The Ohio Secretary of State has effectively shut down voter registration drives in the state

Sign our petition urging Ohio lawmakers to rescind new, burdensome rules severely restricting our ability to register new voters in traditionally disenfranchised communities.

Dear ...,

As you may know, Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell is at it again, abusing his power by disenfranchising already underrepresented communities in the coming elections. Election Protection 365 is not taking it sitting down.

Secretary of State Blackwell effectively shut down all voter registration efforts in Ohio when he enacted regulations a week and a half ago that severely restrict the operations of groups seeking to register traditionally disenfranchised voters. Under these new regulations, compensated voter registration workers must turn in the forms they collect directly to elections officials, and not to the group sponsoring the voter registration drive. This means that voter registration groups can’t keep good records – and that means they can’t do the necessary follow up to make sure the voters actually make it onto the voting rolls (and we all know we’ve seen problems with that in the past!).

As if that weren’t enough, these new rules also threaten criminal penalties for individuals registering voters if they do not exactly conform to complicated, burdensome procedures. The threat of criminal prosecution will have such a chilling effect that no one will want to risk engaging in voter registration efforts that expand democracy and empower their communities, and poor people, young people and African Americans will be shut out of our democracy.

On June 26, the Ohio Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR) will have the opportunity to reject the Secretary of State’s new policy and they need to hear from you! Even if you don’t live in Ohio, your voice matters – this type of blatant voter suppression in any state sets a dangerous precedent that all Americans have an obligation to speak out against.

People For the American Way Foundation is launching an online petition against Blackwell’s unjust regulations. Sign it today and an e-mail will go directly to JCARR members registering your opposition to this blatant voter suppression.

http://www.pfaw.org/go/OHSuppression

We’ve already had one victory in this battle. Due to backlash from civil rights organizations, the media and everyday citizens, Blackwell announced Thursday that he would rescind one part of the rule that had required certain registrations to be hand-delivered, and not mailed. While this is a step in the right direction, too many unnecessary burdens remain.

Shutting people out of the democratic process is not the American Way. Weigh in against this right-wing attack on voting rights by signing our petition today!

After you sign the petition, please forward this e-mail to your friends and ask them to show their support for voting rights by signing as well.

Together in the struggle,

Sharon J. Lettman
Vice President for External Affairs and Director of Election Protection 365 People For the American Way Foundation

P.S. You can also support our work to protect voting rights, ensure the fair administration of elections, and register new voters by making a secure online contribution today.

P.P.S. June 26 is my birthday, and I’d really like to celebrate a victory on that day. Tell JCARR to give me the birthday present I deserve – stop the madness!

Mystery of the mast solved

By Kevin Barnes

It is known as the home of the Derby and for affording spectacular views of the London cityscape on a crystal-clear summer afternoon.

But last week Epsom Downs was more talked about for being the site of a 30m-high hydraulic platform casting a slender shadow on the Old Paddock. The cherry picker was the source of speculation last Wednesday as neighbours tried to decipher just what purpose it was serving.

A quick call to Epsom and Ewell Borough Council ended all doubt: the lift was intended to test the visual impact of a proposed 30m mobile phone mast.

When the old grandstand at Epsom racecourse is demolished in September, a hub of two dozen transmitters will be pulled down. Six affected mobile phone operators are seeking permission for a replacement grey lattice tower with 28 antennas, 20 microwave dishes and 26 cabinets. continued...

David Smith, chief executive of the borough council, said: "It's unusual to do something like this, but this is a fairly sensitive location.

"The dummy mast will allow us to evaluate the visual impact in the flesh, rather than just superimposing something on to a photo."

Not everyone seemed entirely convinced about using a "pole" to judge whether breathtaking vistas will be marred by a giant radiation-emitting device. Sarah Clayton, secretary of Epsom and Ewell Environ- ment Forum, said: "It doesn't seem the best way to go about it, but you can see where the top will be, then use a bit of imagination."

Demos delay masts

By Matt Wilkinson

Jem Duckmanton, eight, leads the protest at the Chester Arms

People power has brought a halt to plans to build mobile phone masts on two pubs in Oxford.

Residents living near the Marlborough House in Grandpont and The Chester Arms in Chester Street, East Oxford, have been protesting against mast plans by mobile phone company T-Mobile.

