Can the Democrats muster a strategy to counter the "stay-the-course" Republicans?

Bush's Iraq Offensive

The Iraq War as a Trophy Photo

"A peace activist should keep a photo in his or her wallet of a small Iraqi child torn to pieces - a constant reminder to live like others are dying," writes David Swanson. "The trouble is that we find it almost unbearable to look at such images. We believe the war would end if the corporate media showed such images, yet we turn our faces away if they're placed in front of us; even more so, if they happen to be images of torture or of soldiers enjoying humiliating Iraqis."

The Other Cheney Behind the Scenes

"Since 2005, Dick Cheney's daughter Elizabeth has held a powerful position guiding Middle East policy," writes Robert Dreyfuss. "And like father, like daughter: Liz is a key player in the push for regime change in Iran and Syria."

DeLay's Mission Continues

"What is the born-again East Texas Christian word for chutzpah? Whatever you call it, DeLay displayed enormous amounts when he, a GOP party boss who long fought for the expansion of federal government influence over all areas of Americans' private lives up to and including when to pull the plug on brain-dead relatives, castigated liberals for wanting 'more control over people's lives and decisions,'" writes Robert Scheer.

Animal Bill of Rights

A message from Sophia

Original Message:

Hi!! Some of you have emailed me and let me know that the link didn't work for you in the previous email I sent out. I am sorry about that; I put the direct link at the very bottom of this email. Thank you for letting me know that it didn't work instead of just ignoring it! This is a very important petition. Thanks again,

Kristy

Animal Bill of Rights

The struggle to end cruelty to animals is not an easy one. But there is something easy you can do right now to make a difference in the lives of abused animals. It's as quick and simple as typing in your name. Through the Animal Bill of Rights, we are working to show Congress a groundswell of support for legislation that protects animals and recognizes their rights. Ultimately, we hope the petition will be a bill. In the meantime, the thousands of signatures on this petition send a clear message to our legislators that Americans strongly support legal protection for animals. When animal-related legislation is proposed, Congress will remember the huge number of signatures on the Animal Bill of Rights. With that in mind, they will cast a vote for the animals.

Sign the Animal Bill of Rights

Florida Turnpike System killing thousands of animals

Turnpike

Air Date: 06/13/2006

Reported by: Carmel Cafiero

When it comes to the Florida Turnpike - you might think the only thing "wild" is the way some people drive. But there are also thousands of animals co-existing with the cars and trucks in neighboring wetlands. In tonight's Carmel On The Case, investigative reporter Carmel Cafiero shows why the animals living in one section of South Florida are in danger.

WSVN--It might seem like a piece of the everglades.

There are fish who cruise along as if they own the waterway.

Lizards - large and small - who hang on limbs and rest on logs.

Birds looking for lunch and finding it.

Even a family of coots waiting for their eggs to hatch.

But all these creatures aren't living in the everglades, they're living in canals along florida's turnpike.

And it's all being covered up in Broward County to add more lanes from Griffin Road to Atlantic Boulevard.

Bev Hoppe: "There's some poor fishes getting it right there."

That's Bev Hoppe talking to her home video camera.

She took these pictures as the canal behind her home was filled in.

Bev Hoppe: "Oh I found it very sad. I kept saying you know - the poor critters, ya know, all the critters are dying - but nobody care about fish and turtles."

Lots of fish and lots of turtles.

The 500 million dollar project will affect 21 miles of what a spokesperson calls - ditches.

Ditches originally dug back in the 1950's.

Nicole Kalil: "With construction we needed the ditches back to make room not only for the roadway but also for the sound walls which a lot of these neighbors have advocated for very heavily throughout the years."

But some neighbors are also concerned about the wildlife that has flourished along the waterways in the fifty something years they've been around.

Loretta Murray: "Buried alive - all these animals couldn't escape. Where are they going to go to? It's a travesty. It's a graveyard now."

Captain Dan Kipnis: "It says to me we're gonna lose a lot of species - fish, birds, reptiles, snakes, alligators and turtles - things that are normally here - we're gonna lose them."

Captain Dan Kipnis is on the board of directors of the Florida wildlife federation - a citizens organization.

He says the area is much more than ditches.

Captain Dan Kipnis: "There is value to this. Obviously its got animals living in it. We've taken a lot of wetlands out of South Florida - we can't lose more."

Wetlands are critial to the environment because they support a wide variety of plants and animals and are protected by federal law.

