In Baden-Württemberg hat sich einer Studie zufolge der Klimawandel seit 2001 deutlich beschleunigt. Wie das Landesumweltministerium am Montag (23. Juni) in Stuttgart mitteilte, erhöhte sich die Temperatur im Land im relativ langen Zeitraum von 1931 bis 2000 im Jahresdurchschnitt um 0,8 Grad Celsius, während allein zwischen 2001 und 2005 der Anstieg bereits bei 1,0 Grad lag.

Wegen der abschirmenden kalten Meereszirkulation und der gewaltigen Eismassen ist die Antarktis klimatisch stabiler als die Arktis. Trotzdem wird auch in der Antarktis eine rapide Zunahme der Eisschmelze festgestellt. Ein Abschmelzen der Antarktis lässt den Meeresspiegel um ca. 60 m ansteigen.
