The nation’s ongoing economic woes should make for what kindergarten teachers refer to as a ‘teachable moment,’ as we must try to figure out the reasons that home prices are falling, jobs are evaporating, government budgets are awash in red ink and as scores of blue-chip companies and retailers go out of business. Even those citizens with stable incomes and secure nest eggs ought to at least have some intellectual curiosity about the hovering storm. Yet, unfortunately, one finds virtually no serious debate about economics. Everyone seems to agree on a handful of platitudes and cliches, and the nation’s political leaders — the folks who promise to navigate the ship of state around the protruding iceberg — seem most committed to advancing a storyline that ranges from the childishly absurd to the absurdly dishonest...
