US Military Tells "24": Cut Out Torture Scenes ... or Else!

The hugely popular television series "24" draws millions of viewers but it appears some people are becoming a little squeamish. The US military has appealed to the producers of "24" to tone down the torture scenes because of the impact they are having both on troops in the field and America's reputation abroad. Forget about Abu Ghraib, forget about Guantanamo Bay, forget even that the White House has authorized interrogation techniques that some classify as torture. It is 24 that is giving us a bad name.

The Undertaker's Tally

Roger Morris writes: "On a farewell flight to Baghdad in early December 2006, the departing Secretary of Defense reminisced about his start in politics more than forty years before. Aides leaned in to listen intently, but came away with no memorable revelations. It hardly mattered. As usual with this man who dominated government as no cabinet officer before him, including the power-ravenous Henry Kissinger, whom he so despised and outdid in effect, if not celebrity - authentic history and Don Rumsfeld's version of it bore little resemblance."

Sled Dogs of Greenland

Dear Sir/Madam: On February a proposal was sent to all who are receiving this e-mail, and as yet not one person has had the courtesy to contact me with regard to the horrific treatment the Greenland Sled Dogs must endure every day of their short lives. It would appear that there is no concern about the bad name your countries are subjected to; it is also apparent that we must begin our boycott of all things that originate in Denmark and Greenland...It is most discouraging that this is the action that must be taken to bring you out of your catatonic state.

With regret, I am,
Earle Bingley,
President, Canadian Voice For Animals.
Canada

It is apparent that the Greenland and Denmark governments are not responding to the needs of the Sled Dogs...I am now asking everyone on to send more mail to the Prime Minister of Greenland at: Paornánguaq Kleist PAKL@gh.gl with a cc to: Siverth K. Heilmann at: SKHE@gh.gl and a cc to: jm@jm.dk If you would also be so kind as to send a cc to me also at: eheb@telus.net We must not let them think that we the public have lost interest. Please forward this to all with whom you are acquainted.

Kindest Regards, Earle

Dear Friends of Greenland Sled Dogs: I was informed yesterday of a second petition that has been set up for the Sled Dogs. Please go to this address: http://www.opprop.no/opprop.php?id=sledehunder and please sign it also. I'm sure the Greenland and Denmark governments are watching the petitions with a careful eye.

Bless all of you for your continued support,
Kindest regards, Earle

P.S. If you are able to add banners to your mail, please save the Greenland banner and add it to your mail and if you can, insert a link to: http://www.canadianvoiceforanimals.org/GreenlandSledDogs.html or to any other foundation that is supporting the dogs. Many thanks.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Dear Prime Minister Hans Enoksen: Dear Minister of Justice Siverth K. Heilmann

The following proposal is one that we at the Canadian Voice For Animals - Canada and Argentina believe will be an equitable solution for both the Greenland government and the citizens of the world who are up in arms about the horrible way the Greenland dogs are maltreated.

FIRST:
(1) All animal welfare laws on the government's charter must be immediately enforced. A press release should be issued forthwith advising the public that you are working with us to solve the Sled Dog problem
(2) Anyone found breaking said laws would be subject to a mandatory jail term, and/or a substantial fine and three months of community service in animal welfare.
(3) Two new laws must be added to the current Animal Welfare section. (1) No sled dogs are to be tethered with chains as this causes them great pain and in some cases strangulation. Any kind of tethering should be completely banned. (2) All working dogs must be given a nourishing meal at approximately the same time every day. (3) Whipping dogs in order to control them is an abomination; whips should also be banned. (4) All working dogs must have friendly interaction with their owners daily. SECOND:
(1) Enforcing the existing laws will probably be a problem do to the large expanse of your country. We suggest that you employ at least 10 to 20 new Law Enforcing personnel. This can be worked into your new budget. Fines garnered from law breaking perpetrators will in all likelihood pay their salaries.
(2) These new Law Enforcing Officers should be men or women who have a working understanding of the welfare of animals. Under no circumstance should they be owners of working sled dogs. All should undergo a complete background check by the local police department.
(3) All new Law Enforcing Officers should be put through a two to three week training course on how to deal with these unfortunate and abused animals.

