Could Global Capitalism Destroy Itself?

Timothy Garton Ash writes: "Does this lack of any clear ideological alternative mean that capitalism is secure for years to come? Far from it. With the unprecedented triumph of globalized capitalism over the last two decades come new threats to its own future. They are not precisely the famous 'contradictions' that Marx identified, but they may be even bigger. For a start, the history of capitalism over the last hundred years hardly supports the view that it is an automatically self-correcting system. As George Soros (who should know) points out, global markets are now more than ever constantly out of equilibrium - and teetering on the edge of a larger disequilibrium. Again and again, it has needed the visible hands of political, fiscal and legal correction to complement the invisible hand of the market. The bigger it gets, the harder it can fall."

Was 2006 a Turning-Point Election?

Steve Fraser writes: "All media eyes have turned toward the presidential election of 2008. Like the headlights of an onrushing train, it mesmerizes. Every news bulletin about the latest bloodbath in Iraq, each ominous forewarning of a face-off with Iran, the endless dirge of abandonment and despair issuing from New Orleans, the daily register of those cut loose from any semblance of a social safety net, public or private, and each new official confirmation that the Earth is reaching a boiling point compels us to anticipate the 2008 election with fear and trembling, and with the greatest expectations. Something momentous might happen, then. Haven't we already seen the first signs of that in the extraordinary electoral outcome of November 2006?"

Fingers in the Wind

William Fisher writes: "We all know why our public servants are held in such low esteem: earmarks, bribery, corruption, obfuscation, et cetera. But there is another practice just as cynical, just as toxic, and just as widespread. It's called 'pandering'. And it's not only practiced, but widely accepted as 'professional politics' by office-seekers and their campaign staffs, and apparently by voters."

GOVERNMENT ACCESS TO PHONE RECORDS

AND MORE FROM CRS

The statutes that enable the government to gain legal access to telephone records, whether for law enforcement or intelligence purposes, are examined in a newly updated report from the Congressional Research Service.

The report also discusses prohibitions on access to, or disclosure of, such records, along with exceptions to the prohibitions.

"Outrageous" Armed Raid on Iraqi Journalists' Union

The International Federation of Journalists today condemned as "outrageous and inexcusable" the action of American soldiers who carried out an armed raid on the Baghdad offices of the Iraq Syndicate of Journalists. United States soldiers caused destruction and havoc last night when they broke into the offices of the Syndicate, which is a member of the IFJ's global union network. They destroyed furniture, ransacked the offices, arrested state-employed security guards, and confiscated 10 computers and 15 small electricity generators destined for the families of killed journalists.

Residents lose battle to stop phone mast

By Sarah Harker

DEFLATED residents have lost an ongoing battle to prevent the erection of a controversial mobile phone mast in Cinnamon Brow.

Despite councillors fighting on their behalf to block the mast, a Government inspector has upheld an appeal from Vodafone, which means the mast can go ahead.

The application, to erect a 12 metre high mast with antennas on the top and housing for radio equipment on a grass verge on Blackbrook Avenue was refused in April last year by members of the council's development control committee.

They voted against the advice of council officers who recommended that the application be approved.

But Vodafone appealed against the decision and following a visit by a Government inspector, it was upheld.

The application was the fourth to be made and the decision is all the more devastating, as it became the mission of the late Albert Clemow, borough and parish councillor for the area, to see it defeated.

He fought against the application on behalf of residents, arguing that the erection of a previous mast had ruled out the need for another.

Nevertheless, the inspector upheld the appeal stating that the structure would be simple and uncluttered' and would not dominate the street scene and therefore the effect on the character and appearance of the area would not be serious''.

Liberal Democrat borough councillor for the area Colin Oliver said: "This is sad news. The residents are so disappointed.

"Ironically, the inspector made a good case for the mast to be refused in her report but allowed it anyway. Albert and myself really fought against this especially when an earlier mast was erected we were told that it would prevent the need for any others."

Villagers protest against plan to put up phone mast

By Pat Smith

Protesters at the site

VILLAGERS in Bishampton are angry over a plan to erect a mobile phone mast.

An open meeting in the village hall was planned for last night (Wednesday) to fight the application for Nightingale Farm, which villagers fear could put their health at risk.

Leading the protest is Tony Waghorn, who delivered information packs downloaded from the internet to every villager in Bishampton.