But when we asked the spokesperson for the turnpike, she maintained wetlands were not being destroyed.

Carmel Cafiero: "Is this considerd a wetland - area?"

Nicole Kalil: "Again it's - it's a ditch."

Carmel Cafiero: "Is it consider a wetlands area?"

Nicole Kalil: "Not that I know of, but again I will look to experts if you'd like me to find out."

The spokesperson later told us by phone - look up wetlands in the dictionary.

So we took it a step further and contacted the U.S. Army corps of engineers.

It says these areas are considered wetlands.

The corps only issued a permit for the project after turnpike officials agreed to keep this area from peters road to broward boulevard and plant native wetland species.

The records also reflect the turnpike will have to pay into a fund that purchases and preserves wetlands.

Carmel Cafiero: "The Corps of Engineers determined this project will not jeopardize critical habitat for threatened or endangered species. As for the critters that won't live through the project - its the price of progress."

Nicole Kalil: "I think the most important thing to know about this project is that there's no intentional cruelty when the water drains a majority of the wildlife goes out with it."

A bright spot here - those eggs we showed earlier - have now hatched.

The baby birds will be able to fly away when their little piece of paradise - is the next to be paved.

Urgent Flag Day Alert: Free Speech at Risk

I write today to urge you to take action on a matter near and dear to my heart -- free speech. The ACLU urgently needs the help of everyone across America who values our Constitution and the fundamental freedoms it protects.

Here is the situation -- the Senate is poised to vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow Congress to prohibit desecration of the flag. This amendment would restrict certain freedoms in the Bill of Rights for the first time in our history, setting a dangerous precedent that puts all of our liberties at risk.

With your help, the Senate has blocked the flag amendment in past years. This year, the vote is closer than ever. Election-year political posturing has taken over in the Senate and we are now within just one vote of losing this fight.

It is critical that you take action right now at http://action.aclu.org/flag. Urge your senators to protect free expression and vote "no" on the flag amendment.

Free expression and the right to dissent are core principles that the American flag represents. Our liberties can only remain vibrant and strong when we stand by these principles. If exceptions are made every time someone in power disagrees with a particular act or statement, our liberties will surely be compromised.

From my travels around the country, I know that many military veterans strongly oppose this amendment because they know the cost of freedom and believe that measures like this would unnecessarily restrict the very liberties they fought to defend. They also understand that the flag amendment is a distraction from the real concerns of veterans, like adequate health care and VA funding.

Congress should not be sacrificing our First Amendment freedoms in order to mobilize some politicians’ political base.

I urge you to contact your senators right now and tell them to vote "no" on this proposed amendment. If passed, it would betray the very principles the flag represents. http://action.aclu.org/site/R?i=2-V6vWg5unL62epzNcy6bg..

If you would like to read more before taking action, go here. http://action.aclu.org/site/R?i=zxH1QuMJqYHOTS_HCaqsBQ..

Sincerely,

Nadine Strossen President, ACLU

P.S. We'll need all the supporters we can muster in this battle. Once you've taken action, get your friends involved by sending them an eCard about the Flag Amendment.

Fear for My Daughter: Ft. Lewis soldier refusing to return to Iraq arrested

Sara Rich is the mother of an AWOL US soldier. Facing three deployments to Iraq in less than four years, Sara's daughter Suzanne Swift searched her soul and decided that she could not go back to Iraq and continue to go out on what she calls "useless missions." Nor could she continue to cope with the constant sexual harassment and fear of rape by her own officers and fellow soldiers that she had to endure. On Sunday night, the city police of Eugene, Oregon, without a warrant, raided Sara Rich's home and took Suzanne away. She was taken to Fort Lewis, Washington.

Amnesty International: EU and US "Partners in Crime" on CIA Flights

Amnesty International urged European states on Wednesday to stop being "partners in crime" with the United States over the alleged kidnapping of terrorism suspects and their transfer to countries that use torture. In a report and a letter addressed to EU leaders meeting on Thursday and Friday in Brussels, the human rights groups backed accusations that the US Central lntelligence Agency ran secret transfer flights and that European countries were aware of it.

US opens new war front in North Africa

Asia Times
by Jason Motlagh

06/14/06

Despite a setback in Somalia, where anti-Islamist warlords recently lost control of the capital, Mogadishu, to a jihadist militia, the United States is plunging into a far vaster set of commitments, stretching across the 'Wild West' of Saharan Africa. Over the next five years, Washington is expected to spend US$500 million on an overt counter-terror program to secure what it has dubbed the latest front in its 'global war on terror.' Detractors insist the move could backfire and have the same unintended consequences as in the Horn of Africa, albeit on a much larger scale with even more at stake...