THIRD:
(1) The government must begin to work with animal welfare organizations in your area. We particularly are in favour of Dryenes Venner. Their website address is: www.dyrenesvenner.gl They have endorsed our campaign and have concerns about about the welfare of the sled dogs. A grant could be given to them each month for the expenses of the animals in their care. This should be given your immediate consideration.
(2) If sled dogs are still being sent to the island that has been named: The Sled Dog Death Island, shelters must be provided for protection from the cold and a safe area where females can give birth. Straw bedding should be provided. There are many organizations that build pre-fabricated buildings and they would probably be willing to donate said shelters, if only for the good publicity.
(3) Veterinary care should be available at all times. This could also be worked into the governments fiscal budget. Not only would this be beneficial to the Sled Dogs, it would also be great publicity for your country. We firmly believe that this proposal is one that is completely doable. We are willing to work with you hand in hand to help you show the world that your country is one that will be an inspiration to other nations who have similar problems.

We do have a representative in your country whom I'm sure will be more than willing to help you in any way possible. We will send you the information on receipt of your request.

I am respectfully yours,
Earle Bingley, President, Canadian Voice For Animals

Re: Greenland Sled Dogs

Paomanguaq Kleist,
Section of Information,
P.O. Box 1015, 3900 Nuuk

Dear Sir:

With regard to your letter dated February 21st, my interest in the Greenland Sled Dogs is relatively new; however, it appears that the CVFA’s campaign to stop the inhumane cruelty the dogs have had to endure for decades. Regrettably, it will, in all likelihood, continue. To quote one of our supporters: “Thank you Mr. Bingley; you have awakened the world to an unspeakable horror and I can assure you we will never give up our support for those poor unfortunate dogs. How can a country be so collectively cruel?” How Mr. Kleist; how can a country be so cruel…collectively?

You state that the Animal Protection Act was entered into force in 2003; it is now 2007 and finally the cover-up has been exposed. It is time to actually govern, and time to stop announcing fabricated falsehoods.

With regard to chained animals: It is a well-known fact that any animal which has been captive of chain-leash will eventually become aggressive…The deaths of the children could have been avoided if only the owners of the dogs had the sense to socialize the dogs that attacked the innocent children. Their deaths are the burden of your shoulders. Your government’s law chain law has absolutely no merit.

To say that sled dogs are polar animals is just more of the usual governmental psycho-babble. I personally have a Siberian husky and although she loves being out in the snow, she is always happy to come in out of the cold. No one is going to believe such a misguided statement.

You also state in your letter that measures have been taken to solve the island problem. What measures? It is quite easy to issue such a statement; however, the public from around the world wants to see those measures in a written format.

I sincerely hope that you will work closely with Susanne Markdal and Dryenes Venner, to bring this horror to an equitable solution both for the dogs and the watchful eye of the world’s citizens.

I am respectfully yours,
Earl H. E. Bingley,
President,
Canadian Voice for Animals

GREENLAND, DENMARK: March 21st, 2007

On February 8th, 2007 the Canadian Voice for Animals – Canada and Argentina launched a campaign to save the Sled Dogs of Greenland. The dogs are an integral part of the Greenlander’s lives for a few short months of each year. It is estimated that several thousand dogs are sent to an island off the coast of Greenland when they are no longer needed. Over half of the dogs die of starvation and those that do survive, do so by eating their dead mates. See the link below for up-to-date information:

Re: Greenland Sled Dogs

Dear Mr. Premier Henoksen: Attached you will find a letter that has been sent to all of the Greenland activists, plus the media in several countries.

Earle Bingley. President, Canadian Voice for Animals.

March 23, 2007

Dear Mr. Premier Henoksen: On March 21st, I received word from Sanne Rosbog, a journalist with Ekstrabladet. dk, informing me that the Greenland government will be setting up several teams to study the Sled Dog problem with a goal to find a solution to the horror that the dogs have had to endure for so many years by their owners. There is absolutely no excuse for such behaviour; all animals are sentient beings and deserve our respect and proper care for their contribution to your country's economy. Regrettably, I have been very much tied up with the annual Canadian seal hunt, which is a terrible blight on my country's reputation, and I am only now able to contact you and Mr. Kleist. My colleagues, Professor Myrta Montiel, Ms. Jenny Berg-Rolness, and I are more than pleased that your government has seen the error of its ways, and that you are taking steps to right a terrible wrong. We would be happy to work with you on finding a solution; however, we will require a brief summary of your plans, plus weekly or monthly updates on your country's progress. I assure you Mr. Premier, that we will not stop this campaign unless we have some positive reports from you or from your associates. I look forward to hearing from you, and I remain, Respectfully yours,