Mr Waghorn, who lives near the farm in Main Street, said: "Everybody is incensed. These systems are, to say the least, contentious and controversial.

"There has been no consultation between T-Mobile and villagers. Scientific research has shown that these masts should be 500 metres from homes and a lot of households come within that - it's appalling."

His neighbour, Jenny Perkins, said: "I am worried. My daughter Abigail has cystic fibrosis, which is a life limiting disease. She's only five and I think the mast could have an affect on her condition."

Farmer William Robertson, of Nightingale Farm, said he had been assured that there was absolutely no risk to health.

"There is no way I would put at risk my own family and animals if I thought there was a danger," he said.

"The mast has to go somewhere in the village because mobile phone users can't get a signal here."

John Shaughnessy, for T-Mobile, said: "We take advice of the World Health Organisation. Its latest fact sheet, published in May 2006, said that the low exposure levels and research results concluded that there was no scientific evidence that the weak radio frequency levels from base stations and wireless networks, caused adverse health effects."

He said the company did not need permission to erect the mast, to be attached to a barn, because it was under 15metres. He added: "We always choose the best place for reception and from a visual impact point of view. We can access highway land for nothing, or we can choose private land where we will pay the owner from a few thousand pounds a year upwards, depending on the installation."

At the meeting which was to take place last night, Mr Waghorn was calling for concerned residents to form a protest group to try to stop the plans.

National Roundup of Nonviolent Action

February 22, 2007

Nonviolent activists across the United States have entered offices of Senate and Congressional representatives to "assemble peaceably," seeking assurance that the elected officials will vote against President Bush's proposed $93 billion dollar supplemental spending bill that would fund ongoing war in Iraq.

In Fairbanks, Alaska, on February 20, 2007, nine people entered the office of Senator Ted Stevens to deliver "emphatic requests" to end the war and then began reading the names of Iraqis and Americans who were killed in Iraq. They separated the names of Americans by age. When ordered to leave, they were only half way through the commemoration of the twenty one year old U.S. troops who died in Iraq. Seth Warncke was issued a citation, while Rob Mulford and Don Muller were taken to the Fairbanks Correctional Unit where they spent the night in jail and were released after 23 hours in custody. They were charged with criminal trespass and ordered to appear in court on April 4, 2007.

On Feb 21, in Toledo, OH seventeen Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition Occupation Project participants entered Congresswoman Kaptur's office. Nine people refused to leave when the office closed. The group had visited Congresswoman Kaptur's office last week and urged her to sign a pledge to vote against further war funding, with the understanding that they would assemble peaceably in her office the following week. Two of Congresswoman Kaptur's staff persons left the office to change clothes and then returned to remain with the activists. The building closed at 11:00 p.m., but several of the activists plan continued commemorating U.S. service members and Iraqis who have died in Iraq, respectfully reciting the names. Four people were arrested: Jeff Klein, Steven Miller, Larry Coleman, and Trudy Bond.

A similar action is underway as of the evening of February 21, in Portland, ME, where seventeen people entered the office of Congressman Tom Allen. Sixteen people have remained in the office, and more are planning to arrive before the office closes at 11:00 p.m. They represent Peace Action Maine, Veterans for Peace and Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space. No arrests have been made at this time. The group is also continuing their commemoration of those Iraqis and members of the military who have lost their lives and are asking for a commitment from Tim Allen to vote against any additional war funding.

In Chicago, IL, on February 21st, at an ecumenical prayer service hosted by the American Friends Service Committee, the Eighth Day Center for Justice, and numerous other Chicago faith based peace groups, people gathered to pray for forgiveness, as a nation, for the times we had not spoken out against the war. Wanting to assure that the Senators of Illinois understood their remorse and knew that the participants decried the war and ongoing funding of the war, twenty-five participants walked to the offices of Senators Durbin and Obama to deliver a letter. Senator Obama's office staff told the assembled group that they wanted to receive their letter, but, unfortunately, the Federal Building was locked and the participants in the prayer service were not allowed to enter. When a high school student who had joined the prayer service placed a cell phone call to Senator Durbin's office, he was disappointed that the staff member hung up the phone after a very brief exchange. Eventually, three of Senator Durbin's staff members emerged from the Federal Building to receive the letter.

