Bomb Iran now because...uh, what's the reason?

by Devvy Kidd

Yesterday morning on FAUX News Network, the morning stooges were gleefully talking about how our military could drop this big old "bunker buster" bomb on selected targets in Iran. We all know how well that has worked in the past. Well, what the heck, they're just collateral damage. Greta Van Susteren (FAUX) seems to be unable to find any new guests because she constantly has war monger, John Bolton, as her guest. Bolton's sole purpose in life seems to be that we must "bomb Iran now." Of course, that........

What Is Not Being Discussed in the Iran Nuclear Story

Bill Fletcher Jr., The Black Commentator: " Last week's announcement of the discovery of a previously unknown but suspected nuclear research and production site became a major story in the Western media. The Obama administration, along with its allies in Europe, saw this as evidence of Iranian duplicity on the matter of its nuclear intentions. Though Iran admitted the existence of this facility, the manner in which it did so seemed to be directed at heading off the expose' from other sources."

The still-missing central fact in the Iran drama

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald
10/07/09

Ever since Iran reported the existence of its Qom enrichment facility to the IAEA, one central assertion has been repeated as fact over and over by the American media to make the story as incriminating as possible: namely, that Iran only disclosed this because they discovered they had been ‘caught,’ i.e., they found out that the West knew of this facility and they thus had no choice but to disclose it. That assertion has been fundamental to the entire Iran drama. After all, if Iran voluntarily notified the IAEA of the Qom facility before it was even operational and thus agreed to have the facility inspected, it’s impossible to maintain the melodramatic storyline that Iran was planning something deeply nefarious here and got ‘caught red-handed.’ The assertion that Iran was forced into disclosure is vital to the entire plot, and it’s been constantly repeated as fact. But ever since this episode began, I’ve read countless accounts from numerous sources and never once saw a single piece of evidence to support this claim — and I’ve been actively looking for it and asking if anyone has seen such evidence...

Obama Trapped Behind Wall of Mideast Containment: It's the Iranians, Stupid

Ira Chernus, Tom Dispatch.com: "...As it turns out, the same phrase plays quite a different role in the Middle East, where Obama seems to have no intention of changing it at all. Successive administrations have adhered to a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy when it comes to Israel's sizeable arsenal of nuclear weapons. That country has never acknowledged their existence, adhering instead to another arcane formula: 'We will not introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East.'"

Is the U.S. Preparing to Bomb Iran?

U.S. officials: We're ready to take action on Iran

Administration officials told impatient lawmakers Tuesday that they are ready to take swift and substantial action against Iran if it disregards current diplomatic efforts to stop its alleged nuclear weapons program.

Public Skeptical and Hawkish on Iran

By Jim Lobe

Despite strong support for diplomatic engagement with Iran, most U.S. citizens believe such efforts will ultimately fail and that Washington should be prepared to use military force to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, according to a new poll released here Tuesday.

Don’t assume the worst about Iran

Boston Globe
by H.D.S. Greenway

10/06/09

’Confront Tehran now,’ demands former Pentagon official Paul Wolfowitz. ‘There are only two choices left on Iran,’ warns former State Department counselor Eliot Cohen. But these voices from the black lagoon of the Bush-Cheney era aren’t the only ones crying out in alarm. We seem to be painting ourselves into a corner of worst-case scenarios when it comes to Iran. But the underlying assumptions need to be questioned more thoroughly. Why would a nuclear Iran necessarily set off a nuclear arms race in the Middle East? The conventional wisdom is that the Sunni Arab powers fear the power of Shiite Persia, and would immediately reach for their own bomb should Iran produce one. But Israel’s Arab neighbors did not rush to get their own bomb when Israel was building up a nuclear arsenal. It’s because the Arabs don’t fear Israel, I am told. That was not always so...

Americans Manufacture Another Nuclear Crisis

The U.S., Britain and France staged a bravura performance of political theatre last week by claiming to have just "discovered" a secret Iran uranium enrichment plant near Qum. On cue, a carefully orchestrated media blitz trumpeted warnings of the alleged Iranian nuclear threat and "long-ranged missiles."

Re-Spinning the Laptop Of Death

Laura Rozen, in writing about a report by the Institute for Science and International Security on the so-called "secret annex" the IAEA keeps on allegations about Iran's nuclear plans, brought my attention to some serious re-spinning of the source of those allegations.

The “paranoid style,” back in style

Liberty For All
by Peter Orvetti

10/05/09

In the first chapter of his book ‘The Revolution: A Manifesto,’ Rep. Ron Paul writes, ‘A substantial portion of the conservative movement has become a parody of its former self. Once home to distinguished intellectuals and men of letters, it now tolerates and even encourages anti-intellectualism and jingoism that would have embarrassed earlier generations of conservative thinkers.’ These individuals work mainly within the Republican Party, but they are a faction of their own. Theirs is a grand old paranoia...

The lying game: How we are prepared for another war of aggression

John Pilger Blog
by John Pilger

09/29/09

The official jargon for this kind of propaganda is ‘psy-ops,’ the military term for psychological operations. In the Pentagon and Whitehall, it has become a critical component of a diplomatic and military campaign to blockade, isolate and weaken Iran by hyping its ‘nuclear threat’: a phrase now used incessantly by Barack Obama and Gordon Brown, and parroted by the BBC and other broadcasters as objective news. And it is fake...

Exit Afghanistan and leave Iran alone

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

10/02/09

The Obama administration’s quest to control the health-insurance industry has dominated the headlines for months, but finally — with the news out of Iran and Afghanistan —foreign policy has again asserted itself. It was almost easy to forget that the United States maintains a worldwide empire, but the reminders came leaping off the front pages and the television screens. Word that the U.S. commander in Afghanistan wants 40,000 more troops and that Iran has a hitherto undisclosed uranium-enrichment facility gave the empire enthusiasts something to get excited about...

It was Uncle Sam who first gave Iran nuclear equipment

The US sold the Shah of Iran's government a 5-megawatt, light-water type research reactor. This small dome-shaped structure, located in the Tehran suburbs, was the foundation of Iran's nuclear program. It remains at the center of the controversy over Iranian intentions, even today.
