Trilateral Commission member Mikhail Slobodovsici, a chief adviser to the Russian leadership, unwittingly provided a revealing insight into the plans of the global elite during the group’s recent meeting in Dublin Ireland, when he mistakenly told a We Are Change Ireland activist he thought was a fellow TC member that the globalists are planning a war with Iran.

Guns of August in the Middle East?

Cato Institute
by Stanley Kober

05/12/10

The 20th century was a century of war. In August 1914, the peace of Europe was shattered. The United States, which had remained apart from major foreign wars for a century, was drawn in. Tragically, the United States has been at war many times since then: World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. It is not something Americans a century ago would have expected when they thought World War I would be the ‘war to end all wars.’ The 21st century, unfortunately, does not look any better. Having inherited two wars, President Obama is trying to extricate America from one war in Iraq to concentrate on another in Afghanistan. But a third war is looming: Iran...

An alarming sign

Center for a Stateless Society

I cringe when I hear the words ‘thank you for your service.’ I’m sure that many people in military uniform joined out of a sincere, albeit misguided, belief that that the wars they were fighting were in some sense to defend American lives and freedom. But it’s utterly nonsensical. Every time I hear someone say the troops in Iraq are ‘fighting for your right’ to do this or that, or ‘fighting for our freedom,’ I have to restrain myself from going ballistic. Gary Trudeau even (even?) got into the act. In a recent Doonesbury strip, the wounded Iraq vet kid with the stutter told one of the open-carry people at Starbucks ‘I spent two years behind an M-60 defending your right to be a moron about guns.’ No kidding? How exactly would those guys’ rights to pack heat at Starbucks have been threatened if Bush hadn’t invaded Iraq?

The endless occupation: Obama scraps Iraq withdrawal plan

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

05/14/10

Keeping his campaign promises has not been Barack Obama’s strong point, as those who hoped the closing of Guantanamo would end a shameful chapter in American history have learnt to their sorrow: and surely those who hoped ‘change’ meant a new era in American foreign policy have reason to be disappointed. As usual, on most issues Obama gave himself a lot of wiggle room, so that if a strategic shift were required he could dance around the contradiction with ease, but on one question he painted himself into a corner: ‘Let me say this as plainly as I can: by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end.’ He said that, not only during the campaign, but in a speech at Camp Lejeune last year. However, it looks like his administration is preparing to backtrack …

Obama scraps Iraq withdrawal plan

CounterPunch

So, we elected a president who promised a withdrawal from Iraq that he, or the generals who tell him what to do, is now further delaying. And, of course, the timetable he’s now delaying was already a far cry from what he had promised as a candidate. What are we to think? That may be sad news, but what could we have done differently? Surely it would have been worse to elect a president who did not promise to withdraw, right?

I would guess that Thomas Barnett has never bothered to examine the history of government programs — and the sad record of failure after failure after failure. It isn’t just the War on Drugs or the War on Poverty or the War on Illiteracy that has failed to fulfill its promises. There hasn’t been a single American war in this century or the last in which the U.S. government actually achieved the results that were promised when it went to war... Afghan war costs now outpace Iraq’s

USA Today

The monthly cost of the war in Afghanistan, driven by troop increases and fighting on difficult terrain, has topped Iraq costs for the first time since 2003 and shows no sign of letting up. As recently as fiscal year 2008, Iraq was three times as expensive; in 2009, it was twice as costly...

To smooth over the stormy relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President Barack Obama is throwing out the red carpet in Washington, D.C., for Karzai and his entourage. Vice President Joe Biden, who in the past has erupted in open hostility toward Karzai, is holding a ‘kiss-and-make-up’ dinner for the Afghan leader. All of this hoopla is the belated recognition by the Obama administration that Karzai is weak and corrupt but is the only game in town in Afghanistan. Of course, if the Vietnam War is any indication, being chained to a local leader with no legitimacy at home is usually the death knell of the entire war effort...

Oil spill: Who is liable?

The ‘polluter pays’ principle is ethical, efficient, and sustainable. When there is an oil spill such as the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the involved oil companies are morally responsible to compensate society for the damage. But such is not legally required today. In 1990 the U.S. federal government enacted the Oil Pollution Act that set a $75 million liability cap for financial damage and a $500 million cap for environmental damage. The current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, reportedly caused by a methane gas explosion, will impose damages of over $10 billion...