Yesterday, February 20th, in Chicago, IL four women were arrested as they knelt in the lobby of the Federal Building, chanting a litany in remembrance of Iraqis and Americans who have been killed in Iraq. Prior to their action, ten women met with Senator Durbin's chief of staff for the district and asked the Senator to exercise more leadership by rebutting claims that failure to approve the supplemental spending constitutes failure to support the U.S. troops. A spirited group of women gathered outside the building in support of the women who were arrested.

Please Don't Make My Grandchildren Pay for the War That Killed Their Father

"Your brave military is being used and depleted. Your national defense is being squandered. American Liberty at the Precipice

"In another low moment for American justice, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that detainees held at the prison camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, do not have the right to be heard in court. The ruling relied on a shameful law that President Bush stampeded through Congress last fall that gives dangerously short shrift to the Constitution. The right of prisoners to challenge their confinement - habeas corpus - is enshrined in the Constitution and is central to American liberty. Congress and the Supreme Court should act quickly and forcefully to undo the grievous damage that last fall's law, and this week's ruling, have done to this basic freedom." writes the New York Times.

Impeach07 Campaign Launched

http://tinyurl.com/3c6wlu

The impeachment movement is uniting and expanding. Democrats.com is joining with many other organizations to launch Impeach07, a coordinated series of nationwide actions aimed at impeaching Bush and Cheney through widespread public protest, creative dissent, media activism, education, and lobbying: http://www.impeach07.org

Bush and Cheney have misled this nation into an aggressive war, spied in open violation of the law, and sanctioned the use of torture - among numerous other offenses. Newsweek reported in October that a majority of Americans favor impeachment, and in January that 58% said they wished the Bush administration were over. "Only a great popular upheaval," historian Howard Zinn said recently, "can push both Republicans and Democrats into compliance with the national will."

We need to end the Iraq War and prevent an Iran War, and impeachment is the way we will do it.

On March 17, the anniversary of the start of the Iraq war (and the 40th anniversary of the famous 1967 March on the Pentagon), Impeach07 will mobilize for a March on the Pentagon to demand peace and impeachment: http://www.marchonpentagon.org

On March 18-20, Impeach07 will organize local events for peace and impeachment around the country: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/event

Impeach07 is also planning:

A "Make Hip Hop, Not War" bus tour promoting peace and impeachment on March 19 - April 21: http://www.hiphopcaucus.org

A boycott of major corporations that are profiting from the Bush administration's policies, making a killing off of killing, on April 15- 22: http://www.wearenotbuyingit.org

And a nationwide day of protest: Impeachment Day, April 28, 2007: http://www.a28.org

Initial participating organizations represent hundreds of thousands of antiwar, military family, peace, youth and women activists and lawyers. They include After Downing Street, Backbone Campaign, Center for Constitutional Rights, Citizens Impeachment Commission, CODE PINK Women for Peace, Constitution Summer, Consumers for Peace, Democrats.com, Democracy Rising, Gold Star Families for Peace, Green Party of the United States, Hip Hop Caucus, Impeach the President, ImpeachBush.org, Military Free Zone, National Lawyers Guild, Patriotic Response to Renegade Government, Progressive Democrats of America, Independent Progressive Politics Network, Velvet Revolution, and World Can't Wait: Drive Out the Bush Regime.

NM Leads State Race to Send Impeachment Resolution to Congress

House rules allow impeachment to begin with a Resolution from one state legislature. Three states have begun the process - NM, WA, and VT - and NM has an early lead...

1. New Mexico's resolution (SJR 5) cleared its first hurdle last Friday when it passed the Rules Committee on a unanimous 5-0 vote. Citizens turned out in force and gave powerful emotional appeals for impeachment. Incredibly, not a single Republican showed up to defend Bush! (Is that a signal that Republicans want to quietly help Democrats impeach Bush before the 2008 election to avoid a repeat of the 2006 GOP wipeout?) The NM bill must clear two more committees before it goes to the full Senate. Video and details here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/nm http://impeachbush.tv/impeach/state_nm.html

2. In Washington State, Senator Eric Oemig's Resolution (SJM 8016) will have its first hearing on March 1. Activists led by "state-at-home mom" Linda Boyd will hold a rally for impeachment and investigations in Olympia on the Capitol steps in at 1:00 p.m. Video and details here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/wa http://impeachbush.tv/impeach/state_wa.html