I don't see this as an end. It's far from ending. I see it as the start. They will do it to another family, family after family. Postmark Guantanamo

In These Times
by Christopher Hayes

06/13/06

After the U.S. Senate voted last year to strip Guantanamo detainees of the right to habeas corpus, you'd think it would have dashed the hopes of the desperate prisoners that the world's greatest deliberative body would prove their salvation. But Saifullah Paracha is apparently an eternal optimist. In March, after 18 months in Guantanamo, Paracha, 58, decided to write a letter to 98 U.S. senators describing his plight. The senators haven't responded, though it's hard to blame them. They don't know the letters exist. The Department of Defense won't release them for delivery. 'He lived in the United States,' says Paracha's lawyer G. T. Hunt. 'He's a pro-American person. He believes in American justice. He believes that if he can get a hearing he'll get out'...

It's official: Lying's not illegal

The Nation

06/13/06

Early this morning, Robert Luskin, Karl Rove's lawyer, told reporters that special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald had sent him a letter stating that Rove would not be indicted in the CIA leak case. In a statement, Luskin declared, 'We believe that the Special Counsel's decision should put an end to the baseless speculation about Mr. Rove's conduct.' Bush administration (and Rove) advocates will spin this news as vindication for the mastermind of George W. Bush's presidential campaigns. But there is no need for baseless speculation to conclude that Rove was involved in the leak and that the White House misled the public about his participation and broke a pledge to fire anyone who had leaked information about Valerie Wilson, the CIA officer married to former ambassador Joseph Wilson, a critic of the administration. Here is what is known about Rove and the leak...

Hillary Rodham Clinton faces anti-war critics

Many of these people existed in the Republican Party. T-Mobile at it again, too

LET THERE BE LIGHT - AT LAST

Monday, June 12:

Hemelhempstead Today

Residents and councillors in Hemel Hempstead are fuming after a major telecoms company replaced street lamps with telephone masts and faulty new lighting. According to residents in Gadebridge and Warners End, perfectly good lamp posts were removed by a contractor in November last year on the orders of mobile phone giant T-Mobile.

The street lamps, in Galley Hill and Long Chaulden, were replaced with lamp posts carrying telephone masts and new lighting that did not work.

Residents and local councillors tried for months to find out why they had been left in the dark but could not get any answers from the contractor hired by T-Mobile.

A spokesman for T-Mobile confirmed that the phone masts were working and said the company was aware that there was a problem with the street lighting.

Anger at mast next to house

Jun 12 2006

By Gareth Deighan,
The Evening Chronicle

Jo Moore outside her Whickham home

A council is threaten-ing action after a mobile phone mast was put up without planning permission.

Jo Moore, 63, was made aware of an application by phone company O2 to put up the mast last year but was under the impression it had been denied planning permission.

Then the mast appeared outside her home in Holme Avenue, Whickham, Gateshead, and she says it now dominates the view from her front windows

Mrs Moore, who has lived in her two-bedroom semi-detached house for the last 20 years, said: "This is ridiculous. I went to all the meetings and heard everything that was said and it just wasn't allowed.

"So you can imagine my surprise when I saw it has been put up anyway.

"I went to the council and they told me that the phone company didn't have permission and something was going to be done.

"It has spoiled what you can see from my house. I woke up one morning, looked out of my window and there it was. There was no warning."

Gateshead Council confirmed the mast had been put up by the company without the proper permission and said when O2 approached them they were given preliminary planning permission.

A spokesman for Gateshead council said: "Getting planning permission for something like this is a fairly long process and O2 were in the midst of that process.

"But they did not get their final plans approved by us and put up the mast anyway which is not acceptable and we will be taking action.

"In the area of Holme Avenue there are already some masts and it is therefore difficult to refuse planning permission for more. But in this case the phone company have put this up without proper permission."

But a spokesman for O2 said the situation was a matter of paperwork. "We are in talks with Gateshead Council about the mast and as far as we're concerned, they are going well and we will be able to come to some sort of arrangement with them," he said.

"It is a matter of paperwork and we are confident the mast will be allowed to stay."

Mrs Moore said: "My neighbours and I think the mast is horrendous and we want to see it gone."

