Amid Wide Criticism, Bush Pushes for Greater Wiretap Authority

President Bush urged Congress Thursday to give him "additional authority" to continue his administration's warrantless eavesdropping program. The speech was his latest effort in several days to mark the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks by framing the election-year national security debate to political and policy advantage.

BUSH ADMINISTARTION GOES TO COURT AGAIN

Opening briefs were filed before the U.S. Supreme Court last Thursday in a case challenging the Bush administration's reluctance to issue regulations to control global warming. California and 11 other states have joined with environmental groups in a lawsuit they hope will compel the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take action to curb the release of heat-trapping carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.

UPDATE ON RICE CONTAMINATION

Last week, Organic Bytes reported on the USDA's announcement that a variety of genetically engineered (GE) rice unapproved for human consumption has contaminated the U.S. food supply. Since then, Japan has banned imports of U.S. rice, while the EU is requiring that all rice imports from the U.S. be tested for contamination. With the U.S rice industry in turmoil, the USDA admits it has no idea how extensive the contamination is. Rice farmers say they don't feel the USDA is adequately monitoring the biotech industry. "This is real money that farmers are losing," said Arkansas Rice Growers Association Executive Director Greg Yielding, who said he has fielded dozens of calls from frantic rice farmers. "It is a big deal. We do not feel that USDA and APHIS have adequate funds or staff to do this job. They can't tell you where anything is even though they get permits for it." GOVERNMENT REPORT OFFERS SOBERING STATISTICS

ABOUT THE 2006 FARMER Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service issued updated estimates regarding 2006 farm income. Here are some quick statistics from the report:

* Net farm income is forecast to be $54.4 billion in 2006, down from 2005 by $19.4 billion (a 26% decline).

* Government payments are forecast to decline $6.2 billion.

* The average family farm will generate 86.7 percent of their income from off-farm sources in 2006. In other words, less than 14% of income is generated from the farm, itself.

TOWARDS A "DO-SOMETHING CONGRESS"

In last week's issue of PR Watch ( http://www.prwatch.org ), author Conor Kenny gave readers some insight into the work ethic of the U.S. Congress in 2006. Pointing out that President Harry S. Truman infamously derided the 1947-1948 Congress as the "Do-Nothing Congress" for meeting for only 108 days, Kenny ponders what Truman would have thought of our modern-day Congress, which is projected to spend only 79 days in session in 2006. "While most Americans returned from their holiday vacation in the first week of January, the House took nearly the entire month off, commencing the session on January 31st," says Kenny. "In February, the House met for only 47 hours, an average work week for many Americans." As the 2006 election season heats up, the Organic Consumers Fund needs your help to build a new Congress that will work hard to bring issues of environmental sustainability and human health to the forefront of American politics. Invite your local candidates to take part in a survey that will help voters determine where they stand on these important issues here: http://organicconsumersfund.org/voterguide.cfm

Anger over late phone mast letter

A mobile phone company has admitted a letter concerning its application for a mobile phone mast 150m from a Cornish primary school went out late.

Ericsson Services says there was an error in sending the letter to St Francis School in Falmouth.

Some parents say they have not been given enough time to object, and a decision by Carrick Council is likely to be delayed for another week.

Ericsson Services say councillors have known since July.

Carrick was due to decide on Friday if it could agree the application for the mast at the Falmouth Business Park or would want more detailed plans.

But Mike Dobson, corporate affairs manager for Ericsson Services, said the letter to St Francis had gone off later than planned.

Mr Dobson said a letter was despatched on time to the nearby St Mary's School.

He also said the mast will be safe and will not be pointed at either primary school.

How to displace Iraqi oil with energy efficiency

Washington Free Press
by Roger Lippman

09/06

The problem: a war that has cost $250 billion (as of May 2006), with no plausible explanation except to gain control of Iraq's oil. Another large appropriation has already passed Congress. Our representatives will support this spending until there is a large outcry against continuing to fund this war. But what if we didn't need the oil? How many new 45 miles-per-gallon Toyota Priuses would it take to displace the oil we used to get from Iraq? Government policy should encourage people to junk their gas hogs in exchange for a new, high-efficiency car...

The lost moral authority of conservatism

Intellectual Conservative
by Winkfield F. Twyman, Jr.

