‘They’re really ugly, but we can’t do anything’ – mayor Peter Paul Busuttil

Safi mayor Peter Paul Busuttil has said he can’t do anything about three mobile phone antennas that have been installed on rooftops in the locality’s quaint village square, “even if they are really ugly”.

The antennas have been installed on the band club’s roof, the parish priest’s residence and on a private home inside the village core.

“They have to be installed somewhere but they are really ugly and have ruined the character of the square,” Busuttil told MaltaToday.

ANXIOUS Kingswinford campaigners fighting to remove mobile phone masts from near their homes have taken their battle to Europe.

Protesters marched to the High Acres Base Station with MEP Liz Lynne, who pledged to do all she could to see the equipment moved from the top of a former water tower at the summit of a hill.

Also joining them, all the way from Stockholm, was Professor Olle Johansson, who made a special visit from the Karolinska Institute in the Swedish capital, where he has established himself as one of the world’s leading authorities on electro-magnetic radiation.

A controversial mobile phone mast which sparked a campaign by residents and councillors in Telford to get it removed is due to be up and running in March.And Vodafone said it would be installing power to the structure in Malinslee in the next few weeks.

The work to the mast had been delayed while Telford & Wrekin Council consulted residents.

The authority had considered challenging a lease agreement Vodafone had over the mast but decided it could have faced “significant costs and damages” if the firm appealed.

INVERCLYDE’S planning chief is recommending that a mobile phone pole proposed for Gourock gets the go-ahead despite nearly 70 Gourock residents objecting.

Vodafone have applied to install a the 14.3 metre telecommunications pole in Kirn Drive, opposite Skye Crescent. It would be on the verge which is the boundary of the greenbelt.

THE green-light has been given for a phone mast to be installed in Holmston despite locals warning that it’s a “health hazard.”

Councillors have decided on placing the 12 metre pole next to homes and Kyle Academy at the north side of Holmston Road with promises that will boost the area’s broadband and mobile phone signals.

Several residents had objected about the visual aspects and safety implications of Vodafone’s mast on council grounds with several attending last Thursday’s regulatory panel in protest.