Now the firm has put installation on hold after hundreds turned out at public meetings to oppose masts being planted on the pubs.

On Wednesday, more than 50 residents living near The Chester Arms took to the streets in a bid to get the plans rejected. continued...

Protester John Lo Breglio said: "Our protests have been the main cause as they don't want the bad publicity.

"This mast would have gone up two weeks ago if we hadn't found out about it by chance.

"This would have been a done deal and we'd be looking at a phone mast out the window now.

"But T-Mobile has only put the masts on hold and it's still the same situation until the plan is scrapped."

T-Mobile did a deal with pub owners Punch Taverns which allows them to install masts on some of its 90 pubs nationwide.

Although an estimated 80 pubs across the country will house the masts, T-Mobile has agreed to review the plans for two in Oxford.

Around 100 residents met T-Mobile executives last week to oppose the Chester Arms proposal and neighbours com- plained about similar plans at the Marlborough House last month.

Protesters armed with placards met outside the Chester Arms yesterday to keep the heat on the phone firm only hours after it decided to suspend plans.

Gordon Simmons, of T-Mobile, said: "T-Mobile has decided to place the proposals to site mobile phone base stations at the Marlborough House and Chester Arms public houses on hold while we consider other options."

The company would not comment on what other sites it was looking at or whether its plans had been scrapped or just postponed.

Nick Trueman, of Punch Taverns, said: "We've got no plans at the moment for masts on other Punch Taverns in the area."

Chester Arms landlord John Dunkley fears customers will boycott the pub if the 3G mast gets the go-ahead.

The firm has permitted development rights at the pubs and does not need planning permission.

The Marlborough House mast is also opposed by parents and governors of nearby St Ebbe's Primary School in Whitehouse Road. The rear entrance to the school grounds is opposite the pub.

Why We Are Suing the State of Nebraska - Omaha School Segregation

You may have heard recently of our decision to join a lawsuit filed against the State of Nebraska because of its plan to re-segregate public schools in and around the city of Omaha. For well over 50 years, the accepted law and practice of this nation has been to honor the principles of Brown v. Board of Education. Naturally, we are very concerned about any legislative action that would attempt to bury the progress we've made as a nation and return our children to separate and unequal systems of education.

History and research tell us that over 40% of African American public school students nationwide attend school where more than 75% of the students are poor. Additionally, schools with high concentrations of minority and low-income students are more likely to employ inexperienced and/or non-certified teachers. In Nebraska, 70% of African American public school students are educated in Omaha Public Schools. Keeping them in separate and unequal schools denies them the quality education they deserve.

The State of Nebraska recently passed Legislative Bill 1024 ("LB 1024"), a law we believe threatens quality public education for all students in three important ways. First, LB 1024 orders the division of the Omaha public school district into three racially identifiable school districts. Second, LB 1024 in effect could foreseeably decrease fairness and equity in public school funding. Third, the law erects barriers that, left unchallenged, could deny students the positive benefits of integration.

The NAACP and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed a lawsuit challenging the segregation plan based on its unconstitutionality and its attempt to retreat from the law and legacy established by the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954. The plaintiffs in the case are the Omaha Branch of the NAACP, the African American Achievement Council and the families of a racially diverse group of Omaha students.

Our lawsuit is specifically asking the courts to enjoin the State of Nebraska from creating three racially separate and distinct school districts and breaking up Omaha Public Schools. The State of Nebraska does not have the right or authority to intentionally further racial segregation in its public schools. Legislative Bill 1024 denies Omaha Public Schools students of color the equal protection of the law as guaranteed by the fourteenth amendment to the United States Constitution.

The NAACP will continue its firm stand in the pursuit of social justice and equal opportunity while opposing any and all forms of social inequity and racial discrimination. In Nebraska, we will continue to fight for the rights of all students to benefit from a fair and equitable quality education.

Michael T.S. Wotorson

Documents May Link Cheney to Halliburton No-Bid Iraq Contract

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that the Department of the Army, per order of US District Court Judge Ricardo M. Urbina, has released to Judicial Watch approximately 100 pages of documents which detail the multi-billion dollar, no-bid contract awarded in 2003 by the Army to Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR), a subsidiary of Halliburton Co. One document uncovered by Judicial Watch suggests the United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) may have publicly lied regarding the involvement of the Vice President's office in awarding the contract.