Earle Bingley

Re: Greenland Sled Dogs

http://www.canadianvoiceforanimals.org/GreenlandSledDogs.html

Dear Friends of Greenland Dogs: We now have a new letter on this page: http://www.canadianvoiceforanimals.org/GreenlandSledDogs1.html Please use it as a guide and compose your own letter. I ask this, because anyone getting the same letter over and over will not take notice of it, as it is simply deleted and forgotten. If you click on the link on the top of this e-mail you will see that the P.M. has set up a group to look into how they end the abuse that the sled dogs suffer each and every day of their lives. This is a step in the right direction and we should let them know that we will support them if they follow through with their proposed plan. There is a lot of reading on the sled dog pages, but one thing you should be aware of is that some of the sled dogs only live to be 3 to 4 years old. Some of the owners of these dogs will just kill them if they refuse to pull the heavy loads they were able to pull when they were young and hopefully well fed. I hope this fact is an incentive for everyone to take a few moments and send out their own personal letter. Please remember that these dear souls are counting on us to help them have a better life.

Kindest regards,
Earle

Norwegian TV

Today the following arrived in my mail. It is from a lady in Norway: It's quite disgusting to know that the horror is still happening to the Sled Dogs. After you read the following, each an every one of you should write letters demanding that something be done. Contact every animal welfare site you know of in the Swedish, Danish, and Greenland areas and ask them what they are doing to stop this carnage. I have written to them and all they are willing to do is post a link to the petition. I am now trying to contact the Norwegian TV station that shot the mentioned programme about the dogs to see if they will join us in this fight to help these poor unfortunate animals. To tell you the truth I'm sick to the stomach.

Read on; it's quite horriffic.

Today Norwegian tv showed a travel programme from Greenland. It was horrible, horrible. We saw a dead and frozen dog being loosened from the chain he had lived his miserable life in, and thrown in a ditch. We saw sled dogs being kicked and beaten to make them rise up and pull the sled. They were so confused by the maltreatment, and so frightened of their owners. There was an expression of utterly sadness and resignation in their faces. We saw a dog left to die in the track, with a deep wound in his leg. He turned his head away and closed his eyes when the camera people approached him, he obviously didn’t expect anything good to come from the hands of men. The team left him in the track, and when they later asked the owner what he intended to do with him, they were told that there were wolves in the area, so the dog would probably be killed and eaten the following night.

This is a daily happening in your country. Thousands of dogs have a hell-like existence just now, chained to the ground in extreme temperatures, many of them with no shelter at all. The only time they are released from the chain is when they are pulling a sled, and then they are kicked and whipped and treated as worthless creatures, and if wounded they risk to be left behind to die a slow death from starvation and freezing, if they are not torn apart by wolves.

I must admit that after seeing this programme, which confirmed everything we have read about the sled dogs situation, I feel that Greenland is among the worst countries on this planet. You should be very much concerned about this, not only because if affects the country’s and the people’s reputation, but in the first place because it involves unspeakable suffering for thousands of innocent and defenseless dogs every day. I will never forget the dogs we met in this programme. Some of them are probably dead by now, but still I feel that these are the most lucky ones, because the life these dogs have to endure is no life at all.

The letter from the home rule is a fine speech about condemning neglect of sled dogs. But talking doesn’t stop people from starving and brutally maltreating their dogs. Action is needed now. The dogs are waiting for someone to end their misery, and the international society is closely watching and waiting for improvements. Dogs have suffered on Greenland for decades. It is time to end this tragedy now.

Now I ask you to get those letter off to the addresses you will find on the Sled Dog page.

See: http://www.canadianvoiceforanimals.org/GreenlandSledDogs.html

Regards,
Earle

US Energy Secretary Opposes Caps, Profits From Emissions

Two weeks ago, a devastating report by the world's leading climate scientists warned that global warming is no longer a threat, but is a man-made disaster that has already impacted the environment. Yet, hours after the report was released, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said the Bush administration would continue to oppose mandatory reductions in greenhouse gases in the form of CO2 caps.

We don't want masts near our homes

KATIE COOPER
14 February 2007 11:34

The public has given a huge thumbs down to phone companies after an investigation around the Thorpe St Andrew area showed families were against masts being set up.