09/07/06

When conservatives fought the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Housing act of 1968, conservatism lost its moral authority in Black America. Conservatism became stigmatized. African-Americans were not a liberal people in their folkways but liberals stood on the right side of history. And so black teachers like Ms. Walker, Ms. Taylor and countless others downplayed and dissociated themselves from conservative thoughts. At first blush, the stigma of conservative thought made sense. Conservatives opposed commonsense civil rights. Liberals stood on the side of expanding opportunity. And radicals in Black America got more air time than everyday folks. Being a Malcolm X or a Black Panther brought status and prestige at the end of the 1960s. 'Negro Conservatives' like George Schuyler and black college presidents appeared to be on the losing side of the cultural war. The stigma of conservative thought created a moral vacuum...

Why Bush came clean about secret torture prisons

CounterPunch
by Marjorie Cohn

09/07/06

With great fanfare, George W. Bush announced to a group of carefully selected 9/11 families yesterday that he had finally decided to send Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and 13 other alleged terrorists to Guantanamo Bay, where they will be tried in military commissions. After nearly 5 years of interrogating these men, why did Bush choose this moment to bring them to 'justice?' Bush said his administration had 'largely completed our questioning of the men' and complained that 'the Supreme Court's recent decision has impaired our ability to prosecute terrorists through military commissions and has put in question the future of the CIA program.' He was referring to Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, in which the high court recently held that Bush's military commissions did not comply with the law...

The news media dutifully trot after the president, giving him lead play on the news in speech after speech

Know nothing news

09/07/06

No matter how outrageous Bush's assertions, no matter how they fly in the face of the reality of what even his Pentagon is saying about Iraq, the news media dutifully trot after the president, giving him lead play on the news in speech after speech. Whether he's howling about 'cut and run' Democrats or asserting, yet again, that the mire of Iraq is a central battlefield in his War Against Terror (read War Without End), the format of news is predictable: Amplify the president's dire predictions, let him brainwash the public a little bit more, then dutifully -- for the sake balance, of course -- give the opposition a quick soundbite or a few lines to disagree. I realize, like it or not, that George Bush is the president. And, as a former reporter and editor, I know the norms of news: As the holder of the nation's highest official [sic], the president has the luxury of setting the agenda. Fair enough. But saying the same things over and over is not really setting an agenda. It is running a political campaign, one of the few things this president has ever done effectively...

The paradoxes of the Bush presidency

Christian Science Monitor
by Pat M. Holt

09/07/06

In the first presidential debate of 2000, George W. Bush emphasized his military restraint. 'I would be very careful about using our troops as nation builders. I believe the role of the military is to fight and win war and therefore prevent war from happening,' he said. That view changed greatly after Sept. 11, when he proclaimed a policy of spreading democracy throughout the world -- even, evidently, if it requires US troops to act as nation builders. The part of the world where he chose to start that campaign, however, was one of the areas least attuned to it by culture and history. This is just one of the many paradoxes that mark Mr. Bush's presidency. Another paradox is that, in the name of spreading democracy abroad, Bush is doing things that tend to destroy it at home. One of the first acts of a scared, compliant Congress after 9/11 was to pass the misnamed USA Patriot Act...

Want hassle-free air travel? The government says you may have to register with them, pay money, and go through a background check to sign up for a proposed new program intended to ease security hassles at airports for individuals. ... The 'Registered Traveler' program would be run entirely by airports, airlines and contractors that would register pre-screened flyers and usher them through security. Homeland Security would oversee the programs at airports, according to an interview with Chertoff cited in USA Today. ... Ladies and gentlemen of America, think about this 'Registered Traveller' program very carefully. Your government is considering asking you to undergo a background investigation to prove that you are not a terrorist in order to have an easier time passing through airport security. Plus, they want you to pay for the privilege. ... Oh, I know the answers to it, but I'll ask anyway: When the h... did the American people lose their will to stand up to their own government and say, 'ENOUGH!' The GOP, RIP

For libertarians, the GOP is a total loss: like the neocons and the old 'Scoop Jackson' Democrats, they are bad on everything, including domestic policy. Today, whatever skeptics of the government's power to effect positive change, at home and abroad, still exist inside the Republican Party are lonely guardians of a nearly forgotten tradition. This is the party of Big Government, and Big Ambitions overseas: in the new Bushian GOP we are witnessing the triumph of 'National Greatness' Republicanism. Gone is the plain, republican cloth coat: in its place GOPers flaunt the imperial purple. Libertarians no longer have any place in the GOP coalition, and any who remain will have long since betrayed their ostensible devotion to liberty. The Republican Party is today hopelessly authoritarian. Maddened by war, its leaders are so corrupted by power and their desperation to hold on to it, that they will resort to any tactic, any subterfuge, no matter how contemptible and/or self-defeating. A victory in Europe for seals

Please ask others to help end the seal hunt

I have some great news! I want to share with you an important victory in our efforts to close European markets for seal products, a vital step to end Canada’s commercial seal hunt.