He sings, 'I grabbed her little sister and put her in front of me. As the bullets began to fly, the blood sprayed from between her eyes, and then I laughed maniacally.' TO END THE OCCUPATION WE MUST SPEAK OUT AGAINST IT

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum320.php

This week Congress is taking up campaign propaganda masquerading as a debate on Iraq. The House measure put forward without opportunity for amendment, H.Res. 861, defies any member of the House to vote against a resolution that twice proclaims that we should honor our troops, and declares that any schedule to draw down our forces there must by definition be "arbitrary".

Our fallen service members deserve better.

The entire strategy of terrorists in the Middle East has been to engage us into fighting them "over there", driven by irrational and baseless fears of weapons of mass destruction, which the Bush administration has exploited shamelessly for the benefit of their war profiteers. There were no terrorists in Iraq to got to war AGAINST, except ones the Bush and Cheney themselves elevated by their reckless occupation. And continuing the occupation will just breed two more insurgents for every one they manage to pick off in a photo-op bombing.

But there are candidates for Congress who see through the charade, like Stacey Tallitsch, running in the Louisiana 1st district. Here is what Stacey has to say about the occupation:

There is just no other way to put this; it is plainly self-evident and clear. The War in Iraq is a complete failure. George W. Bush’s dream has wrought nothing but death and destruction to both the United States and Iraq.

Iraq is making terrorism worse. It's a breeding ground. We're sowing seeds to a bitter fruit we never wanted and certainly don't need. We need to leave as soon as possible without creating a regional war. We are not helping the Iraqis by staying. They are building their imperfect institutions and they must live with the result.

We need to get out of Iraq as soon as possible. And then we need to take quick action to hold those responsible for the greatest error ever perpetrated on America.

And here is Stacey's action page on ending the occupation:

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum320.php

There is absolutely nothing that would deflate the insurgency in Iraq faster than a definite committment to give the Iraqis back control of their own country, and they know it. It is only our foolish White House and the insurgents themselves who strive to draw us in deeper and attack even more Muslim countries.

THE CALL TO ACTION RADIO SPOT CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

Those living in Los Angeles know that since the L.A. primary challengers ran their call to action radio spots on impeachment, another group has now picked up the ball to run their own call to action spots on Air America Radio. Just as we promised, your donations have had impact beyond the elections themselves by raising the visibility of this issue. And Stacey Tallistch wants to do the same thing with the end the occupation issue.

So for those who are blessed to be able to do so, please consider making a donation so Stacey can start running his own call to action radio spots, to open up an issue activism front in Louisiana as well.

STACEY TALLITSCH DONATIONS: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/donations.php

And if you can't do that, there is something JUST as important that you can do to help, and that is to get involved in the virtual phone bank project. If you could just dedicate a little time to make 10 phone calls a week, to reach out to potential supporters of brave candidates like Stacey Tallitsch, and if we do this every week between now and November we can reach an amazing number of people with the issue activism message.

While we are setting everything up for Stacey, please assign yourself a Blades of Grass password, and it will be good at any of the virtual phone bank installations we will be doing, and we'll let you know where you are most needed.

Mobile phone mast opposed

Jun 15, 2006

A 50ft "monstrous" mobile phone mast near a Netherton school is being opposed.

O2 has applied to site the equipment on Cinder Bank, sparking fierce opposition.

If approved it would be next to Corbett Garage and near Hillcrest School and Community College.

Ward councillor Martin Bradney said he feared for the health of pupils at the Simms Lane school and the mast would spoil views from Saltwells Nature Reserve, which backs onto the proposed site for the telecommunications equipment.

He said: "I am no scientist and although the hazards of radiation emitted from masts have not been proved neither have they been disproved." He added that he would support any campaign by residents to block the application.

O2 said it needed a mast to increase network coverage in the area. Spokesman Jim Stevenson said: "I can say categorically that there are no health risks."