Out of the 116 people polled by campaigners, only one person wanted more masts for better phone network coverage and 10pc of people wanted all the existing ones torn down.

Anti-phone mast campaigners, led by Andy Street, targeted an area of Thorpe St Andrew which has already been earmarked for a phone mast and asked families their opinions.

Mr Street said: "We hope the survey will give both councils some help in making their decisions. About 10pc of the people we talked to wanted the masts removed completely."

The site, on the verge of Dussindale Drive, Thorpe St Andrew, was earmarked for a mast last year but the original application was refused by Broadland District Council.

But mobile phone company O2, which had proposed the 12.5m mast, launched an appeal and overturned the original ruling.

Angry campaigners launched the survey while two similar plans are in the pipeline for the area - T Mobile wants to install a 12m mast and associated equipment and cabinets at the junction of Ring Road and Pound Lane and Vodafone has just finished a pre-application consultation on plans to put six dishes on the existing St William's Way mast.

The survey showed that 85pc of residents wanted no more masts.

The group presented its findings to Thorpe St Andrew Town Council's planning sub-committee on Monday and hopes to widen its net to take in more streets in the area.

The group also plans to submit more of its findings to the Broadland planning committee on Thursday 15 February, where they will be considering applications for more phone masts in the area.

A spokesman for Broadland District Council said: "We are aware of residents' concerns and take into consideration representations from members of the public.

"But this information would not be accepted in a planning meeting and we would say to members of the public who want to make this sort of objection, to visit our chief executive.

"All applications for phone masts are considered on their own merit and existing masts in the area would have little bearing on this."

The Evening News thrust the issue of mobile phone masts firmly into the public spotlight with its Put Masts on Hold campaign.

Put Our Masts on Hold opposes installing mobile phone masts near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe.

PARENTS' ANGER AT PHONE MAST PLANS

RESIDENTS are furious at proposals for a mobile phone mast near a children's day nursery.

Telephone company Hutchinson 3G UK Ltd have applied to Doncaster Council to erect a 60ft pole on the Paragon Autocare Breakdown site, Great North Road, Skellow, but locals plan to fight the move.

Robert Forsythe lives in Crabgate Drive and claims the mast would be only 80 feet away from his property. He said: "Not only would this be an eyesore but also we as a neighbourhood are concerned about the health implications due to the radio waves given off."

Mr Forsythe and other residents intend to write to the council and start a petition against the proposed mast which would be close to the Elmcrest Day Nursery on Crabgate Lane.

He added: "Our number one concern is health and I've done quite a lot of research and there is proof that masts do cause health problems. There is a committee in Sutton Coldfield which says eight out of ten people living close to masts have become ill."

Stephanie Darbyshire, Elmcrest's owner and manager, said the nursery was informed by 3G of the proposal and they have subsequently been in touch with the council. She said: "The original letter from 3G stated that the emissions were below the levels for concern. However, we are still concerned about the installation of such a mast so close to the nursery and housing estates. We would oppose any such installation so nearby and insist it is erected elsewhere."

Last year the council's planning committee approved 3G's move to build a mast on the Denaby and Cadeby Miners' Welfare sports ground, a site near two schools and a youth centre.

Peter Dale, Doncaster Council's Strategic Director of Development, said that public consultation would run until March 2.

3G spokesman Brian Spooner said: "We looked at a number of sites before it went into council and each was rejected for a number of reasons. Each site would have been discounted for a reason, whether it was poor radio coverage, visual impact or site unsuitability.

"This is the site we determined after the search was complete. In terms of health and safety concerns, the proposed station will have a ICNIRP certificate and there is no convincing scientific evidence that the very weak signals from base stations have adverse health effects."

REAL MIDDLE EAST PEACE TALKS NOW: Stop the Clash of Civilizations

http://www.avaaz.org/en/real_middle_east_talks/av.php

Angry and excited! Over 80,000 people signed Avaaz's campaign for Real Middle East Peace Talks, and the diplomatic buzz is growing. We put up billboards in Jerusalem created by members there, and they got national media coverage – then a couple of extremists vandalised the billboards.

This is good news -- it shows we're making a real impact. Let's put the billboards back up with even more signatures, and put them in Tel Aviv as well as Jerusalem! Can you help grow the campaign to more than 100,000 voices for peace before Friday? Click here to sign the petition:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/real_middle_east_talks

That'll show the vandals: every time they deface our message we'll put it back up with more support. Most Israelis and Palestinians say they want proper negotiations: we refuse to be silenced by a small minority.

