 months, to run out the clock until they can all pardon themselves on the way out the door. But the one revelation that DID come out of the Senate hearing was that Vice President Cheney, on top of everything else, had been given unprecedented authority to intervene in justice department probes. Isn't it time to express your opinion on whether Vice President Cheney should be impeached or not?

CHENEY IMPEACHMENT POLL: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

This is a justice department that is already under a giant shadow for pursuing a partisan political agenda, selectively prosecuting members of the other party while quashing investigations of loyal Bushies. The attorney firing scandal was all about installing political operatives in place of fair prosecutors with integrity. And now we find that Cheney has his hands in that too.

Gonzales said under oath that he found this troubling. We don't know what's more troubling, that Gonzales claims to know nothing about what was going on in his own department, or that he did know and just can't stop lying. But all we are asking you to do is either to vote Yes, or to vote No, on whether Cheney should be impeached. It's your choice. That is what a democracy is all about.

When Bush "commuted" Scooter Libby's prison sentence, and would not even rule out a further full pardon for him, was it to ensure his silence, to keep from implicating his boss Cheney. It was reported that Cheney had pressured Bush to do this. Was this an obstruction of justice and an impeachable offense by itself? It's your call.

When Cheney stood before the American people talking about their intelligence on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, and they had no such evidence, and they knew it, was that a high crime against the American people, lying us into a war, or not? It's your call.

When Cheney pushed to make torture official U.S. foreign policy, in defiance of the Geneva conventions, was that a good thing for our national security, or did it cost us our moral authority as a superpower? Do we defeat international terrorists by turning ourselves into monsters like they are? Is that not a violation of our own Constitutional prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment? It's your call.

When Cheney worked in the shadows to eavesdrop on American citizens without warrant, despite the fact that a special court had already been established to PERMIT such activity if justified on good cause, was that not a violation of the 4th amendment to our Constitution? Who is it who really hates our freedom? It's your call.

And what will it take to get Congress to debate these things, and actually confront a White House that is now issuing royal decrees at a record pace in the form of sweeping executive orders that presume to have legislative weight? Just this last Friday the Cheney White House REFUSED to give a member of Congress access to the classified portions of two of these recent presidential directives. They won't even let our representatives SEE the complete terms of SECRET unconstitutional orders they are rushing to put in place now.

CHENEY IMPEACHMENT POLL: http://www.usalone.com/cheney_impeachment.php

The last question we CAN answer. What it will take for Congress to act is for you to speak out, just as more than 90,000 of your fellow citizens have already in the National Cheney Impeachment Poll. Congress will not defy the will of the American people, but first that will must be expressed. Should the Constitution of the United States get a fair up or down vote? It's your call.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

The Real Roots of Poverty

by Tom DeWeese

To combat the situation, there are massive efforts underway, from churches, to charitable organizations, to local, state, federal and international government programs designed to eradicate poverty. Billions of dollars in foreign aid have been distributed to countries around the world to help feed the poor. Poverty reduction targets have been set. Yet little progress is being achieved as, in fact, the problem continues to escalate. There is an ever-growing disparity between rich and poor. Why?......

Oxycontin, Rudy Giuliani and the Sellout of America

The man considered the ‘front-runner’ in the GOP presidential race has engineered sinister alliances with multinational construction corporations and profited financially from a drug cover-up that ultimately proved deadly for some Americans. Rudolph Giuliani and his consulting company, Giuliani Partners, spent the last five years playing a key role negotiating with federal prosecutors on behalf of Purdue Pharma LP, the pharmaceutical company that made the drug.......