NATION'S LARGEST DAIRIES TRYING TO AVOID MONSANTO'S BOVINE GROWTH HORMONE

The largest retailers and distributors of milk and dairy products in the U.S. are considering eliminating rBGH from their products. According to the trade journal Dairy Food and Market Analyst, Wal-Mart and Dean Foods have begun pressing suppliers for a larger supply of milk produced without rBGH, in response to increasing consumer demand. The synthetic hormone rBGH is a genetically engineered drug designed to make dairy cows produce more milk. The controversial hormone has been banned in Europe and Canada due to its links to increased risks for cancer and antibiotic resistance. Despite these bans, 18% of U.S. dairy cows, especially those on factory-style farms, continue to be injected with the drug. Over the past few years, millions of consumers have switched to milk and dairy products from organic farms, which ban the use of rBGH and antibiotics. Starbucks, by the way, is still serving up coffee drinks across the country that are laced with rBGH--another good reason to patronize local independently owned coffee shops that offer organic and Fair Trade alternatives.

Kommentar von Barbara Loe Fisher:

Just about anyone with an M.D. or Ph.D. can call themselves an "ethicist" these days and feel free to appoint themselves judge of who will live and who will die. There is a tendency for public health types employed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to believe they are in charge of deciding which groups of individuals within society are expendable for the "greater good." Whether it is maintaining that the casualties of forced vaccination are expendable or, in the case of this pandemic flu "study," that babies and children under 13 and parents and grandparents over 40 are expendable, these elitists wield the ugly utilitarian rationale like a club. Those who believe utiliitarianism has a shred of morality within its philosophy, should read the post World War II transcripts of The Doctor's Trial at Nuremberg. Revealed there, for all the world to see, is why it is dangerous and inherently immoral to use the utilitarian pseudo ethic to support any State policy. Emanuel and Wertheimer's suggestion that babies and children under 13 are expendable and should be denied vaccine in a lethal flu pandemic is forcing a "Sophie's Choice" on parents and grandparents over and under 40. It is a non-starter. However, if an experimental pandemic flu vaccine is as dangerous as the flu it purports to protect against, ironically the policy of denying the very youngest ones the vaccine might end up saving them. In the 1918 influenza pandemic, about one-third of the population became infected and about 10 percent of those infected died. The vaccine benefit risk ratio might well tip in favor of either escaping infection or recovering naturally from the disease rather than deliberately taking a risk with an experimental pandemic flu vaccine. But if a pandemic flu vaccine were really the low risk lifesaver it is meant to be, a more humane prioritizing of scarce vaccine supplies might be to allocate them to those with the greatest chance of dying from the infection. And that would be entirely dependent upon the nature of the particular influenza virus circulating and whether it was especially lethal for certain groups of individuals. The serious business of deciding who gets a lifeboat when the ship is sinking should involve people from all segments of society. The people, not the "experts," should decide.

Battle Lines Drawn Over Mercury in Shots

States push for bans in children's vaccines. But leading medical groups are pushing back. As lawmakers in about 20 states press for bans on mercury in children's vaccines, they are meeting stiff resistance from influential health and medical organizations, including groups that get substantial funding from drug makers and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seven states have adopted the anti-mercury bills - California being one of the first. California's law, passed in 2004 and to take effect July 1, will prohibit shots with more than a trace of thimerosal for pregnant women and children younger than 3. In recent weeks, similar bills have been defeated in at least five states. (...)

http://www.nvic.org

Mercury is a neurotoxin. In countries around the world, mercury is being eliminated as a toxic pollutant from the water and air because it can damage the brain. Every government, every politician, e- very medical and scientific organization, every doctor inside of government as well as those operating the World Health Organization should call for a ban on injecting mercury into the bodies of ba- bies via vaccines. It is a "no-brainer" so to speak. It should be against the law to inject poisons in any form into our children for any reason.

Debate Flares Over Vaccines, Autism Link

Debate over a possible tie between mercury-containing vaccines and autism flared up this week as activist groups launched a campaign accusing federal health agencies and prominent researchers of manipulating scientific findings on the link. Some parents of autistic children have long blamed vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal for an alarming rise in the disor- der. Thimerosal contains a type of mercury. A series of reports by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) ending in 2004 concluded no evidence could be found linking the vaccines to neurological diseases, including autism. (...)