The European Parliament has issued a Written Declaration calling for a ban on the import, export and sales of harp and hooded seal products. IFAW and other groups successfully lobbied more than half of all MEPs (Member of the European Parliament) to sign the resolution which will now be forwarded to the European commission and the Council of Ministers.

A European ban will help reduce demand for seal products and send an important message to the Canadian Government that the European Union wants no part in this cruel hunt.

The import of whitecoat harp seal and blueback hooded seal furs and furskin products (taken from pups younger than 2-3 weeks) was banned in Europe in 1983, but sealers now wait a few days until harp seal pups have moulted their white fur to kill them, with 95% of the seals killed still under three months old. The products of these baby seals are still imported into the European Union.

The declaration states that the last time the annual number of seals now being killed were slaughtered in the 1950s and 1960s the seal population was reduced by two thirds. It also states that on average sealers receive less than 5% of their income from sealing which provides only a few days' work each year.

A number of EU countries (Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy) have already taken steps to ban the trade in seal products, and others (the UK and the Netherlands) are considering their own bans.

Please help us keep the momentum going by Taking Action to end the seal hunt today.

P.S. It’s critically important that we capitalize on this victory by adding new activists to fight for baby seals. This is a great opportunity to show others that we can win this fight with their help. Can I count on you to tell five new people about our efforts to end the seal hunt?

08. September 2006

No Dirty Gold campaign’s call for responsible gold mining

More than 6,000 of you took action on August 23 and told Target to support the No Dirty Gold campaign’s call for responsible gold mining. Thank you for taking action.

Target acknowledged it received your faxes. We are hopeful that Target will soon add its name to the growing list of retailers that have endorsed No Dirty Gold’s goals.

But there's more you can do. You can write a letter to your local newspaper letting its readers know they have the power to change the way gold mining is done. And if you're one of the first 100 activists who notify us that your letter was printed, you will receive a No Dirty Gold t-shirt.
http://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_lte

The editorial section is one of the most-read parts of your newspaper and it offers an opportunity to build awareness in your community about the impacts of gold mining.

We have provided suggested language for your letter. Please adapt it to suit your community and your background. If there is a Target store within the circulation area of your paper, use your letter to urge Target to sign the Golden Rules.

It is usually helpful to relate your letter to topics the newspaper has covered recently. Newspapers generally limit letters to the editor to between 100 and 200 words.

To the editor,

I was shocked to learn the production of a single gold wedding ring generates 20 tons of mine waste on average. This waste contains toxic materials, which often pollute nearby water sources and compromise the environment of local communities that may have had no say in the opening of the mine.

About 80 percent of newly mined gold is used in jewelry. Some jewelers understand this and are calling on the mining industry to clean up its act. These jewelers have endorsed the No Dirty Gold campaign’s criteria for responsible gold production called the Golden Rules.

Many jewelers have not expressed their support for responsible gold production. The next time I visit a jeweler, I will ask if they have endorsed the No Dirty Gold campaign’s Golden Rules. I urge other consumers in this community to do the same.

Alternative text for Target localities: Many retailers, such as Target, have not yet expressed their support for responsible gold production. The next time I’m at a Target, I will ask them to endorse the No Dirty Gold campaign’s Golden Rules. I urge other consumers in this community to do the same.

Sincerely, [Make sure you include your name, address, and telephone number in your letter. Some newspapers verify authorship before printing letters.]

Check your newspaper's letter to the editor requirements in its editorial page or on its Web site. After submitting the letter, please send us a copy and monitor the paper to see if your letter is printed.

Fall is a time of new opportunities and responsibilities for students returning to school. The same is true for the class rings vendor Jostens.

Tell Jostens to support responsibly mined gold.
http://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_jostens

In February 2006, the No Dirty Gold campaign http://act.oxfamamerica.org/ct/07AwXnF1RRFN/ named Jostens one of the eight jewelry retailers lagging behind other retailers in its support for responsible gold production. As students return to campus and Jostens begins its biggest sales season, the company has another chance to show its commitment to the environment and human rights.