ACTION: Help save whales

As you know the worlds whale populations are in danger. The future of these beautiful creatures was dealt a huge blow today with when pro- whaling nations, led by Japan, succeeded in winning their first vote at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 20 years.

The non-binding decision stated that the 20-year moratorium on commercial whaling was "no longer necessary". It also blamed whales for depleting fish stocks and said non-governmental organisations were a threat.

The short-sighted action occurred because four small pacific island nations (Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Nauru and Kiribati) changed their votes and voting alongside the pro-whaling nations such as Japan and Norway. It has been suggested that Japan, in particular, has put a lot of aid money into the pacific in the hope of gaining the votes of these smaller countries.

I would like to encourage you to write to the governments of these countries (Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Nauru and Kiribati) to express your concern at their sudden support for commercial whaling. I am very hopeful a demonstration of public opinion will sway the governments of these countries the next time the issue is voted on.

Stop The Slaughter

action at the International Whaling Commission meetings I’m writing you from St. Kitts, site of the 58th meeting of the International Whaling Commission. Our ship, the Arctic Sunrise, after being refused entry for more than a week, entered the waters of St. Kitts today to stage a peaceful protest. We landed on the beach and began placing more than 866 whale tails in the sand to symbolize the number of whales slaughtered by the Japanese government this year. Ten of our activists have already been arrested.

The International Whaling Commission meetings have just ended, and they dramatically displayed how narrow a margin exists between the pro-whaling and anti-whaling nations. A mere 2 votes (remember that number!) prevented Japan from eliminating conservation efforts for dolphins, porpoises, and small whales; and implementing a secret ballot. The Japanese delegation also narrowly lost their bids to abolish the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, exempt themselves from the commercial whaling ban, and kick Greenpeace out of the IWC meetings.

And you should know that your efforts played a major role in these victories. Due to pressure from concerned people around the world, including thousands of emails and faxes from you, Guatemala and Honduras decided NOT to attend the IWC meetings. Those two votes made all the difference. THANK YOU!

But after losing several votes, Japan pulled out all the stops, and actually won a non-binding resolution pronouncing that whales are guilty of over-fishing – by 1 vote! That’s right, the Japanese succeeded in convincing more than 30 nations that whales eat too much fish! And that wasn’t the only fishy thing that happened during the meetings. One of Japan’s pro-whaling allies arrived late to the meetings with their membership fees in cash, in a brown paper bag.

TAKE ACTION
http://usactions.greenpeace.org/action/start.php?action_id=106

We've taken a stand against Japanese Whaling, now it's your turn to send a strong message!

The stage is clearly set for next year’s meeting in Alaska, and it will take everything we have to turn the tide. Now more than ever, the fight to protect whales is at a critical phase. That’s why we’ve announced that we’ll be returning to the Southern Ocean this winter to confront the Japanese whalers again.

Please, support our efforts, follow this story, and share the news with your friends and family.

Sincerely,

Buffy Baumann

China, Russia Object to Weapons in Space

China and Russia yesterday told a U.N. body that the threat from space-based weapons would be equal to that posed by weapons of mass destruction, Reuters reported (see GSN, May 11).

The U.N. Conference on Disarmament is looking to begin negotiations on preventing an arms race in outer space. The United Kingdom and United States have expressed their opposition to such talks (see GSN, May 18).

Russian Ambassador to the conference Valery Loshchinin likened the weaponization of outer space to the “emergence of a new type of weapon of mass destruction.”

“If there are no weapons in outer space, no room for the use of force, then there will be no arms race there. We must nip it in the bud,” he said.

“A world free of outer space weapons is no less important than a world free of the weapons of mass destruction,” said China’s ambassador to the conference, Cheng Jingye.

“The development of outer space weapons keeps progressing quietly and relevant military doctrine is taking shape,” he said.

The White House is expected issue a new space policy for the first time in a decade this month, according to Reuters (Stephanie Nebehay, Reuters/Yahoo!News, June 8)

Ask Marshallese government to vote for whales

http://prefs.greenpeace.org/mail-links/clicks/23792.2561633.5409

This week, the Marshall Islands government will meet to decide how they vote at the International Whaling Commission.

Under pressure from the Japanese government, the Marshall Islands are widely expected to side with pro-whaling nations, This means that pro-whaling nations could resume control of the IWC. Japan expects the vote of the Marshall Islands to tip the balance.

This island country could hold the fate of the whales in their hands!

Don't let the Marshall Islands go down in history as one of the countries which brought about an end to whale protection.