At this moment of upheaval in Middle East politics, these mock travel adverts are challenging and disarming the Israeli public -- here's some of what the Jerusalem Post said:

While enticing Israelis to travel by featuring attractive women and scenery are nothing new, these billboards were created to stop Israelis in their tracks. These ads feature "enemy states" such as Saudi Arabia and Syria in a whole new way, with only the fine print noting that the price is for one room and a double bed - dependent on the Saudi peace plan.

"Israelis visiting Damascus, Dubai, even Jericho is inconceivable today – unless they're in uniform," said Hilder. "We wanted to help Israelis look and think again about the Arab Peace Initiative."

We've had a great response to the ads, though Israel's politicians are still dancing around the idea of real peace talks based on 1967 borders. So don't let the extremists silence us – join the campaign, get us to 100,000 and we'll put up more billboards!

http://www.avaaz.org/en/real_middle_east_talks

With hope,

Paul, Galit, Ricken, Ben, Graziela, Iain and all at Avaaz

Peter Schneider

Five Ousted US Attorneys Received Positive Job Evaluations

Although the Bush administration has said that six US attorneys were fired recently in part because of 'performance related' issues, at least five of them received positive job evaluations before they were ordered to step down. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, using authority he gained in March from a little-noticed provision of the Patriot Act, has appointed interim US attorneys from the Bush administration's inner circle. The firings and appointments have raised concerns that Gonzales is politicizing the process.

PROTESTERS STOP MAST AGAIN

DEFIANT protesters have forced developers to abandon work on a controversial phone mast for a second time.

Contractors from mobile phone company O2 arrived at a site in Asfordby Road, Melton, near the entrance to the Town Estate's sports ground, on Monday morning to erect the mast.

But they didn't get very far as protesters had parked a van and cars on the land to stop any work, vowing to guard the site on a 24-hour rota basis.

About 15 local residents with protest banners were at the site on Monday to lend their support.

Protester Paul Shaw (36), of Asfordby Road, slept in the van overnight on Sunday and Monday to keep guard.

He said: "We had a good idea they were coming on Monday.

We're working on a rota basis, staying on site for a couple of hours then swapping over. We have walkie talkies so if anyone turns up we can start ringing around.

"This is about the future health of our children. There's growing evidence that arguments about health effects are becoming more persuasive.

"In other countries like Sweden they are taking a more precautionary approach about siting masts near schools and residential areas.

"They have a stipulation that masts can't be within 500 metres of any residential properties. Our Government has just chosen not to follow that line."

Residents of Asfordby Road, Sysonby Grange Lane and Chetwynd Drive got together in August last year after Melton Council's development committee approved the mast.

And in October they staged a similar sit in which stopped work progressing.

02 agreed to look at alternative sites following the fierce protests but claims there are none that would work.

Mr Shaw, who has two children, Caitlin (3) and Louie (1), added: "They always opt for highways land because they get it rent free. It's the cheapest option."

02 spokesman Angela Johnson confirmed contractors had had to leave the site.

She said: "We're very disappointed because it's a considerable investment in Melton to ensure residents have a good phone service.

"We would hope the residents would be reasonable and move their vehicles away to allow us to build.

"We now have an option to take out a court order but no decision has been made yet."

She added: "We've spoken to representatives from the local community and tried to find an alternative sites but unfortunately there's nothing that will work for us in the area other than that site.

"We're happy to meet residents and talk through their concerns but we can't move that site. If residents would like a meeting I would be happy to pay for the hire of a room."

But concerned mum Elanor Shaw said: "We're very sceptical about them calling meetings. We know it's a public relations exercise to make them look like the good guys.

"We're on high alert and quite aware they're likely to try again but we've got a rota system in place so someone is there all the time."

More Troops, And More Violence

U.S. troops presence has averaged 142,000 soldiers a month since the occupation began nearly four years ago. Through this period, violence has increased against both them and the Iraqi civilian population. Despite promises of freedom, democracy and liberation, Iraqis have suffered severe deterioration in security, services, infrastructure and social unity since the U.S.-led occupation began. Many Iraqis believe that an increased number of troops will actually make the situation worse.

