Anger over phone mast plans

Oct 9 2008 by Dominic Jones, Gwent Gazette

PLANNERS are urging a mobile phone company to reconsider plans to build a mast overlooking a Six Bells school.

Blaenau Gwent Council’s planning committee reluctantly approved the proposal, but members are urging Vodafone to reconsider where the tower will be built.

The committee has been left stuck between a rock and a hard place because members are unhappy with the planned location of the 10-metre tall mast, around 70 metres from Bryngwyn Primary School, but are unable to refuse planning permission on grounds of health concerns due to Government planning guidance.

Up in arms over mast plans

10:00am Sunday 5th October 2008

By Cadisha Brown

PLANS to erect a mobile phone mast near residential homes will be a detriment to Kidderminster’s street scene, it has been claimed.

Labour Worcestershire county councillor, Nigel Knowles, believes Vodafone’s “hostile” proposal for a 12-metre high mast at the Highway Verge, next to Wolverley Road, is in an inappropriate location.

He is urging residents to object to the plans, as he says it will be placed at a “very busy” road junction and is concerned for people’s health.

“It’s a hostile application,” Mr Knowles said. “There are a lot of people who live in that vicinity. The street scene will be affected.

A call to arms over cellular antennas

Residents, concerned about radiation being emitted from mounted structures, file complaints

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As a telecommunications company nears completion of installing hundreds of poletop cellular antennas on Staten Island, residents who live near them are ramping up their fight to have them removed.

Concerns about radiation from the structures -- in which NextG Networks has mounted antennas to the top of street light and utility poles to improve cell phone reception in dead zones -- are causing residents from Westerleigh to Great Kills to file complaints with city, state and federal agencies.

It likely won't do much to help their cause, however.

Poles apart as mast bid fails

8:10am Sunday 5th October 2008

By Janaki Mahadevan

Plans for a new mobile phone pole in Shenley have stalled after councillors refused the application.

At a meeting of Hertsmere Borough Council’s Potters Bar and Shenley planning committee on September 25, councillors voted to refuse Orange’s application to erect a monopole — smaller than a full-size phone mast — in Black Lion Hill.

Just before the meeting, planning officers, who had originally recommended councillors approve the proposal, changed their report to suggest refusal.

New report reveals severe violations of workers' rights in Asian mobile phone factories

September 2008 - The mobile phone industry is often presented as a clean, unproblematic industry, but make ITfair's new report 'Silenced to Deliver' shows that this is not the case. Young electronics workers handle chemicals without protective gear. They work inhumane overtime hours to cover basic needs and are punished if they make mistakes. In the export processing zones in Asia where the factories are located, protests are often brutally suppressed.

Bemerton phone mast turned down

A PROPOSAL for a new mobile phone mast at Bemerton Heath has been turned down by planners amid fears it would spoil the surrounding nature reserve.

Salisbury District Council's city area planning committee turned down the application, at Folly Woods, despite the recommendation of officers.