3. In Vermont, Rep. Daryl Pillsbury's resolution (JRH-15) has 22 co-sponsors, with 75 needed for passage. State legislators are getting heavy anti-impeachment pressure from Vermont's Members of Congress, so a strong grassroots movement is urgent. Cindy Sheehan and John Nichols will barnstorm VT for impeachment from March 2-4. Audio and details here: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/vt http://impeachbush.tv/impeach/state_vt.html

The main argument against state (and local) resolutions has been that states (and towns) should not get involved in national policy. Of course states have always been involved - state legislatures actually appointed U.S. Senators until 1913, and have always weighed in on national issues. Right now 20 legislatures are considering resolutions against Bush's escalation in Iraq. It's time for all state legislatures to call for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney!

Scooter Libby Lied to Cover Up Cheney's Crimes - Impeach Cheney First!

"There is a cloud over the Vice President," special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald told the jury in the Scooter Libby trial. Libby lied to Fitzgerald in 2003 to cover up Cheney's direct role in outing covert CIA operative Valerie Plame by having his staff leak her identity to reporters.

And why did Cheney "out" Plame at great damage to the CIA's war on terror? Because her husband Joe Wilson had exposed Bush's State of the Union Big Lie about Iraq trying to buy uranium from Niger - a lie that was thoroughly debunked by the CIA but included in the SOTU at the insistence of Dick Cheney's neocon agent on the National Security Council.

Based on the evidence revealed at the Libby trial, Emptywheel has written a detailed indictment of Cheney for his direct role in outing Valerie Plame: http://thenexthurrah.typepad.com/the_next_hurrah/2007/02/indicting_dick_.html

We certainly hope Fitzgerald will prosecute Cheney: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022107A.shtml

But even if he doesn't, Emptywheel provides more than enough evidence for Congress to begin Cheney's impeachment. Sign our petition to Impeach Cheney First: http://www.democrats.com/peoplesemailnetwork/73

* Senkung des Kraftstoffverbrauchs,

* Reduzierung des CO2-Ausstoßes,

* Verlagerung des Güterverkehrs von der Straße auf die Schiene,

* Besteuerung von Kerosin,

* Drastische Reduzierung von die Bodenversiegelungen,

* Aufforstung und Schutz der Biodiversität.

Warm-Weather Smog May Boost Stroke Risk

STEVEN REINBERG

c. 2007 HealthDay News
Distributed by The New York Times Syndicate

Inhaling fine-particle air pollution, at least during warm weather, may increase people's risk for stroke, Finnish researchers report. Earlier research had linked air pollution with heart attack, but this is the first study to look at ultra-fine-particle air pollution and stroke.

"We evaluated the effects of these and other particle sizes on stroke to help determine the most harmful particle sources in the air," study author Jaana Kettunen, a researcher for the National Public Health Institute in Kuopio, said in a prepared statement. The report is published in the March issue of Stroke.

Fine-particle pollution is made up of tiny particles of dust and soot, less than 2.5 microns, about 1/30th the width of a human hair. They mostly come from car exhaust, power plant emissions and burning of fossil fuels. Ultra-fine particles are less than 0.1 microns and are usually found in car exhaust.

In the study, Kettunen's team looked at air pollution data, as well as data on people aged 65 and older who died from stroke in Helsinki from
1998 to 2004. They analyzed both warm and cold months.

"We found that, during the warm season, there was a positive association between stroke mortality among the elderly and current-day level of fine particles," she said in a statement. "There was a 6.9 percent increase in stroke death for every 6 micrograms per cubic meter of air increase in fine particles. In addition, there was (a) 7.4 percent increase in stroke mortality for every 6 micrograms per cubic meter of air increase of previous-day, fine-particle levels."

This seemed to be a warm-weather phenomenon, however: There was no association in the cold season with stroke and fine particles, ultra-fine particles or carbon monoxide, the researchers reported.

Kettunen suggests that people might be more vulnerable to air pollution in warmer months, because they are outside and open their windows and doors more often than in cold months, and therefore their exposures to such pollution are higher. In addition, differences in the makeup of air pollution between seasons may play a role.

