„Abgeordnete sollen wie Richter, Polizisten und andere Beamte keine Geldgeschenke annehmen dürfen!“

Was für Exekutive und Judikative gilt, muss erst recht auch für die Legislative gelten: ein kategorisches Verbot, Geldgeschenke anzunehmen. Das fordert die bayerische ödp in ihrer am 30. April abgeschlossenen landesweiten Petitionsaktion. Die Unterschriften werden am kommenden Freitag, 4. Mai im Landtag eingereicht.

„Die ödp will erreichen, dass Abgeordnete wie Richter, Polizisten und andere Beamte keine Geldgeschenke annehmen dürfen. Außerdem soll der Landtag den Anstoß zu einer Bundesratsinitiative Bayerns geben, um Parteispenden juristischer Personen (Konzerne und Verbände) zu verbieten“, so ödp-Landesvorsitzender Bernhard Suttner. Derzeit dürfen Landtagsabgeordnete nach den geltenden Verhaltensregeln Geldgeschenke bis zu einer Höhe von 10.000 Euro annehmen, ohne dass dies überhaupt veröffentlicht werden muss. Nach Art. 115 der Bayerischen Verfassung (Petitionsrecht) muss sich nun der Landtag mit der ödp-Initiative befassen.

Installing radar for tracking incoming missiles in the Czech Republic and anti-missile interceptors in Poland could do more harm than good. Alpha Magazine reported that the top 25 hedge fund earners garnered an average of $570 million in 2006, up from $362 million in 2005. The burgeoning hedge fund and private equity industries are both a cause and a symptom of a dangerously lopsided America. Jury selection in the Jose Padilla case is now under way in federal district court in Miami, but the trial is nothing more than a sham. Why? Because no matter how the jury rules, Padilla is almost certain to remain incarcerated for a long time. If Padilla is convicted by the jury, the judge will likely sentence him to serve much of the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary for having conspired to violate federal criminal laws against terrorism. On the other hand, if Padilla is acquitted, the U.S. military is likely to exercise its post-9/11-acquired power to declare Americans (and foreigners) ‘enemy combatants’ in the war on terror and throw Padilla back into a military dungeon. That is where he was before the government, as part of a clever legal maneuver that was obviously designed to avoid Supreme Court review of Padilla’s request for habeas-corpus relief, converted him from an ‘enemy combatant’ in the war on terror to a federal-court criminal defendant charged with violating federal terrorism laws...

In the Sunday, April 29th issue of The Washington Post, Robert Kagan, co-founder of neo-conservative "Project For A New American Century," used his bully pulpit at the paper to heap lavish praise upon Illinois Democratic Senator Barack Obama for a speech on U.S. foreign policy that the latter delivered to the Chicago Council on Global Affairs late last week.

Kagan, a prominent "neo-con", noted many of Senator Obama's positions on U.S. foreign policy, for whatever minor disagreements he has with them, are not much different from what he supports: bigger defense budgets, increasing the size of the military, an endless "war on terrorism," and "pre-emptive military action" to defend "our vital interests."

The city's pioneering wireless network was introduced by “stealth”, according to families who say they were given no choice over having transmitters near their homes.

The criticism comes as a national debate rages over concerns that the wireless technology may pose a health risk. Wi-Fi networks emit radiation in the same way as mobile phones and masts, and campaigners are calling for comprehensive research to be undertaken into the impact they have on health.

The transmitters, installed in Norwich city centre as part of the £1.1m Norfolk OpenLink project launched in August last year, are rated at 0.1 watts. This is reasonably low compared to the average mobile handset, which emits radiation pulses up to 2W.

Norfolk County Councillor Andrew Boswell, who has been contacted by several families worried about the proximity of transmitters to their homes, said people have a choice about owning a mobile phone - but not about the siting of Wi-Fi transmitters.

“The residents were very concerned for all sorts of reasons and not knowing what the health risks were,” said Mr Boswell.

“The transmitters aren't very powerful, but if we get a full-blown scheme the power will be increased, and Ofcom could potentially allow them up to 10W. I think they should do the consultation they should have done in the first place and wherever a transmitter is they should make it clear to the residents they have put the transmitter there and speak with them about their concerns and reassure them. They have been very cavalier in the way they have carried out this project in respect of people's health.”

Norwich is one of the first places in the country to have a free Wi-Fi service, with more than 200 aerials attached to lampposts providing coverage so people can log on to the internet through laptops anywhere in the city.

Ann Carey, project director for Norfolk Openlink, said: “It is important to stress from the outset that the project complies with all current health and safety standards.