"As we're looking for answers related to the causes and effective treatments for autism, we have to also be careful not to base our health recommendations on unproven hypotheses or fear. We have to base our decisions on the best available science that we have in front of us, and today the best available science indicates to us that vaccines save lives, and that's a very, very important message for all of us to remember. " - CDC Press Release 4/6/06

Comment from Barbara Loe Fisher, http://www.nvic.org :

Whether or not vaccines save lives has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not vaccines cause autism. The CDC not only refuses to conduct basic science research into the biological mechanisms of vaccine injury and death, including vaccine-induced autism, but manipulates the data it does have suggesting there is a causal connection between vaccination and developmental delays that now af- fect 1 in 6 American children. As a result, some vaccine injured autistic children are being healed by biological mechanism research independent of government health agencies, medical organizations and drug companies that addresses the children's vaccine-induced brain and immune system dysfunction. The collective denial by government, medical organizations and industry of the reality of vaccine-induced brain damage will not make it go away.

Mercury ban bill wins OK

"A bill that would eliminate mercury from all vaccines distributed in New Jersey by 2009 was approved by the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee Thursday. The measure passed 8-1 with one abstention. The committee's chairman, Assemblyman Herb Conaway Jr., D-Bordentown City, a doctor, cast the lone "no" vote. Some committee members said they were voting "yes" with reservations. Two months ago, a group of parents and advocates descended on the committee to try to persuade them to eliminate the use of Thimerosal, a preservative in flu vaccines that is 50 percent ethyl mercury by weight. They claimed a connection between that mercury and autism or other childhood neurological disorders. But Conaway, saying no national health experts had found a scientific link, held the bill at that time. No additional testimony was heard Thursday. (...)

Comment from Barbara Loe Fisher,
http://www.nvic.org

Banning mercury in vaccines is a no-brainer. Congratulations to the New Jersey citizen activists who educated their state legislators on this health committee about the need to keep toxic mercury out of the brains of babies. Vaccine laws are state laws. If the federal government cant' or won't get the drug companies to take mercury out of vaccines, the only recourse for parents is to ask their elected state officials to do the right thing or vote them out of office and put someone in who will. Participatory democracy works if each citizen stands up and acts on the local level like these New Jersey parents who helped their legislators understand why a vote to keep toxic mercury out of vaccines is the only right one.

13 phone masts are enough says mayor

THE new mayor of South Ribble has hit out at the explosion in the number of phone masts in Bamber Bridge.

Coun David Watts, who is the ward councillor for Bamber Bridge, decided to speak out after an application for another mast was submitted to South Ribble Borough Council.

If plans for the 20m mast at Old Lemon House, on Seedlee Road, were granted it would mean two phone masts situated within 400 yards of each other as one is already on Dodd Way.

Masts

A third has also been erected on Walton Summit Road on the road adjoining Seedlee Road.

Coun Watts says enough is enough, and does not want to see any more masts added to the 13 in Bamber Bridge.

He said: "It would seem that Bamber Bridge has relinquished its title of hot food capital of South Ribble, but that now seems to be replaced by the title of hot airwaves capital of South Ribble.

"I understand that many of the mobile phone networks are competing with each other to get the best possible coverage, but do we need another to add to the 49 already in the borough?"

Coun Watts has been in touch with Orange, which is applying for the mast on Seedlee Road, to get some answers, but was baffled by their response.

Mobile

He said: "Orange has said that it wants to increase the coverage to customers on the M65 and M61. This raises an important question: Should we as a council be encouraging people to use their mobile phones while driving?

"You cannot object to a mobile phone on their perceived health risks, but surely if there is a law to stop people using mobile phones while driving then it is an actual risk. Why do we really need another mast?"

Nearby residents and businesses have been notified of the application and so far, the council has received no objections.

A decision will be made by the South Ribble Council planning committee.

A spokesman for the Mobile Operators Association said: "Site and mast sharing by operators is a priority, but while it cuts down the number of mobile phone masts in the landscape, it can also have adverse environmental impacts.

"In some cases, local planning authorities and communities prefer to see several smaller masts, rather than a larger one. In others, mast sharing may not be possible because the existing site is not in the best place for the oncoming sharer's coverage needs.