Urge the Marshall Islands to vote with their consciences and save whales. Your message will go to President Kessia Note, Minister of Foreign Affairs Gerald M Zakios, and Chief Secretary Robert Muller.

Please provide the following information necessary to send the letter 'The world is watching: vote to save whales!'.

Anger after mast ruling is overturned

Long-time resident says she will probably sell up due to health fears

By Debbie Leigh

RESIDENTS are furious after the Government overturned a decision by Leeds City Council to refuse planning permission for a mobile phone mast.

A government inspector dismissed the health fears of residents in Roundhay living near the BP Gledhow Service Station on Roundhay Road, where the 12-metre mast will be installed. They are bitterly disappointed at the decision.

Nazreen Ahmed who has lived near the site for more than 20 years said she was so horrified by the potential health risks she would probably move house.

Mrs Ahmed, who lives at Well House Drive with her husband, mother-in-law and two young children said: "I'm worried about all the radiation you hear about and it will affect us directly as we are not too far away from it.

Overrule

"If it does go up we will be strongly considering moving house. Why have a local planning department and procedures if the Government is just going to overrule the decision? If it's not right for the local authority the Government shouldn't interfere."

The application by T-Mobile was refused in September last year after local councillors raised concerns about the health threat and the impact of the mast on the appearance and character of the area.

But an inspector allowed an appeal by T-Mobile and has now approved the plan.

Coun Valerie Kendall (Con, Roundhay) said: "With the effect on public health unclear, residents are understandably concerned. However when it comes to phone masts this case shows that the Govermnent can simply push those local concerns to one side in favour of big business with the stroke of a pen."

Other residents living near the site said they were worried by the decision.
Mohammed Rashid moved to Well House Gardens three weeks ago and said he would have objected to the plan if he had known about it. He said: "My son suffered from eczema and I have heard phone masts are not very good for eczema sufferers."

Under planning rules, a mobile phone operator is entitled to appeal a decision to an Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Leingarten verhindert Monsanto-Testfeld

Monsanto ignoriert alle Risiken und will unbeirrt weitere Sorten in Europa etablieren.

The post-Zarqawi "years"

Mother Jones
by Tom Engelhardt

06/12/06

Let me, on this, be neither conservative, nor cautious. Every now and then, you have to rely on history as your guide. And hasn't this happened to us enough? Don't we know that, in every turning-of-the-tide moment in Iraq, it soon turns out that, despite the hoopla, our tide was ebbing and someone else's invariably rising? A number of experts are already suggesting that Zarqawi's death will have 'minimal impact' on the Iraqi resistance and may, in fact, serve to strengthen it by removing the most divisive and detested oppositional figure in the country; or perhaps, as the superb independent journalist Nir Rosen suggests in a thoughtful obit at the Truthdig website, Zarqawi's death 'was the greatest advertisement for his cause' and the path he blazed into sectarian warfare is now unstaunchable...

Zarqawi's death likely a plus for insurgency

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

06/12/06

[T]he U.S. government's propaganda machine has made al Qaeda the most overrated organization in the world and its leaders, Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the controlling force behind worldwide violent Islamic jihad -- even though they act mainly as inspiration for the movement. Similarly, in Iraq, the U.S. government needed a villain to personify the rather faceless Iraqi insurgency. The vicious and brutal Zarqawi fit the bill perfectly. The Bush administration demonized Zarqawi's foreign jihadists as the instigators and dominant force of the much larger Sunni insurgency to demonstrate that foreigners were causing most of the problems in Iraq rather than Iraqis who wanted to oust the occupying superpower. After building up Zarqawi and the jihadists, the administration could now shore up sagging public support for the war at home by nailing the bad guy in classic Hollywood fashion. Yet the administration's public relations coup is likely to be temporary and do a favor for the Iraqi insurgency and maybe even bin Laden and Zawahiri...

Stick your neck out, America!

AlterNet
by Ray McGovern

06/12/06

Several months ago, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Ehren Watada decided that U.S. involvement in Iraq is illegal and immoral. Like so many of us, Watada concluded that intelligence was manipulated to 'justify' the invasion. Unlike so many of us, he has had the courage to stick his neck out and pay the price for resistance. We should, I suppose, give the neck its due. It is a pleasant thing -- a convenient connection between head and torso. We do not risk it out of caprice. But if there is nothing for which we will risk that neck, then it has become our idol. And necks are not worthy of this status. Finally, an active duty U.S. Army officer has refused to engage in that kind of idol worship...