“We certainly would not have implemented the project if there had been any proven risk on the safety of Wi-Fi and presently there is no guidance from the Department of Health and other professional bodies that says Wi-Fi is unsafe. We gained formal approval from cabinet before proceeding with the project and have also kept members of the county council updated throughout the process. Members could have scrutinised the proposals, but did not do so.”

Recent research has shown radiation from mobiles and masts could be linked to cancer in people living nearby.

It is believed the Professional Association of Teachers will this week write to Education Secretary Alan Johnson to demand an official inquiry because of its own concerns over Wi-Fi.

The networks are banned in Salzburg in Austria, while Stowe School, in Buckinghamshire, removed Wi-Fi from part of its buildings after a teacher developed headaches and nausea.

Last November, Dr Ian Gibson, a long-time supporter of the Evening News Put Masts On Hold campaign and a cancer expert, said he wanted more research to be done on wireless technology after some schools elsewhere in the county ditched their wireless networks.

Children warned over laptop computers:

Children should be discouraged from putting their laptops on their lap when using wireless internet connections because of potential health risks - an expert has warned.

Professor Lawrie Challis, who heads the committee on mobile phone safety research, said youngsters should be monitored as public concern continues over emissions from wi-fi networks.

He said children should be kept a safe distance from the embedded antennas on wi-fi enabled laptops until more research is carried out.

“With a desktop computer, the transmitter will be in the tower,” he said. “This might be perhaps 20cms from your leg and the exposure would then be around one per cent of that from a mobile phone.”

But he said if a laptop was placed straight on the lap when using wi-fi, people could be around 2cm from the transmitter, and receiving comparable exposure to that from a mobile phone.

“Since we advise that children should be discouraged from using mobile phones, we should also discourage children from placing their laptop on their lap when they are using wi-fi,” he said.

In 2005 the Health Protection Agency (HPA) published a report - Mobile Phones and Health 2004 - which supported the need for future research of all new technologies including wi-fi.

The organisation said in a statement: “Wi-fi devices are of very low power much lower than mobile phones. The HPA and (our chairman) Sir William Stewart have always pressed for more research into these new technologies.”

DAVID Laws MP has declared his support for a law restricting the placing of mobile phone masts.

The Bill aims to bring mobile phone masts under strict planning control and bring in the 'precautionary principle', giving extra safeguards for schools, homes, and medical facilities from the risk of excessive radiation.

David Laws said: "The positioning of phone masts has upset many people in Somerset as masts have been put up close to schools, hospitals and residential areas.

"This Bill will allow planning authorities to take account of health concerns and will require the industry to produce more evidence about the radiation emitted, and to justify the need for each mast."

As courageously drafted by Dennis Kucinich in H.Res. 333 filed just last week, the first and most central ground stated for the impeachment of Vice President Cheney was that he led the charge in fabricating a case for invasion of Iraq, based on phony weapons of mass destruction. Now almost as if it were timed to coincide with that initiative, former CIA head George Tenet reveals they knew their evidence was flimsy, erroneous and just plain bogus all along, but that Cheney just kept exaggerating the threat anyway. This is without question the most momentous issue of our time, and whether you agree that Cheney should be impeached, or not, your voice is needed to speak out now, and tell Congress what they should do about it.

You can vote yes. Or you can vote no. But we cannot remain silent.

Of course, anyone who's been honestly and fairly paying attention has known at least since the exposure of the Downing Street Minutes that we were misled into the Iraq quagmire, by an executive branch that could not be bothered with either the actual facts or a serious policy debate about them, Richard Clarke told us the same thing and he was smeared in the corporate media for his truth telling, as has every other previous lesser whistle blower. What will the contemptuous talking heads say now that the chief of the CIA at the time is another, and perhaps the most clinching, confirming witness?

Apparently what so galled Tenet enough for him to spill the beans on his own complicity (beside an O.J. scale book advance) was that the Bush administration, in its typical coward's fashion, tried in the media to pin on him the ENTIRE blame for the failure of their wrong-headed strategic debacle. "Tenet told us it was a slam dunk," Cheney pleaded on TV, as the five time military deferment king again tried to escape any public responsibility for his own primary malfeasance. But now in an astonishing twist, Tenet reveals what the words "slam dunk" actually meant in context.

In the book, Tenet confesses that he was NOT being asked at the time to vouch for the quality of the intelligence. He says he was being asked if the case could be SOLD to the American people. That's all they cared about, not whether there was any actual support for their arguments, but whether they thought they could get away with bum rushing the rest of us. So when Tenet said "slam dunk", what he MEANT was they were sure they would be able to stuff their cooked intelligence down our throats.

This is incredibly damning stuff. Tenet has unleashed the intelligence community equivalent of "If I Helped Them Do It". They were not having a policy debate about the strength of the case against Iraq, they were having a sales meeting of con men to plot how far they could go in cheating the American people out of our lives and the contents of our treasury. And they were determined to go all the way. "Slam dunk" was not an intelligence assessment, it was a SALES PROJECTION of their fraudulent product.