"In terms of the coverage to motorways it is sometimes the case that passengers in vehicles need to use mobile phones, or indeed some drivers if they break down on the hard-shoulder and do not want to walk to the next emergency phone box. "

Heading off a 'Coal War' with China

Boston Globe
by Derrick Z. Jackson

06/14/06

In 1972, while toasting Premier Zhou En-Lai during the landmark visit to China, President Nixon asked, 'What legacy shall we leave our children? Are they destined to die for the hatreds which have plagued the old world, or are they destined to live because we had the vision to build a new world?' Despite a disgraced presidency, Nixon was credited with melting that aspect of the Cold War. Today, China and the United States have the Coal War. President Bush could salvage a portion of his legacy by ending it. We are not fighting each other for the resource. Instead, we burn it up in our parallel universes and toast the planet like no one else. The United States currently spews out the most global warming emissions in an endless drive to satisfy the highest level of materialism on earth...

Kerry demands US troop pullout

Boston Globe

06/14/06

Senator John F. Kerry is placing himself at the center of congressional action over the war in Iraq this week with a crisply worded resolution to require President Bush to withdraw almost all US troops by the end of this year. The measure has exposed Kerry to attacks from Republicans and some Democrats, as critics rushed to tag the plan as a 'cut-and-run' strategy. But it also has made him a rallying point for antiwar activists. The sweeping resolution amounts to the senator's sharpest condemnation of the war and his broadest repudiation of his own vote to authorize force. It also stands in contrast to his handling of the war issue during his campaign for president two years ago... Bush rejects calls for Iraq pullout

06/14/06

President Bush, just back from Iraq, dismissed calls for a U.S. withdrawal as election-year politics and refused to give a timetable or benchmark for success that would allow troops to come home. 'It's bad policy,' Bush said in a Rose Garden news conference Wednesday, about six hours after he returned from Iraq. 'I know it may sound good politically. It will endanger our country to pull out of Iraq before we accomplish the mission'...

Top Dems' split on Iraq shows party's struggle

San Francisco Chronicle

06/14/06

In a span of 90 minutes Tuesday, three prominent Democrats offered competing visions of how to proceed in Iraq and displayed how difficult it will be to turn what was once the Republican Party's strongest asset into its electoral downfall. ... Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, a leading contender for the Democratic Party's 2008 presidential nomination, told a gathering of nearly 2,000 liberals that the war was a 'strategic blunder' but warned it would not be in the nation's interest to 'set a date certain' for withdrawal. She was followed by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, who told the same group the war was a 'grotesque mistake' and that troops should be withdrawn 'at the earliest practical date.' Moments later, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the party's standard bearer in 2004, said he had made a mistake by voting to authorize the president to use military force in Iraq, and he called for a 'hard and fast deadline' for troop withdrawal...

Call for the Closure of Guantanamo

Human rights violations continue at Guantanamo Bay and we need your help now. This past weekend three detainees reportedly committed suicide at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, highlighting the tragic results of extended arbitrary and indefinite detention.

With many of the approximately 460 men detained in Guantanamo well into their fifth year of detention, the vast majority without charge or trial, a growing number have resorted to desperate measures such as hunger strikes and suicide attempts.

It’s time to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. Send a message to President Bush and Secretary Rumsfeld http://tinyurl.com/f775v and ask them to:

- close the detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay and not transfer the lawlessness to another location,

- conduct an independent investigation into the deaths of the three detainees, and

- end the policy of indefinite and arbitrary detention of alleged terrorism suspects.

After you submit your letter, please be sure to tell your friends and family to do the same. The time to act is now. There is no better time with news of these apparent suicides fresh on the Administration’s conscience.

As always, thank you for your commitment to preserving human rights around the world.

Ramsey Clark on worldwide U.S. militarization: the case for impeachment is clear beyond question

A message from Ramsey Clark

The case for impeachment is clear beyond question.

