Bush's Key Men Face Grilling on Torture and Death Squads

Paul Harris, The Guardian UK: "America is bracing itself for a series of investigations that could see top officials from the administration of President George W. Bush hauled in front of Congress, grilled by a special prosecutor and possibly facing criminal charges. Several investigations will now cast a spotlight on Bush-era torture policy and a secret CIA assassination program, examining the role played by big names such as the former Vice President Dick Cheney and the former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld."

Zum Tod zweier afghanischen Zivilisten durch Schüsse von Bundeswehrsoldaten

20. Juli 2009

The placebo president

CounterPunch

by Missie Beattie

07/19/09

Barack Obama entered DC, riding a hope train. Spirits soared all over the globe. Supporters were high with the drug of anticipation, an injection to heal a sick country. Almost immediately after taking the oath, Obama began to reject his promises. Clearly, the Obama cure is just a placebo...

Many predict US financial collapse in September

Let us contemplate the day in the near future when the consequences of financial chicanery finally outpace the ability of the governments, central banks and big media to cover up and obfuscate the truth. Government monopolies really “stink!”

What can failures teach us?

Boston Globe
by Andrew Lippman

07/19/09

Our institutions are cracking at the edges. Each day, we hear about another failure that causes us to question the role and efficacy of government, industry, and social structures. But all too often the debate focuses on the specific problems of a particular sector … On closer examination, we can identify a consistent set of causes that apply across the board. The first systemic problem is simply a matter of scale. Too many organizations have grown without limit … and no correction has been made to accommodate their size. This is a common problem in engineering: We design things with some implicit size in mind, and then are expected to extend that design bit by bit until the parameters are so out of whack that the whole enterprise collapses...

Billions in government cash behind Goldman’s “profits”

AlterNet
by Matt Taibbi

07/17/09

So what’s wrong with Goldman posting $3.44 billion in second-quarter profits, what’s wrong with the company so far earmarking $11.4 billion in compensation for its employees? What’s wrong is that this is not free-market earnings but an almost pure state subsidy. Last year, when Hank Paulson told us all that the planet would explode if we didn’t fork over a gazillion dollars to Wall Street immediately, the entire rationale not only for TARP but for the whole galaxy of lesser-known state crutches and safety nets quietly ushered in later on was that Wall Street, once rescued, would pump money back into the economy, create jobs, and initiate a widespread recovery. This, we were told, was the reason we needed to pilfer massive amounts of middle-class tax revenue and hand it over to the same guys who had just blown up the financial world. We’d save their asses, they’d save ours. That was the deal. It turned out not to happen that way...

Goldman and JPMorgan - The Two Winners When the Rest of America Is Losing

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Besides Goldman Sachs, the Street's other surviving behemoth is JPMorgan. Today it posted second-quarter earnings up a stunning 36 percent from the first quarter, to $2.7 billion. The resurgence of JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs gives both banks more financial clout than any other players on the Street - allowing both firms to lure talent from everywhere else on the Street with multi-million pay packages, giving both firms enough economic power to charge clients whopping fees, and bestowing on both firms even more political heft in Washington."

RFID chips: Saving you or enslaving you?

Dallas Libertarian Examiner
by Garry Reed

07/19/09

American government controlcrats are absolutely in love with RFID chips. They want to embed radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags in everything, passports, ‘enhanced’ driver’s licenses (ELD), PASS cards required for travel to nearby countries, other types of identity documents and credentials, and in the ears of all farm animals (but that latter is an article for another day). The justification for all of this emanates from Homeland Security. They just want to speed up border crossings, foil counterfeiters and identity thieves, and keep terrorists from sneaking into the country. But that’s just the ‘for your own good’ news. One major drawback is that GPS-equipped ’spy chips’ make everyone trackable without their knowledge...

Back to Iraq?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

07/20/09

If President Obama is serious about getting out of Iraq, and if he truly respects Iraqi sovereignty – if his ascension to the presidency is really all about changing our imperial foreign policy — then Gen. Bolger should be called on the carpet and summarily canned. It hasn’t happened, and it won’t happen, for the simple reason that Iraqi sovereignty is a myth as long as the U.S. occupation force remains. The fact that a single U.S. commander can unilaterally decide to break the SOFA and essentially tell the Iraqis to go screw themselves indicates that the American Raj is not ready to withdraw just yet. Was withdrawal from Iraq just another campaign promise, made to be broken – like Obama’s pledges on government secrecy and other civil liberties issues? The president’s record, so far, does not bode well for an answer in the negative...

TARP Watchdog Says Treasury Lacking Bank Data

Silla Brush, The Hill: "The top watchdog over the financial bailout package said the Treasury Department is rejecting 'common sense' by not requiring banks receiving billions of dollars in government money to say how they are using the money. Once World's Bread Basket, Iraq Now a Farming Basket Case

Mike Tharp, McClatchy Newspapers: "Once the cradle of agriculture for civilization, the Land Between Two Rivers - the Tigris and Euphrates - has become a basket case for its farmers. US Income Inequality Continues to Grow

By Don Monkerud

Wages for most Americans didn't improve from 1979 to 1998, and the median male wage in 2000 was below the 1979 level, despite productivity increases of 44.5 percent. Between 2002 and 2004, inflation-adjusted median household income declined $1,669 a year. To make up for lost income, credit card debt soared 315 percent between 1989 and 2006, representing 138 percent of disposable income in 2007.
