U.S. Night Raid In Afghanistan Elicits Outrage

By Laura King

The father's eyes reddened with tears as he hefted an English textbook that had belonged to his ninth-grade son, Habibuddin. The boy, along with eight other people, was shot dead this month when American special-operations forces swooped down on the family's remote mud-brick compound in the dead of night.

Grayson's Smart Calculus Makes War Cost Real for Taxpayers

"What George Orwell wrote about in 1984 has come true. What Eisenhower warned us about concerning the 'military-industrial complex' has come true," the congressman argues. "War is a permanent feature of our societal landscape, so much so that no one notices it anymore."

Line item veto

Fox Business News

President Obama wants Congress to give him the line-item veto — that is, the power to veto specific parts of Congressional bills, rather than the whole thing. That way, supposedly, the president can just cut out the waste. … On its face, it seems like a good idea. It may cut down on useless pork like bridges to nowhere. But the suggestion that it will help control spending is laughable. … It would be nice to eliminate pork, but it’s chump change compared to the big picture. Even now, Congress and the president are pushing for $200 Billion in new spending...

Does malinvestment matter?

Foundation for Economic Education
by William L. Anderson

05/26/10

Two years into the Obama administration we have seen an unprecedented rise in government spending and unprecedented federal budget deficits, all in the name of ’stimulating’ the economy. Nor is Barack Obama the only president to engage in economic ’stimulus;’ his predecessor George W. Bush also spent recklessly for the same reason. Yet with literally trillions of dollars spent, the rate of unemployment hovers around 10 percent, many banks remain in a precarious state, and a meaningful economic recovery is as elusive as ever...

Number one in war

CounterPunch

05/24/10

Our nation does not respect our soldiers by engaging in permanent war. War is grinding up our children. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have cost over 5000 US lives and tens of thousands more lives of people in those countries. Over 20% of those in our military who served in these two wars, 320,000 people, have war-related traumatic brain injuries. Suicide rates are up by 26 percent among 18 to 29 year old male veterans in the latest Veterans Administration study. Mental health hospitalizations are now the leading cause of hospital admissions for the military, higher than injuries. On any given night, over 100,000 veterans are homeless and living on our nation’s streets...

The top U.S. commander in the Middle East has ordered a broad expansion of clandestine military activity in an effort to disrupt militant groups or counter threats in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and other countries in the region, according to defense officials and military documents. The secret directive, signed in September by Gen. I believe that an united America, operating according to her Constitution and uncompromisingly asserting her national sovereignty under the Declaration of Independence, could successfully fend off the New World Order—although, perhaps, it might be a long-drawn-out and close-run thing. War on Korean Peninsula: High Tension Prompts Scenarios

Hillary Clinton: The mouth that roars

Liberty & Power
by CJ Maloney

05/22/10

As if America’s military wasn’t battered enough, it seems US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is angling to involve it in yet another conflict, this one on the Korean Peninsula. Considering that the American military has already lost a war on that very same piece of ground (and the fact that her chosen adversary, North Korea, most likely is nuclear armed) you’d imagine she’d be a bit more reluctant to throw our hat (and soldiers) into the ring. That, though, would require a sense of restraint and diplomacy, something Mrs. Clinton has never been known for...
