Phone firm in mast bid

By Gordon Rogers

Mobile phone company T-Mobile has refused to give up on plans to build a new mast on an industrial estate in Abingdon - and objectors are also determined to fight on.

Two years ago, O2 (UK) wanted to put up a 15 metre transmitter at Allens Carparts in Radley Road, but was refused planning permission.

Last year, T-Mobile put forward similar proposals which met the same fate following complaints from local residents and Abingdon Town Council. Planners said the mast would be visually intrusive and too close to homes.

Undeterred, T-Mobile has come back with an alternative plan with a 12 metre-high mast. The company said it needs a new transmitter to cope with growing demand. Richard Nash from AWA, the company which is working to find a site for T-Mobile, said the new proposals were for a 12m high telegraph pole mast. Antennas would be enclosed in a shroud and there would be no external dishes.

He said: "We believe that the mast is an appropriate one for a commercial site in an urban setting. Due to its lesser bulk and height it is less intrusive than that of either the previous proposal or the existing Orange mast close to the site."

But nearby resident Ernie Wright, from Galley Fields, said: "This issue won't lie down even though we have won two previous campaigns.

"The new mast might be three metres shorter, but it will be closer to Radley Road and Thomas Reade School. We already have an ugly mast that towers over us and we don't want another."

Mr Nash said the new mast would be partly screened by a mature tree that would provide a backdrop to the mast. When seen from nearby homes it would be almost directly in line with the trunk of the tree.

He said several other sites on the estate had been discounted either because there was insufficient room or the landowner was not willing to accommodate a site.

He added: "The proposed site is in a scrapyard. The siting of an appropriately designed mast would not have any more impact on adjacent residential properties in terms of disturbance. We looked at sharing space on the existing Orange mast but there's not enough room."

Mr Nash said the company had contacted local councillors and Rush Common and Kingfisher schools and was prepared to widen the consultation process. The Vale of White Horse District Council is looking at T-Mobile's latest proposals and a report will be drawn up for councillors to consider.

Bush's "Magic" Formula: The Rich Get Richer

Larry Beinhart writes: "You may have been hearing that the Dow Jones Index is at an all-time high. It's true. However, it is only 16 percent higher than the day George Bush came into office. By comparison, when Clinton left office the Dow was 320 percent higher than when he came into office. It's a very rough measure, of course, and there are many others. But by that measure, during the Clinton years, investment in America's leading business had grown more than three times over. Under Bush, it's only grown 16 percent in six years. Since the consumer price index is up 18 percent over the same period when the new all-time high is adjusted for inflation, growth is effectively below zero."

Bush's "Magic" Economic Formula

"Supposedly we are in a sustained economic recovery and have been since 2002," says Larry Beinhart. "Part of this is Bush hot air and the Republican Noise Machine, which the media quote verbatim. By a certain measure, however, it's real. But the recovery has some really strange features."

Plame Wilson's undercover CIA identity was leaked to a handful of reporters by senior Bush administration officials. Torture in the service of arms and oil

Chris Floyd Website
by staff

05/31/07

[O]ne of the underlying truths about George W. Bush’s gulag: He does not have people tortured in order to extract information from them; he has them tortured in order to manufacture false information which can be used to advance his agenda of aggressive war and domestic tyranny. … There are of course many aspects to the hydra-headed Terror War, many motives driving its various players, much chaos and contradiction in its seething cross-currents. But you can always find the inextricably linked interests of arms and oil at the center of the blood-choked murk. And you will also always find leaders — fine, upstanding, God-called champions of civilization — willing to countenance anything — torture, deception, aggression, corruption — to advance those interests...

America’s Iraq strategy boosts US combat losses

Christian Science Monitor

06/01/07

May’s spike in the American death toll in Iraq is the result of the administration’s new approach in Iraq — as much as it is the enemy’s own ’surge’ of attacks against US forces. In strategic terms, it’s called taking it to the enemy. But analysts warn that if the number of US casualties continues at their current high level through the summer, that could raise questions about whether the strategy is actually working. May has already been difficult — the third-deadliest month since the Iraq war began. In a candid briefing Thursday, Army Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of Multinational Corps-Iraq, warned that the situation would be difficult in the months ahead. But the rising number of Americans killed comes as a result not only of insurgent activity but also from US operations in places that forces have not been before...

