Laut Gesetz bekommt derjenige einen rechtlichen Betreuer, der seine Angelegenheiten nicht mehr alleine wahrnehmen kann. Was eigentlich als Hilfe gedacht ist, birgt oft große Probleme in sich. Denn mit einem Schlag übernimmt der Betreuer alle lebenswichtigen Entscheidungen. Oft verlieren die Betroffenen alles, was ihnen lieb ist und dürfen - von Amts wegen - ihr Leben nicht mehr leben wie sie wollen.

Der Fall von Ernst Eibl und seiner Lebensgefährtin ist exemplarisch: Sie sind seit 18 Jahren ein Paar und leben zusammen. Plötzlich erleidet sie einen Schlaganfall. Das Gericht setzt einen Berufsbetreuer ein, denn Ernst Eibl gilt nicht als näherer Verwandter. Ernst Eibl versucht seine Lebensgefährtin am Krankenbett zu heiraten, dies wird ihm als Erbschleicherei ausgelegt. Der Berufsbetreuer erlässt ein Besuchsverbot, das Pflegeheim spielt dabei mit. Seit eineinhalb Jahren hat Ernst Eibl, die Frau seines Herzens nicht mehr sehen dürfen.

Erschreckend bei vielen Fällen: wehren sich die Betroffenen, werden ihre Hilferufe von den Gerichten nicht ernst genommen. Im Gegenteil - mitunter droht die Zwangseinweisung in die Psychiatrie. Was folgt, ist meist ein endloser Kampf gegen Amtsgerichte, Ärzte und Heime.
