For years, perhaps decades to come, Americans will be whittling away at the mountain of debt the Obama administration has built, in part to apply Maynard Keynes’s nostrums to the sagging economy, in greater part permanently to expand the size and role of government. On the day before Christmas, immediately after its dawn vote to pass the health care bill, when few were watching, the Senate joined the House in raising the debt ceiling so that the administration could borrow enough money — $290 billion — to keep the government running, but only for a few months, so great is the amount of red ink pouring onto the federal books. Congress is also preparing a second stimulus bill — it will have a different name — and instead of using the money flowing in from the banks to repay the government’s bail-outs to reduce the deficit, the president and Congress are converting it to a slush fund to be spent on a variety of new programs. Throw in the fact that no one believes the health care bill will not add to the deficit, and Americans will remember 2009 as the year they loaded huge burdens on their children and grandchildren...

Their lobbying contributed to an overwhelming House of Representatives vote (412-12) in support of the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act, which seeks to cut off Tehran’s importation of refined petroleum products, amounting to 40% of its energy needs, and bring the country’s economy to its knees. The supporters of the House resolution believe that pressuring Iran in that fashion will somehow convince its government to alter its nuclear energy policy.

To put it kindly, the stimulus package that President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rushed through Congress at the beginning of his presidency has been a flop. It is not just that the $789 billion package has not had the effect the White House promised it would; it’s that it may actually have been counterproductive, actually lengthening the recession by effectively taking money out of the private economy, where it could have been used to create jobs and for investment purposes. Instead it has been parceled out by the government, which has been unable to track where it has gone or what impact it has really had on job creation. And that has led to any number of fallacious statements by senior administration officials about jobs ‘created or saved’...

Zu den Plänen der schwarz-gelben Regierungskoalition, die Sozialabgaben zu erhöhen, erklärt der Bundesgeschäftsführer der Partei DIE LINKE, Dietmar Bartsch:

Für das, was Finanzminister Schäuble und die FDP-getriebene Bundesregierung vorhaben, gibt es nur ein Wort: Wahlbetrug. Offen und ohne jede Scham über eine Erhöhung von Sozialabgaben zu reden, Streichlisten für soziale Sicherungssysteme zu entwerfen und Steuererhöhungen nicht auszuschließen – davon war vor dem Wahltag in keinem Programm zu lesen. Konzerne, Groß-Erben und Banken bekommen Milliardengeschenke. Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmer zahlen die Zeche weitgehend allein. DIE LINKE war gegen die damalige Senkung des Arbeitslosenbeitrages, um notwendige arbeitsmarktpolitische Maßnahmen anzuschieben. Ihn nun wieder erhöhen zu wollen, um die Steuergeschenke zu finanzieren und Haushaltslöcher zu stopfen ist der Gipfel der Unverfrorenheit. Wer mit Ankündigung die Axt an die sozialen Sicherungssysteme legt, spielt mit dem sozialen Frieden im Land. Ich fordere von der Regierung zwei Dinge: Erstens muss die Unsicherheit ein Ende haben, Schäuble muss seine Giftliste vor der NRW-Wahl öffentlich machen. Zweitens dürfen die Kosten der Krise nicht auf die Allgemeinheit abgewälzt werden. Deshalb sind eine Millionärssteuer, eine Erhöhung des Spitzensteuersatzes, vernünftige Erbschaftssteuer und eine Börsenumsatzsteuer dringend geboten. Nicht der Erhalt von Banken, sondern der Erhalt von Arbeitsplätzen mit vernünftigen Löhnen ist wichtig.

Regierung in Froststarre

Zur Situation auf dem Arbeitsmarkt im Monat Dezember erklärt der Bundesgeschäftsführer der Partei DIE LINKE, Dietmar Bartsch:

Die Arbeitslosigkeit ist im Dezember erheblich angestiegen. Laut offizieller Statistik erlebten 3,276 Millionen Menschen den Jahreswechsel in Arbeitslosigkeit. Ohne statistische Taschenspielertricks sind es sogar 4,55 Millionen Arbeitslose. Für sie und ihre Familien, aber auch für viele andere, beginnt ein Jahr voller Ungewissheit und Unsicherheit, denn eine Besserung am Arbeitsmarkt ist nicht in Sicht. Die Zahlen belegen, dass die Krise lange nicht vorbei ist, sie schlägt jetzt auf den Arbeitsmarkt durch. Dringendes Handeln der Regierung ist geboten. Schwarz-Gelb ist völlig zerstritten, zerstrittener als es die Große Koalition selbst im Wahlkampf war. Die Verantwortlichen, allen voran Frau von der Leyen, verharren in arbeitsmarktpolitischer Froststarre. Mehr als die Verlängerung des Kurzarbeitergeldes haben sie nicht hinbekommen. Vernünftige Maßnahmen für den Arbeitsmarkt fehlen gänzlich. Der Osten ist offensichtlich abgeschrieben, an der nahezu doppelt so hohen Arbeitslosigkeit stört sich in der Regierung niemand. Stattdessen wird die Erhöhung des Arbeitslosenbeitrags debattiert: Nicht, um Arbeitslosen in bezahlte Beschäftigung zu helfen, sondern um Haushaltslöcher zu stopfen. Logisches Handeln sieht anders aus: Vernünftige Arbeitsmarktpolitik brächte Menschen schneller in sozialversicherungspflichtige Arbeit, erhöht so dass Steueraufkommen. DIE LINKE fordert darüber hinaus einen gesetzlichen, flächendeckenden Mindestlohn von 10 Euro, die Abschaffung des Renteneintrittsalters erst ab 67 und das Verbot von Massenentlassungen bei wirtschaftlich gesunden Unternehmen. Statt Untätigkeit ist sofortiges Handeln gefordert. Gute Arbeit zu guten Löhnen hilft den Menschen und auch dem Steuersäckel von Bund, Ländern und Gemeinden.