These are the dog days of the War Party; their cadre is deserting them in droves, the public hates their guts, and members of their own party — I refer, of course, to the Republican Party — are rising in rebellion, if only out of fear of the public’s wrath. The investigation into their shenanigans has hardly begun with the indictment and conviction of Scooter Libby, and the prospect of jail time for a few more of the War Party’s leading figures cannot fill them with anything other than trepidation. The American people are waking up, and their awakening has been rude in the extreme and is bound to get ruder with each passing day as the ’surge’ yields a higher casualty rate and the Iraqi insurgency plays havoc with our pretensions to being the New Rome. Yet the War Party still has a few cards to play...

Inspector hangs up on phone mast bid

Jun 4 2007

By Dave Black, The Journal

A bid to erect a 50ft-high mobile phone mast close to Hadrian's Wall has been rejected by a Government planning inspector.

T-Mobile wanted to put up the timber communications tower in a field near Heddon-on-the-Wall, less than 200m from the world heritage site.

The location - near the junction of the A69 and the old Military Road - is also close to the Hadrian's Wall footpath.

Planning permission was refused by local councillors last year because of the mast's likely impact on the scheduled ancient monument and its setting in open countryside.

Now T-Mobile's appeal against the decision has been thrown out by planning inspector Wenda Fabian, who says she is unconvinced that a less sensitive site cannot be found. The proposed location lies within the protected green belt and the Hadrian's Wall official world heritage site, where planning policy places the highest priority on preserving the character and appearance of the surrounding countryside.

T-Mobile designed the mast and associated equipment and fencing to minimise its visual impact on the setting of the Roman Wall.

The company also claimed it had investigated eight alternative sites in a bid to plug a gap in mobile phone coverage in the area, all of which were either unsuitable or unavailable.

In her decision letter, Ms Fabian says the mast would be built on the highest point of a rising field and would be clearly visible from some distance away, including on the Military Road and two public footpaths.

She says it would also impact on the setting of the Roman Wall and has been unable to find the `very special circumstances' required to allow a mast to be built in such a sensitive area.

She feels T-Mobile has not held sufficient discussions on the possibility of sharing a nearby pylon on which fellow operator O2 already has equipment.

Last night Coun Peter Jackson, who represents Heddon-on-the-Wall on both Castle Morpeth Borough and Northumberland County Councils, said: "This is such a sensitive location, next to a world heritage site, that people expected it would be protected by planning policy. We are pleased to see these policies working and doing what they are supposed to do, preserving the open countryside."

Precedent set

Anti-wind farm campaigners last night pointed to the Government inspector's refusal of the 50ft phone mast, arguing the same principles should underpin any decision on bids to build turbines in similarly sensitive areas.

The Journal revealed recently how Frank and Clare Dakin turned down a potential £6m in income from a wind farm development on their land because of the effect it would have on the local community and the surrounding landscape at Duddo near Berwick - including the ancient Duddo Five Stones and the Duddo Tower.

A spokesman for Moorsyde Action Group, which is fighting plans for 10 turbines west of Berwick, said: "This will raise some interesting questions about Plenmeller, where the developer is planning up to 24 turbines in plain sight of Hadrian's Wall. Here in North Northumberland, we have a raft of applications for dozens of turbines. At the same time, we have an historic landscape which must also be protected."

Michael Moore on Oprah Tuesday to talk about "Sicko," opening in the USA June 29

Michael Moore on Oprah Tuesday

Michael Moore will appear on Oprah tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5, and will present, for the first time on television, scenes from his new film, "Sicko." Oprah will interview Michael about the movie and the attention it's receiving before its release (opening day everywhere is June 29). The theme of Oprah's show is the one film you must see this summer -- "Sicko" -- and the one book you must read (Cormac McCarthy's "The Road"). Oprah loved Michael's film and wants to make health care for all one of her main missions this year.

So set your recorders for Oprah tomorrow, Tuesday!

Thanks, Dr. Kohls: I "only wish" Oprah was "really concerned" about healthcare!!!

I wrote to her more than once regarding close, chronic, prolonged EMF/EMR exposures at night due to electric meters, electric appliances and some telephone equipment. Michael Moore received appeals from me on numerous occasions.

Not only did the American Cancer Society send me an article (1993) from "USA Today" with a "radiation file number," but the article clearly recommended moving electrical items away from close proximity to one's bed. Items mentioned included electric clocks, electric blankets and more........