Apologizing for Iraq

National Review
by John Derbyshire

06/12/06

Since the Iraq war was obviously a gross blunder, is it time for those of us who cheered on the war to offer some kind of apology? Here we are -- we, the United States -- in our fourth year of occupying that sinkhole, and it looks pretty much like the third year, or the second. Will the eighth year of our occupation, or our twelfth, look any better? I know people who will say yes, but I no longer know any who will say it with real conviction. It's a tough thing, to admit you were wrong. It's way tough if you're a big-name pundit with a reputation to preserve. For those of us down at the bottom of the pundit pecking order, the stakes aren't so high. I, at any rate, am willing to eat some crow and say: I wish I had never given any support to this fool war...

Greed and noise and Tom DeLay

Fox News
by Susan Estrich

06/12/06

'I did a good job,' Tom DeLay said Thursday in his farewell speech to the House of Representatives. 'I helped build the largest political coalition in the last 50 years. The K Street project and the K Street strategy I am very proud of.' At least Republicans will have to finally stop denying its existence. The K Street Project was the business of forcing the big corporate lobbyists to hire Republicans and donate to Republicans if they wanted to do business on Capitol Hill. For years, the boys used to claim that it really didn't exist. Just a figment of overactive Democrat imaginations, they used to say. Guess again. K Street is the stretch of Washington populated by expensive restaurants frequented by fat cat lobbyists and the members and staffers who feed at their trough. But it is not simply a place, but a way of doing business...

Schoolkids use ring tone teachers can't hear

Fox News

06/12/06

Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class -- and many teachers can't even hear the ring. Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing. As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds. The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers -- not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the 'Mosquito'...

US troops leave Crimea after protests

Washington Post

06/12/06

U.S. troops sent to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea to prepare for joint war games left Ukraine after two weeks of protests organized by pro-Russian parties prevented them from carrying out their mission. Some 200 Marine reservists arrived in Ukraine on May 27 to help refurbish a training facility for the exercises in mid-July. But the protesters, who accused NATO and the United States of seeking a foothold in the ex-Soviet republic, prevented the reservists from getting on to the base. ... U.S. and Ukrainian officials said the 200 reservists began leaving the region on Sunday because their contract had ended. Russian television broadcast footage of several dozen flag-bearing protesters shouting 'Yankee Go Home!' at buses apparently carrying the Americans...

Iraq contractors make billions on the front line

CNN

06/12/06

Private military contractors are earning billions of dollars in Iraq -- much of it from U.S. taxpayers. Business is booming for those willing to tackle one of the most dangerous jobs on Earth. Lucrative U.S. government contracts go to firms called on to provide security for projects and personnel -- jobs that in previous conflicts have been done by the military. A single contract awarded to Britain's AEGIS Specialist Risk Management company by the Pentagon was worth $293 million, and while the government says it cannot provide a total amount for the contracts -- many of which are secret -- industry experts estimate Iraq's security business costs tens of billions of dollars...

It seems globalised humankind would rather self-destruct than moderate its money-making

Just to put perspective on the size of this science/truth issue, Exxon/Mobil has ploughed millions of dollars into setting up some 40 "scientific" organisations to refute or confuse the human contribution to climate change issue, and be ready "independent" commentators to the media. During the tenure of the latest Chairman, ExxonMobil has contributed some 60bn tonnes of CO2 to our atmosphere.

You might also reflect on the current moves by the Royal Society to squash science that might create awkwardness and worry people. Let's hope their attempt to have Andrew Wakefield struck off over MMR backfires.

It seems globalised humankind would rather self-destruct than moderate its money-making.

Close Guantanamo now

The Progressive
by Matthew Rothschild

06/12/06

What's it going to take to close down Guantanamo Bay? It should have been closed long ago, if Bush and Rumsfeld and Cheney and Gonzales had any respect for international law and human rights. And it definitely should be closed now, after the suicides of three detainees on Saturday morning. At the very least, there appears to have been gross negligence on the part of the guards there, who are supposed to 'observe prisoners at least every two minutes,' according to The New York Times. One of the detainees was 17 when he was captured in Afghanistan back in 2001, the Times said. ... Another one of the detainees who committed suicide was supposed to be released, but 'was not told because U.S. officials had not decided which country he would be sent to,' BBC reports, citing Mark Denbeaux, a lawyer for some Guantanamo prisoners...