Eight reasons to close Guantanamo now

In These Times
by Karen J. Greenburg

02/12/07

The first detainees arrived in Guantanamo four months to the day after the 9/11 attacks. From the opening of Camp X-Ray — the first site of imprisonment, notorious for its tin-roofed open-air cages — to the recently completed permanent prison known as Camp 6, critics have called for its closure. Even President Bush has said, ‘I’d like to end Guantanamo. I’d like it to be over with.’ Yet he refuses to close it because, he says, it holds detainees who ‘will murder somebody if they are let out on the street.’ It’s time to look at the powerful reasons to close Guantanamo, both the standard ones enumerated below — and also what may be the most compelling, if unspoken, one of all: Guantanamo must be closed because the United States needs to indicate that it has decided to change course...

Mobilfunk: Krankheit oder Segen für die Bevölkerung?

HLV INFO 14/AT

Die Radeberger Heimatzeitung 9-02-07

Mobilfunk - Krankheit oder Segen für die Bevölkerung

Teil 1:

HLV INFO 14/AT

Demos planned over mast

Residents living next to a site earmarked for a controversial mobile phone mast in Shrewsbury today said they would demonstrate against 02’s planning appeal victory to install it near houses.

The telecommunications firm has been granted planning permission for the 41ft mast on land next to the junction of Copthorne Park and Copthorne Road.

O2’s original application was turned down by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council last June but the firm got that decision overturned following an appeal to planning inspectors.

Education and health programs were top targets for termination or steep cuts in President Bush's fiscal 2008 budget, according to details unveiled this week. Of 141 discretionary programs Bush recommended ending or scaling back significantly to save about $12 billion, 46 are run by the Education Department and 19 by the Health and Human Services Department.

Bush's Budget Alarms Safety Advocates

Buried inside President Bush's 2008 budget resolution released last week is a provision that would shift control over how anti-violence programs are funded from the legislative to the executive branch. The provision would give the Department of Justice, rather than Congress, discretion over how to spend federal dollars earmarked to combat domestic violence and sexual assault.

Ten Ways to Prepare for a Post-Oil Society

"Out in the public arena, people frequently twang on me for being 'Mister Gloom'n'doom,'" says James Howard Kunstler, "or for 'not offering any solutions' to our looming energy crisis. So, for those of you who are tired of wringing your hands, who would like to do something useful, or focus your attention in a purposeful way, here are my suggestions."

The Peak Oil Crisis: Connecting the Dots

Tom Whipple writes: "In the months after 9/11, there was much discussion about the American government's failure to 'connect the dots.' Hints and clues that al-Qaeda was about to launch airborne suicide attacks inside the US abounded, but nobody put the bits and pieces together into a convincing warning. Such it may be with peak oil."

Colonel Ann Wright (Retired): Watada Follows Military Rules on Dissent

"Courage is not only shown on the battlefield by military personnel," says Ann Wright. "It takes guts and courage for a soldier to refuse to deploy to Iraq with one's unit because he believes the war is illegal. Very few in our country resign from their careers, much less risk imprisonment, on a point of principle and conscience. First Lieutenant Ehren Watada is the latest in a series of war resisters who have faced jail rather than compromise their conscience."

As I write, indications are that there are US Special Forces engaged in operations in Iran. Rumors name the province of Khuzestan as the locale for these operations. Take Action Today: Global Protest - China's Brutal Fur Trade

****Cross Post Widely****

An open letter to animal advocates & activists
(especially those in New York City & surrounding areas)

Friends/Fellow Activists,

On February 13, 2007, New York City will join other cities around the world in a coordinated day of action and opposition to the cruel and inhumane Chinese fur trade. The purpose in forming the International Anti-Fur Coalition was to find a way to amplify our voices and to give added power and urgency to our message, by having simultaneous protests take place around the world and focused on one issue.

Earlier today, you may have seen the incredible news about the action that took place in China. For those of you who have not seen the newspaper article about the rescue of 400 cats from certain death and use for their flesh and their fur, here is a link to the article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,,2011569,00.html

The picture above is of some of the rescued cats and is a cogent reminder of why we do what we do.

In China, organized protests are forbidden. There is no pretense at freedom of speech and there is very little government sensitivity to the concept of animal rights and the people who believe in and fight for those rights. Yet, 100 people took a stand today. One of them ended up in the hospital after a confrontation with the police. The result? ....some 400 cats were saved from a brutal and senseless ending. Direct action in its purest form.