As I often mention, I have the booklet re EMF's that was written by utilities' communications' experts with a publication date of 2001 that suggests one may want to replace electric clocks with battery-operated or wind-up clocks. As far as I know, this booklet was distributed only to Florida Power & Light and Sacramento Power & Light before publication was stopped.

While Oprah does allow some limited coverage re EMF/EMR exposures, it is obvious that she and others, including Michael Moore (unless his movie, "Sicko," surprises me -- I won't view it unless it does contain warnings re electric and telephone items close to beds) "deliberately avoid" simple, straightforward facts that pertain to cost-free methods of significantly reducing electrical pollution/toxicity at night. As you and others know, children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to any toxic exposures.

Considering the large numbers of "uninsured children" in the U.S., as well as considerable challenges faced by the elderly -- we have huge increases in numbers of autistic-related disorders as well as Alzheimers -- not to mention similar large increases in many other health problems, I don't give a whole lot of credit to any movie or talk show personality who won't address the issue of "prudent avoidance re low level EMF/EMR exposures in bedrooms."

I informed Oprah that the homes she helped provide Katrina victims on Angel Street in Houston have electric meters mounted to the outside of childrens' bedroom walls. I never received a response.......

Best wishes and take care - Joanne

"SiCKO": The Profits of Life and Death

Michael Moore's documentary film, "SiCKO," focuses on the more than 250 million people who have insurance, but highlights those who are betrayed by it in their time of need. The horror of Moore's expose is not that health insurance companies are posting too much of a profit; it's that they are doing so at the expense of American lives. A coalition of nurses and doctors will co-host the film nationwide to promote bills in Congress that would fundamentally change the profit-based health system.

Just one week before the release of Michael Moore's new documentary about the American health care industry, Moore traveled to Washington to push for universal health care. Losing the Economy to Mythology

Over Hill, Over Dale: The Militarization of Culture

The glorification of war is nearly ubiquitous in the culture. You see it in the vehicles we drive, aggressive behavior, excessive national pride, flag waving, military style clothing, movies, video games; and now-television commercials. The American consumer is essentially becoming a piece of computer hardware programmed to download propaganda and to execute its commands without thinking.

On the surface, it all makes sense. A group of radical Islamists fighting the Lebanese army shoot on amid the ruins of Nahr el-Bared refugee camp.

Radiation fears for schools with wi-fi

Sunday, June 03, 2007

By Joe Oliver

Education Minister Caitriona Ruane has been urged to HALT the expansion of wireless internet networks in schools over fears they could be exposing kids to cancer.

Walter Graham, chairman of the Northern Ireland Against Masts lobby group, is also demanding that systems already in use should be switched off.

The call came after it was revealed that classroom 'wi-fi' networks give off three times as much radiation as a typical mobile phone mast.

Wi-fi works by transmitting information via radio waves from a telephone line to a computer and back.

Wireless networks have been installed in 19 schools here and another 30 have opted to purchase the system.

The controversy surrounding the hi-tech system was recently highlighted on BBC's Panorama when researchers found the maximum signal strength from just one laptop was three times higher than that of a mobile phone mast.

Scientists believe children may be more vulnerable to radio-frequency radiation emissions than adults because their skulls are thinner.

Mr Graham fears the wi-fi revolution could be a ticking health timebomb.

"The authorities say it's safe but there has been no long-term studies to prove this. It's like having a phone mast in the classroom because small transmitters are attached to the laptops and therefore close to a child's body.

"We don't need this system because computers work fine through the conventional telephone."

He is hoping to recruit a number of international experts to make a presentation to the Assembly.

"It is vital MLAs should have this information and equally important that the minister halts the expansion of wi-fis in our schools until the health effects are known and understood," added Mr Graham.

A spokesman for Ms Ruane said: "The British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) recommended the deployment of wireless networks in schools.

"On the basis of current evidence and expert safety advice, Becta believes that there is no need to change its advice and discourage the use of wireless networks."

Letter from Sarah Dacre to Ben Goldacre for info.

To: Dr Ben Goldacre
16.6.07

I have a copy of your response to Paul and other individuals linked to the ES debate and your stance.

For the record, as an electro sensitive (medically proven overseas) I shall restrict my already limited computer access time to assisting the burgeoning number of ES/EHS cases from around the world by circulating solutions, which can help the condition. There are many thousands of ES logged onto various data bases and we all know what worsens the condition, it is such a simple process of elimination.