Tell Jostens http://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_jostens that the pride class rings signify is undermined by the environmental and human rights costs of irresponsible gold mining. Remind them that it is their responsibility to show it respects the values of the institutions its class rings represent.

As you know, Oxfam America works to end poverty, hunger, and injustice. Tell Jostens http://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/ndg_jostens to do its part by endorsing the No Dirty Gold campaign's Golden Rules.

Bezirk in Wien:

From republic to empire?

Reason
by Ronald Bailey

In the wake of the 9/11 atrocities, President George W. Bush asserted sweeping powers that no prior president had ever claimed. He ordered indefinite detentions of American citizens, created secret military tribunals, authorized the torture of 'enemy combatants,' threatened to prosecute journalists and others for disclosing national security secrets, and monitored Americans' e-mail and phone calls without warrants. The so-called War on Terror is the justification for this unprecedented expansion of executive authority. The United States is the most powerful nation in the world. In the first century BCE, the Roman Republic was the most powerful nation in the Western world. Does this suggest a worrying parallel? Will history repeat itself? (for publication 09/11/06)

Elected officials threatening property rights

Texas Straight Talk
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

09/04/06

It's clear that many political and business interests are only too willing to drive people literally out of their homes to make way for the grand schemes of those in power. This is why every American needs to understand that property rights are the foundation of a free society. Without property rights, all citizens live subject to the whims of government officials. When government can seize your property without your consent, all of your other rights are negated. Our founders would roll over in their graves if they knew that the takings clause in the Fifth Amendment was being used to justify unholy alliances between private developers and tax-hungry local governments...

Playing the terror card again

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

09/07/06

President Bush acknowledged on Wednesday, for the first time, that the CIA has been holding top al-Qaida prisoners, including Khalid Sheik Mohammed, in secret prisons. Bush announced that 14 such prisoners would be transferred to the Pentagon's custody at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The president also said that those prisoners would be tried before a military commission and, consistent with a Supreme Court ruling in July, would be afforded the protections of the Geneva Conventions. This announcement may appear superficially to constitute a reversal, or even a capitulation, by the Bush administration, but there are significant political benefits to be gained from the White House's maneuver, including election-season pressure on lawmakers to support policies the administration has pursued all along for the 'war on terror'... What is victory?

AntiWar.Com

09/07/06

The president has often contended that we must continue the fight until we have achieved victory in the war on terror. However, since we are fighting insurgents, terrorists, and other ad hoc groups, how will be know when we have achieved victory? Unlike World War II, there will be no one to surrender to us. Even if Osama bin Laden were to surrender, an impossibility, it would not mean victory in the war on terrorism...

Destroying liberty to save it

LewRockwell.Com
by Ryan McMaken

09/07/06

Relying on the false premise that immigration numbers are at historically unprecedented levels, anti-immigration advocates have managed to whip a sizable portion of the American public into a nationalistic frenzy against immigrants. In general, illegal immigrants are targeted as the more politically acceptable scapegoat, and these immigrants, we are told, come to the United States to do nothing other than steal jobs from Americans, live off the welfare state, inconvenience us with their strange foreign languages, promote bizarre political movements, or simply introduce their inferior foreign ways into our pristine civilization. While many of these arguments made against immigrants are based on little more than pop-psychology and pseudo-science, not all of them are, and we can't conclude that opposition to open borders and unrestrained immigration is necessarily a bad thing. There are good reasons to oppose them...

Bush admits existence of CIA gulag

BBC News [UK]

09/06/06

President Bush has acknowledged the existence of secret CIA prisons and said 14 key terrorist suspects have now been sent to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The suspects, who include the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, have now been moved out of CIA custody and will face trial. Mr Bush said the CIA's interrogation programme had been 'vital' in saving lives, but denied the use of torture. He said all suspects will be afforded protection under the Geneva Convention...

Bush to unveil plans for Gitmo trials

Associated Press

09/06/06

President Bush pushed Wednesday to resuscitate his plan to subject Guantanamo Bay detainees to special trials, a key policy in his anti-terror strategy that was struck down by the Supreme Court. The White House asked television networks for live coverage of Bush's announcement later Wednesday. The president has said he eventually wants to close the Guantanamo prison, as critics and allies around the world have urged. But White House spokesman Tony Snow said the president was not going to announce any such plan Wednesday. 'We want to bring to justice those who are detained there,' Snow said...