The list of Bush's crimes is long. The “Shock and Awe” invasion was Bush’s war of aggression -- a crime identified as the “the Supreme international crime” by the Nuremberg Tribunal. Remember Falluja, the American Guernica, a virtual destruction of a defenseless city by superior military technology (36,000 homes, 8,400 shops destroyed in the final assault alone); Abu Ghraib, the shameful celebration of sick forms of sexual torture; Haifa Street, Baghdad, where a U.S. helicopter gun ship killed 13 unarmed people and injured 50 dancing around a burned out Bradley Armored Vehicle; Abu Shifa, a small village, where U.S. soldiers were accused of rounding up civilians, forcing them into a room, then opening fire, killing 11 people, including a 75 year-old, a 6 month-old baby, and five children under the age five; Haditha, where Marines murdered 15 defenseless civilians, and injured many more, most women and children; and tiny Guantanamo, where the U.S. has compiled human rights violations in four years that have been denounced by the entire world including the United Nations. Yet President Bush arrogantly refuses to close the Guantanamo prison, or return the land and sovereignty to Cuba while U.S. officials fret over three prisoners who committed suicide in one day to “embarrass the U.S.”

The grand total of civilian deaths in Iraq is probably more than 250,000, and rapidly growing. (The Lancet Medical Journal) U.S. military deaths exceed 2500, the seriously injured number more than 15,000 and the number who will suffer mental and physical impairment from the occupation of Iraq is in the unknown tens of thousands.

What respect for human dignity! What reverence for life! What better way to make enemies?

The necessity for citizen action to secure impeachment is also clear beyond question. The Congress will not act unless We, the People demand it and vote those out of office who fail to respond.

Our government is geared for war as directed by transnational corporations, domestic industries, and the corporate media.

Both branches of our One Party system, Democrat and Republican, favor the use of force to have their way. Consider,

* (1) Regime Change in Iran (1953) the Shah replacing democratically elected Mossadegh; Eisenhower (R);
* (2) Regime Change in Guatemala (1954) military government for democratically elected Arbenz; Eisenhower (R);
* (3) Regime Change in Congo (1961) assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Eisenhower (R)
* (4) the Vietnam War (1959-1975), Eisenhower (R), Kennedy (D), Johnson (D), Nixon (R);
* (5) Invasion of Dominican Republic (1965), Johnson (D);
* (6) Contra Warfare against Nicaragua (1981-1988), resulting in regime change from the Sandinistas to corrupt capitalists; Reagan (R);
* (7) Attack and occupation of Grenada (population 110,000)(1983-1987) Reagan (R);
* (8) Aerial attack on the sleeping cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, Libya, (1986) Reagan (R);
* (9) Invasion of Panama Regime Change (1989-1990), George H. W. Bush (R);
* (10) Gulf War (1991), George H. W. Bush (R);
* (11) "Humanitarian" occupation of Somalia leading to 10,000 Somali deaths (1992-1993) George H. W. Bush (R) and Bill Clinton (D);
* (12) Aerial attacks on Iraq (1993-2001) Bill Clinton (D);
* (13) War against Yugoslavia (1999) 23,000 bombs and missiles dropped on Yugoslavia, Bill Clinton (D)
* (14) Missile Attack (21 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles) destroying the Al Shifa Pharmaceutical Plant in Khartoum which provided the majority of all medicines for Sudan (1998) Bill Clinton (D);
* (15) Invasion and Occupation of Afghanistan, Regime Change (2001-present) George W. Bush (R);
* (16) War of Aggression against Iraq and Hostile Occupation (2003)-present) George W. Bush (R);
* (17) Regime Change in Haiti (2004) Democratically elected Aristide for three years of chaos and systematic killing, George W. Bush (R).

There have been major aggressions every several years.

Remember that every Congress in the past half century has approved excessive military budgets and the last three have approved increases that have made the U.S. military budget larger than those of all other nations combined.

The U.S. will remain a military threat to the world until it vastly reduces its military expenditures. The single highest priority for peace is cutting the U.S. military budget. The United States government may have been able to outspend the Soviet Union into economic collapse in the Cold War arms race, injuring the entire planet in the process. Now Bush has entered a new arms race and is provoking a Second Cold War with China. Yet what can China do, as the U.S. builds a first-strike oriented missile shield and uses Japan and a huge advanced military base at Pyongtaek on Korea's west coast, not 500 miles from Beijing?