You would be well advised to study the relevant scientists such as Dr George Carlo's studies and those of Professor Olle Johansson rather than haranguing various ES individuals. I don't notice any appreciation from you for any correspondence from individuals already limited in their daily exposure to EMR. Many others are completely unable to access computers at all, 100% of the time and cannot respond to you or even participate in ludicrous psychologically driven experiments. The emphasis once placed on seeking subtle biological effects will find an explanation for ES.

I shall leave the banter about provocation studies (aka what will keep ES in a box for another 5-8 years) to those who are more able to spend hours on a computer.

Please do not expect to hear from me again.

With kind regards

S A Dacre

Subject: EHS in Canada

Hello Ben,

Please allow me to share my experience with you. I am a unversity lecturer in drama and postcolonial studies at a Canadian University, with a PhD from Trinity College, Dublin. I understand from some colleagues here that although you are advocating compassion for people living with EHS, you are also suggesting that there is no evidence to link non-thermal effects of radiofrequency or other electromagnetic emissions to any adverse effects on human health.

Although I would happily send you research that confirms such effects
(and please let me know if you haven't seen any studies and I can point you in the right direction: the abstracts page at http://www.emfacts.com is a good place to start), I think what I would like to tell you is based on my own experience: I have had to literally move from house and home to live in the wilderness so as to simply be able to sleep at night as a result of sensitivity to cell phone tower signals.

I personally know many other people who have the same experience.

I have invested in expensive detection equipment chosen for me by engineering colleagues that have confirmed which spots are 'hot' and which not. Although I do not presume to fully understand the biophysiology of the matter, I am a trained researcher and know false positive correlations when I see them. In fact, I was very cautious 'coming out' as it were with my own experience in case I was somehow invoking a hypochondriac response to supposed sources of incitants. Five years of experience, as well as various improvements as a result of certain health regimes, have taught me that my initial intuitions on the subject were correct.

Another source of testimonials is the Black on White document geenrated by the Swedish Association for Electrosensitivity at http://www.feb.se/index_int.htm . It includes 400 testimonials form EHS sufferers. Please note that Gro Harlem Bruntland, a former World Health Organization director left her post there as a result of her electrosensitivity. The man who developed the cell phone for Ericsson is now living in northern scandinavia out of radio and cell tower range as a result of the EHS he developed on the job.

Although it may go against current orthodoxy, I am convinced that before long, more studies that demonstrate non-thermal effects will find their way to the media. Again, thanks for the compassion, but if there's anything I can do to lead to to studies different than the ones you are reading, please let me know.

Clinical Data on EMR Exposures

I send in a response to the BMJ!! Don't know if they will publish it. Lets see!!

Sarah

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/eletters/334/7606/1249#168843

Has anyone read the results of the REFLEX report, 2004? Twelve institutes in seven countries have found genotoxic effects and modified expressions on numerous genes and proteins after Radio frequency and extremely low frequency EMF exposure at low levels, below current international safety guidance, to living cells in-vitro. These results confirm the likelihood of long-term genetic damage in the blood and brains of users of mobile phones and other sources of electromagnetic fields. The idea behind the REFLEX study was to attempt replicate damage already reported to see if the effects were real and whether, or not, more money should be spent of research into the possible adverse health effects of EMF exposure. They concluded that in-vitro damage is real and that it is important to carry out much more research, especially monitoring the long-term health of people. http://www.verum-foundation.de/cgi-bin/content.cgi?id=euprojekte01

Dr Lai and Singh had previously found double strand DNA breaks in rat brains exposed to 2.45 GHz radiation Lai H, Singh NP. (1996) DNA Single- and double-strand DNA breaks in rat brain cells after acute exposure to low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. Int J Radiat Biol 69:513-521

Then there's the Ecolog report, 2000. A review of 220 pieces of peer reviewed and published research showing clear evidence for cancer and genetic damage from exposures below the guidelines. http://www.hese-project.org/hese-uk/en/niemr/ecologsum.php

Not to mention the Stewart Report, 2000, itself which states
1.18 ..there is now evidence, however , which suggests that there may be biological effects occurring at exposures below these guidelines..;

More evidence has accumulated since then. I ask you if microwave radiation were a drug and in lab tests it was found that double strand DNA breaks were occurring as a result of exposure in vitro and to animals in vivo, would it be ethical/allowed under guidelines to go on and test humans?