New Research Points to "Climate Time Bomb"

New research is raising concerns that global warming may be triggering a self-perpetuating climate time bomb trapped in once-frozen permafrost. As the Earth warms, greenhouse gases once stuck in the long-frozen soil are bubbling into the atmosphere at a rate five times faster than originally measured, according to a study in Thursday's journal Nature.

CORPORATE MEDIA EXPOSED BY A PROGRESSIVE WHO GOT INSIDE

In his new book, Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media, Jeff Cohen takes you inside TV news and the conservative biases, timidity and tabloidism that dominate it. Few media critics have been afforded an intimate, on-the-job view of the outlets they condemn, but Cohen -- who founded the media watch group FAIR -- spent years at CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. He was a senior producer at MSNBC's Donahue during the run-up to the Iraq war, and witnessed war-enabling bias and censorship firsthand.

He tells all in a biting, humorous paperback taking aim at the entire rightwing hot-air brigade that Cohen saw up close: O'Reilly, Hannity, Buchanan, Novak, Falwell, etc. (Ann Coulter wouldn't debate him.) The book includes a foreword by Jim Hightower.

MOLLY IVINS says: "Jeff Cohen's dissection of cable TV news is both irresistibly funny and civically painful. It goes from uproarious anecdotes to those that make you wince."

IF YOU LIKED "OUTFOXED," YOU'LL LOVE CABLE NEWS CONFIDENTIAL. The book has won praise from Robert Greenwald, Tim Robbins, Studs Terkel, Bob McChesney and others.

Schreiben Sie direkt an Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel.

Mast not wanted near new homes

DAN GRIMMER

04 September 2006 12:14

Families moving into new houses could find they have an unwelcome neighbour - a 25 metre high mobile phone mast.

Mobile phone firm Three, formerly Hutchison 3G, was to install a mast with dishes and equipment on land owned by Toucan Hire Services in Havers Road, Mile Cross.

Protesters have sent objections to Norwich City Council and say it would be unfair to families moving into new homes being built next to the site.

The area used to be used for industrial purposes and was used by Harmers shoe factory, but in the last couple of years hundreds of homes have been built on the site - with the next set of homes currently being built due to be occupied later this month.

It comes just days after the Evening News reported how Three wants to put up a mast just yards from Eaton Park and families living nearby.

Steve Morphew, Labour leader of the city council, said: “We have got an area which has gone from being an industrial area to being a very nice residential area.

“Putting an 81 foot aerial there might have been fine for what the area used to be, but isn't now. The visual intrusion is the reason we want to object.

“Of course people are concerned about the health implications, but I think we have a strong case against giving planning permission based on the visual impact.

“There is a real sense of unfairness about the people who will be moving into the houses nearby. They won't have had the opportunity to know the mast is proposed.

“It might be some people had done searches on their home before this application was put in and do not know it has been submitted.”

Mr Morphew said he had put in a letter of objection on behalf of about 20 people who live in the homes that have already been occupied on the site.

One of the objectors, a 41-year-old graphic designer, who lives on Junction Road opposite the site of the proposed mast, said he was worried that radiation outfall could be cancerous and the mast would be a blot on the landscape.

He said: “They should put it up on the Sweet Briar Industrial Estate which is not near homes. It will stick out like a sore thumb whenever I look out of my window.

“It is going to tower 30 feet above the trees and will destroy the look of that lovely green space of Anderson's meadow.”

Another objector John Russell, who lives on Drayton Road, said: “I don't like the way that Norwich City Council is going about this. It's inappropriate that they should push this through before the residents move in.

“They should defer it until the residents have been consulted. These families are going to move in and they won't want this big contraction on their doorstep.”

William Comery, spokesman for Ericsson Services Ltd, which is setting up the masts on behalf of Three, said it would be up to the planning authority to decide on the mast.

But he said: “We looked at about a dozen to 15 possible sites in that area and approached various freeholds. This was the only one which came through in terms of meeting our needs, but was also the most suitable in fitting in with the environment.

“It is in a group of industrial units, 50 metres from the road and further away from residential properties.”

The Evening News 'Put Masts On Hold' campaign has called for no mobile phone masts to be installed near homes or schools until they are conclusively proved to be safe.

Are you battling a mobile phone mast application where you live? Telephone Evening News reporter Peter Walsh on 01603 772439 or email peter.walsh@archant.co.uk