While this drama was unfolding in China, the valiant and courageous crew of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society faced off against the Japanese whaling fleet to defend a pod of whales. As I read the journal of one of the crew members, it was clear that they are making great sacrifices to stand between the whales and those that would spill their blood. They are prepared to put their lives on the line to save a whale.

In New York City, there are predictions of bitterly cold weather on Tuesday and there is the potential for snow. Not the ideal conditions for a protest on 12th Avenue just off the river. The wind is going to be frigid. I wish all demos could be held in 85 degree weather in full sunshine. Then again, I wish there wasn't a need to do the demos at all.

Let us take inspiration from those 100 activists that stood up to the police and the Sea Shepherds who are defending the whales at great personal risk in the most challenging conditions.

Bundle up, dress in layers, dot forget hats, gloves and scarves and warm footwear. If you dress appropriately there is no reason that the weather should keep you from speaking out for the animals. If you need any more inspiration, click on the link above or look at the picture and take a look at the rescued cats. Look at them as individuals. I am sure you will see one that reminds you of a cat you know. Take heart from those that were rescued. Don't forget about all those that are left behind. If you live in the area, please do whatever you can to join the protest. If you cannot attend, make a pledge to contact those listed below to voice your concern and your protest. Green MEP Jean Lambert Calls On EU To Replace Animal Experiments

This might be good to air. All of us should contact our MEPs to stop this vile abuse of animals. It is just a tiny trickle in the stream of abuse on human and animal life and our environment but we need to start actively stemming the flow.

Dances Alone

Subject: [Green Mail] Green MEP Jean Lambert Calls On EU To Replace Animal Experiments

NEWS RELEASE From The Office Of Jean Lambert, London's Green MEP

11th February 2007

GREEN MEP JEAN LAMBERT CALLS ON EU TO REPLACE ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS

Green MEP for London, Jean Lambert, has joined animal protection groups across Europe in calling on the European Union to increase action to replace animal experiments. As Europe's 20 year old law governing animal experiments undergoes a much needed review(1), campaigners are calling for greater action and urgency in replacing animal experiments with more ethical and scientifically reliable non-animal research techniques.

Jean Lambert, a Member of the European Parliament for the Green Party, which is against testing on animals, has added her name to a Europe-wide petition being collected in 11 European languages and supported by animal groups across the EU such as Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK(2). The petition was launched by the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, the UK's leading non-animal medical research charity.

Says Wendy Higgins, Communications Director for the Dr Hadwen Trust:

"There's unlikely to be a better moment than this for the European Union to really commit to meaningful action to replace animal experiments. Animal research is not only cruel, it also has significant scientific limitations which mean it can never be relied on to guarantee human health or safety. Modern non-animal techniques are the way forward and now as Europe's animal testing legislation is reviewed, legislators have it within their power to put non-animal replacements at the heart of Europe's research agenda. We want to see real commitment to targeted action and massively increased efforts."

Jean Lambert MEP commented: "Europe's 'animal testing' legislation - Directive 86/609 - is desperately out of date. Animal Experimentation is cruel, unnecessary and whilst the public vote with their feet increasingly making a conscious decision to buy products and brands against testing on animals, clearly flies in the face of public opinion.

"We have previously called for a complete and permanent ban on the testing and sale of cosmetics and medicines tested on animals and will once again remind the EU Commission of this demand urging them to bring this, and other animal protection policies, into modern legislation."

The directive does not regulate large areas of animal experimentation such as 'basic research' (including much medical research). Consequently, pan-European efforts to find non-animal replacement techniques have tended to overlook these areas, despite the fact that they offer some of the most significant opportunities for making progress in non-animal testing.

The Dr Hadwen Trust is now urging the European Union to use the revision of Directive 86/609 as a spring board for massively increasing replacement efforts (3). There are currently more than 13 million animal experiments in Europe each year (4), with the UK the largest user of laboratory animals in Europe (5).

Says Wendy Higgins:

"The Dr Hadwen Trust's own non-animal research into illnesses such as epilepsy, cancer, meningitis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, heart disease and AIDS, proves that we don't need to make a choice between helping animals or helping people. I would encourage anyone who cares about animal and human suffering to sign our petition and help us demonstrate that European citizens want a non-animal testing future now!"