The U.S. at this time is capable of striking any place on earth with a nuclear armed missile within one hour of the order to fire, launched from a Trident II, or other nuclear weapons system. We are at this time spending billions on a new generation of nuclear weapons that can be used tactically, against four blocks of Falluja, or an alleged Al Queda camp in Pakistan. At the same time, we threaten Iran and others for seeking to develop nuclear energy with the claim that they may build a crude bomb. Yet the only defense a nation today has to U.S. militarism is the threat of nuclear retaliation. The U.S. is seeking total dismantlement and prohibition of all weapons of mass destruction everywhere else, because it possesses the vast majority of all WMD’s and far superior delivery systems.

George Bush loved being a War President while he was winning - winning over the bodies of impoverished and defenseless people, that is. Someone told him only war presidents can be great presidents. He will love war again if his polls go up.

President Bush would rather make enemies by the use of force to have his way, than seek agreement with friends by helping others and recognizing their rights and interests. He prefers to go it alone, and then entice or coerce whatever help he can get from others, whether it is for Iraq, global warming, the prohibition of land mines, or the use of minors in war, addressing hunger, poverty, AIDS, natural disaster relief, or most United Nations activities, and absolutely, the International Criminal Court which might indict him. He is spared defeat at the polls because he cannot seek re-election.

He can be held accountable only by impeachment. The American people must not acquiesce to his crimes.

Consider that all the major candidates, Democrat and Republican -- Clinton, Edwards, Kerry, McCain, Frist, -- voted for the war and/or favor the Iraq Occupation.

To stop U.S. militarism, the U.S. must vastly reduce its military expenditures, 50% in five years and further down from there on. It must use those savings to combat poverty, hunger, sickness and unemployment at home and abroad.

The U.S. must seek friends by word and deed, rather than make enemies. The harm George Bush has done to the way the rest of the world sees our country will take a generation to overcome, after we change our warlike ways.

But the only way to convince the world that We the People do not approve of the conduct of George W. Bush is to impeach him. Otherwise we can only be seen as approving of his acts, or as powerless to prevent them.

And the only way we can deter the next, and future Presidents, from seeking war rather than peace is to impeach George W. Bush and his key advisors now. Only then will political leadership know the American people will not accept more war.

Last week ImpeachBush.org placed an ad calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush on the second page of the internationally read newspaper, USA Today. The impeachment movement has placed similar ads in the Boston Globe, the New York Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. The time to impeach is now. This movement has grown with your continuing support. Please make a donation to the campaign today so that the movement will grow in the coming months. Click here.

Predator Poisoning and Killing Planned In Wilderness Areas

Oppose new predator control rules
http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/wilderness_predators

The U.S. Forest Service just announced plans to relax rules that govern "predator control" in federal Wilderness areas and Research Natural Areas of our National Forests. The move would greatly expand the ways that wolves, coyotes, cougars, bears, foxes and other predators can be killed in these areas, and it signals a very disturbing shift in the way our public land is managed.

The proposed rule would permit aerial gunning and motorized vehicles in Wilderness areas to trap and kill predators and meet nebulous "wildlife management" objectives, which would be created by industry-driven "collaborative groups." The rule would also allow notoriously dangerous "M-44" cyanide guns to be used in Wilderness areas, even though these devises have accidentally killed thousands of family pets and non-targeted wildlife. Please take a minute to write the Forest Service and demand that it reverse this disastrous plan – and instead put its energy and resources towards ensuring these animals continue to grace the wild.

Wir lassen uns nicht residieren

Projektvorschlag: „Wir lassen uns nicht residieren!“
v. Wolffram Vorwerk (Dresden)

Doctors forbid roles in harsh interrogations

The 544-member house of delegates, which sets policy for the leading U.S. physicians group, voted at its annual meeting to approve a seven-page report that outlined a physician's duty "as healer" not to take any part in interrogating prisoners.

DAVID Hicks is being subjected to sensory deprivation having been returned to solitary confinement in a concrete cell after previously surviving 244 nights and days without sunlight or human contact. This is in clear violation of the third Geneva Convention.

Postmark Guantanamo: Why is the Pentagon keeping prisoners’ mail from their lawyers?

Paracha, 58, decided to write a letter to 98 U.S. senators describing his plight. The senators haven’t responded, though it’s hard to blame them. They don’t know the letters exist. The Department of Defense won’t release them for delivery.

Kummerkasten macht dicht Kummer bleibt

#Die Linkspartei.PDS: Pressemitteilungen

14. Juni 2006