"We suggest that on high pollution days, elderly people should avoid spending unnecessary time in traffic, whether in a vehicle or walking, especially if they suffer from cardiovascular diseases, to lower their exposure to pollutants," Kettunen says. "They should also avoid heavy outdoor exercise on high air-pollution days. And nursing homes, for example, should not be built along heavily trafficked roads, where particle concentrations are at their highest."

One expert believes the association between stroke and pollution is possible, just as it is with heart attack.

"The link between pollution and heart attacks has been established a few years ago," says Dr. Gottfried Schlaug, an associate professor of neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. "Now, we see more reports coming out to suggest that there are links between pollution and stroke as well. Possible explanations are systemic inflammations, which could change blood clotting parameters or could lead to rupture of atherosclerotic plaques, as well as increases in plasma (blood) viscosity, which could increase the stroke risk."

Another expert thinks these findings need to be repeated in other studies before they are convincing. "The findings are intriguing, but the authors tested a number of associations," says Dr. S. Claiborne Johnston, director of the Stroke Service at University of California, San Francisco. "The association only with ultra-fine pollution and only in the warm season seems quite strange, and could be due to chance. These results really need to be repeated."

Ludicrous Dolphin Plan Shows We Are Scared Silly

Mast: 'This is worst place possible'

Smalley Place is the worst location in the town centre to install a mobile phone mast, according to Kenilworth Town Council.

But despite the opposition, telecommunications company Hutchinson 3G is appealing against a Warwick District Council refusal to build a 12-metre high mast on a grass verge outside the DeMontfort Hotel.

The company's original application was thrown out in January by planning committee councillors, who considered the plans to be "incompatible" with environmental improvements being made in that area of Kenilworth. The application, which includes a 12-metre high monopole mast, three antennas and equipment cabinets, will now be considered by the planning inspectorate.

Kenilworth Town Council is currently preparing its evidence to present to the appeal.

Coun George Illingworth (Abbey) said: "The town council has agreed it will oppose the appeal.

"We don't want to be against the company, we would like to work with them.

"We can think of several other possible locations in the town centre but to do that is not in the town council's remit.

"Of all the places to pick in the town centre it seems to be the worst. That end of town, by the clock tower, is an area we are trying to improve."

All comments submitted in connection with the original application will be forwarded to the planning inspectorate.

A spokeswoman from Hutchinson 3G said: "We have seen a rise in the number of people subscribing to 3 services in Kenilworth. As long as people require the services then 3 has a duty to meet these demands.

"To meet customer requirements, 3 does need a base station in the town centre. Technical constraints means base stations have to be located close to where people use their phones, which tends to be in town centres and residential areas. Without enough base stations in the right locations, mobile phones simply will not work.

"The base station will provide third generation (3G) services to the town centre, which enables quick and easy access to a range of multi-media data services via mobile handsets.

"Having spent four years searching the area for options and consulting with the local community, the streetworks proposal on Smalley Place is the only option left available.

"The proposed location was recommended for approval by the local planning authority and the its professional advisors advised that the proposal would have no impact on amenity.

"We have designed and located the proposed scheme for minimum visual impact to the area. The pole will be ultra slimline, seen in the context of existing tall lamppost, with the Hotel and an eight metre tall tree providing a backdrop.

"For these reasons, we believe an appeal on the planning committee's decision is wholly justified."

To withdraw or modify written comments already made write directly to Rob Nash, The Planning Inspectorate, Room 3/18b, Eagle Wing, Temple Quay House, 2, The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol. The deadline for comments is March 6.

Is anyone sick of this "duty" mantra the mobile companies use to justify treading all over our rights?

If I sold melons and people in town X said they wanted to buy melons, that does not mean I have a "duty" to provide melons, let alone the right to set up shop pretty much anywhere I choose in the face of local opposition. Why do mobile companies enjoy such rights? (no need to answer that by the way).

The Second Great Depression

December’s figures indicate that foreign investment is drying up and the world is no longer eager to purchase America’s lavish debt. The only thing the Federal Reserve can do is raise interest rates to attract foreign capital or let the dollar fall in value. The problem, of course, is that if the Fed raises rates, the real estate market will collapse even faster which will strangle consumer spending and shrivel GDP.

Phone mast plan for historic building

A MOBILE phone company wants to install a mast on a B-listed building in Kirkintilloch town centre.