Moreover even if one did decide to go ahead and do provocation studies, wouldn't it be rather unusual to subject test subjects 'claiming EHS' to signals in an unshielded room in the centre of London as was the case in the Rubin study?

Provocation studies may have their place if properly done but this is merely tinkering at the edges. There is plenty of research (not mentioned here) including new epidemiological evidence showing adverse health effects from exposure to microwave radiation at current levels to justify reducing exposure levels as has been done in other countries.

Re: [Masts] FW: BMJ

The position being taken by Goldacre in his commentary that provocation studies are definitive in assessing electromagnetic radiation (EMR) health risks is simply incorrect. Current information on the pathological mechanism involved in EMR-related disease makes clear that laboratory constructs that do not have close approximation to real-world exposures are of little value in assessing these risks.

For the past five years, through our Safe Wireless Initiative project, we have operated the only post-market surveillance database in the world systematically collecting symptom information from thousands of patients suffering from the effects of various types of EMR exposure. In addition, we coordinate a network of clinicians who regularly share information about their experiences treating patients with these conditions, another important and unique resource. Thus, we do not rely solely on self-reported information but have corroboration from treating doctors. It is noteworthy that our post-market surveillance registry will open in the UK soon. This is an important public health step because in the UK, there are no reliable data on the incidence and prevalence of EMR- related conditions. With no real data, speculations are all the more misinformed.

We regularly share summary information from our registry database in various fora around the world, including a February 2007 presentation at the House of Commons, for the benefit of clinicians and patients alike. Goldacre seems to be relying only on one type of data in his assessment, while ignoring clinical realities.

Overall, our post-market surveillance data show patterns that suggest an emerging medical and public health problem.

There are symptom and pathology similarities among patients suffering from electro-hypersensitivity, multiple chemical sensitivities, alcohol- related disease as well as neuro-behavioral and learning disorders. We are now referring to the symptom constellations as Membrane Sensitivity Syndrome (MSS) and the increase in reports of symptoms consistent with MSS associated by patients with various EMR exposures has dramatically increased over the past 24 months.

It is noteworthy that concurrently in the past 24 months, the penetration of mobile phones has tripled globally, from one billion to three billion. WiFi has reached the highest penetration in history. Satellite radio is not far behind. All of these technologies rely on information-carrying radio waves, the trigger for non-thermal adverse biological responses and the cascade toward MSS.

In a majority of MSS cases, when EMR is removed from the patient’s environment, their acute symptoms subside. This is an important observation and indeed represents one of the Koch-Henle postulates for causation: If when the exposure is removed, the effect is diminished, there is evidence for cause and effect.

Pathology and experimental findings support a mechanistic underpinning: an environmentally induced genetic change that renders daughter cells to carry membrane sensitivity characteristics with most symptoms directly or indirectly the result of consequent disrupt of intercellular communication.

Therapeutic intervention regimens designed around known EMR mechanisms of harm have positively shown varying degrees of clinical symptom amelioration, another support for the causal hypothesis, but more importantly, a ray of hope for those afflicted and debilitated by these conditions.

It is a fact that every serious public health problem man has faced has first been identified through clinical observations, the historically confirmed first line of evidence for preventing epidemic spread of disease. It is a disservice to clinicians and patients when uninformed speculation serves to lessen the acuity with which important early signs that can alleviate suffering are seen and heeded.

BMJ new contra comment

Dr Elliott at Manchester University has been working for a number of years on Calcium receptors (and one of his published papers actually reports an electrical effect). I think those claiming the existence of EHS should point him to the studies at Loma Linda in the 1970s (e.g. Bawin, Adey et al 1976) which first showed that exposure to weak power frequency and RF electric fields caused significant calcium efflux in live cat brains. This approach is likely to be more persuasive than slagging off Mr Goldacre, a non scientist whose value judgements are not likely to be well supported by the peer reviewed literature. One plausible explanation for the disturbance to cognitive and neurological function alleged by EHS EMF-exposees is that disruption of calcium homeostasis may lead to neurological bioeffects, since [Ca2+]i is an accepted first and second messenger, and for that reason its cytosolic concentration is normally very low compared with other biological ions. Enforced release from calcium stores such as calmodulin could therefore have adverse and possibly hyperaesthetic effects.

Let's try to bring a little science into this debate!
