Biofuels Boom Spurring Deforestation

Nearly 40,000 hectares of forest vanish every day, driven by the world's growing hunger for timber, pulp and paper, and, ironically, by new biofuels and carbon credits designed to protect the environment.

Brazil's Ethanol Push Could Eat Away at Amazon

Just an hour's drive outside this traffic-choked metropolis where President Bush kicked off a Latin American tour yesterday, sugar cane fields stretch for hundreds of miles, providing ethanol. But a top UN environmental official is warns that an increase in ethanol production poses risks to Brazil's Amazon rain forest.

Speak out to save Canada's old-growth forests!

The Manitoba government still has not honored its pledge to permanently protect the Poplar-Nanowin Rivers traditional lands in our Heart of the Boreal Forest BioGem.

Your urgent action is needed to ensure that Manitoba makes good on its repeated promises. Mounting proposals for clearcut logging, roadbuilding and industrial hydropower development loom over this irreplaceable habitat for threatened woodland caribou, moose and millions of songbirds.

Please go to http://www.savebiogems.org/boreal/takeaction and urge Manitoba's premier to grant permanent protection to these First Nation lands.

For thousands of years, the Poplar River First Nation has relied on the trees, plants and wildlife of this expanse of rugged granite cliffs, dense evergreen woods and tranquil marshlands for food, medicine and the survival of its beliefs and traditions. In 2004, the Canadian government recognized the outstanding cultural and natural values of this wildland by including it as part of a potential U.N. World Heritage Site.

Under pressure from BioGems Defenders like you, the Manitoba government renewed interim protection of the Poplar-Nanowin Rivers Park Reserve to allow for the completion of a land management plan. Yet more than a year has passed now since the plan was finalized -- and the Manitoba government has failed to legislate permanent protection.

Please go to http://www.savebiogems.org/boreal/takeaction and tell Manitoba's premier to take this long overdue next step toward creating a World Heritage Site in this region.

Thank you for all of your efforts to protect the wildest reaches of Canada's vast boreal forest.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
President Natural Resources Defense Council

Your "View" Can Protect the Boreal Forest

On Feb 12, 2007 four activists locked themselves together with chains inside Kimberly-Clark’s Canadian headquarters in Toronto. They announced that they would stay put until Kimberly-Clark’s Vice President of Environment, Ken Strassner, agreed to meet with Greenpeace.

As the four entered the office and locked down, others broadcast chainsaw noises and dumped woodchips in the corridors to highlight the company’s ongoing destruction of North America’s magnificent Boreal Forest and to further disrupt operations in the office. The activists were removed by police a few hours after they entered the building, charged with mischief and released.

Thanks to the thousands of you who took action that day by contacting Kimberly-Clark and asking them to stop destroying the Boreal Forest for disposable products like Kleenex.

To see photos and news coverage about the action, visit kleercut.net!
http://kleercut.net/en/kc-lockdown

On another note it has come to our attention from one of our Kleercut activists that talk show host Rosie O’Donnell has been promoting Kimberly-Clark Products on her show The View. It is appalling that a TV show as popular as The View would promote to its viewers products manufactured by Kimberly-Clark, a company that destroys ancient forests to make disposable tissue products.

Take action now! Click on this http://abc.go.com/daytime/theview/solicitations.html to tell ABC and The View that it is unacceptable to encourage the use of Kimberly-Clark products.

Remind The View that:

* In North America, most of Kimberly-Clark’s consumer products (sold in stores) contain no recycled fiber whatsoever.
* This company has the capacity to make a much higher percentage of its products from post-consumer recycled fiber
* Instead, Kimberly-Clark chooses to use virgin fiber from old growth forests such as North America’s Boreal to produce its tissue paper products.

Copy your comments to us! Please also take the time to copy your comments to us at info@kleercut.net - that way if The View ignores your feedback, we can remind them what the public thinks of their work with Kimberly-Clark.

Thanks, Ginger Cassady

World Bank Encouraging Deforestation

The World Bank has released a report encouraging the Indonesian government to create vast timber plantations that would damage local ecosystems and livelihood, in order to encourage economic growth.

Greenpeace locks down Kimberly-Clark’s Canadian HQ

As you read this, I’m locked down inside Kimberly-Clark’s Canadian headquarters in Toronto, along with three other dedicated Greenpeace activists. We got here at nine this morning, and will be here until K-C’s Vice President of Environment, Ken Strassner, agrees to meet with us.

To see photos and videos of the action, click here:
http://kleercut.net/en/image/tid/77

To hear audio updates from me and the other activists throughout the day, click here:
http://www.kleercut.net/en/KC_HQ_audio

As the four of us entered the office and locked ourselves down, others broadcast chainsaw noises and spread woodchips in the corridors to highlight the company’s ongoing destruction of Canada’s Boreal Forest and to further disrupt operations in the office (don’t worry, unlike the wood K-C uses, all the wood chips we used were reclaimed waste from city tree trimming operations!). Others are outside the building holding a banner that reads “Kleenex destroys ancient forests.”

Kimberly-Clark executives want to ignore us, and they want to ignore the immense problems caused by forest destruction. They want to continue on with business as usual, making throw-away products out of ancient forests while global warming accelerates and species disappear.

But we’re not going to let that happen. Our campaign won’t end until Kimberly-Clark agrees to stop sourcing from endangered forests and start making its products out of fibre that’s recycled or sourced from truly sustainable logging operations.

Help us make that happen. Take action now:
http://kleercut.net/en/call

It’s going to be a long, hard day locked down in this office. But knowing you’re all behind us will keep us going right until the end, fighting to protect what’s left of the magnificent Boreal forest.

Christy Ferguson