O2 want to build four antennae and cabinets inside the clock tower at Barony Chambers in Kirkintilloch.

A spokesperson for the mobile phone company said: "The planning application is to put the mast behind the louvres on the clock tower, so there will be nothing visible to the naked eye.

"The mast is for our 3G network and it's going in there because we have identified a requirement for that service in the area.

"We recognise that putting structures on the street or green field sites can sometimes be off-putting for local communities therefore we try to find solutions to that where we can."

Barony Chambers, at Cowgate in Kirkintilloch, is a B-listed building and planning permission needs to be approved by Historic Scotland.

Leigh Johnston, Historic Scotland's senior inspector, said: "Historic Scotland has not received an application for a telephone mast to be incorporated into the steeple yet and would expect to be consulted should East Dunbartonshire Council be minded to grant permission.

"As a B-listed building it is important that any alterations are appropriate and do not unnecessarily diminish the historic character of the building."

Concern over church phone mast plans

nlnews @archant.co.uk
21 February 2007

TALKS are underway between mobile phone giant T Mobile and Muswell Hill Baptist Church for a mast in its spire just yards from two schools.

The possibility of a mast in the Dukes Avenue church so close to Muswell Hill Primary School and the Hornsey Trust's Conductive Education Centre for children with cerebral palsy has prompted concern.

There are already at least 17 mobile phone base stations within three-quarters of a mile of Muswell Hill Broadway including a Vodafone mast on nearby land at The Hill bar/nightclub.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I know that the local authority has said that children must not be within 200 yards of a phone mast.

"There are two opinions on this - one that it doesn't matter about mobile phone masts, the other is that we need to know where masts are going and adopt a 'play safe' attitude towards them."

Church minister Andrew Picton told the Journal a final decision would be made by congregation members.

He said: "I understand there's still a certain amount of controversy around the issue even after all these years.

"We need to make decisions as a community together and explore all the issues open and honestly. We will take any concerns seriously."

He would not say how much T Mobile was proposing to pay in rent.

A spokesman for T Mobile said: "It is at a very early stage yet. There is no agreement, no planning application, no design; it is just to see whether they are interested and whether we can fit the equipment in the area of the church.

"I think probably it will be another two months before anything happens."

Meanwhile, St Peter-le-Poer Church in Albion Avenue, Friern Barnet, has given the go ahead for its tower to be used for a Vodafone mast.

The next steps are an application to Barnet Council and for the chancellor of the diocese of London to give his blessing to the move.

EMFs and Office of the Auditor General of Canada

We need your help.

Those of you who are concerned about radio frequency radiation, low frequency electromagnetic fields, dirty electricity or ground current in Canada and the possible health consequences can contact Roger Hillier, who is the Petitions Manage for the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

He can be reached via email at: roger.hillier @oag-bvg.gc.ca
or by phone at: 1-888-761-5953 x 4664

I am sending this to people in Canada who have contacted me about cell phone towers, high voltage power lines, ground current, electro-sensitivity, compact fluorescent lights etc.. Apparently two petitions have been presented to the OAG (one is by Higgins and the other by Weatherall). However, I know there are a lot of you out there who have been frustrated with the answers you have received from Health Canada and other federal bodies.

Please email Roger and tell him about your concerns. It will make his job easier and it will help the two petitions currently on file.

Also, please let me know if you have/will contact him with perhaps a cc of your email correspondence. Please use "Concern about EMFs" in the subject heading.

The OAG is here to help us get Ministers in various Departments to respond to pressing concerns we all have about our health and environmental exposure to toxins (among other things). One email to Roger can make a difference. Share your story with him in a couple of paragraphs, ask specific Ministers to respond to your questions and lets see what happens.

Thanks for helping,
-magda

p.s. Please forward this email to those in Canada who have a story to share, a question to ask or are just concerned about this emerging public health issue.

Anti-Terror Case Data Flawed

Federal prosecutors counted immigration violations, marriage fraud and drug trafficking among anti-terror cases in the four years after 9/11 even though no evidence linked them to terror activity, a Justice Department audit said Tuesday. Overall, nearly all of the terrorism-related statistics on investigations, referrals and cases examined by department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine were either diminished or inflated.

