Global fishing trends have put sharks at risk

November 09 2006 at 02:03AM

Beijing - Much of the world's shark population could be wiped out in 10 years if current fishing trends continue, a news report quoted environmentalists as saying on Wednesday.

One third of the more than 400 shark species are threatened with extinction or are close to being threatened, Sarah Fowler of the World Conservation Union said, according to the Xinhua news agency.

"Fisheries can remove 50 to 90 percent of an entire shark stock in only 10 years," Fowler was quoted as telling a shark conservation conference in Beijing.

Fowler's comments could not be immediately verified.

She and other experts at the conference said governments and non-governmental organisations had to work together to educate the public and fishermen about the dangers to sharks from overfishing.

The conference was co-sponsored by the San Francisco-based conservation group WildAid, the organisation which got basketball star Yao Ming in August to pledge to give up eating shark's fin soup, a Chinese delicacy, as part of a campaign to promote wildlife protection in his homeland.

WildAid says China is the world's biggest importer of shark's fins, which conservationists say are cut from sharks that are thrown back into the ocean to die. WildAid put the worldwide trade in shark's fins at 10 000 tons a year.

Fowler estimated that 38-million to 70-million sharks are killed each year for their fins.

"It is difficult to change people's dining habits, but we can educate and engage the public to achieve sustainable development of the sharks and people's dining culture," Li Yanliang, deputy general director of the Aquatic Wild Fauna and Flora Administrative Office under the Ministry of Agriculture, was quoted as saying. - Sapa-AP

A message from NANCY

Original Message

Please folks, I can't think of anyone who's not rattled and disgusted by this horrible and immense dog slaughter in China, we desperately need your signatures. Won't you please sign, for them, for all the thousands that have already been murdered, for all the oppressed people suffering terribly from the unecessary deaths of their beloved best friends? Greg Baker, AP A dog searches for two women who abandoned it Thursday in Beijing. The pet ran after them as they rode away on bicycles and threw rocks.

The REAL truth behind animal testing and its negative impact on human health

Urge Congress to Stop Federal Agencies from Testing on Animals

Governmental agencies kill millions of animals a year in product and substance safety tests even though more practical humane alternatives are already available and in use for these procedures. Please "Take Action" to ask your members of Congress to introduce legislation requiring governmental agencies to replace animal tests with humane non-animal methods that are more reliable and cost-effective.

Take Action!

The innocent victims of the fur trade are treated like mere lifeless commodities

One Week Left to Plan for Fur Free Friday

Join IDA in Speaking Out for Animals on November 24th

This November 24th, in the peaceful spirit of the holiday season, thousands of activists around the U.S. will join together for a non-violent demonstration against the cruel fur industry. Fur Free Friday 2006 will officially mark the twentieth anniversary of this event that takes place every year on the day after Thanksgiving. Targeting stores that sell fur, animal rights activists gather to inform the public about the blood, suffering and death that goes into every fur garment.

IDA and local organizers are coordinating 17 Fur Free Friday activities in 13 states (as well as one in France), offering a comprehensive listing of events to participate in. We strongly urge you to use your voice to help animals this holiday season by taking part in this national day of action.

If you've never participated in a Fur Free Friday activity before, now's your chance! Speaking up on behalf of animals is not as hard as it seems. If you're nervous or hesitant, just remember that over 40 million animals a year are counting on your help. These innocent victims of the fur trade -- mink, fox, raccoon and other wild species -- are treated like mere lifeless commodities, raw materials to be exploited for profit. Each individual who raises her voice in these animals' defense can help stop the senseless slaughter.

Help Save the Bay of Fundy Whales

Thirty to fifty of the world’s remaining North Atlantic right whales are in mortal danger. Lobster season has begun in the Bay of Fundy, and the whales which have usually left the area by this time of year are in grave danger of becoming ensnared in fishing gear and dying.

With only about 350 North Atlantic right whales left on the planet, even the loss of one of these gentle giants is too many.

Fill out the form below to send a message to Canadian Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn urging him to delay opening the fishing grounds until the right whales have left the area.

Walfang in Antarktis: Absatzschwierigkeiten für Walfleisch in Japan

14.11.06

Bird death disaster could spread

James Randerson Wednesday

The Guardian

The "most significant conservation disaster ever" may be about to repeat itself around the world, according to research by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Conservationists, already dismayed by the death of millions of vultures in India, Nepal and Pakistan, caused by the birds consuming a cattle drug, have found other bird species are also susceptible.

The anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac is toxic to three species of Asian vulture - the oriental white-backed, long-billed and slender-billed. They die from kidney failure if they eat the carcasses of cattle treated with it. Conservationists estimate that 10-14 million birds have died; populations are still declining at 30% to 50% a year. "It's probably the most significant conservation disaster ever in terms of the number of birds lost," said Jemima Parry-Jones at the US National Aviary in Pittsburgh.

Dr Parry-Jones and the RSPB research team set out to discover whether diclofenac and related drugs are toxic to other birds. They asked zoo vets around the world for reports of unintentional bird deaths after treatment with the drugs. Of the 79 scavenging birds they received information on, the drugs were deadly for 30%, including the African white-backed vulture, saw-whet owl from North America, harris hawk, spoonbill, Eurasian gryphon vulture and African maribu stork. The researchers reported their results in the journal Biology Letters.

The manufacture and import of diclofenac was banned in India in August, although it is not illegal to sell off stockpiles. It is banned in the US and Europe, but is still used in parts of Africa and South America.