Tenet was neither the victim of a bad rap, nor the unwitting excuse. Instead he was a willing co-conspirator, happy enough to play along with the war fever and collect his ill-gotten medal of freedom while mooching all the other various perks of the power they seized. But the criminal mastermind of the whole sordid affair was none other than Richard B. Cheney. And that truth can no longer be hidden by even this most secretive of administrations. What will it take for Congress to impeach him and put him on trial in the Senate for highest of all high crimes, launching a war of immoral and unjustifiable aggression, that has cost more Americans their lives than died on 9/11 (and upwards of a million Iraqis), based on NOTHING but deliberate and calculated lies?

ANOTHER HISTORIC STEP ON IMPEACHMENT

Sparked by an insurgency among delegates, the California Democratic Party has taken an historic step forward on the issue of impeachment. In a resolution affirmed by the full state party convention Sunday, the Democrats called on the U.S. Congress to use its subpoena power to investigate misdeeds of President Bush and Vice President Cheney – and to hold the Administration accountable “with appropriate remedies and punishment, including impeachment.” The delegate insurgency was coordinated by Progressive Democrats of America and its allies.

While Speaker Pelosi had declared impeachment “off the table,” the Democratic Party rank-and-file has demonstrated its commitment to putting the issue “on” the table. And it’s no longer just the rank-and-file: Even among the members of the convention’s Resolutions Committee (appointed by the California Party chair), the impeachment resolution was the top vote-getter (tied with one other resolution).

Coming on the heels of mass actions and resolutions across the country in support of impeachment, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s introduction of Articles of Impeachment against Cheney, this action by the powerful California Democratic Party builds on the pro-impeachment momentum.

The resolution refers to Bush and Cheney having acted in a manner “subversive of the Constitution” by. . .

1) using false information to justify the invasion of Iraq

2) authorizing “the torture of prisoners of war”

Hussein Kamel, Saddam’s son-in-law, had told the IAEA the exact opposite of what Cheney had claimed, and the IAEA had subsequently verified that General Kamel spoke the truth. So Cheney lied. Many Congresspersons knew he lied. And on the eve of Bush’s pre-emptive attack on Iraq — thanks to Scott Ritter — the mainstream media also learned that Cheney had lied. At least about what Kamel had revealed. Did Bush administration officials tell you other lies about Iraq? And did the mainstream media repeat those lies?

The political problem of the Bush administration is grave, possibly beyond the point of rescue. The opinion polls are savagely decisive on the Iraq question. About 60 percent of Americans wish the war ended — wish at least a timetable for orderly withdrawal. What is going on in Congress is in the nature of accompaniment. The vote in Congress is simply another salient in the war against war in Iraq. Republican forces, with a couple of exceptions, held fast against the Democrats’ attempt to force Bush out of Iraq even if it required fiddling with the Constitution. President Bush will of course veto the bill, but its impact is critically important in the consolidation of public opinion. It can now accurately be said that the legislature, which writes the people’s laws, opposes the war...

Sparked by an insurgency among delegates, the California Democratic Party has taken an historic step forward on the issue of impeachment. In a resolution affirmed by the full state party convention Sunday, the Democrats called on the U.S. Congress to use its subpoena power to investigate misdeeds of President Bush and Vice President Cheney –and to hold the Administration accountable “with appropriate remedies and punishment, including impeachment. The delegate insurgency was coordinated by PDA and our allies.

While Speaker Pelosi had declared impeachment “off the table," the Democratic Party rank-and-file has demonstrated its commitment to putting the issue “on" the table. And it’s no longer just the rank-and-file: Even among the members of the convention’s Resolutions Committee (appointed by the California Party chair), the impeachment resolution was the top vote-getter (tied with one other resolution).

Coming on the heels of mass actions and resolutions across the country in support of impeachment, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s introduction of Articles of Impeachment against Cheney, this action by the powerful California Democratic Party builds on the pro-impeachment momentum.

The resolution refers to Bush and Cheney having acted in a manner “subversive of the Constitution?by. . .

1) using false information to justify the invasion of Iraq

2) authorizing “the torture of prisoners of war

3) authorizing wiretaps on U.S. citizens without obtaining a warrant

4) disclosing the name of an undercover CIA operative

5) suspending the historic Writ of Habeas Corpus by ordering the indefinite detention of so-called enemy combatants

6) signing statements used to ignore or circumvent portions of over 750 Congressional statutes

The resolution ends by calling for “vigorousinvestigation" and “appropriate remedies and punishment, including impeachment."