Congressional battleground

The American Prospect
by Paul Starr

02/20/07

Can the public make its will felt through Congress and start the difficult process of bringing closure to the Iraq War? Although the voters spoke last November, the administration has seen no need to listen. But the prospect of another defeat in 2008 may motivate enough Republicans in Congress to break with the administration on the war — and by acting strategically the war’s opponents and the Democratic leadership can help make that happen. It is a frightening thought that however little confidence they enjoy, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney will be in the White House for nearly two more years...

Framing the Presidency

The Nation
by Aziz Huq

02/20/07

What kind of executive branch did America’s constitutional framers have in mind? It’s a question with which federal courts are now busy wrestling. And the quality of liberty American citizens enjoy very much depends on their answers. Today, President Bush’s lawyers claim unlimited power to seize, indefinitely and without charges, individuals the Administration deems ‘enemy combatants.’ In two separate appellate court cases — one of which, Omar v. Harvey was argued earlier this month, the President’s lawyers made the following, remarkable claim: When international entanglements are involved, signified in the Omar case by a United Nationals Security Council resolution, US officials can detain a US citizen, indefinitely. Last week, the DC Court of Appeals rightly — and squarely — rejected this legally specious claim...

Appealing dissent

The American Conservative
by Michael Brendan Dougherty

02/12/07

Even out of uniform, Sgt. Liam Madden looks every bit the dutiful jarhead. His dark hair is cut short, his posture stiff and composed, his square jaw barely moves when he speaks. Even in the blistering cold, while reporters look for shelter from the wind, Sgt. Madden’s arms stay at his sides. Dozens of microphones form a media bouquet on the podium, leaving no place for him to rest his notes before he speaks. Facing the television cameras that frame his stern face against the Capitol dome, Madden’s bearing says that he is on a mission. In his hands he holds a message for Congress. The communication reads As a patriotic American proud to serve the nation in uniform, I respectfully urge my political leaders in Congress to support the prompt withdrawal of all American military forces and bases from Iraq. Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home. Simple, devoid of radicalism, and most important to Madden, legal. This Appeal for Redress to End the War in Iraq has been signed by over 1,100 members of the Armed Forces, including 100 officers. Delivering it to Congress after the Martin Luther King holiday, Sergeant Madden isn’t nervous. But he never expected to be doing this...

The Cheney handicap

National Review
by Bruce Bartlett

02/20/07

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Republican party has a huge problem going into 2008. Usually, it has a clear frontrunner going into the process who is broadly acceptable to most Republicans. But in this election cycle, that is not true. The race is wide open and it is hard to predict who will be left standing when the last primary vote is cast. One thing that can be predicted is that a great many Republicans will be dissatisfied with their party’s presidential nominee. It won’t matter who among those currently running ends up with the nomination, because, in my opinion, none have the capacity to unite the party or to stimulate the kind of intense support a nominee needs to win the general election. … One thing that could have changed things for the better, from the Republican point of view, is if it had a sitting vice president who was a candidate...

We’ve got issues

Liberty For All
by Lady Liberty

02/20/0

I’ve said and written any number critical things about President George W. Bush, but I’ve never called him stupid. That diminishes, in my mind, the intent behind some of his more objectionable acts, and these are things I do believe were committed with knowledge and intent. I believe he knew full well, and understood completely, the repercussions of the USA PATRIOT Act which goes well above and beyond extraordinary measures to fight the ‘war on terror.’ I think he endorses REAL ID because it gives the government more control over all of us rather than that it might give the government some dubious control over a few terrorists...

Scooter Libby and WWIII

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

02/21/07

Given that U.S. foreign policy is, to a large degree, driven by domestic politics, the motive on the part of the administration to escalate provocative covert actions inside Iran has never been greater. With Scooter Libby likely to be convicted and Fitzgerald’s sights increasingly turned on Cheney, the War Party, cornered, has every reason to lash out in one last desperate bid to save its political skin. Fitzgerald, by all indications, is coming for Cheney. After the trial but before the sentencing, Fitz will make a strenuous effort to ‘flip’ Scooter and use his testimony to target the vice president. … What better way to distract attention away from this coming political bombshell than by dropping some real bombs on Iran?

