Marjah: 'This is not Fallujah'

So says McChrystal as the US surge goes full steam ahead in Marjah - a new "gentler" war.

By Eric Walberg

Marjah also represents the US project of replacing the UN with NATO as the world's peacekeeper. The coalition of almost 60 nations is pursuing an illegal war launched by the US , with the UN -- the only legitimate forum for world peacekeeping -- now in tow solely as window dressing.

Fiction of Marjah as City Was US Information War

Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: "For weeks, the US public followed the biggest offensive of the Afghanistan War against what it was told was a 'city of 80,000 people' as well as the logistical hub of the Taliban in that part of Helmand. That idea was a central element in the overall impression built up in February that Marjah was a major strategic objective, more important than other district centers in Helmand."

Gates Calls European Mood a Danger to Peace

By BRIAN KNOWLTON

Mr. Gates's blunt comments came just three days after the coalition government of the Netherlands collapsed in a dispute over keeping Dutch troops in Afghanistan. It now appears almost certain that most of the 2,000 Dutch troops there will be withdrawn this year. And polls show that the Afghanistan war has grown increasingly unpopular in nearly every European country.

Learning from history: Can the US win the Afghan war?

AntiWar.Com
by Ivan Eland

02/24/10

The primary reason that counterinsurgency warfare has not been very successful over time is that although counterinsurgents are usually much stronger than insurgents, they are also often foreign occupiers. This is one huge strike against them. People naturally get really annoyed when foreigners invade their country, as our own experience with British forces in the American Revolution attests. Even if the foreign troops are fairly benevolent — building schools, roads, and health clinics and handing out candy to children — they are still foreigners who are killing civilians by accident and arrogantly telling locals what to do at gunpoint, thus creating a nationalist backlash...

Bloody summer ahead in Afghanistan

Nolan Chart
by Jake Towne

02/10/10

The frigid winters in mountainous Afghanistan usually pass by with few combat deaths due to less mobility and less activity in the weather. Each summer, the casualty rate has spiked. However, this January was an exception with over the deaths of 30 American soldiers and 9 more to date in February. These totals, along with the arrival of close to 40,000 more NATO and US troops, suggest a bloody summer is ahead in Afghanistan. Last year was a record-setting year for soldier deaths at 317 and the totals so far are about twice as high as the 2009 winter...

The US can no longer afford its empire

Independent Institute

02/03/10

President Obama has presented Congress with a spending request of $3.8 trillion for the next fiscal year in 2011, but with a third of it not paid for with taxes, thus resulting in a $1.3 trillion deficit (a whopping 8.3 percent of GDP). The small piece of good news is that this deficit is smaller as a portion of the nation’s economic output than this year’s gargantuan 10.6 percent for FY 2010 (that $1.6 trillion deficit is a post-World War II record). Budget deficits of this magnitude have occurred before, but only during cataclysmic wars — the Civil War and World Wars I and II. Contrary to the rhetoric of congressional Republicans, who are stridently criticizing Obama for his excessive spending, these budget deficits are largely the result of George W. Bush’s new entitlement program (Medicare prescription drug coverage), the usual Republican fake tax cuts (tax cuts without concomitant reductions in government spending), bank and insurance bailouts, and the conduct of two disastrous U.S. occupations of foreign countries. Of course, Obama is far from blameless...