The mythology of the “Good Guy” American

The Power of Narrative
by Arthur Silber

02/20/07

One point is crucial: a critical part of our national mythology is the insistence on viewing our nation and ourselves as Americans in comparative terms. When we insist that we are uniquely ‘good’ and ‘virtuous,’ this logically necessitates a further conclusion: we are better than everyone else. We are ‘the Good Guys.’ The emphasis is not only on ‘Good,’ but on ‘the’: we are the Good Guys in a way that no one else is, or can ever be...

MPs attack plan for police access to ID database

Independent [UK]

02/21/07

The Government’s plan to bring in identity cards has run into further problems after it emerged that the police would be able to use the national database to check fingerprints found at crime scenes. Tony Blair was accused of contradicting previous assurances that the police would not be able to go on ‘fishing expeditions’ when the scheme takes effect. He said ID cards would help to solve crimes, in an attempt to reassure 28,000 people who signed a petition against the cards on the Downing Street website. In an email to the signatories, the Prime Minister argued that the scheme would help the police bring people guilty of serious crimes to justice. ‘They will be able, for example, to compare the fingerprints found at the scene of some 900,000 unsolved crimes against the information held on the register,’ he said. Opposition parties claimed Mr Blair was ‘changing his tune’ and that they never realised the police would be able to use the database in such a way...

Stronger Unions Mean a Strong Middle Class

Harley Shaiken writes: "Polls tell us that 58 percent of eligible workers would join a union if they could, yet union membership in the private sector plummeted to a record low in 2006. What explains this yawning gap? The fact that, for many Americans, joining a union has become a risk rather than a right."

Small US Towns Bear Scars From Iraq

Across the nation, small towns are quietly bearing a disproportionate burden of war. Nearly half of the more than 3,100 US military casualties in Iraq have come from towns like McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where fewer than 25,000 people live. One in five hailed from hometowns of fewer than 5,000. Many of the hometowns of the war dead aren't just small, they're poor.

Zeit statt Konsum - Arbeitsverweigerung

Was bringt das?

It speaks volumes that in order for young working-class men and women to gain self-confidence or self-worth, they seek to join an institution that trains them how to destroy, maim, and kill. The desire to become a Marine-as a journey to one's manhood or as a path to self-improvement-is a stinging indictment of the pathology of our class-ridden world.

Eisenhower's Worst Nightmare Now Harsh Reality For USA

By John Hanchette

Consider this mind-twisting equation from a well-researched article in the current issue of "Vanity Fair" magazine: Private federal contractors now "absorb the taxes paid by everyone in America with incomes under $100,000."

In Iraq, Anyone Can Make a Bomb

By Andrew Cockburn

In November, U.S. troops raiding a Baghdad machine shop came across a pile of copper disks, 5 inches in diameter, stamped out as part of what was clearly an ongoing order. This ominous discovery, unreported until now, makes it clear that Iraqi insurgents have no need to rely on Iran as the source of EFPs.

Another Big Win for Big Business: Court Sets Aside Award in Philip Morris Case

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines07/0220-07.htm

--------

Shielding the Powerful

The editors of the New York Times write: "The Supreme Court's decision yesterday, overturning a nearly $80 million punitive damage award against Philip Morris, is a win for corporate wrongdoers. It stretches the Constitution's guarantee of due process in a way that will make it easier for companies that act reprehensibly to sidestep serious punishments. It also provides unsettling new evidence that the court is more concerned about - and more willing to protect - the powerful than the powerless."

Javier Solana and the Global Constitution

by Constance Cumbey

The German ambassador to the USA once worked for Javier Solana, or so he said in his own speech at the February 14th function. So did his boss, German Foreign Minister Walter Steinmeier. Javier Solana is “the invisible man” to far too many Americans.” He certainly was not presumed “invisible” to the journalists at this gathering. “As you all know, Javier Solana is the face and voice of Europe,” proclaimed the Germanic ambassador making preliminary remarks before Senor Solana’s keynote speech.....

Desperation in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation

by Melanie McBee

Alcoholism, addiction, violence, and suicide predominate in this once tranquil place. Although my family educated me on the statistics, I was hardly prepared when in 1997-98, I went to live there. I was mortified by the alcoholism. These people...MY PEOPLE were committing a slow suicide by the huge amounts of alcohol they were consuming. This was no longer just another statistic to me; it became my reality, the place I woke up to every day......

Drug Safety: The Eleventh Hour is NOW!
